The United States and Russia have reached a deal on a framework for removing all of Syria’s chemical weapons by mid-2014, Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced in Geneva Saturday. Under the framework agreed after three days of negotiations in Geneva, Syria would declare all of its chemical weapons sites within seven days, allow inspectors on the ground and access to any site by November, and the removal of the weapons from Syria for destruction by mid-2014. .

“The world will now expect the Assad regime to live up to its public commitment,” Kerry told a packed news conference in the Intercontinental Hotel in Geneva Saturday, the Associated Press reports. “There can be no games, no room for avoidance, or anything less than full compliance by the Assad regime.” “We have committed to a standard that says, verify and verify,” Kerry said.

The framework would mandate the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to report on Syrian compliance or noncompliance with the agreed measures to the United Nations Security Council for possible sanctions, under Chapter 7 of the UN charter.

“In the event of non-compliance, including unauthorized transfer, or any use of chemical weapons by anyone in Syria, the UN Security Council should impose measures under Chapter VII of the UN Charter,” the framework states.

Good West Coast morning Chipsticks, UT & TOD family.

I saw this video on NBC, but couldn’t find it on WH. I think it’s important for everyone to see. It’s SoS Kerry on the Syria negotiations.

Watched the video. Thanks. That is a powerful statement by SOS Kerry, and no one should misunderstand exactly what’s happened, and what the plans are for the future. Those warships were a strong persuade, I believe.
PBO will be on State of the Union and This Week tomorrow….what perfect timing! He gets to tell the true story in his way. As we say, set the terms for the narrative.
Liked Kerry’s updating of Reagan’s saying trust but verify…..it is now, Verify and Verify!!!

I agree Carolyn. Hearing the statement makes it hard to misunderstand. SoS Kerry did a great job of explaining the terms of the negotiations agreement and it’s consequences.

        Verify and Verify!

Carolyn and GGail, our prayers for wisdom, timing for POB and his administration is the fruits of our labor of supporting him in our own ways, not matter what our private belief system may be while doing so; we all have the hearts and souls of doing the right thing by all human beings, and we know that our President does in all that he does. Timing and Wisdom are two powerful instruments when used wisely and faithfully, Gratefulness to our POTUS and our Sec. of State, John Kerry.

We are grateful, he will be able to tell the story just how it happened. Heads are exploding now. HZ

Following up on President Obama’s pledge in June to address climate change, the Environmental Protection Agency plans next week to propose the first-ever limits on greenhouse gas emissions from newly built power plants…..

While details of the E.P.A.’s proposal remain confidential, experts predict that it will include separate standards for carbon dioxide emissions from plants fired by natural gas and by coal. Plants using comparatively clean gas would be permitted to emit perhaps 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per megawatt-hour, a ceiling within easy reach using modern technologies.

Coal-fired plants, meanwhile, may be allowed to emit as many as 1,400 pounds per megawatt-hour. But coal is so heavily laden with carbon that meeting even that higher limit would require operators to scrub carbon dioxide from their emissions before they reach the smokestack, and then pump it into permanent storage underground.

It is time to call out those who think that just saying you are anti-war in the face of massive atrocities is enough to make you pat your self on the back.

I think I am not alone when I suggest that the anti-war extreme left (and the UK MPs) would have served the Syrian Civilians better if they had chosen to strengthen PBO’s hand by demanding that assad not only be punished for using Chemical Weapons but also for the massive attacks using conventional weapons that have killed thousands and displaced millions.

I do not believe in war just to demonstrate a nation’s might but sometimes military intervention to protect civilians against brutality is the only thing dictators can grasp.

So the anit-war movement must be held accountable for the continued atrocities in Syria – unless they hit the street and loudly demand (with the same determination ) that civilians be protected from conventional weapons. They also need to point out the huge role putin, China & Iran have played in perpetuating mass slaughter

we can’t just let the anti-war movement just put their signs away – they need to support the efforts to end the atrocities on the ground by matching against putin, China and Iran who are the sugar-daddies of assad.

And of course, come Monday, the Monday morning quarterbacking begins…… 🙄 can’t wait for the, “this has nothing to do with Obama….Putin and Kerry are the winners here.” Or, my very favorite, ” Obama was lucky…..his whole presidency has been about luck. Nothing to do with intelligence or skill. “

    • September 14, 2013 at 2:52 pm

Given all the success of President Obama’s administration, luck plays such a minor role…especially given the deliberate obstruction with just about everything he does or wants to do. Not being able to concede that he is highly intelligent and an accomplished strategist does not mean that he’s not. President Obama’s continuous successes IN SPITE OF the constant roadblocks thrown in his path and the inability of his adversaries and critiques to predict what he is going to do only serves to emphasize how extremely capable he is.

Just googled Miche and noticed a couple of articles stating that she’s getting criticism for her increasing water intake push…….seriously? This country is FUBAR. What criticism can you give a woman who’s encouraging you to drink something you need to survive? Then again, I shouldn’t be surprised. Criticism of Barack and Michelle Obama if they say rain falls from the sky? SNAFU.

Did not watch TV today at all – as usual. But I am wondering if any outlets carried a “breaking news” banner or interrupted their programming in order to report the progress on CW negotiations.

No doubt about it, bad news would have been reported 24/7 and with all kinds of graphics and stupid punditry.

it is very instructive if there silence (or just a quick mention) on a path that is more positive for PBO, the US and the world

It’s the T party in congress that has brought everything in America to a hold. Furthermore, if we don’t throw them out in 2014, nothing of significance will pass and more of this.
Is this really what people are voting for?

Posted this on end of last thread but on a day with very good news for the USA I wanted to make sure this bit of goodness is not overlooked.
President Obama has dispatched an envoy to Afghanistan specifically to plan and execute the drawdown there. Yay!

On cue here is Ezra Klein but BWD’s response is perfect.
The only thing I wish she had added was : maybe it would have been quicker and bigger had he had even more women in high office like your wife keeps saying!!!! Cause you know, let’s criticize on everything even if not true and nonsensical.

    • September 14, 2013 at 3:46 pm

Klein has convinced himself that somehow PBO trapped himself then blundered his way out of it which is pretty ridiculous. His article goes to the core of the media’s problem. They can’t bring themselves to accept the fact The Black Guy knows what he’s doing.

    • September 14, 2013 at 3:59 pm

From what I understand, it’s crickets today from the entire MSM who have twisted themselves into pretzels telling us how bad President Obama’s foreign policy is.

We could fill an entire post with their odious tweets this week (starting Monday, gleefully and scornfully “reporting” on Sec Kerry’s “gaffe”).

So now they’ve basically given up, chalking strategy and resolve for “luck.”

      (Full disclosure, Japanese-American female here.)

I believe the constructive advances currently being made in re-creating this world from one of ‘war-for-profit’, to one of co-existence and brother/sisterhood, are due to the presence of PBO and SOS Kerry ~ both are intelligent, well-spoken, compassionate, cannot be bought, and hold clear, determined vision for moving us all into the 21st century. This is true leadership, they present a path inclusive for all to choose. God Bless them each and every day.
