Meh, Not a BFD. Did people like ellen give the credit for gay rights where it is rightly due? Old white peeps, who see the reason at the end of their lives, do not move me.

        Ellen gave PBO props bigtime.

Hear what you’re saying about old people seeing reason at the end of their lives. I felt the same way when I watched Driving Miss Daisy. That old biddy treated Morgan Freeman’s character for decades, then when she became old and decrepit and no one cared for her except him, she’s all “you’re my best friend”. Ugh!

      • October 3, 2013 at 3:45 am

I’m with you, amk. What did Bush 1.0 do for gay rights when he was leader of the free world and actually had something to lose? I haven’t heard him speaking out about all the hatefulness being spewed by his party. Nice gesture, but it costs him nothing now.

Sometimes I feel like we’re in a live episode of the West Wing. Even more freaky when you consider that the presidential candidate in the last couple of years was fashioned after then Senator Obama. It’s no wonder why we’re all riveted!

“…When federal employees are furloughed, that doesn’t just mean federal scientific work stops. It means federal scientists can’t take phone calls or answer emails. They are not available for scientific collaboration or consultation with non-federal peers. It is illegal for them to do public business when on furlough. Really. This phrase was in a furlough letter shared with me, as well as one shown to Politico:

“Due to legal requirements, working in any way during a period of furlough is grounds for disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment…”

Most major federal science websites went dark yesterday in part because of this rule. Putting up a “Gone for Federal Shutdown” placeholder page effectively freezes out both employees and constituents. In a comment on Reddit, a federal employee said:

“If those sites go down, expect them to stay down. We aren’t even allowed to troubleshoot or restart anything. They made us lock our BlackBerries in our desks when we left.”

Two main groups of researchers are affected by the shutdown–”intramural” federal researchers (federal employees) and “extramural” researchers, scientists and staff funded via the federal grant award system. For federal intramural researchers that work with livestock, animal care is deemed to be an “essential service.” Federal research cows will still be milked and veterinary patients will still receive care. Things in culture that don’t have a backbone–including plants, bacteria, and insects–receive more variable treatment during a shutdown. Sometimes care is deemed essential, sometimes not.

For extramural researchers, the shutdown means that doing any scientific work just got a lot harder.

The USDA is closed. If you want to import something plant- or animal-related into or out of the US for your research, you can’t look up the regulations or apply for a permit. If you want to learn more about USDA bee research…you can’t look it up. In addition, nearly all USDA bee researchers (as well as other Ag researchers) are furloughed, so you can’t call and ask.

The National Science Foundation funds basic research in the US; this includes atmospheric science, geology, biological systems, and engineering. It has furloughed 95% of it’s employees. No grant panels will convene for review; all new awards are likely to be significantly delayed for months. NSF Federal grant payments are issued yearly, even for multi-year awards. (That’s fair; you have to show good progress to keep getting the money.) Because October is a major month in the grant cycle, some investigators and their students will be unpaid for at least one month; longer depending on how long the shutdown drags on…”

Wish it were hyperbole, but it’s the TRUTH ….

Nothing that we are living witnesses as events unfold has any precedence in US history with the exception of Jeff Davis resigning from the US Senate and then leading an effort to destroy America.

    NOTHING.

These are not idle words of some fool posting, in the middle of the night, conspiracies theories. This is precisely what is happening, real time, in the United States of America.

Wish it was not so. Sadly, it is.

#TrustBarack …. but he is only one person and without the majority of Americans standing on the line with him our 200+ year, unique experiment in democracy will end.

I noticed it yesterday morning, amk. An hour of Republican lies and liars. An anchor twit who read her script, no questions. I wondered if her mommy had to tie her shoes before driving her to work that morning.

I don’t expect a PBO fan club – but in the beginning weeks they had sane Republicans on (the few that exist). Yesterday I wondered if I was watching msnbc.

Hubby has noticed a shift to the crazy as well and he works from home and has more access to tv news than I do.

I noticed that too—-slipped in Keystone Pipeline and corp. tax cuts—–as 2 dandy little items that PBO could “negotiate” on—–(surrender)—-as Ford’s limo idles out in front, waiting to take him to the Waldorf for breakfast.

After reading Andrew Sullivan’s piece, I was reminded of a chilling event in 1964, and that was Barry Goldwater’s acceptance speech at the Republican convention in San Francisco. During that speech he said: “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.”
This horror has been building since then.

