USA Today: Obama to speak on 5th anniversary of financial crisis
President Obama will deliver a speech Monday on the fifth anniversary of the event that helped elect him back in 2008: The financial crisis. Obama “will be joined on-stage and in the audience by people that have benefited from his economic recovery proposals over the last five years,” the White House said in a statement, “including small business owners, construction workers, homeowners, consumers and tax cut recipients.”
Obama will use the speech to kick off a week of events devoted to the economy and budget issues.
…. A Tuesday interview on the Spanish language television network Telemundo gives Obama a chance to talk about another major domestic issue, immigration. Budget issues are likely to dominate a Wednesday speech to the Business Roundtable. And Obama is likely to emphasize the auto bailout when he travels Friday to a Ford plant in the Kansas City area.

Your Morning Must-Read:
The People’s View: Ezra Klein’s Concern Trolling on Obama and the Federal Reserve
As soon as news hit the wires that Larry Summers has withdrawn his name from consideration for chair of the Federal Reserve, the media went on a full-spin mode, likely embarrassed that just Friday, they were pimping a Japanese newspaper report trumpeting Summers as the chosen one. Ezra Klein, who’d been part of the media build-up toward that ‘inevitability,’ if along with his opposition to it.
This is where a little Obama Derangement Syndrome seeped in. Ezra, along with his peers in the beltway media – dude, get out a little from you Post office and the MSNBC studios; it’ll do you some good – wasn’t just convinced that Summers would be a bad choice, but that Obama would pick him just to take pleasure in some hippie-punching, i.e. just to piss off establishment media liberals like Klein.

TPM: Biden: ‘The Tail Is Wagging The Dog’ In Today’s GOP
Vice President Joe Biden warned donors and activists of a fundamental shift in the Republican party at an Iowa fundraiser Sunday, calling today’s GOP a “different breed of cat” and taking a shot at the leadership of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).
“This is not your father’s Republican Party,” he told a crowd just before Sen. Tom Harkin’s (D) annual steak fry, according to a pool report. “We’re dealing with a different breed of cat as my uncle used to say. These guys aren’t bad. I’m not making moral judgments, but they have a fundamentally different view of America than we do – a fundamentally different view.”

Bob Cesca: The Goalpost for Success Was the Disarmament of Syria’s WMD, So the U.S. Won an Historic Victory
Saturday marked an historic event future generations will read about in books. Over the weekend, Russia and the United States reached an accord over the question of the Syrian government’s stockpiles of chemical weapons, most recently used against civilians late last month.
Whether the United States “won” depends entirely upon your definition of victory. Personally, I define victory in terms of the stated goal of the administration’s actions of the past three weeks: to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons to prevent another attack on Syrian civilians.

Michael Tomasky: The Right’s Sickening Syria Spin
If Obama persuaded Assad to step down and move to Siberia, the critics would still find something to whine about. Michael Tomasky deflates the arguments against the new arms deal.
I don’t know about you, but I’m not very interested in being lectured that Bashar al-Assad has no real intention of giving up his chemical weapons by the very same people who a decade ago were pushing this country into war — and having the deranged gall to call the rest of us unpatriotic — on the argument that there was no possible way a monster like Saddam Hussein had given up his chemical weapons. Barack Obama has been forced to spend about 70 percent of his presidential energies trying to repair crises foreign and domestic that these people created, and forced to do so against their iron opposition on all fronts; and now that he’s achieved a diplomatic breakthrough, they have the audacity to argue that he sold America out to Vladimir Putin? It’s staggering and sickening.

Steve Benen: The right struggles to hide its disappointment with diplomatic progress
A couple of years ago, after the United States and its allies used military force to help remove the Gadhafi’s government from Libya, Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham issued one of my favorite Republican press releases ever. The two senators, who had eagerly spent months touting U.S. military action in Libya, issued a joint statement commending the “British, French, and other allies, as well as our Arab partners, especially Qatar and the UAE.”
McCain and Graham eventually said Americans can be “proud of the role our country” played, but they nevertheless condemned the Obama administration’s “failure” to act in Libya the way the GOP senators preferred.
It was striking at the time for its bitterness – the United States had achieved its strategic goals, but instead of celebrating or applauding Obama’s success, Republicans pouted and whined.
It’s funny how history sometimes repeats itself….

Science Insider: U.S. Science Laureate Bill Hits Roadblock
Climate science skeptics have derailed a congressional proposal to create the honorary position of U.S. science laureate. But proponents haven’t abandoned the idea of giving someone a national platform to foster public understanding of science and serve as a role model.
….. the U.S. House of Representatives was expected to give swift approval to a bill introduced this spring by a bipartisan coalition of legislators in both the House and the Senate….
The bill was never discussed in any committee, however, and Larry Hart of the American Conservative Union hit the roof when he saw it on the House calendar for the next day. In a letter to other conservative organizations and every House member, Hart said the bill would give President Barack Obama the opportunity to appoint someone “who will share his view that science should serve political ends, on such issues as climate change and regulation of greenhouse gases.”….

