POTUS did a GREAT job today putting everything into proper perspective. People who didn’t get a chance to see it, check out the video. POTUS was really all about HAMMER TIME, as Ladyhawke said. BRAVO.

President Obama’s “ECONOMIC SHUTDOWN” framing is brilliant.

The public may not relate to raising the debt limit but economic shutdown makes sense and should get everybody’s attention.

    Great line:.

It angers and saddens me to see and hear the derisive, uninformed, and flat out wrong comments by the Bachmans and Issas of the world. But more importantly, it shows that they really don’t understand, or perhaps don’t care, that their grand-standing will do lasting, and real damage to our country.

UT, thank you, once again, for this magnificent summary. The president is taking no prisoners. He’s laying it out so there will be absolutely no ambiguity. I love the part where he says if you feel disrespected, it’s your own attitude that’s the problem. IOWs, do your job and maybe you’ll earn the respect you crave. This is exactly what you would say to a bunch of teenagers in a pout about being ‘dissed.’ That the President of the United States has to say this to theoretically grown congressmen is a truly shameful state of affairs.

And what is with the comment “We don’t want to be here …” Are they talking about being “at work?” Because they are almost never at work anyway. Have we just caught them saying they really do want to be elected and paid to DO NOTHING!??? God, I could not hate Republicans more than I do in this moment, God help me, but it is true!

      October 3, 2013 at 12:07 pm

‘we don’t want to be here’ means that they don’t want to be in the position of having to figure out which faction in the ‘Pub party to cater to. Paul seems to be saying that something’s gotta give and they might have to prepare themselves for the wrath of the teanuts.

Paul has to straddle the fence for his 2016 hopes and has to appear to be the level headed moderate/conservative/libertarian/moderate/conservative/libertarian. McTurlte has to worry about his upcoming primary where he’s not doing too well in the polls against his primary opponent, nor the Dem opponent.

      October 3, 2013 at 12:37 pm

I’m thinking this whole “hot mic” incident is staged (another GOP stunt) by Paul & McConnell. McConnell indicates awareness of being “wired up” knowing fully well that whatever he says is going to be transmitted. There’s no way they would stand in front of the WH and engage in a conversation like this if they truly wanted it to be private. The question remains, what exactly did they hope to accomplish by this charade? I’m thinking they did this to get the 18 or so House GOP who are willing to vote on the CR bill back into the fold and renege on their promise to vote for a clean CR bill.

There were some reports that McConnell had left the meeting early without any explanation as why. He did not emerge with the others when the house and senate leaders were briefing the press about what transpired. But he’s busy plotting with Paul on a hot mic?

Another thing that gives me some pause is the speed with which the usual MSM suspects seemed willing to pick this up. Jon Karl? Chris Hayes? Hmmm….Some things are not adding up. I’m curious about the original source of the video clip. Now I may be completely off base here, but I think we need to proceed with caution, and if we’re on the right track, then that’s great. But there is NOTHING that the GOP and their allies in the MSM won’t stoop to at this point.

        Hi HF2,

To clarify, this story actually broke yesterday when McConnell was mic’d up for an interview with his local (friendly) news station in Kentucky. Which is the original source of the video. http://www.wpsdlocal6.com/home/ticker/Live-mic-catches-Senators-McConnell-and-Paul-talking-strategy-226238531.html

I just took it from Youtube and spread it around. I can appreciate your suspicions considering who we are dealing with but I think Meta’s tweet down thread from Robert Acosta about this memo from Boehner pointing out all the times that they supposedly compromised and that the President and the Dems won’t, sort of confirms what Paul is saying in this video as to what their strategy should be. Keep saying that they are compromising over and over again until they “win”. I could be wrong for spreading it and you could be right and this could all just be a setup but I thought it was worth getting it out into the mainstream.

I’m glad you put it out there. Politico has it up with well over 100 comments, last I looked. It almost doesn’t matter whether or not it was planned. What matters is the optic of them scheming for their own self interest with so much at stake. I won’t go so far as to say the MSM is in on this. That takes believing that the entire media has conspired to aid and abet 2 senators in advance to ‘accidently’ catch them on a hot mic. News outlets are all about the scoop, they’re not that cooperative with each other at this level. Their cooperation with each other comes in the board room, on the golf courses, and at the monthly ALEC meetings.

          Hi donna,

No problem at all and thanks for the clarification!! My post was in no way intended to criticize you or anyone else (well apart from GOP & MSM) – Some thoughts occurred to me while I was parsing through the comments about specifics of what was said between the two men. Then I went back and re-watched the tape and was left with an unsettling feeling afterwards. McConnell could have very well authorized his friendly local station to record the exchange and then release the video on Youtube. So this has more to do with my suspicion about the R’s (and the R-supporting media) and their constant stunt-pulling at every opportunity than it is about you or even the video. In fact I think it’s good that you found the video and decided to spread it around because whether or not it’s staged, it reflects the desperation and cravenness of the GOP in a situation where real people’s lives are being affected in profound ways. So I commend you for shining a spotlight on the video, and I echo the sentiments of others on TOD and elsewhere, extremely grateful that you brought this to our awareness.

We all have the same goal here which is doing what’s best to help our hard-working President and ordinary American citizens!

I don’t think this was planned at all. They are not that smart or that stupid. McConnell gave the warning that he had the mic however, when Rand started talking, McConnell simply forgot.

I think Rand was clueless and did not consider at all that the conversation would be recorded. He had no clue. none. There was no positive in something like this getting out to the public. This is in the range of 47% Romney conversation. There is no logic in setting yourself up. Not even in any GOP alternate universe.

