This is brutal, and so true…….

His White House runs on the idea that if you are virtuous and true and honorable, people will ultimately come to you. (An ethos that sometimes collides with political success.) That “sometimes” is a classic. It almost reminds me of the Monty Python Life of Brian skit about “what the Romans ever did for us”. Obama’s political style is useless, apart from becoming the first black president, saving the US from another Great Depression, succeeding at getting universal healthcare, rescuing the American auto industry, presiding over a civil rights revolution, ending two failed wars, avoiding two doomed others (against Syria and Iran), bringing the deficit down while growing the economy, focusing the executive branch on climate change, and killing bin Laden. Yes his ethos “sometimes” “collides” with political success.

But no, he has never obsessed about whom the capitol is buzzing about – i.e. boomers and their Clinton obsession. Which is proof enough of his transformation of American politics. He has transformed it so much that MoDo cannot even understand how he has been so successful.

“It is not, for example, a threat to Obama that Hillary is already up to her neck in campaign machinations and shenanigans. This is the Clintons’ natural state of rest: machinations and shenanigans in the seeking and holding of power and money. And there is no cost to Obama if Hillary is campaigning to complete Bill’s third term. If she succeeds, then a great deal of Obama’s legacy is secure, and part of it could be the final humiliation of the GOP at his successor’s hands. If she doesn’t succeed – and she has never won a race outside the super-safe New York Senate seat she was bequeathed by her marriage – then … the story is all about the Clintons’ failure, not Obama’s. The president’s current strategy gives him a chance of winning either way. It’s not high-minded. It’s the most nakedly political position there is.”

Andrew Sullivan calls it like it is. I might not agree with him on everything, but I believe he does believe in the greater good, and I’m all about that.

  15. August 12, 2013 at 11:45 am

In case you missed these two items….. (Stuck in an airport terminal….sorry if reposted)

According to the 2010 American Community Survey (ACS), one in 10 of the nation’s 12.5 million nonelderly veterans reports neither having health insurance coverage nor using Veterans Affairs (VA) health care. While veterans are less likely than the rest of the nonelderly population to be uninsured, there are an estimated 1.3 million uninsured veterans nationwide. Another 0.9 million veterans use VA care, but have no other health insurance coverage. An additional 0.9 million adults and children in veterans’ families are uninsured. Both uninsured veterans and their family members report significantly less access to needed health care than their counterparts with insurance coverage. Compared with insured veterans, uninsured veterans have served more recently, are younger, have lower levels of education, are less likely to be married, and are less connected to the labor force—all of which could contribute to lower access to employer-sponsored coverage. Uninsurance among veterans ranges widely across states—from under 5 percent to over 17 percent—and state variation remains even when adjusting for veterans’ demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. States also vary in levels of uninsurance among veterans’ family members. The coverage provisions slated to be implemented under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2014, could increase coverage among the U.S. population, including many uninsured veterans. We estimate that nearly half of uninsured veterans would qualify forexpanded Medicaid coverage. Another 40 percent of uninsured veterans could potentially qualify for subsidized coverage through health insurance exchanges if they do not have access to affordable employer coverage.

I posted the LA Times piece on DU and was flamed like there’s no tomorrow! In fact, that’s what I’m doing over here. (Not flaming, lol, just needed some fresh air. I’m usually a pretty tough gal but I was almost in tears ). I’m mimi85 over tthere, Cha. You were the only one who had the spine to not jump down my throat. They were like a pack of jackals! Even when I don’t agree with someone I try to disagree politely, if there’s such a word. I thought we were all about tolerance?

My DH said to take some deep breaths and let it go. They don’t know me, but I actually think I’m a fairly kind
person. This whole NSA thing has been like a heavy weight on my shoulders . I know PBO and FLOTUS can handle it as they’ve shown in the past, but it kills me to look at Sasha and Malia and know they must hear some of this BS. And these are supposedly dems and progressives! Think I’ll listen go to some good music and rest for awhile.

BTW, have any of you seen Beasts of the Southern Wild? I’m still in awe. I rarely watch movies more than once but this one requires extra viewings for sure. We watched it last night, maybe that’s why I’m overly sensitive today.

Thanks for letting me share my silly pity party with you all. Time to let the jerks go. You all rock!

      • 66 jackiegrumbacher
        August 12, 2013 at 2:18 pm

Layla, you are so right with that reality check. No one I know or talk to has one iota of concern about Snowden. People are running around outfitting their kids for school, getting in a last chance summer vacation before September comes, paying bills, tending dry lawns, trying to get house repairs done. Talk about immigration is high among Latinos and many are still concerned about jobs. In politics, there’s talk about the local races, next year’s governor’s race, taxes, cuts to education, traffic snarls. As you say, those who bloviate on tv are truly talking to themselves, patting each other on the back, creating stupid games that no one else is playing and otherwise making asses of themselves. IOW, they are becoming more irrelevant by the day.

    • 67 COS

They keep saying shootings are down this year in Chicago, but it doesn’t seem like it. There were 30 shootings over the weekend, 4 killed, familiar, ongoing stats. A 4 year old girl and her 17 year old brother were shot last night when a car pulled alongside the car they were riding in and started spraying the car with bullets in what is now described as a case of mistaken identity.
I join others who are not going to give up on some action being taken regarding the continuing proliferation of guns, the loosened gun laws and the destructive and tragic gun violence in this country.

    • 70 57andfemale
      August 12, 2013 at 1:06 pm

The under-reported wars on our streets are the direct result of ALEX-fueled NRA laws that make gun trafficking legal. This is the story that should be told. We can no longer get the bad guys on gun laws, like we used to. And the direct result is war-worthy munitions on city streets in the U.S.

Why aren’t the Libertarians in the streets cheering the “stop and frisk” ruling and the announcement by Attorney General Holder about decreasing sentences for non-violent drug offenders? Why aren’t Libertarians blowing up twitter? I’ll tell you why, because they couldn’t care less about civil liberties. This whole exercise about Snowden and Manning is nothing more than a mental circle-jerk wherein each libertarian seeks to top the other by making the most outrageous statement about the government intruding into the lives of its citizens.

By listening to these morons one would think that spying began in January of 2009 and that the war on civil liberties began shortly thereafter. The government isn’t any more intrusive now than what they have always been. But what has changed is the technology that the government uses. We have with open eyes given up some level of privacy due to our use of technology. I see people in my local 7-11 using debit cards just to purchase to bottle of water. On the highway you don’t even have to stop and pay a toll; you can purchase a sticker that automatically takes money out of an account you set up. Let’s not even talk about navigational systems that will soon become standard equipment in all vehicles.

I mean really, I’m just not convinced that the government really gives a damn about which websites Don visits late at night when his wife is at work.

    • August 12, 2013 at 1:23 pm

No, and other countries knew it too. Remember the spy plane China brought down in April 2001? They kept the crew for awhile interrogated them? And J. Edgar Hoover?

  30. August 12, 2013 at 1:19 pm

The Andrea Mitchell sub (Peter Jacobson?) is not much of an improvement, if any. Why do these anchors always have to be so petty and snide in their reporting? He showed PBO meeting with Susan Rice today and made some comment about their sports attire, as if they should be dressed formally on vacation—-nothing about why they were talking—-getting natl. security updates etc. Then he aired golf footage from yesterday, commenting that it looks like PBO still needs help with his game. Can they never just report that it looks like PBO is enjoying some well-deserved time away, having fun on the golf course on a beautiful day on Martha’s Vineyard? Would that be so hard or too decent?