For the record, I don’t think President Obama has any magical powers, or that he plays 11th dimensional chess, or that he bluffs, or that he’s merely lucky. What I do think is that he develops his North Star, takes the long view, and enters negotiations from the standpoint of finding both/and solutions (partnerships) rather than engage in the power games of either/or (dominance).

The Goalpost for Success Was the Disarmament of Syria’s WMD, So the U.S. Won a Historic Victory
By Bob Cesca
—————————-
So let’s stop playing this game. U.S. forces were deployed by the commander-in-chief to achieve one goal: to eliminate Assad’s chemical weapons — not to oust Assad; and not to fight on behalf of the rebels, many of whom hate us and will continue to hate us irrespective of what we might have done, or might not have done. I thought this was about getting the WMD. The administration, at least on paper, has achieved this goal without firing as so much as a water-balloon in the direction of Syria. Goldberg and other pessimists and administration opponents are free to spin away, but it doesn’t change the fact that the administration’s saber-rattling led to an eleventh-hour deal which will lead to the sole goalpost: the disarmament of Syria’s massive stockpiles of chemical weapons.

Excellent Ladyhawke, thank you – will add it to the post!!
Great summary by Cesca, LH, although you know this is too complicated for the media and right wing to understand. They wanted a “shoot ‘um up,” damn it, and the president didn’t give them one. How dare he pursue peace over war when they were salivating for blood, gore and things that go “kaboom” in the night.
You know I was watching CBS This Morning this morning and they had Frank Luntz up there running his mouth, trying to blame the President and both side for the dysfunction in Washington. I had to send a email to the Charlie, Gail, and Nora and tell them that Luntz is lying once again because the blame for no one being able to work together lies with the right wing radical Tea party Republicans. President Obama have reached out to Boehner and these Republicans over and over again, but they refuse to compromise with him. So Luntz is once again sitting before the public lying.

How Obama Derangement Syndrome is unlike that of Bush
By Liberal Librarian
————————————————
Obama Derangement Syndrome is different because it’s all-consuming. Nothing that he does can be credited. Everything he does must be deligitimized. He has to be shown as an empty suit, a buffoon, a clown, an incompetent, someone good at entertaining with speeches but completely out of his depth at governing. The more success he racks up, the greater the volume of this banshee wailing. The Republican Party and the Right in general have ceased standing for anything positive; they merely exist to oppose Obama in everything, no matter the damage it will do to the state. The Right’s only purpose is to conduct a scorched-earth campaign against the president.

The right struggles to hide its disappointment with diplomatic progress
By Steve Benen
——————————–
At this point, Republican complaints made a right turn at unpersuasive and landed at unseemly. Many on the right urged Obama to engage in saber-rattling against Syria, then complained when the president did just that. Many on the right urged Obama to take the issue to Congress, then complained when the president did that, too. Many on the right said they supported military intervention, right up until Obama agreed with them. Now Republicans seem to be complaining … just for the sake of complaining.
.
.
If the right could at least try to hide their disappointment, it might be easier to take their views on foreign policy seriously.

