“In many cases, premiums will cost significantly less than what was originally projected,” Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told reporters on a conference call. The report finds that 95 percent of Americans live in states where the premiums for individually purchased health insurance will be less than what had originally been expected. The health insurance exchanges are one of the supporting pillars of the health reforms called for under the 2010 Affordable Care Act. The law, widely known as Obamacare, is meant to get more Americans covered by health insurance so they’ll take better care of their health….

All plans offered on the exchanges have to meet the minimum requirements imposed by the federal government, including a list of 10 areas they must cover, from paying 100 percent of the cost for breast or colon cancer screening to paying for mental health care. Insurers will no longer be able to dump patients who are starting to cost too much, they won’t be able to charge women more than men, and they have to cover anyone who can pay.

“Because of the Affordable Care Act, the health insurance that people are buying will actually cover them,” Cohen said. And the federal government will pay for part of the premiums. The government will help pay the premiums for anyone making up to about $46,000 for an individual and as much as $94,000 for a family of four.

California has become the first state in the nation to commit to raising the minimum wage to $10 per hour, with the increase to take place gradually through the start of 2016, under a bill signed into law by Democratic Governor Jerry Brown on Wednesday.

The law raises minimum pay in the most populous U.S. state from its current rate of $8 per hour to $9 by July 2014, and $10 by January 2016, well above the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.

The measure won support from Democrats, passing the California state Senate by a vote of 26-11 and the Assembly by a 51-25 vote. But it was opposed by many Republicans, who said it would hurt small businesses and ultimately cost some low-wage workers their jobs.

Interesting story from one public servant helping PBO at the White House highlighting why ObamaCare is important to him

This Work Is Personal To Me
by Daniel Suvor, Senior Director of Cabinet Affairs

Back in 2006, as my father was dealing with advanced dementia, our family faced a serious set of challenges. In addition to his health problems, we struggled with the lack of transparency in what his health insurance plan covered, and with substantial out-out-pocket costs. We were often left with unanticipated bills after appointments and medical procedures with little recourse.

At times it felt as though the system was set up against us. On several occasions, his insurance company interfered with his treatment, dictating important decisions about his care rather than his doctors. And there was little we could do about it. Helping my mom navigate the process proved to be a frustrating and expensive burden on us. Throughout it all, I would often wonder how many other families were in the same boat struggling with rising health care costs and the worst insurance industry abuses.

Not long after my dad passed away I first heard then Senator Obama speak about his own mother’s struggles with health insurance and the need to pass health reform. I knew that I had to be a part of making that change. Since joining the Obama Administration in 2009, I’ve worked hard to help implement the Affordable Care Act. It’s an honor to come to work every day at the White House to help make this landmark legislation a reality for millions of hard-working Americans who will benefit from the security and peace of mind of having health insurance.

What a brilliant (and mammoth) task putting this all together in one place, UT. Thank you! Seeing everything together like this shows us that Chuck and his idiot friends don’t have a clue what they’re talking about – these links and alliances didn’t happen overnight. There’s been considerable planning and plotting for this onslaught of information to be available to people from so many different sources. And that doesn’t even include the online and radio ads, despite the GOP cutting funding and closing off avenues for the Administration to solicit support. A lot of hard work – thank you for compiling this consolidated list.

      • September 25, 2013 at 5:15 pm

Oh, I agree. Mostly seniors who live in my area. With them it’ll mostly be telling them that nothing changes with them, and their supplemental programs will be cheaper if they buy off the exchange.

Even the affluent need protections offered in Obamacare. A friend of my mothers was diagnosed with cancer in her face, and before she sadly passed away, her family moved from their mansion to a two-bedroom apartment, once she maxed out her insurance for treatment. Everybody is protected with this law.

“29. Insurance companies don’t see ObamaCare as a threat. Sorry, GOP!”

Of course they don’t! What PBO did was what FDR did for capitalism: he saved insurance companies from their own dysfunction. And by adding 30 mil new customers, they’ll be raking it in WHILE PROVIDING BETTER SERVICE. The ones who don’t provide good service will be culled as people walk with their wallets; but it’s in the ins. co’s best interest to be fully vested in Obamacare.

The argument is made in relation to car insurance: “Well, I don’t HAVE to buy car insurance if I just decide to not own a car.”

But if you DO own a car, the price of admission is owning car insurance. And as the argument was made by Chief Justice Roberts during the ACA hearing, simply by being alive you will participate in the health system at some point in your life. Just because you’re healthy now doesn’t mean you get to be a scofflaw, just as having no accidents or tickets on your record means you can dispense with auto insurance. Auto and health insurance only keep costs down by having every stakeholder take a part in them; for auto insurance, it’s anyone who drives; for health insurance, it’s anyone who breathes.

      • 89 0388jojothecat
        September 25, 2013 at 6:54 pm

also, I would tell them that ” just because you don’t have to own a car, either have to ride a bus or walk somewhere or ride in a car to get somewhere…..the people who do drive need to be insured just in case they HIT YOU! At least if they have “Medical” in their full coverage auto insurance plan, that policy will pay for your medical bills or at least you can sue their auto insurance company for your medical bills. If they are unfortunate to get hit by a car and need to go to emergency, if they HAD insurance it would be covered…..without insurance that $5k or $10K policy might not cover all your medical costs then the rest of us have to pay for you which is what the ACA is trying to avoid” .

These people can’t think past their GOP talking points.

This is a tremendous bank of information that I’m going to do my best to share with as many people as I can. If every American knew this information, there would be lines around the block On October 1 with people waiting to sign up and the HHS site would be jammed. Your tweet that the best thing Republicans did in four years was call the American Health Care Act Obamacare, made me laugh. They thought calling it Obamacare would hurt the president, but Miss Karma had other ideas. Every day she’s interviewing drs. from some whackobird dr. group who are fighting against the ACA without informing viewers as to their identity. Today the co-founder of that group was only identified as a “cancer survivor”. It disgusts me that FOX has high ratings, keeping a large segment of our population in fear and uninformed. Keeping them dumb. Elisabeth is in her element—-she can smear and smear with no pushback at all, as she got on The View.

Reuters) – After weeks of haggling, the United States, Russia, France, China and Britain have agreed on the core of a U.N. Security Council resolution to rid Syria of its chemical weapons, three Western diplomats said on Wednesday, but Russia denied such an agreement and insisted work was “still going on.”

The development came after the foreign ministers of the five permanent members of the council met over lunch with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon earlier in the day, the diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Doesn’t it seem with this kind of support—-92% of the country—–that something can be done to try to lessen the gun violence in this country? It’s mind-boggling to me——-that a tiny percentage can prevent saner gun laws and a safer country.

UT, This an absolutely incredible resource for people still not sure what ACA (Obama Care) is all about. Thank you so much for sharing all these sources where people can go to learn/enroll. Your post today exposes the utter failure of U.S. media to serve the public. MSM should be ashamed! With all the money they have they can’t even do 1/100th of what you did to truthfully inform the American people about such monumental issue as health care reform.
