Michelle Obama: Leader

****

Parade Magazine: Michelle Obama On The Move: What Will She Do Next?

Nearly five years after moving into the White House, Michelle Obama could not look more at home. Posing in the formal Green Room, she appears both relaxed and invigorated, embracing the undefined (and undefinable) roles of Spouse in Chief, Role Model in Chief, and Mom in Chief. But it’s the last one that makes the first lady shine brightest of all. Put her in a room with kids—whether her own or the nation’s—and she glows. In fact, at the second annual Kids State Dinner on July 9, Mrs. Obama beamed at the success of 54 students who won a nationwide competition, sponsored by Epicurious.com, to develop creative, delicious, and healthful recipes.

An outgrowth of her Let’s Move! program to curb childhood obesity within a generation, the State Dinner (which happened at lunch) featured dishes like Lucky Lettuce Cups and Bodacious Banana Muffins, as well as an appearance by her husband, whom she playfully tweaked for admitting he’d hated vegetables as a kid. As she sat with Parade the following day, Mrs. Obama was regal in a magenta sheath yet so down-to-earth that she quickly fluffed the cushion of an antique couch between photo takes. No longer sporting the bangs that caused such a sensation (“You know, it’s hard to make speeches with hair in your face!”), the first lady spoke to us about her second-term goals for her childhood obesity fight, her maturing family, and her dreams for America’s children.

More of this must read here

She is incredible! I feel so proud of our First Couple.

I posted this after you published this post so bringing it forward, very appropriate to a post about our powerful First Lady.

Nice analysis about women in politics and the effect of the anti-abortion and other state laws that are just plain anti-women. And with Emily’s List, Madam President and Kirsten Gillibrand’s Off the Sidelines among others, Democratic women voters and politicians are empowered more and more.

The Party Of Old, Rich White Men Finding Themselves In Trouble Because Of Lack Of Women
    http://www.addictinginfo.org/2013/08/07/the-party-of-old-rich-white-men-finding-themselves-in-trouble-because-of-lack-of-women/

House Republicans are starting to realize just how under-represented women are in their party, and the gender gap is starting to worry them (just like underrepresentation of minorities has been “worrying” them since last November). Around the country, the GOP finds itself run primarily by men, with scant representation for women. Just 8 percent of House Republicans are women (19), and only four Senate Republicans are women. By contrast, 32 percent of House Democrats are women (62), and 16 of the Senate Democrats are women. Unlike the 2012 presidential election, the current list for 2016 has not a single woman on it….

….Their issue with prescription contraception is especially puzzling, because it’s been shown that providing such free of charge dramatically reduces the abortion rate. That suggests that it’s not about the rights of unborn babies, nor is it about violating religious beliefs, but that it’s about controlling women’s sexuality, even that of married women…..

Tme, it’s almost funny to see how clueless these ‘let’s recruit women’ Republicans are. It’s just like McCain thinking that ll he needed was a female as a running mate and it didn’t matter if she was a hate-filled, inarticulate, uninformed idiot. They have so much contempt for women that they think we’ll be duped by someone’s appearance and won’t recognize BS when we hear it. Plus everything they say, everything they do or try to enact is misogynist to the core.

This tweet is in reference to an incident which took place last night at Regal Theatres in Silver Spring MD. Apparently, for the showing of the hit film “The Butler” the theater hired security guards to “police” the mostly Black movie goers, herding them like cattle, treating them with suspicion, asking them to show their tickets repeatedly etc. What the security guards did not anticipate, however, is that one of the movie attendees is a professional activist and organizer – and who quickly reported her experience on Twitter and elsewhere, and has even secured an interview from ABC news about this incident.

The organizer is MsFlowersTweets and you can read her TL for further details about what happened and what she did about it.

Now this is a great example of effective activism – identification of a CONCRETE issue that directly and clearly affected an individual or large groups of individuals and for which actions can be taken to prevent future occurrences.

This truly enrages me, Df. I wish there were a way to sue Regal Theaters or boycott them. This kind of behavior has to stop and word of the theater’s ill treatment of minorities needs to be spread far and wide. I can tell you I’m not going to a Regal Theater any time soon. Sickening, disgusting and depressing that we have come to this in this country.

So I guess Regal Cinema thought that the AA audience was going to come dressed as butlers and start raising hell?

        August 18, 2013 at 2:54 pm

That Theater was willing and eager to Take the AA community Money for profit and yet wanted to control them by being totally offensive?

        August 18, 2013 at 3:28 pm

Don, I don’t think the word “thought” and Regal Cinema belong in the same sentence. This was unthinking, reactive racism and the need
        to suffer the consequences.

DD4O, hi dear precious family member. I know that you are very happy to have your governor. This is “unfrigginbelievable, but sadly not surprising.” When will this remnant of society not get it? Maybe the person who thought of this type of treatment should have sat down and viewed the moving and hopefully come away with a sweeter understanding of what really took place in our nation. Hopefully, this wonderful people who are willing and ready to inform others of the wrong actions of others. I am so happy to hear that these people will give hopefully a great interview and ABC will not edit it to death; and the people can learn something from all of this.

I am going to stay like these wonderful pro-active people because of the young precious minds who will have to take this nation to yet another level that is full of greatness for all people. We will continue to work for that, but be ready to go forth and work in firmness of actions to right these wrongs. And that is what it is, wrongness.

