The United States and Russia have reached a deal on a framework for removing all of Syria’s chemical weapons by mid-2014, Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced in Geneva Saturday. Under the framework agreed after three days of negotiations in Geneva, Syria would declare all of its chemical weapons sites within seven days, allow inspectors on the ground and access to any site by November, and the removal of the weapons from Syria for destruction by mid-2014. .
“The world will now expect the Assad regime to live up to its public commitment,” Kerry told a packed news conference in the Intercontinental Hotel in Geneva Saturday, the Associated Press reports. “There can be no games, no room for avoidance, or anything less than full compliance by the Assad regime.” “We have committed to a standard that says, verify and verify,” Kerry said.
The framework would mandate the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to report on Syrian compliance or noncompliance with the agreed measures to the United Nations Security Council for possible sanctions, under Chapter 7 of the UN charter.
“In the event of non-compliance, including unauthorized transfer, or any use of chemical weapons by anyone in Syria, the UN Security Council should impose measures under Chapter VII of the UN Charter,” the framework states.
Watched the video. Thanks. That is a powerful statement by SOS Kerry, and no one should misunderstand exactly what’s happened, and what the plans are for the future. Those warships were a strong persuade, I believe.
PBO will be on State of the Union and This Week tomorrow….what perfect timing! He gets to tell the true story in his way. As we say, set the terms for the narrative.
Liked Kerry’s updating of Reagan’s saying trust but verify…..it is now, Verify and Verify!!!
I agree Carolyn. Hearing the statement makes it hard to misunderstand. SoS Kerry did a great job of explaining the terms of the negotiations agreement and it’s consequences.
Carolyn and GGail, our prayers for wisdom, timing for POB and his administration is the fruits of our labor of supporting him in our own ways, not matter what our private belief system may be while doing so; we all have the hearts and souls of doing the right thing by all human beings, and we know that our President does in all that he does. Timing and Wisdom are two powerful instruments when used wisely and faithfully, Gratefulness to our POTUS and our Sec. of State, John Kerry.
We are grateful, he will be able to tell the story just how it happened. Heads are exploding now. HZ
Following up on President Obama’s pledge in June to address climate change, the Environmental Protection Agency plans next week to propose the first-ever limits on greenhouse gas emissions from newly built power plants…..
While details of the E.P.A.’s proposal remain confidential, experts predict that it will include separate standards for carbon dioxide emissions from plants fired by natural gas and by coal. Plants using comparatively clean gas would be permitted to emit perhaps 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per megawatt-hour, a ceiling within easy reach using modern technologies.
Coal-fired plants, meanwhile, may be allowed to emit as many as 1,400 pounds per megawatt-hour. But coal is so heavily laden with carbon that meeting even that higher limit would require operators to scrub carbon dioxide from their emissions before they reach the smokestack, and then pump it into permanent storage underground.

