REMINDER:At 1PM ET / 12PM CT / 10AM PT, Attorney General Eric Holder addresses the American Bar Association’s annual meeting in San Francisco where he is expected to discuss drug offenses and prison sentencing. C-SPAN One will air it.
His White House runs on the idea that if you are virtuous and true and honorable, people will ultimately come to you. (An ethos that sometimes collides with political success.) That “sometimes” is a classic. It almost reminds me of the Monty Python Life of Brian skit about “what the Romans ever did for us”. Obama’s political style is useless, apart from becoming the first black president, saving the US from another Great Depression, succeeding at getting universal healthcare, rescuing the American auto industry, presiding over a civil rights revolution, ending two failed wars, avoiding two doomed others (against Syria and Iran), bringing the deficit down while growing the economy, focusing the executive branch on climate change, and killing bin Laden. Yes his ethos “sometimes” “collides” with political success.
But no, he has never obsessed about whom the capitol is buzzing about – i.e. boomers and their Clinton obsession. Which is proof enough of his transformation of American politics. He has transformed it so much that MoDo cannot even understand how he has been so successful.
“It is not, for example, a threat to Obama that Hillary is already up to her neck in campaign machinations and shenanigans. This is the Clintons’ natural state of rest: machinations and shenanigans in the seeking and holding of power and money. And there is no cost to Obama if Hillary is campaigning to complete Bill’s third term. If she succeeds, then a great deal of Obama’s legacy is secure, and part of it could be the final humiliation of the GOP at his successor’s hands. If she doesn’t succeed – and she has never won a race outside the super-safe New York Senate seat she was bequeathed by her marriage – then … the story is all about the Clintons’ failure, not Obama’s. The president’s current strategy gives him a chance of winning either way. It’s not high-minded. It’s the most nakedly political position there is.”
Andrew Sullivan calls it like it is. I might not agree with him on everything, but I believe he does believe in the greater good, and I’m all about that.
luuuuuv this picture because this is what drives the right wing nuts insane, they can’t fathom the idea of black leadership in this country, I am overjoyed seeing Susan Rice in this position, direct access to our lovely President
I am overjoyed that we no longer have to see gruesome pre-9/11 images of Condi Rice’s giving W his daily “briefings,” the little that W actually wanted to hear or could comprehend.
Good morning yardarm and all of TOD. The weather this morning in Martha’s vineyard was in the mid 60’s so they have on light jackets. It’s 81 degrees in DC right now but the weather channel is reporting 72 degrees where the President is vacationing.
Thanks for the CSPAM info on AG Eric Holder’s talk at SF Bar Assoc. today. I’m sure there will be lots of press on this event because Hillary is also speaking.
According to the 2010 American Community Survey (ACS), one in 10 of the nation’s 12.5 million nonelderly veterans reports neither having health insurance coverage nor using Veterans Affairs (VA) health care. While veterans are less likely than the rest of the nonelderly population to be uninsured, there are an estimated 1.3 million uninsured veterans nationwide. Another 0.9 million veterans use VA care, but have no other health insurance coverage. An additional 0.9 million adults and children in veterans’ families are uninsured. Both uninsured veterans and their family members report significantly less access to needed health care than their counterparts with insurance coverage. Compared with insured veterans, uninsured veterans have served more recently, are younger, have lower levels of education, are less likely to be married, and are less connected to the labor force—all of which could contribute to lower access to employer-sponsored coverage. Uninsurance among veterans ranges widely across states—from under 5 percent to over 17 percent—and state variation remains even when adjusting for veterans’ demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. States also vary in levels of uninsurance among veterans’ family members. The coverage provisions slated to be implemented under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2014, could increase coverage among the U.S. population, including many uninsured veterans. We estimate that nearly half of uninsured veterans would qualify forexpanded Medicaid coverage. Another 40 percent of uninsured veterans could potentially qualify for subsidized coverage through health insurance exchanges if they do not have access to affordable employer coverage.
Hello my Canadian friend! Still on the move, but will be lurking for another week or so…… then I will have some worthwhile threads to contribute hopefully.