My thoughts on “We don’t want to be here.” Is saying they don’t want to be in this shutdown with the spotlight on them as causing it, but they think it will work for them and be worth it. It may be a ploy, but it also could just be exuberance in the situation.

    THE RECKLESS REPUBLICAN SHUTDOWN

So now we have the following ……

    1) There is the letter from the 80 members of the House suicide caucus to Boehner stating they wanted a shutdown over Obamacare.

    2) We had ‘Senator’ Rafael Edward Cruz telling the ‘House’ members to hang tough on the shutdown.

    3) The Republicans were “GIDDY” when the government eventually did shutdown.

    4) Michelle Bachmann said it’s exactly what we wanted and we got it.

    5) We have the revealing hot mic incident between Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul.

    6) Congressman Stutzman advised that they won’t be disrespected. They have to get something out of this. He doesn’t know what but something.

When pressed by Republican donors last month to explain why the party seemed willing to flirt with a government shutdown, Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) reportedly said that the tea party left the GOP with no choice.

Well, this time republicans have gone too far and reporters don’t have the choice. However, the cynic in me also sees this as the effect of corporate America having decided it’s time to kill the Tea Party, so the GOP isn’t decimated in the mid-terms, and Chris Christie or Jeb Bush or another “non-crazy” republican can win the White House in 2016.

You know, aside from us feeling , as usual, quite proud of the President’s down-to-earth speech, and of the Dems solidarity this time around, I’m also wondering whether we are internalizing the other ‘major accomplishment’ this morning? It seems that for the 2nd time, IN A BIG WAY, we have received evidence that #wethepeople have a MEDIA role to play – that we can make an impact if we stick with it. I’m referring to DD4O’s finding real news and putting it out there, along with help from the team – as someone said ‘awesome sauce’! Taking positive, calm, persistent action, positioned for maximum input, as individuals AND as a team, clearly beats grumbling and name-calling (or arguing among ourselves).

With equal respect for others who stood with her by retweeting and directing tweets to specific point!!

An excellent observation vc. I could not agree more. The TOD Truth Team is fierce. They do not play. They traffic in the facts. And holding the feckless media accountable is a 24X7 undertaking. Nothing gives me more joy than seeing a TOD tweet calling out the likes of Chuck Todd and his ilk. They are an embarrassment to the profession of journalism. Holding their feet to the fire is definitely making an impact. It’s a thing of beauty.

This is not breaking news, this is just more BS from Boehner. He’s been saying the same thing all year, but actions speak louder than words.

    • October 3, 2013 at 12:48 pm

I wonder is he beginning to freak though, HF, about being responsible for a default? That on one side, Teabaggers on the other…. you built that, GOP.

      • 96 hopefruit2
        October 3, 2013 at 12:54 pm

If he is willing to bring a clean debt ceiling authorization bill, then I will be reassured, but based on this in the same NYT article

//”“The speaker has always been clear that a default would be disastrous for our economy,” said Michael Steel, a spokesman for Mr. Boehner. “He’s also been clear that a ‘clean’ debt hike cannot pass the House. That’s why the president and Senate Democrats should drop their ‘no negotiations’ stance, and work with us on a plan to raise the debt limit in a responsible way, with spending cuts and reforms to get our economy moving again and create jobs.” //

So it sounds like more of the same, where they will bring the debt ceiling vote to the floor but it has to come with a ton of spending cut concessions. PBO has already said this is a no-go. Seems like Boehner is trying to etch-a-sketch and hit the reset button by appearing to be reasonable and willing to cooperate, when he really isn’t.

    • October 3, 2013 at 1:00 pm

until Speaker Cruz and the teabaggers put that ball gag back in this mout I doubt he got permission to say that or it’s just another BS comment talking point that McConnell and AynRand Paul is floating. I don’t believe it until he does it. I can’t stand all their faux drama.

I agree. The GOP is full of endless silly stunts and posturing. Apparently that’s what the American taxpayer is giving them a $174K base annual salary to do.

Eric Cantor just supposedly released a memo basically doubling down on their talking points that PBO & the Dems are “refusing to engage/negotiate” while they are the responsible ones, bringing bill after bill to the floor.

He was a republican. Also saw a clip from Jimmy Kimmel’s Show interviewing people in the street about whether they liked Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act. I am so glad to see that Leader Reid has apologized if feelings have been hurt. Can we get an up or down vote on the CR now?? There is also this as it relates to feelings – The jackals and John Harwood have been very concerned about President Obama’s TONE lately. They don’t think it is conducive to working together for PBO to explain to the American people the damage being done to the country by the House Republicans. So according to the jackals hurting the House Republicans widdle feelwings in not appropriate behavior. Hopefully, Harry’s apology will suffice. We shall see.

As you all know, I’m always running behind technology. Even my local hospital is stepping way ahead of me!!!
I have an appointment for an MRI early next week to check if everything in my head is as it should be [Shut up, Chips! Shut up, Amk…or any other of you wiseacres! 😀 ] So, the appropriate department mailed me a pre-registration form to speed up admission, I guess. I can do so online, by fax, or by the lowly telephone (last listed option). While I’m deciding which to use 1, or 3, I notice at the very top of the letter

“To pre-register from your smartphone scan here!” 🙄 Well give me a break, I barely know how to pick up messages from my cell phone! In fact, I didn’t even know it was smart until a friend mentioned ‘Oooo, you’ve finally gotten a smart phone!’