Republicans, unlike democrats, are unable to work constructively when they are in the opposition. They behave like a tribe. They always look at democrats as the “enemy”. At the root is probably the vulnerability to fear. They can’t cooperate with political opponents because they feel threatened in their “identity” if they do.
I’ve read the work of Bob Altemeyer on the authoritarian personality a couple of years ago. It really opened my eyes. Conservatives have some qualities and can be of some help sometimes, but in the long term it’s the liberals and progressive people who make the world evolve towards openness, maturity, peace. People who are less authoritarian are the ones who are able to work constructively with others. ( Note: Altemeyer mentions in his work the concept of left-wing authoritarianism but doesn’t explore it very much; I bet that the “emoputins” fit the bill very well…)
In my opinion, many conservatives don’t demonstrate any capacity to go beyond stage 3. In contrast, Barack Obama is a “stage 5”. Like Mandela and Ghandi.
It is time to call out those who think that just saying you are anti-war in the face of massive atrocities is enough to make you pat your self on the back.
I think I am not alone when I suggest that the anti-war extreme left (and the UK MPs) would have served the Syrian Civilians better if they had chosen to strengthen PBO’s hand by demanding that assad not only be punished for using Chemical Weapons but also for the massive attacks using conventional weapons that have killed thousands and displaced millions.
I do not believe in war just to demonstrate a nation’s might but sometimes military intervention to protect civilians against brutality is the only thing dictators can grasp.
So the anit-war movement must be held accountable for the continued atrocities in Syria – unless they hit the street and loudly demand (with the same determination ) that civilians be protected from conventional weapons. They also need to point out the huge role putin, China & Iran have played in perpetuating mass slaughter
#Syria: imagine if US & world had stood with .@BarackObama & demanded cessation of attacks on civilians from CW AND conventional weapons
we can’t just let the anti-war movement just put their signs away – they need to support the efforts to end the atrocities on the ground by matching against putin, China and Iran who are the sugar-daddies of assad.
President’s golf partners today (at Joint Base Andrews course) include ESPN’s Kornheiser and Wilbon … before golf, President was briefed by Susan Rice; he also spoke w//SecState Kerry & UN Ambassador.
So glad to hear PBO is on the golf course. Just where he ought to be. Raising a few glasses of champagne in celebration of his Foreign Policy success—-that would be appropriate, too.
Hello TODers. I just sat down at the computer. All the tweets on the thread “a tweet or two” just got re-tweeted. They were so good I had to re-tweet almost all of them!
I just saw the ratings for CNN’s Crossfire. Just what they deserve, miserable. Stephanie Cutter is cool, but Newt, SE Cupp & Van Jones, couldn’t pay me.
NO Worries, Bobfr 🙂 I am currently projecting anger between the PGA (while Tiger plays his 3rd Round) and Alabama (who I hope, but doubt, while loose to Johnny Football) #WARDAMNEAGLE ——->we play Miss. St. on ESPN2 7 p.m. eastern.
And of course, come Monday, the Monday morning quarterbacking begins…… 🙄 can’t wait for the, “this has nothing to do with Obama….Putin and Kerry are the winners here.” Or, my very favorite, ” Obama was lucky…..his whole presidency has been about luck. Nothing to do with intelligence or skill. “
Given all the success of President Obama’s administration, luck plays such a minor role…especially given the deliberate obstruction with just about everything he does or wants to do. Not being able to concede that he is highly intelligent and an accomplished strategist does not mean that he’s not. President Obama’s continuous successes IN SPITE OF the constant roadblocks thrown in his path and the inability of his adversaries and critiques to predict what he is going to do only serves to emphasize how extremely capable he is.
same here – “blaming” PBO for his brilliance in addressing complex issues and of course “opening my browser” for me to start the politicking.
I get to Friday with a massive list of to-do things and swearing that I will refrain from the political commentary – them boom, PBO comes out with such an accomplishment that I
Just googled Miche and noticed a couple of articles stating that she’s getting criticism for her increasing water intake push…….seriously? This country is FUBAR. What criticism can you give a woman who’s encouraging you to drink something you need to survive? Then again, I shouldn’t be surprised. Criticism of Barack and Michelle Obama if they say rain falls from the sky? SNAFU.
I saw that on HLN this morning, these assholes were debating whether it was a good thing to drink water or not. Has this what this country has come to, are we now at the point where we start to question the benefits of drinking water?
Did not watch TV today at all – as usual. But I am wondering if any outlets carried a “breaking news” banner or interrupted their programming in order to report the progress on CW negotiations.
No doubt about it, bad news would have been reported 24/7 and with all kinds of graphics and stupid punditry.
it is very instructive if there silence (or just a quick mention) on a path that is more positive for PBO, the US and the world
It’s the T party in congress that has brought everything in America to a hold. Furthermore, if we don’t throw them out in 2014, nothing of significance will pass and more of this.
Is this really what people are voting for?
Posted this on end of last thread but on a day with very good news for the USA I wanted to make sure this bit of goodness is not overlooked.
President Obama has dispatched an envoy to Afghanistan specifically to plan and execute the drawdown there. Yay!
On cue here is Ezra Klein but BWD’s response is perfect.
The only thing I wish she had added was : maybe it would have been quicker and bigger had he had even more women in high office like your wife keeps saying!!!! Cause you know, let’s criticize on everything even if not true and nonsensical.
Klein has convinced himself that somehow PBO trapped himself then blundered his way out of it which is pretty ridiculous. His article goes to the core of the media’s problem. They can’t bring themselves to accept the fact The Black Guy knows what he’s doing.
From what I understand, it’s crickets today from the entire MSM who have twisted themselves into pretzels telling us how bad President Obama’s foreign policy is.
We could fill an entire post with their odious tweets this week (starting Monday, gleefully and scornfully “reporting” on Sec Kerry’s “gaffe”).
So now they’ve basically given up, chalking strategy and resolve for “luck.”
@Mama4Obama1 2009 Niall Feguson compared PBO to Felix Cat (both black!) @JamesFallows retort: compare Stephen Chu to Garfield (both yellow!)
I believe the constructive advances currently being made in re-creating this world from one of ‘war-for-profit’, to one of co-existence and brother/sisterhood, are due to the presence of PBO and SOS Kerry ~ both are intelligent, well-spoken, compassionate, cannot be bought, and hold clear, determined vision for moving us all into the 21st century. This is true leadership, they present a path inclusive for all to choose. God Bless them each and every day.
each time you want to judge the true essence of a person, look to what they do when the cameras are off or what they did when they were young and few knew their name
Chips you must have known that I needed another big laugh. McShame looks like the greyhound dog emblem. 🙂 The first laugh was when I laughed at what Don posted about HLN discussing the importance water. 🙂
Hi Chips, looks like LL and i were furiously working on our pieces right around the same time. Mine’s ready to go so please post it when you think the timing is right. Any formatting tweaks also appreciated. thanks
Good for him. In one hand, he has the carrots. In the other, the stick.
Great Afternoon TODville Community.

