Steve Benen: Economic growth exceeds expectations
Going into this morning, expectations for economic growth in the second quarter — April, May, and June of this year — were quite poor, making the actual GDP report a little more encouraging.
The U.S. economy grew at a 1.7% annual rate in the second quarter, buoyed by a solid gain in consumer spending and a sharp increase in business investment, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected growth to total 1.0%.
To be sure, 1.7% GDP growth is not, by any fair measure, good news. It tells us the economy is growing, but the recovery is at best sluggish. But given the news we were expecting, 1.7% is a relatively pleasant surprise, especially since the previous quarter’s growth was revised down to 1.1%.

Bloomberg: Economy in U.S. Expands More Than Forecast on Inventories
The economy in the U.S. grew more than projected in the second quarter, reflecting an unexpected pickup in inventory building as consumer spending cooled. Growth in the previous three months was revised down.
Gross domestic product, the value of all goods and services produced, rose at a 1.7 percent annualized rate, after a 1.1 percent gain the prior quarter, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. The median forecast of 85 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a 1 percent advance for last quarter. Consumer spending, the biggest part of the economy, climbed 1.8 percent after increasing 2.3 percent.
Job gains and rising home prices are shoring up Americans’ confidence and lifting automobile sales and production, making it likely the U.S. will pick up once government spending cuts and tax increases pose less of a restraint. The report also showed inflation is falling further below the Federal Reserve’s goal….

Steve Benen: Reality gets in the way of far-right shutdown scheme
As a large group of Republicans push for a government shutdown over the Affordable Care Act, Norm Ornstein offered some compelling context. “You could say it’s a do-nothing Congress but that doesn’t do justice to it,” he said. “These guys are doing something, which is to destroy the economic fabric of the country by holding the functions of government hostage to a non-negotiable demand to eliminate Obamacare.”
That’s plainly true, though Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), arguably the main ringleader of the scheme, apparently believes destroying the economic fabric of the country by holding the functions of government hostage to a non-negotiable demand to eliminate Obamacare is a fine idea. As Sarah Kliff reported, however, there is a flaw in the right-wing premise…..

Steve Benen: ATF finally poised to move forward with real leadership
Ask conservative opponents of gun reforms what they’d like to see from law enforcement, and you’ll probably get a predictable answer: we should enforce the gun laws we already have, not approve new ones. For the last several years, however, that’s been easier said than done.
Enforcement of existing gun laws generally falls under the purview of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which has lacked a permanent, Senate-confirmed leader for the last seven years, thanks to opposition from Republicans and the National Rifle Association, both of which have reflexively balked at the very idea of an ATF chief.
With this in mind, we may be poised for a breakthrough this week….

ThinkProgress: Texas Lawmakers Are Too Busy Focusing On Abortion Restrictions To Get Anything Else Done
Just over an hour after Texas legislators concluded their second special session — an extra lawmaking session they used to enact sweeping abortion restrictions — Gov. Rick Perry (R) called them back for a third one. An outstanding highway funding bill is the only item on the agenda. “When it comes to transportation, the stakes facing our state could not be higher,” the governor noted in a statement.
Perry cited that same transportation measure as one of the reasons he believed it was necessary to call the first special legislative session at the beginning of June. But instead of focusing on getting that done, the governor demonstrated a different set of priorities — adding a slew of anti-abortion provisions that were unable to advance during the state’s regular session to the docket.

Bob Cesca: Bradley Manning Lives in a Nation of Laws, and, Hero or Not, He Broke 16 of Those Laws
While fleeing from the law in Hong Kong, Edward Snowden encouraged a return to “the rule of law rather than men.” In spite of his politically incorrect usage of “men” instead of “men and women,” he’s right. Generally speaking, individual citizens shouldn’t be held above the law — least of all a soldier named Pfc. Bradley Manning who stole 720,000 classified documents and handed them over to be be indiscriminately posted for public consumption by Julian Assange’s Wikileaks.

