The House GOP has nothing to show for its government shutdown

    By Editorial Board Washington Post

But throwing a lifeline is pointless until the victim realizes he may be drowning. It’s not clear the Republicans have reached that point. The danger is they will take the country down with them.

The title of the Washington Post editorial is pitch perfect. All of this unnecessary hardship for the country for what. Speaker Boehner already has the lifeline. The 217 votes are there for a clean CR. He should schedule a vote immediately and allow his caucus to vote their conscience.

Not only do we have the lazy both sides do it nonsense. But now there is the President Obama and the Democrats in the end must help Speaker Boehner save face from the mess that HIS LACK OF LEADERSHIP created. Enough is enough. The Republican Party is making a mockery of our democracy. Sabotage, hostage taking and extortion are not governing strategies. It time for the Republican Party to stop acting like bullies and criminals. Speaker Boehner needs to stop the obfuscating and lying and just simply do his job. He is not the Speaker of the Republicans he is the Speaker of the House. What is good for the country should be more important than any threats to his speakership.

      • October 8, 2013 at 9:03 am

Yes, LH, has anyone in any venue–tv, newspaper, radio, news conference, public or private speech–EVER said that the Republicans ought to throw the president a lifeline? They feel justified in doing every unspeakably ugly thing to thwart a twice democratically elected president and then they’re the victims. Well, cry me a river.

          • October 8, 2013 at 9:13 am

Jovie, I don’t think your mom ever meant the puppy to “replace” your best friend. She wanted you to have something to take care of and eventually love–a little thing who desperately needs your attention. Grief can truly occupy your being and it’s something you need to live through til the grip eases a little and you can lift up your head again. When my sister’s husband died after 48 years of marriage, I thought nothing on earth would console her. She wouldn’t eat, she lost all reason to get up in the morning. She tried to keep herself occupied with work, but then she finally had to retire and the loneliness threatened to overwhelm her. I truly feared for her life. She was wasting away. Now that same sister is preparing to remarry. Slowly she came out of the grief and embraced life and, in doing so, met someone who could make her laugh again. It will take time. It’s a rough road. But you WILL get there. Someday you’ll look at your little puppy and say, thanks, buddy, for being there for me.

Through their attack on the President and the American people, the GOP has unwittingly revealed — especially to those who had not already figured it out — who is really calling the shots for the GOP legislators. Imagine how much more damage these terrorists could have inflicted had the Koch’s investments (and others) had yielded the payoffs they desired in the last Presidential election.

It makes me more thankful that America was awake enough to re-elect President Obama in 2012.

The GOP Debt Ceiling Strategy: Lies, Grabassery and Default Denialism
    By Bob Cesca

As Matt Yglesias observed yesterday, if this is so commonplace and if nothing will happen after the debt ceiling deadline passes, how can this possibly give the GOP any leverage? Another sign of an incoherent strategy, yet a strategy that could do serious harm — and that’s understating the impact. This is like the Three Stooges monkeying around with a nuclear warhead. What could possibly go wrong? In this case, just about everything.

And the debt ceiling issue is so completely mental that it’s easy to forget that we’re in the middle of a government shutdown precipitated by the same crowd.

Morning back…..and to everyone else. As you all know, I’ve been in VA for our granddaughter’s third birthday. Was always lurking, especially in the car, but not so easy to comment.

Read the long list of individuals and groups — people behind this (attempted) coup. Low and behold near the bottom of the list appears the name Joe Gregory, Gregory Management. My nephew is his (corporate) attorney!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He was the co-founder of King Phamaceuticals. WOW!

Today is my busy volunteer service day at our church. I’ll be lurking around as I can. Good day to all.

When the Treasury Runs Out of Cash

Some scholars have asserted that should members of Congress ignore their oath to defend the laws of the United States and default on the debt becomes unavoidable, the president should invoke the Constitution to override the debt limit. They point to Section 4 of the 14th Amendment and other sections of the Constitution that would permit such action.

President Obama has said repeatedly that the constitutional option is off the table. The Treasury says failure to make any payment when due constitutes default. And Republicans either think that they have the president over a barrel or that it is no big deal, depending on whom you ask.

What we know for certain is that we will be in uncharted waters. And given that United States Treasury securities are essentially the foundation upon which the entire world financial system rests, those are dangerous waters indeed. Only a fool would enter them if they could be avoided.

Bernie Sanders Terrifies the Koch Brothers By Outting Their Role In the Government Shutdown

    By: Jason Easley

The Koch Brothers are the real power behind the government shutdown.

