Rise and Shine

Four years ago – Pete Souza: “I was sitting in the reception area outside the Oval Office when Sasha walked by and headed to the Oval. I suspected something was up, so I followed her. Sasha then crawled into the office, hiding behind the sofa, and when she reached the far end, jumped up and yelled trying spook her dad.” Aug. 5, 2009

Dallas News: Obama order in wake of West blast a ‘game-changer’ in chemical safety, senator says

Barbara Boxer, chairwoman of the U.S. Senate’s environment and public works committee, sat visibly frustrated in a June congressional hearing. She finally told the Environmental Protection Agency official that “lives are being lost” while the agency failed to better safeguard the fertilizer chemical that blew up West.

Weeks later, Boxer wrote to the nation’s governors. She implored them to do what they could to improve the security of ammonium nitrate. Finally, the California Democrat turned to the White House. The results of her efforts became public last week when President Barack Obama issued an executive order directing the federal government to improve safety at chemical facilities.

“For me, it’s a game-changer,” Boxer said in an interview with The Dallas Morning News. “I saw the intransigence of some of the agencies. I saw them arguing and not committing. … We asked the president to help make sure this [type of disaster] never happens again.”….

Greg Sargent: Be very afraid of a government shutdown

Eric Cantor’s lengthy interview yesterday on Fox News Sunday is really worth reading in full and pondering at some length. It perfectly captures why it’s looking more and more likely that we are genuinely headed for a government shutdown this fall.

In the interview, Fox host Chris Wallace practically begs Cantor to have a reality-based conversation about the coming shutdown fight, the sequester, and Obamacare. Again and again, Cantor steers the conversation back into pure fantasy….

Paul Krugman: Republicans Against Reality

Last week House Republicans voted for the 40th time to repeal Obamacare. Like the previous 39 votes, this action will have no effect whatsoever. But it was a stand-in for what Republicans really want to do: repeal reality, and the laws of arithmetic in particular. The sad truth is that the modern G.O.P. is lost in fantasy, unable to participate in actual governing.

Just to be clear, I’m not talking about policy substance. I may believe that Republicans have their priorities all wrong, but that’s not the issue here. Instead, I’m talking about their apparent inability to accept very basic reality constraints, like the fact that you can’t cut overall spending without cutting spending on particular programs, or the fact that voting to repeal legislation doesn’t change the law when the other party controls the Senate and the White House.

Am I exaggerating? Consider what went down in Congress last week….

Time: Obama’s Photographer Joins Instagram

On July 24, Pete Souza, Chief Official White House Photographer, joined Instagram. However, his first photo was not of the President, but the instantly-recognizable Presidential Seal, along with the caption: “My maiden voyage on Instagram. Will bring you behind-the-scenes of the Presidency.” His second picture? Presidential grapes.

Since then, @petesouza has documented the inner workings of the White House and it’s staff, from Marine One’s shadow to the Presidential dog – Bo. Souza talked with TIME’s international picture editor, Patrick Witty, about Instagram and what we can expect to see on his feed (more Bo) and what we won’t see (selfies).

What made you take the plunge and open an Instagram account?

The digital folks here at the White House have been asking me to do this for some time and I thought the time was right to finally take the plunge.

Steve Benen: ‘It’s a critical first step’

In recent weeks, progressive activists in Florida have pushed a very specific message: in the wake of the George Zimmerman trial, state policymakers need to revisit the controversial “Stand Your Ground” law. Their task hasn’t been easy — Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) has refused to consider changes to the status quo.

Late last week, however, there was an unexpected breakthrough….

    Good Morning Chipsticks, TODers…Everyone!

Chipsticks, I guess you are having a working vacation. 🙂 At any rate, hope you are enjoying your “time off” and using it to rejuvenate.

Everyone have a fabulous day. Think about your blessings and smile. 😀

G’morning Chips, TOD, lurkers, everyone, and congrats Mariele on #1 🙂

Here is some great economic news to start the day/week!

    Yay, Chips!

UTA’s work this weekend has been stellar, as always.

She really kept the party going yesterday, in honor of our President’s wonderful birthday. Thanks to UTA and you for all that you do.

BTW, you must be vacationing in SoCal (joke). Its positively Alaskan summer-like here now, 53F. The one time I was in Alaska in July-Aug, the 5-day forecast for Juneau was hysterical: Hi 52 Low 51, five different ways to say “rain.

Couldn’t resist getting in a couple of more jabs at the very definition of WhitePrivilege scribes Fournier and Thrush. Late as usual, but here are my contributions this morning.