Congrats Donna for your gold 😉
Please, if you can, could you send that Brilliant Tweet of yours to Grio and Joy Ann Reid? She was saying yesterday that pres Obama…..she always calls him….”Barack Obama:…..even though she worked for his campaign in 2008……I loathe it when she does that……..anyway, could you send her that tweet? Thanks. She was mistaken on her analysis on The Last Word last night. Thanks.
Morning all
Good morning, all!
Hi ya all. Bye ya all.
Oi! Why such a speedy departure?!
Cesca has a great column today on the aftermath of the Manning verdict. I am only posting the very end, but the whole thing is worth a read.
Reality is an inconvenient thing when you’re constructing a radical, histrionic agenda that paints Obama as an enemy of the free peoples of the United States. Sorry, Mr. Greenwald, there is no “war on whistleblowers.” There’s only the rule of law.
To that point, Manning and Snowden aren’t considered enemies of the state because Obama wants to institute martial law or to seize unaccountable executive power or to form a new American Stasi. Manning and Snowden violated a stack of laws. Snowden fled the country and has threatened to release documents that could “cause [more] harm to the U.S. government in a single minute than any other person has ever had.” These are actionable trespasses, and they don’t deserve to be pardoned just because a debate was ignited or because Greenwald thinks these men are the victims of an unjust war.
http://thedailybanter.com/2013/07/bradley-manning-lives-in-a-nation-of-laws-and-hero-or-not-he-broke-16-of-those-laws/
It should also be noted, that the charges actually related to real whistle-blowing, such as the release of the helicopter video, were charges for which Manning was acquitted because they were, well, actual whistleblowing. The rest wasn’t.
And by now I should have learned to actually read the post before adding something, since Chips already put this in her post. Still make sure you read it.
Confession: I only added the extract after seeing your comment, Japa – so your eyes are working perfectly fine!!
Does that make me a mini bt in abstentia?
It most certainly does, Mr Japa!
Chipsticks, I love that photo & caption.
DD4O, excellent tweet!
Thanks GGail!
No, not possible and not to be picky, but did Plouffe really use ‘their’ instead of ‘there’ in his tweet? Sorry, not trying to be the tweet grammar police. I know he knows so just had to comment. (ducking now)
That was exactly what I thought. That misusage and the messing up “your” for “you’re” are two of my pet peeves on twitter. because everyone knows I never make a tyop.
😆
I know right? My objection wasn’t personal at all, it’s just one of those things that my eyeballs gravitate to, then transmits this rebellion to my brain, which sends this itching sensation to my body, which makes my skin crawl. That’s all they’re is to it.
Nice chain of command their.
Yep, noticed that spelling first thing too! Just can’t help it. Chicago schools implanted good spelling in me back in the day….never lost it.
Yeah, I’m just hoping no one caught that preposition I left hanging at the end of my chain of command spiel.
Drives me CRAZY. And “its” and “it’s”.
Not to mention ‘then’ and ‘than’. I blame Obama!
OMG and here I thought only I was being an old fuddy-duddy retired schoolteacher when I groaned to myself over the mistake. Nice to know I have plenty of company.
First thing I thought of. Mr. Plouffe, delete that tweet!
I noticed it too…hoping it’s either too-quick-fingers and/or auto-correct. I know I’ve missed a typo many a time just as I’ve hit post/reply.
yep, it happens to the best of us. As long as we know that he knows, then no problem. I refuse to correct my typos or grammar mistakes, unless it changes the meaning of what I was attempting to say, or there’s no way the reader could possibly figure it out.
Great round-up Chiparoo.
Thank you very, very kindly legend!!
Hey Chiparoo, I just realized with the new powers you gave me, not only can I control everything on TOD and put anyone in spam, I can also put you in spam.
OOoooooooooo……you better watch out woman. Think about that whenever your fingers hover over the keyboard to insult the mighty Chelsea.
If Chipsticks disappears from TOD, you now know why TODers.
Careful, I have a hunch that Chips can undo what was done. As Bill Cospby said, but paraphrasing, “She brought into this blog and she can put you out.”
Funny, that’s what my mom would say to my brother and I when we were being bad 🙂
Greg Sargent of the Plum Line at the Washington Post did a phenomenal job taking down Ron Fournier…and Ron is whining on twitter about it. hehehehehe
Ostrich Punditry refuses to reckon with reality of today’s GOP
here is just a snip of the article:
