@petesouza: President Obama greets family members at 9/11 Pentagon ceremony

6:30: The Vice President and Dr Jill Biden host a reception in honor of the 19th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act at the Naval Observatory

Steve Benen: Jobless claims plummet, but there’s a catch

Occasionally, when economic news is so great that you’re left thinking, “This can’t be right,” it’s wise to trust your instincts. The newly released figures from the Department of Labor on initial unemployment claims offer an example of this….

….take this one with a grain of salt.

Fareed Zakaria: Obama on the path to success in Syria

Whatever the twisted path, whether by design or accident, the Obama administration has ended up in a better place on Syria than looked possible even days ago….

…. Obama’s aim is solely to affirm an international norm. To this end, he already has achieved something important. He has mobilized world attention, and there is now a chance, albeit small, that he might get a process in place that monitors and even destroys Syrian chemical weapons. Almost certainly he has ensured that such weapons won’t be used again by the Assad regime. That’s more than he could have achieved through airstrikes — which are unlikely to have destroyed such weapons. (Bombing chemical weapons facilities could easily release toxins into the atmosphere.) This is a significant success.

…. The Obama administration is right to carefully and thoroughly pursue the diplomatic path — even though it will be difficult. While Syria and Russia are doing so as a way to avert an attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin might also be happy to see Assad’s weapons locked up or destroyed. In fact, this gambit might be a way for Russia to achieve its real goals in Syria: no regime change and no chemical weapons…..

Max Fisher: No, Obama did not just confer international legitimacy on Assad

…. there’s one argument against Obama’s approach that’s generating increasing attention but maybe shouldn’t be. The case goes like this: Obama has previously called on Assad to step down. But if he strikes this deal for the removal of Syria’s chemical weapons, he’ll be implicitly acknowledging Assad’s authority and thus conferring greater international legitimacy on the Syrian dictator, thus undermining his own effort to isolate Assad.

The problem with this argument is that Obama never actually sought to remove Assad from power against his will and has consistently acknowledged him as Syria’s head of state…

Dana Milbank: Conservatives use Sept. 11 to attack Obama

Here’s a hot new entry in the “Is nothing sacred?” category:

Conservatives are using Sept. 11, that most somber day for the nation, as yet another occasion to condemn President Obama.

Rather than join in the bipartisan ceremonies marking the 12th anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil, they rallied on the West Lawn of the Capitol, carrying signs that said “Impeach Obama” and, over a cartoon of the president trampling Uncle Sam, “Americans Don’t Support Terrorists or Their Minions.”

…. One might dismiss the partisan antics of those tarnishing the solemn anniversary. But some of the most prominent figures in the Republican Party joined in marring the memorials with Benghazi politics.

Steve Benen: Republican leaders vs. the GOP’s ‘Neanderthals’

House Republicans, perhaps tired after four days in the six weeks, will wrap their work week today around noon, leaving just five days in September in which the chamber will be in session. And as House members depart this afternoon, they’ll leave increasing odds of a government shutdown in their wake.

Part of the problem is simply a matter of logistics: the government will run out of money on Sept. 30, and House leaders haven’t left themselves much time to get their work done.

But just as important is the fact that Republican leaders have absolutely no idea how they intend to govern. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and the GOP leadership team thought they’d worked out a viable solution, which House Republicans rejected less than a day after it was introduced. Party officials are looking for someone to blame.

Obama Foodorama: First Lady Michelle Obama To Ask Everyone To “Drink Up” With More Water

Today, First Lady Michelle Obama will join the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) and actress Eva Longoria in Watertown, Wisconsin to announce PHA’s new effort to encourage everyone to drink more water, an easy choice to improve health and well-being every day. The effort brings together more than a dozen organizations committed to encouraging everyone to drink more water more often. According to the CDC, approximately one fourth of children do not drink any water on a given day. This new effort will remind people that drinking more water helps you have more energy to do more, longer and with better focus.

Assad to Russian TV: Syria Giving up Chemical Weapons Because of Russian Offer, Not US Threats

LMAO!! After lying to PBS about even using chemical weapons, would he ever admit on public Russian TV? Please…we know the TRUTH, so his attribution is irrelevant.

An offer made by Russia after talks with the US and under the threat of force. Yeah, right.

      • September 12, 2013 at 9:43 am

Japa, this is at the level of adolescent chest-puffing on the part of Assad. Teenagers will never admit that anyone stronger and more powerful ‘made them do it,’ so they’ll conjure up the most convoluted, self-justifying reasons for going what they should have done to begin with. ‘The Only Adult’ on the International Stage has to deal with a lot of children with unruly temperaments as well as evil intent. But like any mature adult, he’ll happily concede the self-justification as long as the job gets done.

          September 12, 2013 at 9:46 am

Actually, this is exactly why Kerry made his “off the cuff” comment, so that Putin could make his offer and it didn’t seem like Assad was giving in to US demands.

So I’ve been observing from the sidelines the whole kerfuffle re Syria. Then I hear about Putin’s op-ed in the NY Times and all the pundits singing his praises, while salivating over “Obama’s Syria Stumbles” a la Joe Klein.