    • August 5, 2013 at 10:20 am

Ran out of room in first tweet, which included a photo taken by David Hume Kennerly, President Ford’s Photographer.

Hollywood should make a Roman a Clef movie about his life. He was the Zelig of photographers in the 1970s; people who weren’t born then don’t realize how *refreshing* it was to have young (and) young-at-heart Betty Ford people in the White House after the Nixonian horror. And thank God the Vietnam War ended during his tenure.

Take a look at his Wikipedia entry, it’s really interesting:

Here’s my initial push-back tweet to Fournier and Thrush last night:

Hugs to you and enjoy the rest of your quiet…UT and others have got this covered. They’re amazing!

“They are totally insulated from public opinion on this because of redistricting. Republicans are gonna continue to hold the House. But then we’ll head into the 2016 presidential election where the electorate is likely to be 2 percent less white than it was in 2012 and 4 percent less white than it was in 2008. This is a simple math equation.”

    — GOP strategist Steve Schmidt, in an interview with the New York Times, on the harm House Republicans will do to the GOP’s national ambitions by not supporting immigration reform.

I’d go farther…it’s not just immigration reform that they’re isolated from, it’s the whole damn enchilada!

      Snowden and the paranoid state…

Paranoia is aggression masked as defense. It was paranoia (and hubris, and greed) that caused the run-up to the Iraq War; it is paranoia that leads to thousands of innocent Muslims being profiled in New York; it is paranoia that led to Trayvon Martin being shot to death on the street. In Congress, paranoia is less a style than a sickness, employed less with flourish than with fear. Paranoia is the refusal to recognise others except filtered through ourselves – and how do Americans see themselves? Afraid, afraid, afraid.

      Inteesting read…

There are suppositions in her piece that i would argue with her about…esp how she views PBO’s shortcomings …but her issues of why American are afraid are a good place to begin this discussion about privacy/security..

Snowden came of age in a paranoid era. The Bush administration was marked by twin delusions: 1) hysteria over terrorism, abetted by an insistence on defining reality contrary to evidence; 2) self-congratulation on triumphs never achieved, highlighted in Hurricane Katrina’s “heck of a job”, Iraq’s “mission accomplished”, and the bubble economy..

This @breakObama must be $$$-sponsored account by someone or some group who has enormous power over the Twitter CEO’s.

Because for whatever reason, this account is getting increasingly vile, doubling down in hate-speech, racist/misogynistic/homophobic slurs, and Twitter REFUSES to shut it down. This is beyond just “disgusting” right now. It’s getting to the point where Twitter risks it’s own reputation as an enabler of violence, hate speech and bigotry….

    • August 5, 2013 at 10:22 am

There really are no words for this Hopefruit – Twitter has always been completely fine with hate speech, never bans it, but this person has been making actual threats against Goldie, and as a public figure whose home address, I would imagine, can be easily found, it’s just astonishing nothing is being done. I’ve been out of the loop most of the last week, but checked Twitter today and I see lots of people saying this person should be ignored. I understand the logic, but actually I think this is too serious to be ignored – s/he needs to be identified and arrested.

    • August 5, 2013 at 10:27 am

Just checking Goldie’s timeline now, she says Lawscribe has identified the creep??

      • 36 hopefruit2
        August 5, 2013 at 10:31 am

Yes, the account has been traced back by Lawscribe to an individual with a white supremacist website – but something tells me that it’s more than just one person involved.

Between last night and this morning, the account had already changed it’s Twitter pics, intensified the antiObama, antiBlack hate speech, and doubled down on harassing Goldie – referring to her as a “porch monkey.”

Twitter cannot pretend to not know about this, and simply ignoring it is not a reasonable option at this point.

So it appears that that vile account @breakObama has been FINALLY suspended.

And I hate to say this, but it appears the only reason that it was banned was because Goldie, Lawscribe, and others did some of their own research and to expose some of this account’s connections and Republican roots. I guess Twitter decided at that point it wasn’t worth risking their reputation or the GOP’s reputation, but not because they were truly disturbed by the vile content and explicit threats coming from the account. All along they were content to stand by, watch and play indifferent – until the parties involved were exposed.

You know, I thought there was some mention of this account previously like a week or so ago. I didn’t know that it was suspended. But apparently, some new revelations about the source behind that account came out in the last 24-48 hrs. And it’s made real and explicit threats to harm someone. So I’m hoping this time the suspension will be not as easily appealed.

