There sits a building, painted white
It glimmers in the bright sunlight
Built by strong, dark hands, without a choice
Built to house a leader, so we’d all have a voice

There sits a building, painted white
It shimmers in the soft twilight
Shadowing strong, dark hands taking their rest
Ghosts of our democracy, who gave it their best

There sits a building, painted white
It dims its lights, overnight
Built by slaves, who also served inside
Where none thought they should ever reside

There sits a building, painted white
We tip our hats to it, day and night
Built by slaves, who’d hang their heads to pray
A man with strong, dark hands would live there someday

There sits a building, painted white
I dare to say it is still quite the sight
For a still young country, yet to fully repent
But now shining light on why their knees were bent

Goooooooooooodddd Sunday Morning Chipsticks, Early Bird TODers….Everyone!!!!!

Chipsticks, a great review of the week in this morning’s Rise and Shine. For those of us who are always playing catch-up or had moments where we couldn’t get to the blog, this is an excellent way to see what we may have missed this week. Thanks a bunch for the weekly synopsis and the links to the details behind it. I see we have some honorary blog tyrants joining the ranks. 🙂

My son celebrated his last day as a teenager on yesterday and is celebrating his 20th today!

Everyone be inspired today….and try to lift the spirits of someone else. A smile is a good start. 😀 😀 😀

Good Morning Dudette! Thanks on behalf of my son for the birthday wish! It is great that his birthday is so close to someone so upbeat and uplifting as yourself.

I hope that your birthday cheer is ongoing as you continue to spread cheer to those around you — both physically and virtually. 😀

Good morning, TOD. Lead story in the Parade is interview with Tom Hanks and Capt. Phillips. The last question to both of them: What are you hoping people take away from the movie? HANKS: I would say that Rich puts this incredibly well: You can always try to do something. Keep moving forward. Keep trying stuff. PHILLIPS: Nothing is over until you choose to give up.

Now I ask y’all–Who does this remind you of? Amazing, isn’t it??!! PO’s speech last night…….and I read these quotes this morning!!!!!

Good and blessed day to all.

Ted Cruz and Jim DeMint Privately Admit That Republicans Won’t Defund Obamacare

    By: Jason Easley

    ——————————————

Once again, the Republican base has been scammed by their own elected officials. Republicans know that they can’t defund Obamacare. This is all a scheme to raise money, and get Republican voters fired up for the 2014 election. Cruz was also hoping to become the leader of a popular rebellion that would carry him to the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. Expect lots of tough talk about defunding Obamacare from Ted Cruz, but it’s all bulls**t, and he knows it.

The country is facing the prospect of a potential government shutdown, because Republicans want to fire up their base, and/or run for president in 2016.

So Ladyhawke, the racists haters deserve what they get, if they would put aside their hate they could see that all this talk from the Republicans about repealing or defunding Obamacare is B.S., but they can’t or refuse to see this, because their hate for this President have them so blind.

Signed, sealed, delivered. But isn’t it amazing and sad that we have to have a petition to remind a member of the news media that it is their JOB to report the truth, that our democracy depends on it?

Don’t know if this has already been posted…

“Is Your Congressman One Of The 13 Who Get Federal Farm Subsidies But Voted To Cut Food Stamps?”

    http://thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/is-your-congressman-one-of-the-13-who-get-federal-farm-subsidies-but-voted-to-cut-food-stamps/politics/2013/09/21/75493

    —-

Can you think of a better example of inhumane hypocrisy from our members of Congress than one that literally takes food out of the mouths of children but lines their own wallets with millions of your tax dollars? Back in July, you’ll remember, for the first time since 1973, House Republicans successfully voted to remove the Food Stamp bill from the Farm bill, while retaining and passing the Farm Subsidies bill…So, who are the rich gutting the food stamps bill? Member of Congress, of course.

This week, the Republican-led House voted to strip $40 billion in food stamps funding over a ten year period…They also voted to make, as a condition of receiving food stamps, most recipients work 20 hours a week — in an economy that has 7.3 percent unemployment…one [Rep. Stephen Fincher (R-TN)] even misusing the Bible to come up with their justification […“cited Jesus Christ’s call to care for ‘the least of these’ when describing the government’s need to assist the hungry,” … explained his support for the proposed cuts by quoting a very different Bible verse – 2 Thessalonians 3:10: ‘For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat.’”]