I posted the LA Times piece on DU and was flamed like there’s no tomorrow! In fact, that’s what I’m doing over here. (Not flaming, lol, just needed some fresh air. I’m usually a pretty tough gal but I was almost in tears ). I’m mimi85 over tthere, Cha. You were the only one who had the spine to not jump down my throat. They were like a pack of jackals! Even when I don’t agree with someone I try to disagree politely, if there’s such a word. I thought we were all about tolerance?
My DH said to take some deep breaths and let it go. They don’t know me, but I actually think I’m a fairly kind
person. This whole NSA thing has been like a heavy weight on my shoulders . I know PBO and FLOTUS can handle it as they’ve shown in the past, but it kills me to look at Sasha and Malia and know they must hear some of this BS. And these are supposedly dems and progressives! Think I’ll listen go to some good music and rest for awhile.
BTW, have any of you seen Beasts of the Southern Wild? I’m still in awe. I rarely watch movies more than once but this one requires extra viewings for sure. We watched it last night, maybe that’s why I’m overly sensitive today.
Thanks for letting me share my silly pity party with you all. Time to let the jerks go. You all rock!
Hahahah, I was wondering if you had recovered – you were just a little toooo quiet.
I’m excited that we’ve/you’ve been noticed by Wendell Pierce. He’s gonna be on the new Michael J Fox show on NBC as Michael’s boss.
I’ll have to add it to my “must see tv”
Thank you Wendell for giving us a “Shout Out”! (I don’t tweet, can someone tweet this for us please)
Mr. Pierce will also be appearing in the last episodes of Treme coming soon to HBO. A Great show from david Simon who also gave us The Wire. Wendell was in that series, too.
LOL! Chips, next time I run into Wendell (yes, I met him a while back & he’s just simply a super nice guy), I’ll ask him to show you some love via twitter. So when Chips goes AWOL don’t believe that it’s all that Dingle Dongle thingie’s fault! 🙂
On the MSNBC 11am news their question was “Is Snowden winning”? What is it Snowden suppose to be winning? Snowden is a criminal who broke the law. And he deserve to be in prison for what he did.
Layla, you are so right with that reality check. No one I know or talk to has one iota of concern about Snowden. People are running around outfitting their kids for school, getting in a last chance summer vacation before September comes, paying bills, tending dry lawns, trying to get house repairs done. Talk about immigration is high among Latinos and many are still concerned about jobs. In politics, there’s talk about the local races, next year’s governor’s race, taxes, cuts to education, traffic snarls. As you say, those who bloviate on tv are truly talking to themselves, patting each other on the back, creating stupid games that no one else is playing and otherwise making asses of themselves. IOW, they are becoming more irrelevant by the day.
How could Snowden be winning when he is in Russia under Putin’s rule? The man who had a rock group arrested for expressing their opinion. This is what Snowden choose over our beloved country.
He’s not winning, COS. It’s all a lot of made up garbage designed to to undermine the president, please the GOP, feed the nutty left and irritate the general populace.
They keep saying shootings are down this year in Chicago, but it doesn’t seem like it. There were 30 shootings over the weekend, 4 killed, familiar, ongoing stats. A 4 year old girl and her 17 year old brother were shot last night when a car pulled alongside the car they were riding in and started spraying the car with bullets in what is now described as a case of mistaken identity.
I join others who are not going to give up on some action being taken regarding the continuing proliferation of guns, the loosened gun laws and the destructive and tragic gun violence in this country.
The under-reported wars on our streets are the direct result of ALEX-fueled NRA laws that make gun trafficking legal. This is the story that should be told. We can no longer get the bad guys on gun laws, like we used to. And the direct result is war-worthy munitions on city streets in the U.S.
Hf, I have no doubt in my mind that the state fair was complicit in this outrage. The fair needs to be held accountable in some way and it needs to feel the full wrath of decent people all over the country. The clown should not only be fired, but he should be banned from any public performance for life. There have to to consequences for this kind of racist crap or people will keep pushing the envelope.
Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-TX) told constituents at an event Saturday in his district that, although it would amount to a fruitless effort that could potentially damage the country, Republicans have the votes in the House to impeach President Barack Obama.
Impeach the president based on What exactly? Being Black? What? And they keep telling Us, it is Not about Race?
These simple minded sheepeople have no idea that President Obama is the only thing standing between them and the nihilistic republicans that are itching to go mad-max all over the country.
He’s lying, Nena. There are some Republican reps from swing districts and they would kiss their future goodbye if they went along with this witch hunt. Plus they cannot begin to imagine the tsunami of wrath that would fall on the US House if this would occur. It would mean the end of Republican Congressional leadership for decades.