Good West Coast morning Chipsticks, UT & TOD family.
I saw this video on NBC, but couldn’t find it on WH. I think it’s important for everyone to see. It’s SoS Kerry on the Syria negotiations.

Here is the behind the scenes story about the last time Tony Kornheiser and Mike Wilbon played golf with President Obama…. some funny stuff 🙂
Pres. Obama’s America is awesome.
Best.President.Evah.
Simple answer, as you well know japa ….
A real ‘litmus test’ ….

Freed you from moderation Bob. So your tweets and comments are now showing.
Thank you very much UT. And, thank you for all your fantastic threads and tweets!!

Another way to look at it is through the lens of Kohlberg’s theory of moral development.

Holy smokes! This is a MUST READ. Perfectly describes Emoprogs.
Has Joan been right about anything lately?
Naaaaah.
and how would she know …these folks are just too much…they should know by now ..that it is NOT about them…
Since John Kerry is blowing it on Syria. Maybe we need SOS Joan Walsh to solve what John Kerry is blowing.

It ought to have a big picture of Joan Walsh with the word IDIOT across her face.
Best comment ever! 😆
I don’t think Boehner or McConnell will enjoy hearing what the President has to say on Monday ….

Ok, I’m starting to dislike PBO. For 3 straight weekends he’s made me break my “no politics on the weekend” rule. It’s all his fault that I did this:
same here – “blaming” PBO for his brilliance in addressing complex issues and of course “opening my browser” for me to start the politicking.
I get to Friday with a massive list of to-do things and swearing that I will refrain from the political commentary – them boom, PBO comes out with such an accomplishment that I

We can hope!

expected the nonsense to come the moment I saw FLOTUS promote drinking of water
He’s on this week on Sunday, FYI.

I have to apologize to Klein. Neil Irwin wrote the article.
Apologies aren’t necessary.
Klein and “no women in the WH” wife are a huge part of the beltway problem.
And even more so because they’re young, “representatives” of the Millennial generation (yeah, right)
As a reminder, posted yesterday:

Sad news from Smartypants:
I think it hurts even more when you’re not close. It did for the missus.
Yes indeed LL! It leaves you a whole lot of “what could have been” “what should have been”!
My Mom and I were not close but she died in my arms on Mother’s day!
Wow….
My condolences to Smartypants for the loss of her mother.
Deep Condolences for Smartypants on the loss of her mother. RIP
Sorry for your loss. I was not close to my Mom either, but it still leaves a hole.
Ok, I have an essay ready to go for whenever this weekend.
Excellent, LL – thank you! Zizi is still working on her post, so are you good to go now?
I’ll post now
Are you going to post it? Don’t want to interrupt your editing.
Fire ahead LL, was just adding a graphic at the top! Thank you again maestro.

Brilliant, thank you so much Zizi – two gems in one day, we are spoiled! Will post it next Zizi, can’t wait to read it – thank you again.