Good West Coast morning Chipsticks & TOD family.
Moooooooorning GGail!
Good Morning TOD! Crazy world we live in. I work a couple of blocks from the Navy Yard on M Street in DC. There is a active shooter in the area who has shot one person and injured another. A women was shoot right here at my building this morning during the Navy Yard crisis (we are not sure if it was related). Every cop in DC must be outside my building right now!
My building, The Department of Transportation and every other building in the area in on lock down. The shooter has not been caught. Pray they get this guy before he hurts/kills anyone else!
Oh Donna, that’s terrifying. Crazy, crazy world. Keep safe.
Donna, please take care of yourself. I hope they have adequate protection for your building and you can get home safely tonight. Bless you.
I can’t even imagine what you must be feeling right now. Please be safe.
PLEASE be safe!! Thinking of all of you.
Donna, I thought of you as soon as I heard the news. I’m so glad you’re safe. So far, no fatalities reported, but seven injured. According to the news, the wounded suspect has been taken into custody. Hats off to the authorities who were able to bring this to a conclusion without anyone being killed.
Oh, Donna, stay safe! we are sending positive energy to everyone involved. CBS News is saying that the shooter is neutralized.
This is a good commercial. Has nothing to do with people President Obama bashing. The commercial put me in a better mood. It also reminded me how glad I am President Obama passed healthcare reform.
What a touching wonderful commercial. I loved it.
Good Morning Chipsticks and TOD family, what a very moving commercial indeed. Life happens like this in so many ways, and we seldom see it in news. Personal comment. HZ
Beautiful! A true pay it forward story.
I hope the President select who he think is right for the job, if that is Yellen, fine. If it is not Yellen, fine. Forget Ezra and anyone else trying to make him choose who they want.
GM all TODvillians, from quite chilly Chicago. At least chilly compared to what we have been going through. Heck, I think it is cooler than it was on the Alaska cruise.
I have been having an ongoing dispute with PM Carpenter, who insists, over and over, that Putin saved PBO with his offer. No matter what, he is sticking with that story so I have decided not to try any more. The list of blog sites I visit is dwindling. Thank you for steering me to another one.
Quick comment on Iran. The canddiates for President have to be approved by the clerics and ultimately by the Ayatollah. In past elections, they would never have even allowed a moderate such as Rouhani to even run for the office. Now, not only did they allow it, but he won. And since then, we have seen numerous stories indicating that there might be progress with Iran on several fronts.
In my mind, I believe this is due to the leadership of PBO. Most of the world is accustomed, after Bush, with America’s cowboy diplomacy. PBO has shown himself to be the exact opposite. His role in Libya, and other areas of the Arab SDpring, including non-interefernce in Iran during their period of strong protests, other than some key but not hostile remarks, was watched closely in Iran. And once he was reelected, they saw an opportunity to make some changes.
This would never have happened if Romney had won. When he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, PBO said he felt undeserving, but at that same time, laid out what he felt the role of the US was when it came to world affairs. I have no doubt many around the world, specially in the ME were sketical, but he has shown he meant what he said. He has also shown he means business and does not totally shy away from the use of force.
What will happen in the next weeks, months and years is not yet determined, but we have seen a transformation begin. And I will continue in my support to work to amke sure the transformation continues.
Morning Japa! I really admire PM Carpenter, but he sure as hell puzzles me sometimes.
Very interesting on Iran, and you’re so right, there’s no way on earth these signs of progress would be appearing if there was a Republican in power, Romney (or whoever) would have been too busy banging the war drums at the prompting of McCain and Co.
Encouraging times.
PS Keep warm!
I generally like PM as well. It is just his unwillingness to even give PBO one smidgeon of credit on this, as well as his over the top harangues on the NSA issue.
Haven’t read him in a while, can’t remember what issue wore me out, is he Greenwald-ish on the NSA business?
He’s avoided it for a while, but he definitely was. Most of his readers, or at least those that comment, really gave him pushback.
Ah, didn’t know that Japa. I can tolerate some writers – like Charles Pierce – being strongly anti-NSA and all that, because that kind of thing has always been an issue for them, they’re genuine and passionate about it. But when others simply use it as a stick to beat PBO with, without acknowledging the need for surveillance, then …. bye.
If PM Carpenter can’t accept the simple fact that Putin saved Asaad with his offer, not PBO, then either he is “playing dumb” so he won’t have to apologize for his previous articles, or has a severe case of ODS. Asaad is Putin’s ally and as such Putin would act to protect his ally from U.S. military action. As I said previously, I think many in the MSM are spinning the Syrian situation into a defeat for PBO to prey on the mentally challenged or people who are not paying attention. The MSM has its desired anti-PBO narrative and will lie, spin and twist themselves into pretzels to maintain that narrative.

Fewer than half of all Republicans and Republican leaners (43%) want elected officials who oppose the law to do what they can to make it fail; 37% say they should try to make it work as well as possible. However, 64% of Tea Party Republicans oppose the law and want elected officials to do what they can to make it fail. By comparison, just 31% of Republicans and Republican leaners who do not agree with the Tea Party favor this approach.
There you have it. Fewer than one in four Americans supports efforts to try to make the law fail. Fewer than half of Republicans back such efforts; support for them is largely driven by Tea Party Republicans.
Wow, my 1st post since 5 something PM CT. Whew. Hello TOD!
I don’t know why.
Any explanation? Someone? Help!
Apparently the person who was found outside my building walked from the Navy Yard and collapsed after being shot. Now we are hearing reports of multiple shooters. We are still on lock down because they are not sure how many shooters there are. Geesh!!!!!!!!
This is terrfiying, Donna. You and everyone in your area, please stay safe.
My prayers are with you, Donna Dem4Obama.
The reports are conflicting. Some say there are 3 gunmen, others that the lone gunman is down. I simply hope that whoever is the perpetrator is taken into custody ASAP. Stay well and stay safe.