Hello everyone. Today was my birthing day a “few” years ago. We added a Leo to the Pride. 😀 I hold the record on attending baseball, basketball, football and most importantly SOCCER games. I do have two sons. This young man helped win WY State High School Soccer as goalie. It came down to a shoot-out. 😀
Hi you all! Not sure if this was previously shared, but having the info again won’t hurt. Here is the link that list the cllmate change deniers that may represent you. We are asked to call and ask them when will they admit climate change is a problem (that needs attention).
Happy Monday, GGail!
Quick question – what can I do to convince you of my innocence of mind? I notice you were questioning this last night. /picture an angelic smilie right here/
Why aren’t the Libertarians in the streets cheering the “stop and frisk” ruling and the announcement by Attorney General Holder about decreasing sentences for non-violent drug offenders? Why aren’t Libertarians blowing up twitter? I’ll tell you why, because they couldn’t care less about civil liberties. This whole exercise about Snowden and Manning is nothing more than a mental circle-jerk wherein each libertarian seeks to top the other by making the most outrageous statement about the government intruding into the lives of its citizens.
By listening to these morons one would think that spying began in January of 2009 and that the war on civil liberties began shortly thereafter. The government isn’t any more intrusive now than what they have always been. But what has changed is the technology that the government uses. We have with open eyes given up some level of privacy due to our use of technology. I see people in my local 7-11 using debit cards just to purchase to bottle of water. On the highway you don’t even have to stop and pay a toll; you can purchase a sticker that automatically takes money out of an account you set up. Let’s not even talk about navigational systems that will soon become standard equipment in all vehicles.
I mean really, I’m just not convinced that the government really gives a damn about which websites Don visits late at night when his wife is at work.
No, and other countries knew it too. Remember the spy plane China brought down in April 2001? They kept the crew for awhile interrogated them? And J. Edgar Hoover?
OK flight is about ready * maintenance * ………the only time I can ever eat my favorite panini at The Corner Bakery 😦
A 3D printing technique developed by scientists at the heriot-watt university in Edinburgh produces clusters of human embryonic stem cells – a breakthrough which could pave the way to purpose-built replacement organs for patients, eliminating the need for organ donation, immune suppression and the problem of transplant rejection. the technique will enable more accurate human tissue models to be created – which are essential for drug development and toxicity-testing.
The Andrea Mitchell sub (Peter Jacobson?) is not much of an improvement, if any. Why do these anchors always have to be so petty and snide in their reporting? He showed PBO meeting with Susan Rice today and made some comment about their sports attire, as if they should be dressed formally on vacation—-nothing about why they were talking—-getting natl. security updates etc. Then he aired golf footage from yesterday, commenting that it looks like PBO still needs help with his game. Can they never just report that it looks like PBO is enjoying some well-deserved time away, having fun on the golf course on a beautiful day on Martha’s Vineyard? Would that be so hard or too decent?
MV Gazette reports that presidential caravan has made its way to a diff golf course today—–scattered showers in forecast.
Listening to AG Holder I’m convinced AGAIN by the certainty that the Obama Admin is determined to re-set the entire scope of government – moving toward ‘a more perfect union’, very definitively. That word ‘re-calibrate’ that he used is particularly apt, IMO.
Full disclosure: I work in a Federal Prison (please don’t ask me which one) I have thought for a long time that elderly prisoners should be released early.
I hope its working, but I still can’t get past the idea of an elderly person let alone an elderly drug addict being left on the street to fend for themselves.
Don, it was magnificent. PBO and his team really are in the vanguard in both their thinking and their actions. We cannot lose our momentum going forward with all the strides this administration has achieved.
I shudder, too. It’s very, very frightening. This is why we must fight tooth and nail to see that we have a candidate that is up to the task of preserving the history-making strides we’ve made under PBO and his team and to continuing our forward reach.
Am I first?
1st!
Nope!
I’m claiming first!
Not a chance!
Good Morning TODVille!
I’ll settle it, whoever has the shortest name is declared first.
That would be me of course (HF).
🙂
🙂
TY for that wonderful pic ut!!!! I will remember that day fondly for the rest of my life!
Layla, me too! One of the best days of my life. They flow with such grace.
This is brutal, and so true…….