Morning news of the day–the president refuses to negotiate. This is NBC from Philly. They did show both Boehner and Pelosi so both sides were represented but there is no blame being put on repubs. If that’s all people see, they are clueless. When the senate gets the new house bill they should pass it with an amendment attached that opens the rest of the govt.–=-in effect a clear CR.

Looks like Alec Baldwin is going to be a fun msnbc host. After being warned by Phil Griffin to tone it down, he spent all day yesterday tweeting delicious slams against Morning Joke and his revolting guest, Bill Kristol. I don’t think Baldwin can be corralled, so this will be interesting.

NY Times wants to have it both ways – they’re out early concern trolling the ACA, but refuse to point out the source of the very element they’re criticizing. Thankfully, we have folks like Bill Burton who is vigilant about the MSM’s inclination to protect the GOP at all costs while undermining our President and his efforts.

      October 3, 2013 at 8:40 am

I was happy to see Bill Burton’s response tweet also. I see the NYT did bother to mention in the body of the story that GOP governors who refused to expand Medicaid were the contributing culprits here, but the headline was misleading.

I had an Twitter exchange last night with an individual who tried to pull the “ACA increased premiums!” crap, and I set him straight about the Republican state officials who were controlling the state markets. I haven’t heard a word from him since.

I’m hoping President Obama will give an address to the country explaining the seriousness of this planned coup d’état, and why it is a constitutional crisis. Most people do not understand what is going on here in the long term, that they actually do have a chance of losing their democracy. With Congress’s ratings so low, I think people would be open to this, and he is a good explainer. This is WAY beyond anything economic.

even though i know how they’re going to spin it each time, it still amazes me when it starts happening. n.p.r. this morning is “reporting” all these different things being shutdown, and has all these people disgusted about it, but never any explanation about how this shutdown is 100% fabricated by republicans.

instead every “report” i hear leaves a listener completely in the dark about this fact and thinking it was just inevitable. NO, a law was passed and litigated to the supreme court and ready to start, and republicans created all this pain and suffering out of the blue as a political game. almost everyone i’ve spoken to about this so far doesn’t know these facts and just whines about that big, bad inefficient government. mission accomplished for the owners of “the news.”

Morning everyone:) Happy Anniversary to our wonderful First Couple. Ironically, I have a wedding to go to after work today! The student teacher from last year is getting married today….now I’ll remember HER anniversary every year and she’ll be so impressed that I remembered…when really, it was PBO/FLOTUS that I REALLY remembered…her wedding just happened to fall on their day:) No matter the reason, she’ll be happy I thought of her. None the wiser:)

I was watching AC360 last night (well, not really watching…clicking threw channels….and AC asked some Dem congressman what Dems could offer Republicans that would make this shutdown go away. If I HAD a rock at that moment, it would have gone threw the damn TV!!!! Clueless idiots.

Update: Around midnight I was able to get through the entire application process at healthcare.gov after being able to create an account during the day. Got all the way through – the next step was to see my eligibility results and FINALLY see Illinois rates.

Blank. Wouldn’t connect to the eligiblity rates. Waited for Live Chat for 35 minutes, then I got sleepy. Will try again today.

I do need to amend my application. I’m assuming I am not the only stupid person in America who needs to do that, right?

    RIGHT?!?!

    Anyway, we’re making progress.

      October 3, 2013 at 8:51 am

Another update: thanks to the Evildoers who refused to fund a proper roll out. I thought maybe I could find a navigator and at least ask some questions and see the damn rates for Illinois. Put in my zip code. There is one location, open 9-5, weekdays. “Evenings and weekends as needed.” No email. Just a phone number and I got a busy signal.

I certainly can extend the search beyond my zip code. But this is Republican sabotage, pure and simple.

      • 60 99ts
        October 3, 2013 at 9:17 am

And NO-One in the media is talking about who stopped funding the roll-out. Hang in there 57 – I’m waiting to hear when you have it all done.

    • 64 hopefruit2
      October 3, 2013 at 9:06 am

I think he will eventually do something like this – but his timing is impeccable. He will do it when it has maximum impact – when the nation is fully ready to listen to him, and not the media, or their coworker, or their best friend on facebook, or their brother-in-law.