The point that Sen. Sanders made can’t be expressed often enough. The real ideology and agenda behind the government shutdown belongs to the Koch brothers. The Koch boys hate Obamacare because they don’t want the working and middle class people to have the same access to healthcare that they do. They are opposed to anything that empowers working class individuals, because are seeking a new Gilded Age where the employer controls the lives of their employees.
At heart, the Koch brothers are cowards who hide behind Citizens United in order to anonymously advance their agenda.

Gooooooooood Morning TOD WArriors…..May the creator bless us all…and grant us the courage and wisdom and the tenacity needed to defeat the enemies of our country….

i have to commend ZiZi again for such an awesome analysis of the current political affairs in our country…many in the TOD Community have seen what what is right there to be seen…some in the MSM have begun to see as well…

one poignant part of ZiZi’s essaay spoke about the Fed Government’s ability to quell rebellions….

“What this means is that if there IS domestic rebellion that threatens the very security of this country, the only authorities who can directly act are State governors deploying National Guard, not Federal government”

both LBJ and Kennedy used the national guard to enforce Federal Law re: desegregation…so there must be powers that the Executive Branch has within it’s aresenal….

I am encouraged by PBOs stance and the DEMS who are standing strong with him…this is a fight that we have to win…….

Infuriating to hear the news media today reporting that ‘President Obama said he won’t even talk to the Repubs unless they take healthcare off the table!’——-as if this was some unreasonable demand, as if it’s all “Obama’s fault”——-or at least half his fault. Doing their best to take the heat off the crazies on the right. Not being clear or truthful with the public with this kind of misleading framing. Continuing to keep the uninformed uninformed.

When you share, would you tell us which specific media outlet & journalist say this stuff? Please. I like to target my tweets when I can, and I never watch MSM. I don’t like sending a general CRITICAL tweet to them all, because the one who didn’t make the statement is likely the one to respond. Thanks

Here folks, is why I do NOT LIKE Jon Stewart. Anyone who makes it their business to “destroy” Kathleen Sebellius about the ACA in light of the GOP’s burning desire to get rid of the law, is nothing more than a willing tool of the GOP and Professional Left. And no, despite Stewart’s efforts and the article’s take, an narcissistic, spiteful jerk like Stewart cannot “destroy” a fine public servant like Sebellius. Stewart can go F- himself.

These fuckers need to be gotten rid of. What I am really afraid of is that someone will get too close the the President and try and shoot or get rid of him. The rails look they are coming off, I know he is well aware of this and God keep him safe.

    • October 8, 2013 at 9:56 am

I think that we need to devise our own strategy to defeat these attacks on voting rights. we seem to be always putting out brush fires…

part of the problem i think is that there are many American Citizens who really do not understand the power of the vote…and that there are those who are not involved in or know about what goes on in our government..

this is why OFA is so important…in rousing and organizing folks around issues and concerns…

Good Morning TODer’s and Chips. ZiZi, I just finished your article and read the comments. It was astounding and I can’t understand how people can be so misdirected. But maybe not. They are a stealthy lot. I posted that on my FB page , because I have family that is really into the religion part of this all. And that is the other segment that is being ignored, the Fundamentalist in the group. There was a really great write up on that also. There is so much out there to read and take in, you wonder how anyone can get through the day and just survive this shit. (((((((hugs))))) to all the friends here, I couldn’t survive without you, The Peoples View and Smarty pants. She is writing again on tumblr but asked not to broadcast her site. She is really on topic again. Love you all. Better start my day. See you all later.

Lawrence O’Donnell about the GOP trying to shut down not the Government but the OBAMA PRESIDENCY.

  30. October 8, 2013 at 9:37 am

After reading Zizi’s post last night, I couldn’t sleep. I was alternately angry, frightened and frustrated because I couldn’t think of what to do. People all around us are living their lives, going about their business, not aware of the nightmare we’re facing. Most seniors have no idea that there is a sword of Democles over their heads. If the debt ceiling is breached and the Treasury can’t make SS payments, they will not survive. I’ve tried writing, calling, talking to everyone I know, harassing my congressman, given all I can to OFA, but I don’t get the feeling people are really listening. ‘m not sure how we can go about mobilizing American people power because this goes beyond one day and one vote. We need the OFA army in full battle gear again because the stakes are getting higher every day. If seniors could begin to grasp what’s a stake here, I think there would be a scream heard round the world. The Treasury could run out of cash to pay SS checks just in time for the holidays. How do we reach seniors on a massive scale. Get the AARP and other aging groups involved? May we should start flooding these groups with calls.