We lived this stuff. This is not a little story to stir up crap. This happened to so many of us and our mothers, fathers, uncles, aunties, and their families. Lives can be better when we teach by our ‘Better Actions.’ HZ

This reminds me of a trip to Baltimore Harbor a friend and I took one weekend in 1988 (I looked that year up; don’t worry, I don’t have total recall of me whole life!). We stopped in an inner-city Baltimore neighborhood movie theater one afternoon to see Jeremy Irons (one of my favorite actors) in “Dead Ringer.”

My friend’s the type who DOES NOT SPEAK while watching a film. I knew that going in, and I was prepared to be as quiet as I could be. After we got our noisy popcorn and noisy drinks and got seated in the front of the theater, we realized we were the only two white people in the packed house (we didn’t happen to be “afraid of” black moviegoers as in the Silver Spring, MD, story and didn’t run out with our hair on fire to call for protection, but I digress).

“Dead Ringer” started, my friend got real quiet and ready to be immersed, and we were both subsequently treated to many of our fellow moviegoers, mostly older teenagers, male and female, taking turns speaking back to the screen and each other, like they were answering the preacher. It went on for most of the film, and involved all of us. I chuckled to myself since my friend’s NO TALKING rule was being violated … but the two of us were soon turning around laughing at the comments and heckles, which were hysterically funny, with everyone else. You couldn’t help it. It was one of my most enjoyable afternoons in a movie theater that could have gone wrong, otherwise, because “Dead Ringer” wasn’t that great, so it kind of saved the day.

Even without total recall, I don’t remember feeling the need for any armed security guards to sit between us and the black teenagers, strictly there to watch a film.

    • 79 Linda
      August 18, 2013 at 4:13 pm

Here is another great interview with him.

Representative John Lewis (D-GA) talked about his autobiography, Across That Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change, about his own early involvement in the non-violent protests of the civil rights movement. He recounted his experience leading a group of students across the Edmond Pettus Bridge in Alabama when he was 25 years old, and how he and other students were beaten and arrested by state troopers.

He commented on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Stokely Carmichael and other early participants in the movement. He described meeting his wife at a dinner party in 1967, and his early childhood interest in becoming a minister.
John Lewis was first elected to his 5th District seat in 1986.

Before that, he served on the Atlanta city council. He was born in Troy, Alabama, and attended the American Baptist Theological Seminary and Fisk University, majoring in philosophy. He was the longest serving chairman of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee.

“To this day, NSA not linked to 1 harm of identifiable innocent.”

This is exactly what I’ve been pointing out when dealing with the Greenwald/Snowden/ Assange cultists! In the 1960’s, when the FBI embarked on spying on Civil Rights leaders and Organizations, for the purpose of disrupting and defeating the movement, real victims of that spying could be easily identified. To this date, I’ve not seen any evidence that the NSA illegally spied on an innocent American. Like I’ve been saying, California Highway Patrol (CHP) has cameras all over that take pictures of all the motorists, these who obey traffic laws and those who disobey them. In theory, one could argue that the government of California, especially the Governor, is violating the privacy rights of Californians. In reality, probably over 99% of Californians have never been harmed by those cameras because they are focused on catching traffic violators who endanger the safety of all law abiding Californians.

3CHICSPOLITICO Reviews Lee Daniels’ The Butler:

I went to see The Butler, and since I know Ametia’s going to see it too, I thought we’d write our own thoughts about the movie.

I really liked it. I had trepidation going into it, but came out of it really liking it.

I liked it because I thought Daniels brought a lot of Black Pain in vivid color, pretty much from the opening scene, with Mariah Carey and David Banner, which was about as ugly and truthful as anything in Black History.

For me, all the scenes with regards to Black Pain was brutal, honest, forthright, and I appreciated them being put ‘in color’. I have seen numerous pieces on Black History, especially with the Civil Rights Movement, but they were usually in Black and White. By bringing those scenes in color, IMO, makes it real for generations who don’t even know their history.

Ugh. Is it we 2016 yet. I cannot wait until the Obamas says deuces to the Dems and the WH. Cause Its obvious the Obama admin will never be able to get anything done that will be satisfying to people when it comes to stuff like this. Serious question are all these things just the overflow from Bush era, national security policies? Or these all things of the Obama admin own makings?

Also if 2014 is anything like the last midterm elections then Obama will have an even worse Congress to deal wit cause yall know I already see that the fauz-gressive/libertarian faction led by GG will be total dicks up until Obama leaves the WH. How can ANY admin get anything done under these kind of circumstances.

please ignore the loudest rabid left – they too were defeated by PBO in 2012.

How? Because the same people threatened that they would not show up to help with the election and thereby prove PBO could not win without them. I suspect that some were wishing PBO looses so that they could say: we told you so … if only he had not “abandoned” us.

some were the greatest propagandist of “no enthusiasm in PBO base” stories. Of course they forget that these extremes are NOT PBO’s base.

I will be right there reminding David Sirota and Glenn Greenwald and their cults that none of them have been spied on, or had their freedom of speech or freedom of the press infringed upon, under President Obama. Yet they go around inflaming people about a police state under President Obama.
