Yahoo: Michelle Obama: What Every Mother In This Country Deserves
Back when Barack and I were first starting out and building our life together, our finances were a constant source of stress. For years, we struggled to pay off our student loans and pay down our mortgage while keeping up with childcare bills and all the other expenses that come with having a family. But we were lucky: we had jobs that gave us health care. So twelve years ago, when our baby daughter Sasha woke up sick one night, I didn’t think twice about taking her to the pediatrician in the morning, because I knew our insurance would cover the cost of that visit. And thank God I did, because our doctor took one look at her and sent us straight to the emergency room, worried that Sasha might have meningitis — a diagnosis that was later confirmed at the hospital.
During the three long days Sasha spent in the hospital, our only worry was about our baby girl’s health. The care she received probably cost thousands of dollars, but we didn’t spend a single minute worrying about money because we knew our insurance plan would cover the bills. Every mother in this country deserves this kind of security for herself and for her family — and more than anything else, that’s really what the new health care law is all about.

hello…….
Happy First, Mariele! Well done! 🙂
Congrats on 1st Mariele!!
LOVELY POST, UT!!!!
Thanks so much Bob!
Thank YOU, UT!
Speaker Pelosi (I know she’s not, but that’s her title in the minds of Dems) is a national treasure.
Along with our President’s expression when he ruthlessly said, “Please proceed, Governor,” her expression of horror and disbelief when Joe “You Lie” Wilson shouted in the House chambers (in his first SOTU address) will be remembered forever.
Snarky Ezra Klein’s blog makes it sound like this is a deep dark secret, just hate that blog’s smarmy tone), so keep us posted, BobFR. You explain things much more clearly than those teasingly smug “newspaper” sites).
WTG, Speaker Pelosi!
Even Republicans Blame Republicans For The Shutdown
Of course I posted this at the end of the last thread…that’s my job, right?
UT, this post is absolutely scrumdiddlyumptious!!!
Thanks Dudette!
These words of wisdom from Cory Booker need to be posted at the entrance to every church in America! They need to be read aloud to congregations, and recited by the congregation.
This is the gospel I hear preached at the church I attend in OKC every Sunday. Our ministers and church live this out, too. I told my husband this is the hardest gospel to live I have ever heard preached, as it has nothing to do with getting to heaven, or feeling good and gooey about Jesus. It is all to do with how we treat each other, as our pastor says: “every single other.”
^5!
A Man on Fire…..Bashir says on the National Mall in DC?
Oh lord. Everyday the crazy comes out!
This has been a rough week for DC.

Police are responding to reports of a man on fire in the National Mall. No further info available
I may be wrong, but I don’t recall Speaker Nan ever putting something up, without knowing to the person, that she had the votes. She didn’t need anything like a Hastart rule to whip up votes. That being said, I wonder if she already knows who the ‘pubs are that would make an attempt at a discharge petition successful. Seems odd she’d be so public announcing her intent.
Strategy… cookemom..
if Boehner knows that she has the votes for that petition…he may just bring a resolution to floor before the petition takes effect…in a way to save face

Hi Nena, per the healthcare.gov website, the number for individuals is 1-800-318-2596; and for small biz it is 1-800-706-7893
Thanks Doc.
Oh mine….that means earlier today, I gave someone the wrong number. I will get that corrected, NOW.