Back in July, when Congress stripped the food stamps bill from the farm subsidies bill, fourteen Congressmen who voted for that attack on the poor are themselves farmers. Yes, they are recipients of farm subsidies…And yesterday, thirteen of those fourteen voted to gut the food stamps bill…And yes, they are all Republicans.

    ===

The list of the 13 Republican Congress people who voted to fund their farms with millions of your tax dollars, and voted to cut $40 billion in food stamps is included in the article.

    LET THEM EAT CAKE

Cut Food Stamps, It’s What Jesus Would Do

    By JM Ashby

    —————————————

    This is where we’re at.

Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) on Friday responded to a constituent opposed to drastically cutting food stamps for the young, elderly and poor by citing a Biblical quote: “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.” […]

    • September 22, 2013 at 9:01 am

That quote from the Bible must be included in the GOP talking points…I see Rep. Stephen Fincher (R-TN) also used it as his justification to cut Food Stamp funding.

They don’t even have any originality – no doubt a staffer found that one and spread the word around. Horrible, hateful excuses for people.

      • September 22, 2013 at 9:31 am

Sw, It’s amusing how they always search out the most punitive bits of the Bible and leave out the overriding message of loving thy neighbor and feeding the poor. Plus heaven forbid they should read the Sermon on the Mount.

        • September 22, 2013 at 9:46 am

Selective application. As long as they can cite the Bible as their source, in THEIR minds they are maintaining their Christian values. HA!!!

        • 36 carolyn
          September 22, 2013 at 9:51 am

This kind of use of scripture drive me crazy. This is a part of a verse totally out of context. Paul had been visiting the church at Thessalonika, and as usual had been making his living making tents, as well as teaching and writing. A number of the elders of the church had decided that Christ was coming back soon, so they didn’t have to work, just sit and wait. Paul quickly disabused them of that idea

The leaders must work……does that sound familiar to us? Actually, if they want to apply this to anyone, it should be applied to Congress. They don’t work, they shouldn’t get paid and eat.
This is a total perversion of any gospel message. Christ said it is our responsibility to take care of those who are poor and in need of help.
Every representative in Oklahoma voted for the destruction of the SNAP program and for the defunding of the ACA. They will also use religious rationales for their votes. Sickening!!!!

Is this true and what is his Baseline?

    • September 22, 2013 at 9:06 am

If I remember right, we were told the ‘base’ had deserted the President before the last election, and then …… two terms.

    • September 22, 2013 at 9:15 am

      LOL @”KornHacky”

      🙂 🙂

No this is not true. It’s a new (well an old, regurgitated) meme the MSM keeps dredging up whenever they’ve got nothing. Boehner is about to cave on the debt ceiling issue and the MSM wants people looking elsewhere….

LOL ! If the President lost support from democrats his poll numbers would be in the 30’s or 20’s. Every poll shows that he maintains high ratings with Democrats and liberal democrats. The media can’t do anything else but attack the president because they hate him.

      • September 22, 2013 at 10:56 am

I cannot believe how anti-Obama these youngun’s get when they get a high profile MSNBC gig. In lockstep.

Saw this week (somewhere, don’t remember where) that PBO’s support among Dems was something like 90% — don’t remember (sigh) the exact percentage, but it was ridiculously high.

Now crickets from MSM on PBO’s masterful foreign policy moves. From the simple grace and good manners of a personal letter to Iran’s new President Hassan Rouhani to the wheels put in place after Putin was “elected” President, CRICKETS = egg on face of MSM.

dawna is wrong about “MSNBC.” Chuck is apparently political director for the mothership, NBC.

Since upChuck was promoted because of his work on the once-in-a-lifetime 2008 campaign, he believes that is his job — campaign reporting, with no consideration of what is happening to America, voters, Congress, the world.

