    Hi TOD family!

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

My stepsister (actually former stepsister. Her dad and my mom are now divorced) came to visit. We played Scrabble and I won. 🙂 🙂

Now I’m going to watch Orange Is The New Black on Netflix. Anyone seen it yet? It’s very good so far.

    • August 3, 2013 at 10:04 pm

      I LOVE winning at Scrabble!!!!

I haven’t seen OTNB but everyone is raving about it. Let us know what you think!

      Enjoy your weekend.

Hello GB, Glad to see you’re in good spirits, and congrats on your winning Scrabble! 🙂 Hope you enjoy the movie all the way; I haven’t seen it yet.

      • August 3, 2013 at 10:32 pm

Thanks, hopefruit. It’s not a movie, it’s a series about a woman who was sentenced to 15 months in jail for her involvement with a drug cartel. I would say it’s a dark comedy. The subject of the show sounds cliche but its nothing like I’ve seen before.

Also, congrats on your Scrabble win! I kick booty in that game — it’s all about knowing the 2 and 3 letter words — and they are COMPLETELY legal.
You can look them up on line.

    Just the facts, mam

// After having read the documents that were declassified yesterday by the Obama administration on the telephone metadata program at NSA (here’s the FISA court order and the letters to Congress are here and here) we now know a few facts about it: …

…There are other requirements listed in these documents about the training that is required by analysts, that all queries must be auditable and that NSA has to report back to the FISA court on any telephone content of a US person that is accessed. But that should give you a pretty good idea of the safeguards that are in place.

It seems to me that only two questions about this program remain. First of all, does the government need to access all of the metadata (some are suggesting that the government require phone companies to store the metadata for NSA queries)? And secondly, how effective is this program? Those are policy and efficacy questions – not legal or constitutional.

When it comes to the question of Edward Snowden, lets remind ourselves of the legal definition of “whistleblowing.” The disclosure by a person, usually an employee in a government agency or private enterprise, to the public or to those in authority, of mismanagement, corruption, illegality, or some other wrongdoing. While discussions about policy and efficacy are important, his leaks have – to date – clearly not met that criteria. //

My opinion Edward Snowden belong in prison. And when Putin places his behind in there, he will be begging America to get him out and bring him back to the US.

    • August 4, 2013 at 8:49 am

Good point about the definition of whistleblowing and how Snowden doesn’t fit it. Not sure where all this Snowden-is-a-hero talk is coming from.

UT, thank you for all the videos on this post. “Team Obama” is very impressive indeed, geniuses and all that.
But it is the core of the man that made the team. Everyone being on one accord definitely made this happen.
POB can never be duplicated, replicated, imitated. The DNA will not allow it.
The respect and admiration they have for him is a pleasure to watch. The loyalty is truly commendable from the beginning until now.
I hope their friendship continues to grow in the years to come.

    This happened today:) http://www.politicususa.com/2013/08/03/alison-grimes-storms-fancy-farm-turns-mitch-mcconnell-paranoid-man.html

Alison Grimes began by talking about her long name and then said with your help Kentucky in January 2015 you can call me senator. Grimes said that she didn’t have to apologize for having more government experience than Rand Paul. She took a shot at Paul by pointing out that he wasn’t in Kentucky, he was spending his weekend with his loved ones, the tea party in Iowa. Grimes slammed McConnell for trying to gut Medicare. She said,”If the doctors told Sen. McConnell he had a kidney stone, he would refuse to pass it.” She hammered McConnell for being the most unpopular senator among both Democrats and Republicans.

All with a smile on her face, I’m sure! Oh, to be a fly on the wall!

“Republicans approve of the American farmer, but they are willing to help him go broke. They stand four-square for the American home–but not for housing. They are strong for labor–but they are stronger for restricting labor’s rights. They favor minimum wage–the smaller the minimum wage the better. They endorse educational opportunity for all–but they won’t spend money for teachers or for schools. They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine–for people who can afford them. They consider electrical power a great blessing–but only when the private power companies get their rake-off. They think American standard of living is a fine thing–so long as it doesn’t spread to all the people. And they admire of Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.”

Down under we do think the time of election campaigns in the US are somewhat long. While campaigns in the US are now underway for Nov 2014, and folks are already discussing 2016 – our recently appointed PM has just announced an election. Here is the timetable

2013 federal election timetable Announcement of election Sunday 4 August 2013
Issue of writ Monday 5 August 2013
Close of rolls 8pm Monday 12 August 2013
Close of candidate nominations 12 midday Thursday 15 August 2013
Declaration of candidate nominations 12 midday Friday 16 August 2013
Election day Saturday 7 September 2013
Return of writs (latest date) Wednesday 13 November 2013

People have 1 week to enroll – not really a drama as voting is compulsory – enrolling is relatively easy & the only folks who might be missing are recent 18 year olds and perhaps newly admitted citizens. It is rarely seen as a major issue.
We then have a 5 week campaign, government funded – everyone being sent crazy with TV ads & sadly more recently, robo phone call. As soon as I identify the party, I ring & tell them I will NEVER vote for someone who robocalls.

Our elections are always a Saturday, prepoll usually available, postal voting always available. Paper votes, hand counting. Result usually known within 3 hours of the poll closing.

There was much talk that Rudd wanted to go to the G20 – It is 5-6 Sept – so it seems neither he nor the current opposition leader will be able to go. Neither politician is very popular – it will be a “hold your nose and vote” election.

    • 135 Dudette
      August 4, 2013 at 10:35 am

Sounds wonderfully efficient, 99ts. Although we do bemoan the long slog that our election cycles represent, for me, I’m kinda glad the 2008 campaign cycle in particular was long enough for the less-informed members of the electorate to get to know that skinny guy with the funny name and “accept” him as the superior candidate.

A few things need to come together in order for our elections to work better:
      – Campaign finance reform to get $$$$ out of the money and eliminate legalized bribery aspect
      – A Supreme Court and legislatures (Federal & State) that value full voter participation – eliminating barriers to voting in the form of suppressive laws, gerrymandering and blocks to efforts to schedule elections and voting methods that encourage more people to vote
      – A journalism corps that feels a mandate to inform the public and focuses asking substantive questions rather than creating controversy or merely passing on spin
      – A citizenry that understands that voting is not only their right, but their civic duty; that steadfastly holds onto it, teaches young people about it and exercises that right with the seriousness t it deserves.

Thanks for posting these clips of the campaign reviews, UT.
What was so clear was the total disrespect for the President from Chuck Todd. He called everyone else by their titles e.g. Gov Romney, Gov Daniels (or called them Mitch and Hayley ,guess they are friend) and called the President …Obama.

    Chuck Todd is odious.
