Still complaining about the deficit? The latest monthly statement from the U.S. Treasury shows that even without destroying the social safety net or striking a grand bargain, it’s being erased.
…. So as you listen to people complaining about the annual deficit, remember that it is melting away. The miracle cure for deficits, it turns out, isn’t ripping up the social safety net, or a grand bargain. It’s growth, combined with some fiscal restraint, and higher taxes. Compared with a year ago, there are about 2.2 million more people working today, at slightly higher wages, paying slightly higher taxes. The combination of those forces pushes collections higher. Meanwhile, spending on anti-poverty programs like unemployment benefits falls as unemployment claims decline. Winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has reduced the Pentagon budget. And the sequester has taken a bite out of the budget of many agencies. The combination of those forces pushes spending lower. The latest update on this year’s fiscal situation confirms that each of these trends is fully intact.

Washington Post: Obama pushes ambitious Internet access plan for schools
President Obama liked the idea laid out in a memo from his staff: an ambitious plan to expand high-speed Internet access in schools that would allow students to use digital notebooks and teachers to customize lessons like never before. Better yet, the president would not need Congress to approve it.
White House senior advisers have described the little-known proposal, announced earlier this summer under the name ConnectEd, as one of the biggest potential achievements of Obama’s second term.

Bob Cesca: Cory Booker Wins Senate Primary. The Far-Left Wins Nothing. Again.
Newark, New Jersey mayor Cory Booker is one step closer to being the next senator from the Garden State. He won the Democratic primary on Tuesday by a significant margin over his rivals, Rep. Frank Pallone, Assembly Speaker Shiela Oliver and Rep. Rush Holt.
Historically speaking, if he wins on October 16, Booker will also be the only elected African American member of the United States Senate, and the ninth member in history. (Yeah, there’s still something very, very wrong with American voters.)
There’s another dimension to this election, meanwhile, that only appeared briefly on the blogs and via social media. Were it not for the divisiveness on the left created by the Edward Snowden NSA drama, with far-left activists supporting Snowden’s leaks and with pragmatic center-left liberals expressing disdain for the hyperbolic, outraged sensationalism of the story, the New Jersey special election would’ve surely been a huge battleground between those two factions.

Steve Benen: Congress Isn’t ‘Exempt’ From ObamaCare
If you’ve been following the health care debate lately, you’ve probably heard quite a bit of talk about Congress being “exempt” from the Affordable Care Act. It’s a talking point the right has pushed quite aggressively, but is it true? Republicans certainly want us to think so. Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas)complained about an “outrageous exemption for Congress.” The far-right editorial page of the Wall Street Journal and Heritage Foundation president Jim DeMint touted a similar line last week. Over the weekend, Republican media figures, including Bill Kristol and Ana Navaro, repeated the talking point on the Sunday shows, and no one thought to correct them. This morning, in an unusually hysterical piece, a Washington Times columnist suggested the policy might constitute “treason.” (No, seriously, that’s what it said.)
The policy certainly sounds awful, doesn’t it? If “Obamacare” is so great, why are members of Congress eager to exempt themselves from the new federal system? No wonder Fox is soworked up over this. The problem, as you might have guessed, is that the argument is so wildly misleading, it bears no meaningful connection to reality.

USA Today: President Obama is going retro when it comes to honoring sports champions.
Next week, Obama will host a White House ceremony honoring the 40th anniversary of the 1972-73 Miami Dolphins, the last National Football League team to go undefeated in the regular season and playoffs.
That Dolphins team famously went 17-0, beating the Washington Redskins in the Super Bowl on Jan. 14, 1973.

It is a shame. How dare these doctors play God because of the choices someone makes. We know this is BS. It was about his race and they did not feel he is worthy. Thank you, again.
Sometimes we get so caught up in reacting to the day-to-day poutrages from the “purity left” or the plain outrages from the right, that we forget to address underlying themes that the GOP keeps pushing to create divides in this country. People ALWAYS worry that someone else is getting something they’re not….in all facets of life….the base argument or concern for just about every issue we face, from immigration to healthcare to food stamps….
When I entered the full time job market in the early 1970’s as a legal secretary, there was no question that benefits would be offered. People used to compare job offers based on the benefits package. Sick days, vacation, health and life insurance – it was a given. Regular raises, Christmas bonuses. This was a direct result of the power of unions who had demanded and won over a half century, a reasonable work week, reasonable working conditions, benefits in lieu of salary. It upon this foundation that the American modern middle class was built. It wasn’t a question of whether you got health insurance, but how good the waiting period was, the amount of co-pays, etc.
This was before Reagan. Insurance companies were non-profit (not the fake non-profit that BCBS is now). Claims were paid. You went to ER, the claim was paid. You needed a procedure, the claim was paid. It was a contract that you would pay in to the system, and there would be no question that you would get the benefits that you paid for.
Reagan ruined the middle class – period. Insurance companies were regulated – they could only purchase very safe, conservative investment vehicles like real estate. They could not gamble with people’s premiums and limit care in order to pay dividends when their casino-like use of our money hurt their bottom line.
My uncle was a high level insurance executive – think Richard Gilmore from the Gilmore Girls. He died in 1968. There was no question that you would receive your benefits.
I now work for a very wealthy man who owns apartment buildings. I know what he does with his profits (it frankly is the reason I’m employed). I also know the slum conditions of his buildings. At one point I thought of bargaining with him for an increase because he didn’t have to pay benefits for me. To only find out – he pays benefits for no one and – wait for it – he hasn’t for the last 10 years!
People have to work for him for 4 years before they get any paid vacation. I remember in 1972 weighing job offers, it was a question of whether I had to wait 6 months or a year.
Republicans have ruined this country. What is so distressing is that millions of Americans don’t know what made this country strong in the first place in the 20th century.
God, I should have proofed this first. I shouldn’t write long comments when I haven’t had coffee.
Reagan didn’t regulate insurance – it was regulated BEFORE he deregulated the industry.