Reposting this because what steamed me most about what upChuck said this week is calling our President a “lame duck.” If Dems win back Congress in 2014 and hold on to the Senate, President Obama may serve his entire 8 years without ever being a lame duck (that’s assuming that Dems hold on to Congress/Senate and a Dem – Martin O’Malley? – is elected President.

2016 is ridiculous speculation now, but just saying that upChuck is so, so wrong, and it’s shameful that he gets away with spewing his lies as “analysis.”

Also this; Congress is viewed less favorably than the person the President has been threatening all this month:

And here folks in a nutshell, is why the GOP feels empowered to continue its outrageous behavior. No accountability whatsoever…we’re at the brink of a possible gov’t shutdown thanks to GOP malfeasance, yet KornHACKY (as per Jovie) cannot find anything better to lead his show than “future of the Dem party?”

  21. September 22, 2013 at 9:40 am

It’s a beautiful Sunday morning, the autumnal equinox, my baby boy’s 41rst birthday is tomorrow and I’m going to try to go through a whole day without feeling angry and outraged. Ha! By the way I told my 93-old mother-in-law- that my 77-year old sister was getting married. Her response–“well, she’s still a young woman.” It’s all in perspective!

My heart goes out to Zizi and her family on the loss of her mentor.

    • 76 dotster3
      September 22, 2013 at 9:59 am

OK—-I’m feeling a little younger and perkier after your mother-in-law’s comment. (plus the proof that my 96 yr. old mom had a “date” last night with her 94 yr. old boyfriend. It was a popcorn date at his unit, but still…….romance) (and he told her she looked “cute” in the new wine colored cardigan I gave her for her bday—-compliments are good at any age)
The way I avoid anger and outrage on Sunday is to start the day with CBS Sunday Morning instead of any of the inane political talk fests. Always love that eclectic programming—–segments on that intriguing PBS Show Seven Up—-where the filmmaker has been following 7 British kids of different classes for 50 years to reveal how their lives have evolved, plus one on Cher, who looks the same as she did 40 some years ago when I ran to the record store to get the 45 “I Got You Babe”, plus one on croquet, a childhood fave, plus new movie reviews, plus one on the ukelele, plus, plus, plus—-now one on art accompanied by a symphony, next up Mark Twain. Always enjoy and learn something.

  22. September 22, 2013 at 10:02 am

Hey everyone.:D Just read this article on cnn that is supposed to explain the German elections. It does…in a way. of course there i, again, no hint at the fact that the terms “conservative”, “liberal” and “democratic” as part of “party” are not the same everywhere in the world, so i guess the average American won´t be much the wiser after this article at all…

Just as a reminder even though this is off topic: Our conservative is almost your liberal. American conservative is…oh, it just dropped off the right side of the German political spectrum. 😛

thanks for the explainer – our media is totally useless

      • September 22, 2013 at 10:36 am

Well, I think what´s lacking is the general knowledge that Europe is generally more liberal as a whole when it comes to politics. I had this fun conversation with a guy in Minnesota once (I was staying there as a teacher for a student exchange this year, my host family were very nice people, moderately republican but for reasons I found okay, there was no stupid Obama bashing), a friend of my host family who was genuinely interested in talking about the EU over dinner one day.

Him: Well my theory is that those EU countries that struggle right now mostly do so because they have been to fiscally liberal, would you agree? I mean, in contrast to your chancellor.

Me: It depends on your definition of “liberal”. If my chancellor were an American politician, her views would get her into what is the more “liberal” party here actually.

I felt a bit of amused pity because his face said that his political idea of Germany had just been flopped upside down 😀

One of the many things that caught my attention is the challenges that the responding law enforcement and medical personnel faced as they attempted to clear the scene & help the victims.

And why did Norm Ornstein seem so alone when he stated the obvious about the shutdown madness at The National Journal: “It is important to emphasize that this set of moves is simply unprecedented.” (Ornstein condemned the budget blackmail as a “contemptible” form of “sabotage.”)

The press’ continued timidity simply rewards Republicans by mainstreaming far-right behavior. There’s little doubt that the Republicans’ latest tortured plot to kill Obamacare represents a truly unique form of political folly. There’s nothing wrong with the press saying so.
