Syracuse.com: At Tully Junior/Senior High in Tully, N.Y., the president talked to the kids about the end of summer vacation and his plans to help make college more affordable.
…. The girls chattered, squealed and cheered throughout the visit, especially when the president posed with the Black Knights for a photo.
…. The president talked to the girls’ team first, then the boys. He tried to start a little trouble: “Can you guys beat the boys?” Obama asked the girls, and one said. “Oh definitely.”
…. Obama singled out one girl: “You don’t look like you’re in junior high school,” he said to a young girl, Julia, who is 9. Meeting the president, she had said earlier today, was on her bucket list. “Here’s a general rule,” Obama said. “When you’re 9, you don’t need a bucket list,” and the girls laughed. “When you get to be 52, then you might want to draw one up.” With the boys, Obama took a soft pass from one of the players, caught up to it and played with the ball for a couple of seconds (to oohs) before passing it back to the team.

Yeah
And not only was Wayne applauding the President’s skills, he was wishing he had 1/2 the charisma the President has.
😯
C/mon now. That isn’t a knock on Rooney, it was a complement of PBO.
In your dreams Chips. In your dreams.
Great question john miller.
For Rightwingers, him being Black is more than enough.
There is only one way England can pass as much as Spain… By putting Wayne Rooney on Mastermind.

I’m not late, just slow… Like my iPad for some reason today… Anyway, the math wizards here will already know this, PBO left a tip of $46.64, what a great guy! That is nearly half the charges for the lunch, and nothing in view of the PRICELESS EXPERIENCE and forever delight of having met him!
I love my President. That is all.
I love him too.
I love him three!
And I love him four-evermore! 😉 (who could resist that?)

The Sisters of Civil Rights Get Their Due
By Elizabeth Dias @elizabethjdias
Aug. 23, 20130
Many have never heard the names of all the Civil Rights Movement’s heroes. History remembers the “Big Six”—Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lewis, James Farmer, A. Philip Randolph, Roy Wilkins, and Whitney Young. But behind the scenes is an extensive list of names that often gets overlooked: women.
That’s why the Black Women’s Roundtable, an initiative of The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, led a conference on Thursday to honor the women of the 1963 March on Washington. “We know our brothers did great work 50 years ago,” Melanie Campbell, NCBCP president and conference convener, told some three hundred women gathered at the Capitol Hill Hyatt Regency. “But we know, in Melanie’s opinion, our sisters did even greater work.”
Panelists from a range of women’s organizations shared stories of the African-American women behind many of the movement’s most pivotal moments. Martin Luther King, Jr. and fellow civil rights leader Andrew Young, for example, only met because their wives, Coretta Scott and Jean Childs, knew one another, and that connection eventually inspired their Birmingham Campaign. “Women were the backbone of the civil rights movement during a time when that was more the acceptable role,” says Ingrid Saunders Jones, chair of the National Council of Negro Women and former senior vice president at Coca-Cola Company. “When women convene powerful things happen.”
The most famous unsung heroine, most panelists agreed, was Dorothy Irene Height. President Obama called her “the godmother of the civil rights movement” and gave her a place of honor on the platform at his first inauguration. Height fought the “slave markets” of black women in New York City who worked as day laborers for 15 cents an hour. She was the president of Delta Sigma Theta, an international sorority of black women, and brought hundreds of Deltas to the March on Washington. Thelma Daley, a Delta who came to the March and who now chairs the Women in the NAACP, told the women at the conference that she and her fellow Deltas marched under the impression they would get to hear Height speak. “We didn’t know the dynamics then, we didn’t know the inner workings,” Daley remembered. “She was too much of a diplomat to tell the group ahead of time [that only men would speak]…but we looked at her stature on the stage, with great dignity, with great power.”

Rikyrah, there’s a great book that came out just last year called “Hands on the Freedom Plow: Personal Accounts by the Women in SNCC.” The stories of these hard working women are riveting. That came from many states and many backgrounds and endured hardships, fears and triumphs together. Since they were totally unsung heroes, they wanted to tell their stories while they still could. It’s worth a read.
I love my President too! Our President and the lovely Michelle LOVE life! They really do! I mean to grab the soccer ball and play with it … his inner child is firmly in place and that is so healthy …. it is just so healthy! For him …. and for us to see it. He makes me want to go out and run and skip and hop! Love him!
Allison, that is really one wild show. Since I don’t speak Spanish, I have no idea what anyone is saying, but they all
seem to have a great time.
Oh yes, Sabado Gigante is a mixture of music and raunchesness.
This story speaks for itself
ANd if you told this stupid mofo that this was Obamacare, I’d bet he’d turn it down.
SEE, I told you…I have no pity for stupid mofos willing to cling to Whiteness like this.