there are many factors leading to the decline of middle class…the decline of UNION membership is a BIG One…the lost of manufacturing jobs (where alot of the organize workers were)is another…/the reason many companies shipped jobs overseas and Congress aided and abetted by offering tax breaks to those companies that did…
Many workers today do not know the storied history of the union battles and victories…it is similar to the civil rights struggles …if we do not pass on the baton…if we do not tell the stories of those movements …they will be lost…
The history of unions is virtually banned from public schools. This was part of history and social studies when I was growing up. It has vanished from public consciousness and it is terrifying.
Hey, unions are not entirely innocent, if we’re going to be fair. When I argue with people about unions I always say that I criticize some of their methods and abuse of power but I will defend to the death the need for and right of unions to function robustly in America.
I had a good friend whose dad worked for the railroad unions. This was in the 1970’s. She was proud of the fact that he actually worked about 3 months out of the year and got paid full time and paid handsomely. My husband worked for the railroads early in his working career, and when he tried to stay busy and asked what else he could do he was told, “don’t kill the job”. While guys would come in, flip a switch and leave to do their second or third jobs.
I will always be aware of those failings but without unions, business will destroy the worker and thereby the middle class. They will not act in good faith and now we have a CW that obscene profits are ‘normal’ at the expense of the worker. This is actually a new phenomena and it is destroying us.

This is an idea I’ve been formulating lately. Because it’s not just that lower wages and benefits are now being paid due to the destruction of unions in this country – it’s that for the first time, children are not doing better than their parents. There is a long term consequence that gets lost in these discussions.

Also…..remember that “tax rebate” GWB gave everyone in 2001? The “cash in hand” another ploy to make people feel temporarily good and like him? I’m sure others can also remember specific instances of this decline.
When I was hired in teaching eons ago, the first thing the school district bragged about was its package of benefits. These were seen as an incentive to get good people. Now they’re viewed as a horrible expense to be ripped up.

At every turn, the far-left stupidly undermines its political goals simply because it doesn’t understand the realities of American politics. And if perchance I’m wrong, and they do get it, they spend way too much energy trying to reinvent the wheel rather than, you know, winning. If many of these fast food and restaurant owners plan to cut hours so they can keep their profits and have sick people handling the food we eat, I say don’t eat at these places. They need to get the same treatment that Pizza idiot got when he said the same thing. I can’t believe people will cut hours for an already low wage worker just so they don’t have to provide healthcare. Then maybe their hourly wages need to increase so they can afford healthcare. I think cities should charge these fast food places who don’t provide healthcare a fee to cover the cost of these people getting medicare.

I read that NBC “investigates” report yesterday and it was IDENTICAL to a story I read months ago. Same quotes from the same small business owner and community college. Propaganda 101. They polished up an old turd and presented it as new. In addition, I was struck by the articles boast that it based its conclusions of interviews “with almost 20 small businesses from across the country”. That is way too small a sample size to justify the article’s claims (I think they were very selective in choosing the businesses they surveyed to insure getting an anti-ACA result). On another point, the article seems to want people to view PBO and the ACA as the “bad guys” and not the business owners who are screwing their employees. As the Papa Johns boycott illustrated, people are more likely to place blame on the business owner despite the wishes of our corporate owned, propaganda spewing MSM.
I knew when that report was about to come on that it was going to be a hit piece. I saw a similar story on another news outlet several months ago, but can’t remember where. I’m very pessimistic about Egypt. And about a lot of middle-east countries as a matter of fact. Civil wars are inevitable I think. Too many tensions, weak political institutions. They’re in for at least a decade of bloodshed, before finding out on their own that killing each other is no solution.
I think President Obama has demonstrated a lot of wisdom in accelerating the work towards energy independence.
It seems that continuous civil strife will happen before democracy can take root – so much loss
Democracy is not an inevitability…
Civil war is often an unfortunate phase young democracies must endure. It was true of the United States and it seems to be true for Egypt.
So – Al-jazeera America will be news-only. No opinion, no pundits.
If true…..Yes. But Time will tell.
The market will decide. I am sick to death of 24/7 pundits who literally get in the way of the news. So yes, time will tell.

I’m talking about the new network that replaces Current, starting next Tuesday. Their approach will be hard news only. I do, however, expect ‘analysts’ to bleed through who become (or are) pundits. But I am sick of these cable news channels that don’t televise a speech, but only the ‘opinions’ of their pundits.

I saw that this Morning and She was 1001% correct…..the irony and the similarities were spot on.
The skit they did on Chris Matthews and his presidential predictions were Golden too. They had a chicken on his head too. Just too funny and Real.
Something to think about, it wasn’t the boys in the hood who nearly brought this country to it’s knees 2008. It was the white boys in the wall st. hood.

If the republican’teaparty put half as much energy into working for the greater good of the people, as they do fighting us they would be so much more productive and happy. The insanity is truly amazing to watch.