You’re welcome. 😀
GE TOD…… Wonderful round-up, UT! Hope everyone has a great weekend………..
A 6yr. old (whose mother runs a support website for military families) writes to JSOC Command’s Admiral McRaven, and gets a response!
Awww. Such a cutie pie!
nice!
My goodness:
why would she retweet this? You can find that kind of language on any RWNJ site. I think she elevates whoever said that by acknowledging it, as a sitting Senator.
I don’t think so. The person who sent it to her is not mentioned and she did not respond to it. I think she just wanted to point out that the person’s profile goes against the vile language in their tweet.
by referencing it she elevates the person’s twitterprint. I think some things speak for themselves.
On the contrary, I think MORE people should call out this kind of behavior. Hold a mirror up to the face of the person doing it.
Evil persists when good people do and say nothing.
I disagree, as a Senator, her referencing this nut only elevates him/her. It puts them on her level or drags her down to theirs, imo. If the person was a known public figure or a fellow congress critter, then yeah, by all means, call them out. However, this was just one of those crazy folks that we’ve all seen at the teanutbutter rallies, on faux entertainment shows, and on any right wing site out there. If I’m her, I wouldn’t even let them know I acknowledge it at all.
‘Evil persists when good people do and say nothing.’
maybe instead of giving this person an even wider audience, she could have just tweeted something addressing how hate is tweeted by so-called christians. Quoting the tweet verbatim not necessary.
We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one.
I see way to much of this crap for my taste. It won’t stop unless these people are called on it. I don’t care who it is. I hope that person gets flamed so badly, they just get off the Twittah for good.
I think the best thing we can do is send her messages of encouragement. It can’t be easy getting these kind of vile messages – and I’m sure they have to put up with this abuse all day (all their staff, too). We should show her there are more of us, than there are crazies who call themselves Christians, but have no idea what Christianity is really all about. The more of us who respond positively will also show the crazies that they are not in the majority – and may inspire them to crawl back into their holes or caves, or whatever dark place they’ve crawled out from. Not everyone is as strong as President Obama when dealing with this kind of hate.
Excellent idea theo! DONE!
Thank you! 😀
Good job Dudette 🙂
Thanks GGail.
That’s a good suggestion Theo!
I agree, we should let her know we have her back and keep her uplifted in showing appreciation for her efforts. We should do this on the regular with all of our reps who have to put up with this sort of nastiness. My only observation is that by her personally putting the person’s actual tweet out there serves to give it more credence and eyeballs than it would have otherwise had. She doesn’t have to be as strong as PBO to simply ignore a person’s tweet. She can tweet about hate language from the nuts without using the the person’s words.
You can bet somewhere, someone is going, ‘woot, woot, Claire McCaskill mentioned my tweet!’. That person becomes a hero in the sick minds of the haters. A sitting US Senator acknowledged them.
Just my humble opinion. I’d rather not give them any reason to think they have bothered her in the least bit.
we good though.
We good. 🙂
{{{{cookemon}}}}
I agree with you 100%! If we continue to ignore evil we normalize it and make it acceptable. I am glad the Senator exposed this evil twitter who pretends to be a Christian.
I’m glad she calls out the hypocrites. I assume from this no one knows who he actually is, but the point is that these so-called “Christians” (including those infesting CONGRESS, and that may be what she’s subtly getting at) are not who they claim to be.
Would this jerk have the guts to look her in the eye and say what he said?
So the shutdown is an existential threat to representative democracy???
Answer: what else could it be?
Not the Deficit. That is shrinking.
Not the Spending. The Obama Administration spending the least of any in last 50,100 years.
The ACA? Maybe. But I bet in 6 months the ACA will be a forbidden topic of the GOP, just aas Marriage equality is a no-no for the MSM now.
I’m left with not only do the TP/Corporatists want to shut down the government, they want to cripple it permanently. Burn it down. They can’t own it so they will destroy it.
Too harsh?
What I mean about marriage equality is that is a Democratic success. That’s why GOP doesn’t talk about it anymore.
ACA Obamacare will be/is the biggest success of all. Soon GOP/TP will be silent on this too.
not too harsh…they came to Washington to burn it down…that is why they cannot compromise or negotiate…
JACKSON, Ohio — JACKSON, Ohio (AP) — A settlement has been reached in a federal lawsuit challenging the display of a portrait of Jesus that had been in an Ohio school for years.
The Ohio chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union on Friday announced they have agreed to settle the lawsuit against the Jackson City School District.
The ACLU in a statement said the agreement requires the district to permanently remove the portrait and to pay the organization damages and legal fees “totaling nearly six figures.”
The school in April said it had removed the portrait. But negotiations on the settlement stalled after it was discovered that the portrait had returned to the school lawn for a prayer meeting, and was also visible to those entering an art-storage area.

