Here’s the answer about the Dem whip count for a clean CR.

  2. October 5, 2013 at 12:53 pm

Here’s my favorite part of PBO’s interview with AP. Loved his response to the weasel who tried to exquate his rise to political superstardom to what the nitwits Rubio, Cruz & Rand Paul are doing.

Q: Some of these tea party senators are in their first term, and you were a first-term senator who came in and had a lot of public attention around you, you didn’t sort of take the traditional route, you weren’t a backbencher. I’m wondering if you feel like you set a precedent for people like Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul to come in, in their first term, and really take a high-profile role in the Senate?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, if you recall, when I came into the Senate, my attitude was I should just keep a pretty low profile in the Senate and just do the work.

Q: The media certainly didn’t let you do that.

THE PRESIDENT: The media may not have, but I didn’t go around courting the media, and I certainly didn’t go around trying to shut down the government. And so I recognize that in today’s media age, being controversial, taking controversial positions, rallying the most extreme parts of your base — whether it’s left or right — is a lot of times the fastest way to get attention or raise money, but it’s not good for government. It’s not good for the people we’re supposed to be serving.

And one thing I just have to remind members of Congress about is these are real folks that are being impacted. I’ve got staff here who may be expecting their first child, and right now they’re not sure about whether or not they’re going to be able to meet expenses. I’ve got young staff who, if they have a car accident, they may have a thousand dollar premium on their car insurance — or deductible on their car insurance, and if they don’t get a paycheck, they may be broke. They will not be able to pay the bills.

I’m getting letters every single day from farmers who have been waiting to buy some land and now they may not get a loan, and from small businesses. We give a billion dollars’ worth of small business loans every single month — those loans are not being processed.

So this is something that is concretely affecting real people. There is no reason government should be shut down. I think it’s very important for the public to understand that a bill passed the Senate — democratically controlled Senate — that set budget levels at the levels that Republicans preferred — not Democrats.

I mean, essentially what’s happened here is Democrats are saying they are prepared to pass a Republican budget for two months while negotiations continue. We just can’t have a whole bunch of other extraneous stuff in it, and the obsession with the Affordable Care Act, with Obamacare, has to stop; that that is not something that should be a price for keeping the government open.

Here is the Video part of it.

The AP idiot forgot that Abe Lincoln was a one term House member. Sen Obama didn’t engineer any tactics to tank our economy or the Gov’t for any bill. Just stupid idiotic questions.

Julie Pace is a master contortionist. How else could she ask such a twisted question.

Wow, just wow. So Julie Pace is saying PBO bears some responsibility for the government shutdown because Rafael Edward Cruz is just emulating what then Senator Barack Obama did when he was in congress. Ah, no not really. For my money, this bizarre linkage makes Julie Pace a master contortionist and a terrible reporter. It’s amazing that she was able to twist herself into a pretzel and do a couple of back flips to arrive at such an inane question. President Obama’s response, of course, was pitch perfect.

Just a creature of habit (short for lazy). Since windows 8 is a flop, I am seriously considering switching over to Mac airbook. (Which costs around 2,200 doubloons for the config I want. Hint, hint.)

            • October 5, 2013 at 1:59 pm

Would you please tell me what 2,200 doubloons is in US currency? I have my eye on the Mac Pro laptop for more storage and the Retina display because of my eye problems. I had the chance to shop in Boulder and compare. Loved it. The store was crazy though because the iPhone 5 had just been released and I couldn’t think with all the talking at once. My hearing isn’t great when there is cross talk. The only time I envy city dwellers is when I’m shopping for a large ticket item and would like to see and hold it instead of just ordering over Internet. Thanks AMK. I’ve hated windows since Vista.

My wishlist is a macbook air 13 inch with 512 GB SSD and 1.7 Ghz processor and 8 gig air with other connectors etc. That came to 2200 and change. I test drove it and liked it. If only the f…ers had a reasonable price tag, which has always been my objection to it.

Macbook pro with retina display is good for bad eyes. Since it is heavier (and costlier) I kicked it from the wish list.

๐Ÿ˜† It’s ridiculously gorgeous! What made me go for the Pro in the end was the fear that the Air was a bit on the fragile side, especially if you’re going to be taking it on your travels – read a horror story or two. Almost everyone I know who has a Pro adooooooores it, but I just find it flippin’ heavy for transporting, and not half as speedy as I thought it would be. But I’m hard to please, me.

Chips, is the only reasons you don’t like the Mac Pro the two you stated? I’m not a traveler and only the iPad can be connected to cellular. I loved my iPad until I got sloppy and used too much memory. Now I’m cleaning it up and it’s why your not seeing me post very often. It is now two years old. I’m getting a new one when they come out this fall. I don’t have a cell phone. Thanks.

