      I loved that series.

      • September 8, 2013 at 8:47 pm

I’ll never forget being nine years old, sitting on the floor in front of the black and white motorola and: WOW. It was so ahead of it’s time back then. Sure, now it looks silly and campy to a lot of folks compared to modern media. They understandably have no idea how NEW it was. And as observed above, Spock was a singularly unique and spellbindng character (as he would say “Fascinating”.) When I started to share the DVD set with my kid he LOVED IT at 6-7………..now that he’s 12 he has a hard time getting past the production and special effects capabilities of the time.

I loved the show’s hopeful vision of the future for our species and the strong female characters, especially my idol, Uhura. It was so wonderful for me to see myself in her as a young, black kid growing up in the sixties. And I had a huge crush on Mr. Spock.

When I was 14 at the end of the school year, we lived in Indianapolis for 3 months while waiting to be posted in Germany. Star Trek came on 3 different channels, 3 times a day. I was in heaven and watched all 3 times everday. πŸ™‚

Also I’m still amazed when I look now at how much real-life technology we use now that was inspired by Star Trek! To say it was ahead of it’s time is an understatement. That show has shaped so much of my life and, IMHO, our society in general.

btw, from my limited perspective it’s likely President Obama will have more than a little to say about intercepted communications and debriefing of defectors as part of his lesson plan Tuesday evening.

Horrifying barely covers this. Worse than I would have guessed.
I cannot wait to hear from the President Tuesday night.

      • September 8, 2013 at 9:17 pm

Yes it is horrifying Vicki and for those of us who have been following Syria closely since the beginning we’ve known Assad would do all that he has done if the international community did not intervene.

President Obama has been exceedingly diligent in striving to have the international community, primarily through the UN, step up to its responsibility. Enough time has past to make it clear that Russia and China are willing enablers of Assad and will not allow the UNSC to act responsibly. What I don’t think either of them anticipated was 21 August 2013.

Without any doubt, the calculus changed on 21 August 2013 when Assad escalated to mass murder using chemical weapons. Now every signatory to the 1925 Geneva Protocol and the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention have no where to hide.

Not enforcing the law is de facto repeal of the law.

The implications of destroying almost 100 years of international law that holds the use of chemical (and biological) weapons in war, and in any other situation, illegal is beyond irresponsible, it would enable any mass murderer to practice their art. That must not happen.

        September 8, 2013 at 9:25 pm

I’m pretty sure that’s EXACTLY the way that the President has been framing this! The only people NOT framing it this way is the MSM…with talk of WAR. WTH!

      • September 8, 2013 at 9:27 pm

This is one of those things that make you want to grind your teeth, Arapaho. The president, SOS Kerry, Hagel and anyone from the administration you can name has called this a narrowly targeted strike from day one. I heard it, you heard it and everyone with even minimally good hearing (and mine’s not great) heard it. It was only the media itself and a few deliberately deceitful Republicans who used the term ‘war.’ If a so-called journalist cannot hear, or think or write coherently, why is he/she paid to communicate? This is willful incompetence of the highest order or downright malice.

By the way, I heard the Swedes had finally solved the he/she dilemma of referring to a person whose sex is not known. They’ve come up with the generalized pronoun “hen” to refer to a male or female. Very enlightened. It would probably take another century for that to happen in the English language.

Hey, everyone! I’ve been in and out, have a little kitty in some sort of relapse, and it’s been a very hard day. I know it doesn’t compare to what is happening on a reality scale, but it is still close to home and we cannot bear to see them struggle. So, candles are always a good way to keep the Light flowing, for all the reasons we must! Big hugs all around. http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=PBO

Here’s the best explanation I’ve seen as to what’s motivating @maddow (who, according to the @nymag article that’s behind a paywall is now Phil Griffin’s “quarterback.”):

What a treat to be able to focus our diverse eyes on the solo mission of proudly supporting the best POTUS ever, PBO, his Family and the many people who help him push on so diligently & with such grace & dignity!

Can’t imagine how many potential advertisers I would have offended by now with may crazy thoughts & strong opinions.

A Right-Wing Media Star Is Born: Vladimir Putin

    By Eric Boehlert

Casting a wide net and always willing to promote whoever will mount attacks against President Obama, conservative commentators have recently reached out all the way to Moscow to embrace their latest champion, Russian president Vladimir Putin. The more he criticizes Obama for wanting to mount military strikes against the Syrian government for gassing its own citizens, the more Putin’s comments are cheered by conservatives here.
    Putin, the right wing’s anti-Obama.

The Putin admiration has been growing for weeks now. In August, when the leader helped cracked down on gays in Russia by banning the positive depiction of homosexuality as well as the adoption of Russian children by any foreign couples from countries with marriage equality, the American conservative media cheered the former KGB agent as a righteous champion.

    • September 8, 2013 at 9:54 pm

So, LH, the right wing’s insane hatred of the president has pushed them so far right they’ve become communist lovers. Remember when communists were lefties? Remember Joe McCarthy? The irony is just too sweet.

You know it used to be that you could fight like cats and dogs, but when it came to our country, we all were on the same side. But these conservative Republicans is something else. They don’t just dislike President Obama policies, they hate the man. These conservatives are a bunch of sick racists bastards. And if they love, and trust Putin that much move on over to Russia. This country would be a hell of alot better without them.

  28. September 8, 2013 at 9:41 pm

It’s just this ridiculous and we must hold them forever accountable for their shared responsibility for Assad’s crimes against humanity ….