Not seeing it.
But for what it’s worth, I still remember the beginning of a poem that appeared in my high schools’ “literary” magazine, that was published only once a year if I’m remembering correctly.
For all you lonely people
Unlimited in size
Come pray beneath my temple
Know that man up in the skies.
Don’t remember the rest of the poem, but the next line started with “Y.”
This was when Country Joe and the Fish’s “Feel like I’m Fixin’ to Die” was all the rage (at the height of the Vietnam War carnage). Was written by a boy who knew he had to register for the draft on his 18th BD.
Vanessa Sink @LiveMusicGirl
Just witnessed the craziest thing ever… a man set himself on fire and danced down the Mall. #horrifying
Vanessa Sink and other Twitter users also posted pictures of a helicopter landing on the lawn, and emergency responders surrounding a man on the ground. The D.C. police department tweeted that there was an “injured citizen.” Traffic is blocked around the National Mall.
From the Associated Press:
Fire crews responded Friday afternoon to a report of a man on fire at 7th and Madison streets. A witness says she saw a man dump a red canister of gasoline on his head and then set himself on fire.
D.C. Fire Department spokesman Tim Wilson says the man has life-threatening injuries.
His name and age weren’t immediately known.
Whatever the current stat is—–that 1 in 4 of us have mental issues?——-might be a generous conclusion. Lots of untreated mentally ill walking among us—–as we witness daily.
Strange that the description of the man AFTER setting himself on fire was that he “danced down the Mall”. I hardly think he was dancing while on fire…
Krystal Ball’s article is precisely what I was talking about upthread. Same frightening idea only Krystal puts the matter beautifully and factually. Whereas I am mildly hysterical with worry.
Please read Krystals article if you have the time.
And thank you PF58 for posting it.
ok
History tells me the shutdown is about state’s rights…even though there’s no such thing. It’s about diminishing federal government, so states can invalidate federal authority. We see states persist in nullification efforts because the truth is, Republicans are still fighting the Civil War. It’s about “taking the country back” from a Black man, demeaning him and his legacy so history books advance the idea that “another one” should never be elected and assure their own supremacy. That is and has been the end game since the election of our splendid President and the rise of the terrible tea party. The don’t really believe in the Constitution…they are still delusional about the Articles of Confederation.