Hiya Carol, I’m really not sure if it’s just an issue with my Pro, it most probably is, but it’s pretty sluggish even compared to my now deceased MacBook, takes programs a long-ish time to open, very glitchy, etc. Could be a compatibility problem with the OS, not sure. But, again, just about everyone I know who has a Pro LOVES it!

                    • October 5, 2013 at 2:39 pm

Thanks Chips. Hope you can work out the compatibility problems. Shouldn’t the Apple store you bought it from be able to help?

                    • October 5, 2013 at 2:45 pm

Carol, I bought it online and rang Apple about it overheating after a couple of months – it gets way hotter than it should! They gave me the go-ahead to bring it a local agent to check it out, just haven’t got around to it yet. Will do – soon-ish!

                • October 5, 2013 at 2:19 pm

Flash drives are state of the art storage devices. They weigh much less than a hard disk (and hence macbook air’s 1 ks weight and their usage in tablets) and much much faster. For your use, a 256 gig flash drive (aka SSD) is more than enough. If you want, you can back up your computer via an external HD of 1 TB capacity. You will need one anyway to transfer files from your old laptop to the new one. Old ‘puter > External HD > new ‘puter

“Straight news” my ass. That was the reason I hesitated getting too invested in the network. With whom they were hiring, I knew it would eventually be another MSM cesspool.

Actually, what set off my alarms was after the Manning verdict. They gave Ellsberg carte blanche to rip PBO apart.

    • 66 57andfemale
      October 5, 2013 at 1:16 pm

On the shutdown during AJAM’s ‘regular’ reporting: a clip of Cantor saying all they want to do is talk and PBO refuses.

The Democratic ‘opposing view” (AJAM’s exact wording): they show a clip of the presser where Dem’s say, “We want to keep the government open.”

Did that refute Cantor? Not at all. They have become CNN/msnbc.

They are still good on in depth stuff on environment, etc. They had a sane guest discussing American oil production – he wasn’t a loon on either fringe, and the interview and report was substantive.

But the political reporting reflects the CBS hacks they hired to run the network. Sigh.

From what I understand, the earliest that the discharge petition can be brought is Oct 14 – so we still have at least another week of shutdown to go through. But if that’s the only option going forward, I’m all for it and very thankful to these hard-working DEMs putting country ahead of politics.

      • October 5, 2013 at 1:39 pm

Thank you, hf. Yes, he’s an outstanding Rep. Not sure where the 14 Oct, that we’ve all seen reported, comes from.

The Discharge Petition was actually filed yesterday (on a bill that has languished since Mar 2013) and they have no reason, once it’s filed, to delay gathering signatures. That’s part of the reason I’m pressing for an answer given that Rep Miller stated yesterday it would only take a day. And, given that Leader Pelosi gathered 195 signatures on her letter – in less than a day – they should be able to get this done, quickly.

We’ll see. Please extend our gratitude to your fantastic Congressman whenever you get the opportunity to do so.

Hey Bob, I got this info from an article I read on HP. Now, I’m very open to the possibility that HP may not necessarily have the all the facts, but I believe I saw the same thing mentioned elsewhere (not sure where at this point). So I’m just linking with the specific excerpt and we will try to make sense of it.

// “Under the Democrats’ plan, the soonest they could force a vote on a clean government funding bill is Oct. 14. The first step of the process involves filing their resolution now, on Oct. 4, and having it referred to the House Rules Committee. Democrats then have to wait for seven days of inaction by the committee before they can do anything else. That brings them to Oct. 11.

Assuming the committee doesn’t take up their resolution, Democrats will file their discharge petition and start collecting signatures. Once they hit 218, if they do, they can make a motion on the House floor to “discharge” their resolution from the committee for immediate House consideration. The earliest that could happen is Oct. 14.

From there, the House would have to take an up-or-down vote on the resolution. Assuming it passes with the support of everyone who signed the discharge petition, and possibly some others, the resolution would head to the Senate, where it would sail to passage and head to President Barack Obama’s desk to become law, ending the shutdown.” //

          • October 5, 2013 at 2:12 pm

Thank you, hf. I had not seen it, primarily because I never click on huff’n puff. So, I was confused that Rep Van Hollen indicated he had filed not a ‘resolution’ but the ‘discharge petition’ and Rep Miller indicating it would only take a day to get the signatures. So, if we have to wait until 14 Oct let’s hope the pressure, from other directions, forces Boehner to bring the Senate CR to a vote sooner.

    • 87 Lovepolitics2008
      October 5, 2013 at 1:47 pm

Won’t happen I think before a few days at least. Republicans who want to sign the CR won’t go against Boehner. The only way they’ll vote with dems is if Boehner brings himself the vote to the floor.

Folks, there’s no escaping the reality that republicans will bring the country very near the precipice before we see any resolution of the crisis.