Nobody does it better than Sully when it comes to MoDO & HillBill!
Aye Aye……

You have articulated my thoughts precisely re: Sully
It appears that it’s a three-way tie, hopefruit, NCLB, & Don – Congrats!
I will accept 1/3 of the prize.
Thanks, I will have the other 2/3.
GG, looks like all three bases are covered, but Who’s on First (LOL)?
Hu
Oh my goodness, you guys are hilarious. Thank you for literally making me laugh out loud.
😆
This was crazy, The Lovely Plains
Thanks UT…Beautiful!

Love love love this pic!!!!! What say you McShame, Miss Lindsey and puppet Ayotte!
Yes, very lovely. PBO dispenses with the drama and does what needs to be done. McShame and his gang can go sit down somewhere.
Ha ha! You had the same thing I had in mind when I commented on this pic on the previous thread.
Except your comment was infinitely more classy. 😀
Some people can leave the work at the office when they go on vacation, Presidents are never really on vacation.
It’s a 24/7 on call job. Having said that, the Rethugs can kiss where the sun don’t shine.
Good morning everyone. Did I hit a time warp? The weather outside is balmy but I see the First couple in winter clothes. Wassup?
Good morning yardarm and all of TOD. The weather this morning in Martha’s vineyard was in the mid 60’s so they have on light jackets. It’s 81 degrees in DC right now but the weather channel is reporting 72 degrees where the President is vacationing.
72 degrees, I’m packing right now. It is 86 here in North Carolina.
Perfect golf weather Donna! BTW I am soooo happy you had wonderful birthday and you were shown just how loved you are!
A salute to you this morning Sir! (inaug day pic)
Thanks. I was just wondering. 🙂
Oh I love that January picture of the First Couple.
President and First Lady.

I see Bloomberg thinks he can step on AG Eric Holder’s speech today. Why did Bloomberg schedule his speech the same time as AG Holder @ 1:00pm ET?
Because he is an..let’s see….starts with an a…
Yes, Bloomberg is certainly an ASS. I can’t wait until he’s no longer Mayor of NYC.
And now for the IMPORTANT news:
An early BD present for our Chips! How about that?
(Yes, I saw on the earlier post, and I know it’s on the right Twitter sidebar, but still…)
Ha, thank you Arapaho415 – that’s why I was missing for the last two hours, I had to go for a lie down!

What am I gonna do with you???!!!!!???@@@!!!!!
Now I’ve got everyone wondering why I’m trying to cover my monitor with my picture of POTUS :shame:
OK, then I’ll have to look for that show.

Rogue my azz
A “rogue rodeo clown” !!!!!!!!! Great defense, NOT. They are just afraid of loosing their taxpayer funded $!

ALERT: 1:00 PM ET – AG Holder remarks on criminal justice reform: http://www.cbsnews.com/liveFeed/widget.shtml
Seriously? Excuse me?

Hmm?
At the same time his State , by not expanding Medicaid leaves 248,0000 veterans and their families in TX with no health insurance.
As the President stated they want to impeach him for having the gall to run and win the presidency!
These simple minded sheepeople have no idea that President Obama is the only thing standing between them and the nihilistic republicans that are itching to go mad-max all over the country.