** IMPORTANT **
Dotster linked to this warning at the tail end of this morning’s R&S, and I think it’s too important to overlook.
In fact, this appears to be another “call to arms” moment for the militant, anarchist RWNJs (like Waco and Ruby Ridge were in the 1990s).
I’ve seen others besides BobFR link today’s RWNJs to anarchists, but I’m not sure who else sees the similarities. If anyone here knows someone who can get the word out, by all means tweet a link to this article.
The pic in the tweet is a partial statement from the Iowa GOP State HQ website:
“A message posted on the party website cautions ‘constitutional activists’ that central Iowa police are planning traffic safety checkpoints in Polk County tonight.
The Iowa GOP strongly urges you NOT to give in to any illegal searches of your car,” party officials said in the post Thursday. ‘Only comply by providing your license, registration and insurance if requested.’
Republican officials also tell Iowans to videotape or audio record police officers, then send the recordings to party headquarters. Iowans shouldn’t allow a search of their vehicle for any reason, the message says.'”
If, no… WHEN President Obama wins this important fight to preserve the Constitution, we’re going to see some ugly incidents. It will get worse before it gets better.
wondered if the local police departments and the Dem leaders in Iowa and the US Iowa representatives (senate and house) need to know? since it is in the hometown paper, may be they know.
these people are ready to get into all kinds of extreme behavior
BETHESDA, Md. — BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — Lockheed Martin says it will furlough 3,000 employees on Monday due to the government shutdown.
The big defense contractor said Friday that the number of employees put on furlough will increase weekly if the shutdown continues.
Lockheed says the furloughs include employees who are unable to work because the government facility where they perform their work is closed, those whose work requires a government inspection that cannot be completed or the company has received a stop work order.
Earlier this week, United Technologies Corp. announced that it will furlough 2,000 employees by Monday and more than 5,000 if the shutdown continues into next month.
Well, what say you, big defense contractors? Gonna give Boehner a call?
Not to mention, employees who work for contractors are not considered for back pay resolution, unless the contracting company decides to do so. Boehner’s really gonna get an ear full.
Why is Panetta chiminin in ? Gawd I wish these ” formers” would keep their mouths shut….
He’s a has-been but probably thinks he’ll be a big shoe-in when his friends the Clintons run in 2016. It is extremely ungracious of Panetta to offer his comments or advice about his previous boss, since he’s no longer with the administration. (Never liked Leon before; don’t like what he agreed to talk about today.)
Nobody’s the President but the President, and we have the best President ehvah!
I never like him either…
I don’t know why, but I’ve always felt that there is something lazy or second-tier about him … felt that way when he worked for Clinton, too.
Infuriating! I can’t imagine going on TV to evaluate my former boss, and deign to give “advice”. Surely, the President would accept Leon’s phone call, if he had legitimate advice to give? Better yet, why did he retire, if he still wanted to be involved in decision making? Not good.
Good points! And your “phone call” reference is what really frosts me. If he left on good terms, and I’m pretty sure he did, why not pick up the phone and call the President to offer his “help”? Why not call Republicans in Congress he still knows from when they were good old boys together, and chat?
Indeed!
Hi TOD!!!
That’s my avatar leading the pack in this thread! Great thread UT!
Love me some FLOTUS!!
Well in today’s episode of “Days of our Lives in DC” we get an email from management telling us that some man has poured gasoline on himself and lit himself on fire at the National Mall.
These sirens and police rushing to the hill is become a regular event….
After all this drama this week, I’m going out with friends and I’m gonna have myself a couple of Apple Martinis (and I barely ever drink).
Later!
LOL – I almost said to myself, “this looks like donnadem!” when I first saw the thread….
Sadly it was reported that the man died from his severe burns.

how many of these very rich people now angry about the GOPShutdown actually funded the election of these extremists?