And prepare yourself for the media to put enormous pressure on the President this week. Lots of talk about how Reagan was able to negotiate with O’Neill. Without ever mentioning that Reagan was dealilng with RATIONAL democrats, not LUNATICS. These media guys are so simple-minded and so unable to go beyond the mere optics of a situation. No perspective. No real knowledge of history. Frustrating.

The local stations are doing a much better job talking about what’s actually happening and that’s where the viewers are. A lot of these cable news shows combined don’t come close to the audience many of the locals do. I agree they will try to pressure the President but I’m comfortable based on past performance that he as doesn’t care. They talk all they want among themselves. PBO is not listening.

Just wanted to say that I love Chris VanHollen. I’m always happy to see him on a talk show. He is always so well-spoken and on point. I’m jealous because I have to deal with some numbnut teabagger wannabe Repub. Barely a half step up from horrible Joe Walsh.

Hey teachers, thanks for all you do! I did not know today is the World Teachers’ Day.

To the many teachers (current and retired on TOD), we are extremely grateful for all you do daily

any chance teachers here can take today to ID themselves?

    I love teaching;

I intend to go back to teaching very soon once my non-profit socio-justice work is streamlined

My late dad was a popular prof. Even now his old students tell me how great he was.

To all teachers, without whom the whole world will be full of idjits.

Did not know today is World Teachers Day, gcl. Thank you. Hope you do go back to teaching. I know desertflower is also a teacher. I love what Dr. Jill Biden said: “Teaching is not what I do, teaching is what I am.” I think that describes me too. I retired, tried doing volunteer work and other stuff, then the head of my department asked if I would teach a couple of things, I dipped my toe back in, now I’m an adjunct professor where I once was full time, and I love it.
I always say I have the best, because I get to teach: I don’t have to attend committee meetings or faculty meetings. I love my eighteen year olds. I always teach freshman composition…a first semester freshman year course, and I love following them emotionally and intellectually as they grow and develop. I now know I will keep doing this until I am no longer able.
I’ve taught from kindergarten to college…..So…..welcome back to the field as soon as you can come. We need you!

Just lovely, Carolyn. It is because of teachers like you that humanity has hope.

Teaching and caring for others are the two aspects of my carrier that have not only been rewarding in the doing, but have significantly motivated me to take on the exceptionally difficult challenge to create new modalities for providing sustainable, equitable access to learning and care.

Foreign military raid al-Shabaab headquarters in Somalia, reports say
Speculation that assault was targeting militant leader Ahmed Godane, who claimed responsibility for Nairobi mall attack

Foreign military forces appear to have carried out a pre-dawn raid on a southern Somalian coastal town, apparently in pursuit of “a high-profile target” linked to the militant al-Shabaab group that was behind last month’s Kenyan mall shootings.

The pre-dawn raid โ€“ which initial but unconfirmed reports suggested may have involved US troops โ€“ took place in Barawe, in the lower Shabelle region 240km south of Mogadishu. It is the same town where US navy commandos killed a senior al-Qaida member four years ago.

The raid comes as Kenya’s military confirmed the names of four al-Shabaab fighters implicated in the Westgate attack. Major Emmanuel Chirchir said the men were Abu Baara al-Sudani, Omar Nabhan, Khattab al-Kene and Umayr โ€“ names that were first broadcast by a local Kenyan television station.

Okay. I have loved posting the link to candles for PBO. At times I enjoy reading the heartfelt best wishes for POTUS, FLOTUS and others in the First Family and in the administration. Lately I’ve noticed a trend that almost seems like the site/page is being trolled, with admonitions and fairly aggressive interpretations of tod/Obots denigrating our beloved First Lady. I am intuitively uncomfortable with this, a much as I love the candles. The perps also seem to have found a way to post their derision with more characters than normally allowed, like a hacker would. I think I will stop posting the link for a while. But I guarantee you all I will never stop the LightWork I do from wherever I am, in love and support of Presdient and Mrs. Obama.

MP, I am so sorry that is happening, those candles mean so much to me. Is there any way you can start a new group and we can find it?

I am giving it some thought mtm, but what would stop them from clicking on the new group, if they are the troll/lurker types who hover here unseen? I agree with you and meta, to bring darkness into a field of Light is a sad expression of human madness, but if they are driven to spread darkness, what will stop them, except Light!!! We are effective enough to keep PBO and FLOTUS surrounded and upheld with our Love and Light without using virtual candles, really, but it is sad some will go to any length of abuse to try and harm him. We will double our strength, which is purely spiritual, they will fade into oblivion. God Bless you!

OH, NO. MP, thank you so much for the heads up. I brought that link to OFA in the early days of the 2008 campaign. It sickens me that these idiots have infiltrated what is a very simple way to keep our POTUS in our thoughts and prayers.