So OT: Anyone watch SNL? Cecily Strong, who will be the new news anchor and became a regular last season – I worked with her in a show when she was about 5 years old. I was the stage manager and assistant director for a production of Grapes of Wrath, and she played the youngest daughter. She was stunning and talented even at that young age.
During the run, we do ‘pick up rehearsals’ – a way to refresh before you start the next weekend’s run. Our Tom Joad had to miss one rehearsal and Cecily ‘played’ the male lead, delivering every one of his (many!) lines like a real pro!
I’m so very proud to see her succeed. Congratulations, Cecily!
I watch SNL and will watch for Cecily.

We are at our daughter’s in Chesapeake. Have it live on her computer. We lived in Fairfax for 17 years and our daughter worked for NewsChannel8. To this day, she is a major “news hound”, even moreso since we lived/worked in that area and know the area. Her husband has had to go to the Navy Yard for appts./meetings a few times. This is SO sad and maddening. WHY?????!!!!!!!!
Donna, please be as safe as you can. Praying for relief from this awful situation. (((( Loving prayers going forth for you and your building))))
May a force of light outshine this awful act of darkness. HZ
latest reports: https://twitter.com/washingtonpost/status/379614116404801536
CBS initially said 3 shooters – now they say 2 shooters, both are “down”
2 shooters? Oh my goodness. Prayers and thoughts to all those in the DC area, especially, family members, friends and TODers. Please stay save.
I am truly amazed how you all continue to live with the shootings – so now CBS have church leaders on – going to offer prayer meetings – yet I cannot but wonder why it is so hard to get rid of the guns. I send my thoughts for safe passage to all those caught up in the latest shooting – so wish there was a viable answer so you don’t have to keep living with such events.
Where are the church leaders offering prayer for cowards in Congress to have the guts to do the right thing and ban assault weapons, background checks, high capacity magazines, and prayer to fight the NRA.
Yes, let’s see—–prayers or gun control legislation——–which would be most effective in helping to stem all this gun violence? Geez, people—-get a brain.
I’m one who believe in prayer. Yes we need legislation. But I don’t doubt prayer either, it can’t hurt.
We will have to wait to be sure how many shooters there are and how many were shot and died. The media tends to run with the flow in hopes of being the first with the info, and many times they get things wrong. So patience is what we have to have and wait till someone comes out to speak, to let us know exactly what occur.
Looks like a second and possibly a third shooter at the Naval Yard. One heavily armed man in the main building is wounded and down. Per MSNBC, not much info on the latest news of a second gunman at a different location, nor will they report which building it is to avoid panic by those who may know people in the building.
Donna Dem and many of my #2’s friends work in that area of DC. Prayers for their safety and well being.
I heard one shooter was black, and no it wasn’t John King CNN reporting that.
I heard the shooter was wearing black. Way too much unknown at this point, including that some personnel there are allowed to carry weapons, it’s a naval base.
egad. teann trolling the witnesses for disaster porn is disgusting.

Until just enough of the 90% who favor background checks start voting in larger numbers and are as loud as the the 10%, change on this issue will continue to operate at a tortoise pace.
At any military base, my understanding is that Inside US, the troops are not allowed to carry live amos. Only the Military Police are allowed.
If this is true, then this explains how the gunmen were able to shoot people. At FH in TX 3 yrs or so ago and now in DC.
That is correct.
Thanks Japa21. I had heard that during the FH TX shootings.
Chips – holy mackerel what a humongous rise and shine. I’ll have to come back and check it out as I’m stoooopid busy. BUT Good Morning TOD! 😀
Excellent. RT’ed.
Prior to the news from Washington the CBS news online headline was BENGHAZI! Good that they always have something to fall back that is supported by the GOP.
Apparently another incident…..FBI and police are on the way to Bolling Air Force Base for possible gunfire there
Now, maybe not. Information flying in every direction.
CBS just confirmed NOTHING has happened at the Air Force Base – incorrect report (and they carried it).
What? At another site?
Then it seems more like a coordinated shootings?
At this moment, now they’re confirming there is no situation there.
2 shooters, 12 shots, 8 killed and 2 officers wounded and 4 hurt?
Oh my God.
We can reasonably hope that the majority of those people are ok. Communication systems must be heavily affected in the area.
I’m assuming that is true for the vast majority. However, it is still an indication of how horrible this situation is.
You’re right of course.
Hoping many of those are without power / communications so cannot contact family. There can also be multiple reports related to the same people.
I have a pretty responsible twitter feed: my ‘followees’ are all asking for caution, a speculation-free zone on the Navy Yard shooting. Trying to only post reputable sources, and still urging that people understand that the situation and information are fluid.
New post.
http://theobamadiary.com/2013/09/16/heads-up-pres-obama-speaks-on-the-economy/
Now we hear only one shooter, a man in his 50’s wearing black, heavily armed carrying 3 weapons, including an AR15 is dead.