Well to the smart folks hailing Putin as a fresh foreign policy savior, I have a one-word reminder for them.

Remember how that all went down?

    Remember that 118 men died?

Remember how 23 of them might have lived, had Putin not refused international help from the Americans, Norwegians, the Dutch and the British?

Remember how one of the nearby subs reported that they were picking up the sound of tapping – men tapping, begging to be rescued, but Putin refused because whatever the Kursk was doing in the first place, he didn’t want Russian secrets getting out?

Remember how the parents of the men were livid at this decision?

Remember Putin’s stoic, unfeeling attitude during the whole incident?

Remember how Putin only allowed international access only after it was determined that no one could have survived after that length of time? The tapping had stopped anyway.

Remember how Putin and his government accused the US of sinking the Kursk, when this was obviously not true and an investigation would show that it was a hydrogen peroxide leak that caused the explosion?

Remember it was after a year – one year – that the Dutch – not Putin and his government – but the Dutch that recovered the wreckage and all of the bodies still in the Kursk? In other words, Putin couldn’t be bothered to recover the bodies – 118 – of his own Russian sailors and officers.

All this went down as recently as 13 years ago.

And now the NY Times and whoever else is trying to force Putin down my throat as the bastion of humanity? Well let’s give him the Nobel Peace Prize then. And perhaps the people who are savoring Putin’s pontifications on how the US ought to run its foreign policy should probably lobby for Congress to issue an open apology to that nice Mr. Castro who has been treated so badly all this time, when he was only trying to do what was best for his country.

Just needed to get that off my chest.

Other than that, hope everyone here has a great day.

Great, great roundup, Chips. The column by Anna Neistat should be required reading for anyone snookered by the Putin op-ed. Maybe Ketchum could atone for his anti-American activities by getting Neistat in the New York Times. The NYT printed the insane, now let’s have a voice from the real world. People who have been slogging in the field of international justice probably find all the Putin worship incomprehensible. The US media knows no history, has no reference to reality and goes with whatever bias or bit of ignorance catches their fancy on a given day. When your greatest motivation is the absolute hatred of the president, you are a candidate for therapy, not opinion giving.

      September 12, 2013 at 9:48 am

JG…yes, the media need to take a good, solid course in Russian history. I’m not an expert, but I’ve taken several Russian history courses…Putin is the re-incarnation of the Czars and the Soviet leaders. Strong man, use of the secret police…used to be the Okrana under the Czars, then the KGB, now still the secret police., forget the initials, but same organization.
Human rights are not the Russian heritage. Putin came out of the cold war….that is still his thinking.
U.S. media needs to grow up and educate themselves….Yes, Joe Klein, that means you!!! Your ignorance is showing.

      • September 12, 2013 at 9:58 am

Carolyn, next we’ll be hearing that Stalin was really just a kindly uncle and all the ruthless deaths under his dictatorship were the product of western imagination. The czars will be rehabilitated and all of Russian history will be cast in a rosy glow of praise for Mother Russia, the misunderstood giant on the international shame. Up will be down and east will be west just as long as absolutely NO credit is given to President Obama. That is the unshakable first rule of the US media.

    Bonus Quote of the Day

    — Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), quoted by Mother Jones, on the U.S. Senate he would like.

    • September 12, 2013 at 10:06 am

Actually DF, it’s fun to see the way that Cruz is turning himself into a caricature. His father was Cuban, which makes him a Latino whether he wants to acknowledge that or not. Yet he is trying mightily to become a member of the exclusive white male club. He has somehow got it into his warped mind that he can ride the old white male train to national prominence and the White House, not realizing that those elite while males will still regard him as a person of color and a lesser person than themselves. Anyone in 2013 who thinks a path to political victory lies in casting aside AAs, Latinos, Women, Asians, naturalized Americans of all ethnic groups, the young, and enlightened white males is living in a fantasy world of their own making. All the voter suppression in the world won’t save this sorry excuse for a human being.

Great R&S Chips. First Lady Michelle Obama will also make a video appearance on The View today to discuss the #DrinkH20 project. Others are also participating so look out for the videos.

Michelle Obama is enlisting the help of Jay Leno, David Letterman, Jimmy Fallon and other celebrities to encourage people to drink more water. All three nighttime talk show hosts will drink water throughout their programs on Thursday to highlight the first lady’s anti-obesity “Let’s Move” initiative, which is now encouraging people to drink water instead of higher-calorie sodas and energy drinks. Katie Couric and the hosts of the “Today” show, “Good Morning America,” “The View,” and “Live with Kelly and Michael” will also be guzzling H2O in solidarity on Thursday. Michelle Obama will hold a rally Thursday in Watertown, Wis., to draw further attention to the cause. Helping out will be actress Eva Longoria, a prominent Obama supporter.

Water has many health benefits: It combats dehydration, which is one of the main causes of headaches; and it leads to healthier organs and better hair and skin.Yet a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier this year found that 43 percent of adults drank less than four cups of water a day (half of the recommended eight cups), including 36 percent who drank one to three cups and 7 percent who drank none. Obama’s campaign is designed to turn those numbers around by touting the benefits of drinking water.