“Fournier regularly derides “partisans” on both sides of this argument. But the refusal to apportion blame accurately — when the facts plainly merit assigning it overwhelmingly to one side, and not the other — is itself a form of partisanship and bias that impairs judgment and, in the end, misleads readers.”
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2013/07/31/the-morning-plum-ostrich-punditry-refuses-to-reckon-with-reality-of-todays-gop/
Ron Fournier is a GOP partisan. He is not fair and balanced in his coverage of political issues. In 2008, while still the AP bureau chief, he was in the running to be John McCain’s campaign manager. There is no mystery as to why he places all blame on PBO and gives the GOP a pass. Greg Sargent should have provided this background to his readers instead of pretending Fournier is impartial in his analysis. In short, it is foolish to expect any fair coverage of PBO from Fournier and Sargent should let his readers know why.
G’M Tod……Oh, I loooove that first picture with the wonderful PBO hug. What a hug! And it gets even better when you see the final close up
shot. Lucky lady.
Thanks for that tweet DD4O…I have been trying to do my part. Been working/volunteering on the Corey Booker campaign for some time now.
Phone-banking and whatever else they need done. We have pretty good candidates here in NJ to take over Lautenberg’s seat, Rush Holt being another one of them. So there is absolutely no reason to lose this seat to the GOP thugs. However as Scott Brown taught us, we can
never take anything for granted. So I will continue to do what I can..(.even though sometimes it feels like a drop in the large ocean) to get PBO the Congress he needs to get his vision realized.
Am also volunteering to get the word out about Obamacare. It’s stunning to realize that so many people do not have any idea about the new
Health Care law and its benefits. But as PBO says …each one tells one and the word will spread.
Have a great day everyone. We will be victorious in 2014. Let’s keep plugging away.
Hope44 I have been volunteering for the Corey Booker Campaign, too. I have been making calls in the Camden County Democratic Committee Headquarters in Cherry Hill. Where are you located? I’m going over there late this afternoon.
Great Rise & Shine Miss Chips. I was so taken by that HUGGY picture that I forgot my manners. 😀
Rand Paul put a bill before the Senate and I actually agree.
Cuts off Aid to Egypt until country holds elections; redirects 1.5B to bridge construction and repair.
I strongly agree With Paul, for once!
😦
You’re right, I do agree.
I am not sure if I agree with Rand Paul.
A broken clock is right twice a day.
A broke clock might be right twice a day, but Rand Paul isn’t a clock and I just don’t trust anything that comes out of that man’s mouth. Nothing.
I will wait to see what PBO does….
Me too PF.
Pretty Foot, I find President Obama’s reactions/stances/etc to be the best way to gauge anything. I trust his judgement more than just about anyone’s, especially the emoprogs and GOTPs.
Two facts to consider:
1) the next USA package to Egypt isn’t due until May. It is 1.5 Billion.
2) Saudi Arabia and UAE just gave Egypt 35 Billion in aid.
Rand Paul is looking for headlines, what’s new. Maybe his principle is ok but it is unnecessary at this point to voice an opinion. Let’s wait for POTUS.
While every penny that goes into infrastructure is welcome, 1.5B is a pittance compared to the 2.2T needed for deferred maintenance and new construction…
So, chips, you went on holiday to a cow pasture? I really like cows too—-they’re nice—-but it has never occurred to me to vacation with them. Have fun at your very unique bovine destination. Mooooooooo. 🙂
Drink Water!
I listen to POTUS speech yesterday, and the ones last week and I am glad to hear him go after the Republicans. I say it’s about time, because their is one thing I have known from the start that these Republicans do not want to work with him, that there are some Republicans who hate him and as Limbaugh said want to see him fail, even if the country suffers, they don’t give a dam, it’s all about stopping that black Obama. And by the way, if the Senate and House is having a month off, why the hell is President Obama only taking eight days off for vacation.
I hope FLOTUS and the girls stay in Martha Vineyard alittle longer. They probably won’t though cause school will be opening back up some time in August. I think.
They probably won’t but I hope they go to Camp David, even though they don’t really care for it.
Tell Mark Knoller not to worry, I’m sure he will get a slice or two of the cake.
At less he hope he does.
Happy Wednesday Everyone!! 😆 🙂 😆
Take your Camel to work day.
Now that’s funny anniebella 😆
I love, love love that commercial!! I crack up every time I see it and I’ve been retired since ’01. Hump day was almost better than Fridays cause Friday just signaled 2 hectic days ahead of catching up on personal stuff.