Wait – today is your birthday??????
she said birthing, not birthday
smh
Okay, I’m stoooopid: it’s Mikey’s birthday? Happy Birthday Mikey!!!!
No, my sons birthday. 12:15 pm. Hubby and Doctor couldn’t wait to get to lunch. And I was only in hospital a couple hours in labor. 😉
Woah, suuuuuuper fast!! Have a perfect day, Mikey!
Thanks Chips.
CarolMae – is that one of your sons? Is today his birthday?
Happy birthday Mikey!
Yes, I’m just a little proud.
You go right ahead 🙂
😉 Will do?
Happy Birthday to Mikey!! 🙂
😀
You’re an awesome mom! 🙂
A very Happy Birthday. We need another cake. 😀 My last one was not appropriate.
Happy Birthday!
He’s a big dude,Carolmae. Happy Birthing day & Happy Birthday Mikey.
Yes, he is 6’2″. He weighed 7.5 lbs. when born.

Thanks Chips! CSPAN One TV is also carrying his speech live 🙂
Damon Weaver – much taller and very grown up and assured back with PBO during 2012 campaign. Sweet.

Great link VC, thank you – will add it to the next post.
Rats! /smh/ Nonchalantly trying to sneak in to TOD never seems to work when you’re in the village.
Afternoon, CC! I notice you are having a good time this Monday after the break – including having a ‘special’ male following you!
So tomorrow’s your birthday?
It is, 57F. Tomorrow Chips will not be able to deny that she is a whole year older, though I don’t doubt she will try. 😉
Thanks!
Just called mine out. It’s easy.
Good! And a happy ‘Birthing Day’ to you, CarolMae!
Thanks VC.
Thanks vc.
We here in SoCal know who our deniers are. This is easy for some of my OFA peeps to call them out.
Have a great day today vc!
Happy Monday, GGail!

We should be more worried about hackers that what Snowden exposed. My cousin in Florida says identity theft is a very real problem.
MV Gazette reports that presidential caravan has made its way to a diff golf course today—–scattered showers in forecast.

thankfully I’m watching A.G. Holder on CSPAN right now, and not Koch-sponsored MSNBC.
Koch-sponsored MSNBC This should be a prefix to all tweets to them!
Listening to AG Holder I’m convinced AGAIN by the certainty that the Obama Admin is determined to re-set the entire scope of government – moving toward ‘a more perfect union’, very definitively. That word ‘re-calibrate’ that he used is particularly apt, IMO.
I’m sure the emprogs believe that it was the pressure from them that made AG Holder do this.
They don’t genuinely believe that – but they will dishonestly claim that to be the case.
Wow…this awesome!
Full disclosure: I work in a Federal Prison (please don’t ask me which one) I have thought for a long time that elderly prisoners should be released early.
The Netherlands leaves elderly drug addicts on the streets; as long as they behave.
They are meant as a deterrence to the 15-20 yo’s.
I hope its working, but I still can’t get past the idea of an elderly person let alone an elderly drug addict being left on the street to fend for themselves.
R.I.P. Eydie Gorme:

AG Holder is giving an incredibly inspiring speech. WOW, this is so forward thinking and NECESSARY.
Can’t wait to view it later.
Don, it was magnificent. PBO and his team really are in the vanguard in both their thinking and their actions. We cannot lose our momentum going forward with all the strides this administration has achieved.
The push back from this will be interesting and more revealing I’ll bet.
Oh, you know it will!
Excellent speech AG Holder! I shudder to think the day when you and President Obama are no longer in office.
I shudder, too. It’s very, very frightening. This is why we must fight tooth and nail to see that we have a candidate that is up to the task of preserving the history-making strides we’ve made under PBO and his team and to continuing our forward reach.
I missed it… my son and I are trying to rebuild a fence 😦 so hopefully AG Holder’s speech will be available later on.
WTF, Claire McCaskill:
New post.