Ah, thanks Hopefruit. I wasn’t quite sure what happened in the last day or two, Lawscribe was being understandably careful about revealing what he found, I just hope the guy is dealt with by the police and that Twitter finally have the good sense not to ‘unsuspend’ that account. Indeed df. His article specifically references the drone issue. But so far, “holding PBO accountable” does not involve any proposition of new and/or better solutions on dealing with terrorist threats. For these self-appointed critics, “holding accountable” is all about hurling accusations, pushing insults based on sketchy or false information, and spreading Libertarian propaganda.

        • 88 nathkatun7

With respect to the drone issue, President Obama never promised not use drones to hunt down those intent on terrorizing innocent people. Holding pres Obama accountable is Fine. Holding pres Obama accountable out of context, out of what were the norm form yesteryears, out of precedents, ignoring history, raising the bar beyond the measuring scales used in judging the 43 predecessors before Mr. Obama, racializing pres Obama and demanding his papers, heritage and religion, then Not holding others in government at the same level of accountability are Once again……part of Otherizing this president. That is so freakingly Unfair and UnAmerican.

FDR, Truman, JFK, LBJ, Carter and Clinton all have More Dems in Congress than pres Obama. Only Clinton and pres Obama had lost their Majority in congress. Clinton lost both houses and pres Obama lost the lower chamber. The media was no longer doing it’s professional function by Jan 20, 2009.

So NBC and CNN are going to have a “Hillary” miniseries. Quite predictably, RNC chairman is “against” it. I’m so over all of this theatrical dances from both the RNC and the DLC corporate contingent. If Hillary is going to run for President in 2016, why are cable networks having a “Hillary” miniseries? Who is paying for this? Wouldn’t that be a conflict of interest? What about the other potential Dem candidates? And why is the MSM so invested in forcing Hillary down people’s throats before she even announces candidacy?

The Truth about Benghazi…..Linda wrote below. CNN keeps telling Us, that they don’t take sides?

HF2…..what the Media is doing is Not for Hillary Clinton’s benefit.

The media have had their fangs on the presidency of pres Obama…..they got up to the 9/10 “Obama’s Katrina”, then they moved on emoting, aloof, then, it was ‘lacking’ leadership….over his head, then it was…..this president doesn’t Lunch or build relationships, etc…..we all have heard them all. Then this year, it became……lack of accomplishments, then, Scandals……2nd term curse…..that started the night of the election on Nov 6, 2012. God forbid that pres Obama’s victory be discussed. Remember it was termed a weak victory……until facts, 5M votes and the indisputable 51% population votes victory and all the record setting numbers were overwhelmingly disputed for many in the the social media refuse to heed the media’s lies.

The media has tried to sink pres Obama and having failed are now on their way to make Clinton……unacceptable. Christie is their guy. That is the games being played now…….Clinton is being subjected to attacks, that by the time 2016 rolls in…..the Media would have won.

The truth about Benghazi is the CNN’s way of attacking Hillary Clinton, indirectly. Why is Benghazi being resurrected now in Aug 2013?

“HF2…..what the Media is doing is Not for Hillary Clinton’s benefit.”

I know that. It’s for the RNC’s benefit. But people who support Hillary are by and large okay with a GOP presidency if it is headed by someone like Chris Christie. They would have been fine with a Romney Presidency too.

The MSM is merely building Hillary Clinton up so they can tear her down. I think the GOP/MSM has some real dirt on Clinton (her or Bill) and will hold it until after she has the nomination. Trust that the MSM does not want a democrat to win the White House in 2016 (regardless of his/her race or gender).

      • 97 hopefruit2
        August 5, 2013 at 12:44 pm

That’s my point. The MSM knows that Hillary will NOT be a good candidate. But they want Democrats invested in her to the exclusion of other superior Democrats who would be REAL threats to the GOP. Hillary is no threat for the GOP and the RNC & MSM know that very well.

    • 98 donna dem 4 obama
      August 5, 2013 at 12:46 pm

Well Hillary is considered by the media to be one of the more powerful women in politics. Look, I’ve been an an “Obama supporter” well before people knew how to pronounce his name. We simply outsmarted and out-campaigned her team in 2008. We had a phenomenal candidate who inspired the nation and the world. If he had not run in 2008 we would more than likely have President HRC right now. The nation was sick of Bush and the Republicans and were eager for a change.