More news of First Lady Michelle Obama’s #DrinkH20 project.

So instead of Mrs. Obama and her partners–including high-profile supporters from Hollywood–telling Americans what not to drink, such as soda and other sugary beverages–they will flood the nation with a carefully crafted message that Kass said will be “positive” and “fun.” “Tsunami” is not an overstatement: The Drink Up logo and the slogan, “You are what you drink, and when you drink water, you Drink Up,” will be everywhere beginning today, on TV, on radio, in print, and on the internet. Actress Eva Longoria will join Mrs. Obama in Watertown, but the “Desperate Housewives” star–who also promotes Pepsi soda brands–is just one surfer on Mrs. Obama’s salt-free wave.

Today new PSAs starring Mrs. Obama, in English and Spanish, will be featured on a raft of TV shows, with the hosts drinking water on air to pitch her point. Outings are scheduled for the Today show, Good Morning America, The View, LIVE with Kelly and Michael, Katie, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the Late Show with David Letterman, Nuevo Dia, and Despierta America. Rachael Ray, The Doctors and The Biggest Loser will also feature Drink Up in the days ahead. The First Lady’s celebrity supporters have also agreed to use the campaign’s hashtag, #DrinkH20, across Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, said Lawrence Soler, President and CEO of Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), the foundation created to monitor the commitments to Let’s Move!. The celebs have “combined followings of 100 million,” Soler said, and their efforts will translate to “one billion media impressions.” The campaign’s dedicated website, youarewhatyoudrink.org, launched this morning at 6:00 AM.

Good Day, my dear Chips and TOD family. I love our First Lady and this beautiful effort to bring our attention to the importance of drinking more water. Great. ‘

Also, theo67, there is a nice idea that I would like to share with my TOD family about using different fruits and vegetables to enhance the look and taste of partaking of this jewel, our water. I always serve my guest with lovely water glasses with slices of cucumber, lemon, lime, orange with lots of good crushed ice.

Line your glass with a little crush ice to hold the fruit/vegetable slices in place around the glass.
Place green pieces then alternate with orange slices, then lime, lemon, cucumber, etc. always make sure that you have enough crush ice to hold the pieces in place gradually fill the glass with water. Make a large pitcher of the same to use to refresh the guests glasses. I saw this at a very luxury spa in Old Pasadena, and have use it since for all of my guest and myself It gives a lovely appearance and it makes you want to drink more water, especially as you pass by the counter and see the pitcher looking so lovely.. Try it, TOD family. You will love the beauty and love you clear, and youthful skin as well. H2o with fruit and vegetable slices to go. Yes, TOD. H2o to go. HZ

      GM Amk,

I’ve read the NYT article and took it for what it was: a propaganda from a very disingenuous Putin who should not be lecturing anyone. But what made me perplexed were the comments. What a sad state of affair! I can just imagine Putin and his crew reading those comments to reach the conclusion of how naïve and simply foolish many Americans are. My conclusion is that most of those who are applauding Putin are republicans and among those who have continuously disrespected POTUS. To really think that suddenly Putin was the voice of reason in the Syrian conflict lets me know that some people really live under some rocks somewhere in the US. Don’t they know who this guy is? If he really wanted peace in Syria, why did he wait for PBO to threaten the use of military force to offer his proposal? He and Assad are like Siamese twins. Putin could have pressured Assad to use a bit of temperance. But the way Putin is described in the US media is a shame.

    From Plumline:

U.N. REPORT COULD SHIFT SYRIA DEBATE: The Cable scoops: that the forthcoming report by United Nations inspectors will implicate the Assad regime in the gas attacks:
The inspection team…will not directly accuse the Syrian regime of gassing its own people, according to three U.N.-based diplomats familiar with the investigation. But it will provide a strong circumstantial case — based on an examination of spent rocket casings, ammunition, and laboratory tests of soil, blood, and urine samples — that points strongly in the direction of Syrian government culpability.
The public and most Members of Congress already accept Assad’s guilt, and there may never even be a vote, but the report will give the administration something new with which to press its case with wavering lawmakers.

Yes, you are right, I guess I just “considered the source” before and looked at it as stupid blowhards, treasonous, yes, but dumb treason…this time it’s pushed my buttons and elevated their “caca” to serious stuff….beyond dumb…cold, calculated, treason based on nothing but racism.

Thank you! Love all those on Twitter from the administration with the “44” following their Twitter name. Wish there were a big old list of “44”-ers, so I could follow them all.

…………………[Take a trip over to Smartypants to see the photo. 😉 ]

The photo above was taken in March 2011 when Syrians joined in peaceful protests as part of the movement we now call the Arab Spring. They were protesting the brutal dictatorship of Assad. That would have been a moment for Putin’s “champion of democracy” to step up. But instead, Assad sent the Syrian Army to quell the uprising with soldiers firing on demonstrators all over the country – thus sparking a civil war.