32 Republicans Who Caused the Government Shutdown
Meet the House conservative hardliners.
SVATI KIRSTEN NARULA, RYAN JACOBS, AND JUDITH OHIKUAREOCT 4 2013, 4:46 PM ET
—————————————————————
Friday was the fourth day of the government shutdown, and there’s still no sign of an exit. What’s surprising about the ongoing fight is how a small group of members of Congress have managed to bring Washington to a halt. Just months ago, Speaker John Boehner was warning that forcing the government to shut down over Obamacare or anything else was politically hazardous. Yet Boehner remains stuck, his strategy dictated by a small rump of members in the Republican caucus who refuse to budge.
.
.
So who are those hardliners? To create this list, we started with a roster that the Senate Conservatives Fund, a group aligned with Ted Cruz, created of representatives who were allied with them.
————————————————————-
http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2013/10/32-republicans-who-caused-the-government-shutdown/280236/
This DEMOCRATIC representative cut through red tape with the assistance of federal workers in his office and at the NIH, overrode the shutdown, and got help for a cancer victim in his district – as seen on Rev. Al’s show. Bravo!
Sometimes I think the media treats our President as if domestic and world events are just an opportunity to play “keep the ball away” from the President.
It’s Obama’s fault that he won’t negotiate with Boehner, with no mention that the shutdown COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IN SEPT if Boehner had held a vote. How are average American supposed to know this fact if the MSM conveniently “forgets” to tell them this fact?
From Saturday, Sep 28:
Obama’s foreign policy is “floundering in the Middle East.” F***you, McKay Coppins and all of the DC beltway echo-chamber.
This week’s meme is “OMG, China has the upper hand in the Pacific region. OMG, the sky is F A L L I N G !!!
JHC. All this in less than a week.
Of course, if he HAD gone on the trip, it would’ve been “Obama neglects domestic crisis at home to hobnob in Asia” – and there would have been no mention of it being a manufactured crisis by the TeaThuglicans!
Oy, they make me ill! 🙄
I am willing to bet that right wing fat head McKay Coppins thinks Iraq was a success for G.W and Cheney.
Actually, the last headline is a legitimate concern. If the US wants to be pre-occupied with tea party priorities, then they must know that the rest of the world continues to turn. If there’s a deal to be made, the parties aren’t going to hold off taking on a different partner who’s already sitting at the table, just because they respect President Obama. If China is there, they’ll get the deal. And who in their right mind would make a deal with a country that can’t even keep its own government open – and is threatening to default on its bills, rather than making a deal with a more stable partner.
We may not like it. We know the President doesn’t like it. But, the current shenanigans demonstrates once again that the GOP don’t have a clue about the economy or running sustainable businesses. The damage they’re doing now with this shutdown and the threats of default are long-lasting and will be far-reaching. Contrary to the belief of many Americans, there are plenty of places in the world to do business, to travel and to send kids to school. It’s not like it was 30 years ago. And President Obama will only be President for 3.5 more years – the thought of what will happen after that is a frightening prospect. And it’s probably doubly frightening for corporations and countries who are thinking of signing long term, multi-billion dollar deals that will live past President Obama’s administration.
If there’s a chance that the GOP can come back into power, then that’s probably going to impact some decisions on the global stage. There are real consequences to the GOP actions of these past few years. The world’s been watching – even if most Americans haven’t been.
We’ve already seen them align themselves with Putin. Can you imagine them in power and having to now deal with him and back track what they’ve said already? They think it’s all fun and games but they never think about how the game ends.
Thanks for the vid, Chips. All I could say was: “PBO!” “Joe!” And “JAAAAY!!!” 😆
Umm. This is getting way too familiar to West Wing.
lol
Thanks for the video, Chips. I reaaaaaaaally dig the two kewl guys.
They’re theeeeeeeee best, Asher!!!
I know, right! This is one of my absolute favorite scenes! 🙂
Awww man, they cut the video before the BEST part comes… After media folks get pictures of the President sitting there in the hall waiting to negotiate. Josh gets the bright idea — let’s just leave now. President Bartlett and crew walk out, while the Republicans are in their room scheming and snickering. They open the door to cameras flashing and the hallway empty of everyone except media. They look like the useless idiots they are. President Bartlett WINS on optics, strategy and downright chutzpah! LOVED IT!
The people were very please to see the President.
Boehner is sending the House of Representatives home for the weekend
What ?
Why not? They’re not doing much good in DC, might as well go home. Maybe they’ll hear from some of their constituents who really need a functioning government.
Maybe I’m looking at this cockeyed, but it seems to me Boehner is screwed either way it goes. I can’t see how he can hold on to his Speakership which is obviously more important to him than the country. He has nothing to lose by deciding to do the right thing. In fact, he can walk away with a little dignity. If my caucus put me in the position they have placed him, I’d act like they didn’t exist…form an alliance with my moderate Republicans and the Dems and shut the Tea Party completely out.
I hope he does that…..
Indeed, FayPax! It’s true Boehner my lose the Speakership, but he would regain his self dignity. Right now the tea baggers know they can bully him and make him do what they demand, although his heart may not be in it. And the rest of us are seeing him for what he is: A man with absolutely no back-bone. He says one thing today and does absolutely the opposite tomorrow after he has been buried by tea baggers.
New post.

Ct. news reporting that Miriam Carey was “obsessed” with President Obama and wanted to meet him. Police had been called twice to her home due to her erratic behavior, reportedly at least once by her boyfriend, the baby’s father. The boyfriend told police he feared she may harm their baby. She told police that President Obama was electronically monitoring her condo. Her sister told CNN that she was on drugs to treat psychosis but was tapering off under a dr.’s direction.

I enjoyed FLOTUS article, and she spoke the truth. I believe if the administration want to use her voice to speak to Mothers and women out there she can be very valuable, encouraging them to sign up for Obamacare..
How dare the freakin’ House GOP dogs think they can fund only the agencies that will hurt them the most “optically” during the shutdown! All for one and one for all, or nothing!