She and Bill said and did some pretty crappy and offensive things during that campaign but I cannot be blinded to the fact that she inspired 18 million women to vote in that primary year for her. May woman wanted (and still want) to see our gender elevated to the highest office in the land. She, just like like President Obama were historical candidates. We were going to make history either way so that in of itself was a compelling story. My issue with these mini-series is not exposes us to Hillary as much as I don’t believe they will be all that favorable to her. A lot of what she did in that campaign did not make her look good. From the people she hired to run her campaign to the incompetence with which her campaign didn’t care or know how the delegates would be distributed. Therefore putting zero emphasis on the caucuses. She felt privileged and that it was her turn. PBO won the Dem primary in March when he had gathered more than enough delegates to win the nomination as long as he picked up a portion of the delegates for the remaining campaign. She was frustrated by his charisma and inspiration from the start. Add this to the whole Monica scandal in the 90’s and however they tell the Benghazi story and I just don’t think she is going to be portrayed all that well.

I put no trust in the media. We know that they have their agenda as well!!!

      • 99 hopefruit2
        August 5, 2013 at 12:52 pm

Well that’s the thing donna. Either way it’s for the benefit of the GOP/RNC. Regardless of Reibus’s reaction to it. The MSM wants folks watching the series for whatever reason, but it’s not benefit the DEMS. It might also be to revive old wounds between Hillary and Obama supporters, thus dividing the Dem voters to help the GOP.

Either way, as I said, it’s not a wholesome agenda – it’s ultimately to help the GOP get back into office.

      • August 5, 2013 at 1:56 pm

I agree Donna. Those programs do not put Hillary Clinton in a very good light. I have seen them. I believe reverse psychology is in the works here. The RWNJs really want these programs seen.

Attention TODers on twitter. I would appreciate your advice. I never received an email from twitter explaining my suspension and as of today it has been 36 hours. I went to my twitter app….still 0 following and 0 followers…so I attempted to tweet something and I got a message to visit “help”. Apparently, Dudette and UT were right. The message at the help site says I was suspended for following too aggressively and that a disproportionate amount of users had either blocked me or reported me as spam. Guess my tweets struck a nerve with the RWNJs that gang up on folks they don’t like.
So…My question is this: There is a little box at the help page I was directed to that says “click here if you promise to behave” (I did nothing wrong!! Hands on hips and stomping foot) If I click that box does it count against me as a strike or anything? I would hate to cop to something I didn’t do and have it come back to haunt me but it is becoming obvious this may be the only way to lift my suspension. Oh! Does anyone know if I get my followers back? Pretty crazy that silly little ole me gets suspended yet a vile creature like @breakobama is allowed to spew his threats and racist hate. I follow many TODers, I’m @bluetexasmoon…many of you followed back 🙂

This info is getting out there – and that is why Twitter finally felt the need to ban this user. Their reputation was on the line here….

It’s interesting how the MSM is quick to point out the GOP’s so-called motivations where HRC is concerned, but are loathe to do the same for far more important issues where President Obama is concerned.

All of this is just advertisement for the miniseries, and the GOP/RNC is playing along… Sorry but I’m not buying any of it. Not the GOP’s reaction, not the cable news stations – they’re ALL in the game. The SAME game.

    More on that later….

WASHINGTON — The Republican National Committee wants NBC and CNN to cancel upcoming programs on Hillary Rodham Clinton and is threatening to blackball the networks from future Republican presidential debates if they fail to comply.

RNC chairman Reince Priebus (ryns PREE’-bus) calls the programs political ads “masquerading” as unbiased productions. He vows not to partner with the networks on GOP debates if they don’t pull the programs.

Clinton has not yet said whether she’ll run for president again in 2016.

Hillary will not a good president make.

    Sue me.

True, amk. But, reality is, she’s not going to run for President. All of this stuff is just fluffing egos and playing games and it’s truly pitiful to watch yet another ‘distraction’ consume so many folk when the real issues should be pursued relentlessly – jobs, halting voter suppression, crushing misogynists, ending the tyranny of the gun makers and merchants, etc.

She’s running, Bob. I’m sure of it. When was the last time you heard Hillary say, “Absolutely not.” Yeah, I thought so. Sometime in January 2009, methinks.

The ‘presidential haircut’, the youTube (?) release of her statement on marriage equality. I do not see her plugging her ears to the siren of inevitability – not with her ego.

As John Kerry continues to shine as SoS, I expect to hear ‘whispers’ that Hillary wasn’t able to do this and that as SoS because PBO wouldn’t let her. No fingerprints to trace, but this is what I expect to hear. Very subtle, very slow (subtle and slow not exactly a Clinton trait but no one learns the game better than they do).

I’ll be shocked if she doesn’t run.

You think you have a problem? I have to learn to accept Rooney if the transfer happens. I’m the one who needs the hugs. Hahahaha….it’s going to be soooooo weird.

Football is the one sport that takes one to cloud nine and then wham! slams one down. But it’s a bloody awesome sport.
