    We sure picked a winner!
Enjoy your well-deserved vacation with your family.

well done UT! Happy birthday Mr. President! 🙂

Thank you UT for all you are doing to keep TOD informative and fun as our dear Chips gets a bit of muchly deserved rest and relaxation.

From the bottom of the other thread ….

We are truly just beginning to end the Civil War … we will prevail and America will emerge much more closely aligned with it’s ideals and promise because we would not allow greed, racism, and misogyny to persist.

    Yes We Can

      Very well said Bob.

And I know that I just popped in but it’s Sunday and I gotta go to bed so Nitey Nite TOD! 😉

Bob, I pray with all my heart that we are reaching that goal. The hatred I’ve seen in these last five years has staggered me. I would not have believed that people in this country and especially in the United States Congress could act so vilely because of a president’s race. If this is the poisonous eruption we need in the process of healing, then we’ll all soldier on doing everything we can to move forward toward health. The more the ugly side of the US reveals itself, the harder we have to work to replace hate with love. I keep remembering the line from “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” about trampling out the vineyards where the grapes of wrath are stored. So much wrath and bigotry to trample out–the job never ends. But literally everything is at stake here–our own futures, the country we live in and any hope we have for a better world for our children. We have no choice but to win.

      • August 4, 2013 at 10:58 pm

JG I would never have believed that a PART of the USA would have us take a 60yr step back in time just because the President is Black and a Democrat and that the Republican congress and senators would us race hatred to further destroy our country. I grew up when Dr MLK gave his speech about judging people by the content of their character and Americans wanted to embrace that. Now it seems all bets are off it you are a Democrat or minority for some people. I am thankful for Stanley Ann to raising a wonderful human being who is now our 44th President. Happy Birthday President Obama.

I would assume, war mongering. Whenever McCain is not on Sunday TV, he is out in the world drumming up wars.
Then again, he appears to like to take his vacations with his bff. They sure pick strange places for time out from DC.

Just read the CNN report – makes no sense to me what the hell they are doing there. Have they joined the administration?

“House of Cards” star Kevin Spacey thinks President Barack Obama deserves more credit for what he’s accomplished.

“President Obama will go down as having passed some of the most historic bills in the history of this country,” Spacey told Hot Press magazine in a recent interview. “That despite constant knee-jerk opposition from the Republicans. A lot of people don’t realize how much he’s done in the most difficult of circumstances.”

As for Congress, Spacey is less impressed.

“It’s maybe interesting for an American audience that’s sat through the most non-productive Congress in the history of the United States, in terms of bills passed, to watch a fictional show [“House of Cards”] where some bills actually get passed,” he said.

You might have seen some of the speculation about possible Fed Chairman nominee front-runners. Stephanie Cutter has chimed in with her endorsement of Larry Summers. Have to say this is the first time I find myself disagreeing with her about anything..
I’m in the Anyone but Summers camp!

  39. 136 nathkatun7
    August 5, 2013 at 2:18 am

Dudette, am I mistake, here? Although this is a tweet from Stephanie Cutter, she is not the one personally endorsing Larry Summers. The endorsement in that piece is from Bradford DeLong, a U.C. Berkley professor that she is simply sharing. I didn’t see where she “chimed in with her endorsement of Larry Summers.” By the way, I found the professor’s ideas for why he favors Larry Summers quite reasonable. Prof. Delong also stated emphatically that he would have no problem if President Obama picked any one of the other five leading candidates. I’ve never understood why people are so passionately anti- Larry summers, one of the most brilliant economists and one of the people behind Bill Clinton’s success in creating record numbers of jobs.

    • 137 57andfemale
      August 5, 2013 at 8:23 am

Because he was a major leader in the deregulation of Wall St during the 1990’s, the repeal of Glass-Steagall and keeping derivatives free of regulation. He was far from a progressive economist, but was a DLC (right-of-center, business over workers) advocate. He is not responsible for the internet bubble which fueled job creation during the Clinton years – many of those jobs would have happened anyway. In context, the DLC movement was a way for Dem’s to shed the ‘tax and spend liberal’ banner, but in retrospect it did a lot of harm. Clinton could have reinstituted anti-trust, but instead put consolidation on steroids. He could have worked to strengthen manufacturing in the U.S., and instead led the charge to send manufacturing jobs overseas. Larry Summers was a huge proponent of all of these things. We can accurately say that many of the policies pushed by Larry Summers in the 1990’s, fueled and put on steroids during Bush/Cheney, led to the economic collapse. He’s a deficit hawk (which helped initially in the beginning of the Clinton administration, but more because it brought in tax revenue than slashing necessary spending).

I am interested to hear if he still supports those same policies. If he does, then I really don’t want another right wing hack leading the Fed. We need more balanced ideas than what we’ve been given since Greenspan. I don’t need or want a raving liberal economic loon at the Fed, but I do want a return to balance and sanity. Larry Summers will have to prove to me that he’s that man, because his record does not show that.