Obamacare’s unwitting fans
By Steve Benen

This anecdote, reported by Jason Cherkis after attending an event in Louisville, speaks to a fascinating larger phenomenon.
Yep, that guy in Kentucky has been told so many times to hate Obamacare that he genuinely believes it’s awful…..

She should have told him the truth: It’s not Obamacare, it’s Affordable Care Act. That should satisfy any lemmings.
She should have told him that it was Obamacare. People need to hear the truth.
Hey our left handed president is right footed!
IMPEACHMENT? BRING IT ON
By Charles P. Pierce
——————————-
Bring it on.
This president isn’t going to make it easier on you. There isn’t going to be a personal scandal that you can gin up this time. I think you should proceed to hearings — all of you fine old white people — wherein you try to remove from office the first African American president in history for the high crimes of getting a law passed that you don’t like. I think you should recall how everything except the Lewinsky stuff fell apart on Ken Starr, and then trot out the IRS and Benghazi, Benghazi! BENGHAZI! again on national television. I think this is a monumental political winner for your party. I think this may just lock things up for you the next 20 years. Go ahead. Give your slavering base what it really wants.
.
.
This should be the final put-up-or-shut-up moment. Either the party distances itself from this kind of loose talk, or it owns this kind of loose talk. This isn’t something that ought to be thrown out there just to rev up the base for the midterms. As we learned in 1998, this kind of thing takes on a life of its own, and it’s difficult to turn off once you engage it. Either the party reins in its base, and the people playing so loudly to it, like Tom Coburn, or it embraces the base as the ideological heart of the party. You can’t middle this stuff any more. The stakes are too high.

Excellent, the one and only Charles, thank you LadyHawke!
Grade A, 100% Choice BEEF, Baby!!!
And shame on MSNBC for giving this crap any oxygen. Just like they tried to elevate Greenwald/Guardian/Snowden, they are backing up the wrong tree and are on the wrong side of history.
i remember chris matthews/msnbc being one of if not the first to bring the birth cert nonsense to the national stage. such a liberal network, huh?
When it comes to advancing the GOP’s BS narratives, MSNBC is actually among the worst offenders.
LOVE!!!
How sweet. I’m always amazed at how young Dr. King was. Hard to believe he was only 40 when he passed (especially now that I am on the other side of 40).
Actually, he not yet 40! He was just 39 and 3months.
Meant to say he WAS not yet 40.
Time to March on Washington—Again
By Ari Berman
——————————————
“The main themes will be voting rights, state laws like ‘stand your ground’ or local laws like stop-and-frisk, and the whole question of jobs and union-busting,” says the Rev. Al Sharpton of the National Action Network, who convened the march along with Martin Luther King III. “Fifty years after the original march for jobs and justice, we have a new version of the same issue.”

Welcome to the 21st century Ireland. You still need to do more.
The first legal abortion in an Irish hospital has been carried out in Dublin, the Irish Times confirmed on Friday. It represents the first pregnancy termination under Ireland’s historic new abortion law, which slightly relaxed the country’s total ban to allow for legal abortions in cases when it’s necessary to preserve a woman’s life.
Before Ireland’s prime minister approved the new law in July, the country’s abortion laws had not been updated since 1867. Now, there are 25 Irish hospitals that are authorized to perform legal abortions in life-threatening cases without worrying about legal repercussions.
It’s progress, but:
“…. there are 25 Irish hospitals that are authorized to perform legal abortions in life-threatening cases without worrying about legal repercussions.”
The problem is that many of those hospitals are staffed by very conservative Catholic doctors, some even with priests on their Boards, so I still worry about the safety of women (like Savita) who need abortions when their doctors have that ideology. There are no abortion clinics to go to.
We’ll see, but yep, this is progress.
I’m an oldie but goodie, but I distinctly (because it was a shocker to me at the time) remember hearing from the nun who taught Religion class to us in 12th grade in a Catholic high school (in 1964) that if it were a matter of saving an unborn child or saving the mother’s life, the mother must first save her own life because we are all first responsible for our own bodies, as a gift from God.
That was a different time and it was the first time we had probably ever heard that we high school girls had any kind of choice, but I clearly remember it, and it was taught as a matter of having a good moral conscience. Big disconnect to what’s being “taught” now.
That was the thing with so many of the nuns from that generation Jacqueline, they had some empathy with ‘fellow’ women and understood that sometimes tough decisions just had to be made, and there was no way around it. The cold ideology of today is so unwavering, and I really do believe it’s a whole lot more about controlling women’s bodies than any concern for the unborn.
Agree, Chips. And many priests. And there are still nuns (think Sister Simone and the singing anti-fracking nuns – Ha!) and priests (some of the progressive Jesuits, in particular) in this country who work closely with real live families and individuals and know what’s going on, too. I’m for “warm ideology” and against “controlling women’s bodies” just for the sake of controlling women’s bodies and minds and movements and … don’t get me started up again! “Love one another” is still a good moral compass for anybody with a religion or guided strictly by a brain and a heart.
See Jacqueline, if you had been my head nun I might even have become one myself!!!
Sorry (run for your life), but I’m getting ready to tell ya another one of me “old stories.”
When I was in 8th grade and still a little holy roller (right before I discovered boys – it’s not like the younger girls of today), I went home after school and told my holy Catholic mother that the nun had asked me if I wanted to become a nun. My holy Catholic mother said, “And what did you tell her?” And I said I told her I had thought about it. And my holy Catholic mother (who sorta cursed like a sailor and would throw ya to the Catholic she-wolves on occasion) said, “You go right back in there tomorrow and tell her you’ve changed your mind. They’ll be after you for the rest of your g–damned life!”
Amen.
😆 Your holy Catholic mother sounded quite, quite magnificent!!! Love it!!
She was, thanks! (When she passed away, one of her young greatgrandkids said, “Oh, I will miss her jokes!” – only they weren’t jokes, they were just her cheerful, devilish ways!) 🙂
“Here’s a general rule,” Obama said. “When you’re 9, you don’t need a bucket list,” and the girls laughed. “When you get to be 52, then you might want to draw one up.”
^^^^So adorable! So profound! Good afternoon, all! Thanks for this lovely post, Chips, as I listen to the President in the background. Friday’s good.
john miller, I agree with you 100%.
Good West Coast morning Chipsticks & TOD family.
I bet the Secret Service guys wish they were protecting a less active President. He goes body surfing, jumping off walls, playing basketball, soccer, chasing dogs, playing golf…
MoooooOOOoooooOOOooooorning GGail!!
THIS says it all…
Thank you Chips for these amazing pictures. What other President gets involved with people like President Obama does? I love him so very much.
The media is so fucking stupid.
What a dick. And she’s STILL going on about the IRS?!?! 😆
SMH. 🙄
What an ARSE from Politico:

GA Chips, TOD……. hope everyone is looking forward to the weekend!
Chips,
I hope that you post videos from Maddow’s show from last night. They were very good about GOP Voter Suppression in North Carolina.
Thank rikyrah, haven’t seen any yet, will see if I can find them later.
PIE!!!!
That not right, he gets to stop and brag about getting pies. When I want some pie I have to sneak down to the corner store and buy pie out of a bag, then listen to my wife yell at me for not eating healthy.
Aw, poor Don! Would a virtual pie help?
As long as Mrs. Don doesn’t find out.
Our secret.
While maybe I shouldn’t encourage subterfuge, I think the President eats his pies out of the eyesight of his wife, so try it!
Allison, that looks like Bob Casey with him.
PIEEEEEEEE!! I know he’s going to buy a peach pie and a cream pie.
I’ll weep if we read that’s the one he chose! 😆
Close but no cigar. I know he likes coconut cream and I know he loves peaches. Cherries are nearly out of season so I didn’t think he’d get cherry. But YUMMMMM.
Posting a Heads Up soonish!
Bring it. I have a special vid to post in honor of the weekend march.
Cool!!
Putting stuff together as we speak.

Now that I gotta see. 🙂

I never get the picture thing right. 😦 The picture is the one with PBO and the girl’s soccer team.