I’ve been teaching myself that new line dance from Robin Thicke’s new hit Blurred Lines. I’ve been having a ball getting my dance on the last few days. You would be proud!!
GF that is my all time favorite for getting one’s groove thang going! I went out with #2, which was the first time I’d been out for some time.
Suffice it to say that after the DJ played that song, I found #2 hiding under the table when I came back from the dance floor.
😳 OMG I am ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!! It took a minute for me to master that spin but you can’t tell me nothing now cuz I consider myself the queen of “blurred lines”

Hands off the naughty mats, we never know when one might have to succumb to an unanticipated swoon. I’m living proof of landing on the cold, hard floor after a thread pic that took me completely by surprise.
Take care and keep the inspirational posts coming. As you can see, I need all the help I can get.
Hi cookemom. I will need to go there myself. But I will just keep a count for Chips in case we run out. I know we will need plenty for this Sunday Birthday Bash. You know what I mean? HZ

Progress:
Cloture votes on Todd Jones (ATF) and Samantha Power (UN Ambassador) will take place at 2:00 p.m. today.
These are outside of that bargain on NLRB & the other nominees, right?
I think so but I’m not sure.
I was just trying to recall what happened to the nominations of Todd Jones and Samantha Power! Fingers crossed.
So in 2012….the economy grew at 2.8% GDP instead of 2.2%? No doubt the 1.1GDP for Q1 and this 1.8% GDP for Q2 would be revised upward in the future.

I know there are a lot of grammar hawks here, but please give @DavidPlouffe a *break*.
Where would we be if he hadn’t brought his boss’s No Drama credo to his 2008 Campaign Manager duties? I love Plouffe, and it’s probably embarrassing for him to have his mistake RT’d in the virtual world.
I don’t watch Univision, but here’s last Friday’s front page of the Los Angeles Latino newspaper (in the middle, above-the-fold):
And here’s info on Univision’s mid-July ratings from a couple of weeks ago:
I decided to give David Plouffe the “silent editor” treatment! Love him, and I don’t care how he spells!
I don’t think anyone was trying to give Plouffe a hard time. I know I wasn’t. If you read our posts we talked about how misspelled words affected us. It was mentioned specifically because Plouffe is our guy and we know it. I don’t tweet, so I wouldn’t know anything about it being retweeted. Do you honestly think he cares about people saying anything about what we know was an honest mistake? He’s drama free and a little dust up over spelling probably doesn’t even cause a blip on his radar.
Hi, Chips! Hi, TODville!
“City embraces Obama” = World embraces Obama! Heck, I’d embrace him if I were anywhere close. (Oops.)
Love this post and all that’s in it, Chips!
I’m glad he was treated with respect on his visit there, that’s the main thing.
Yes, I totally agree, anniebella. That turned out to be a very positive visit. Tennesseans should be proud – at least the Democrats in TN!
Agree. Because I had heard all about what the tea party was planning.
Luckily, I missed that, but I can only imagine. The tea party is a HORRIBLE segment of our society.
The KKK without the hoods. That is the tea party.
I’m guessing some of them wear the hoods at night, when they think nobody’s watching. Definitely Rand Paul and his crowd.

Morning! Fascinating doc from the Dallas Fed regarding the financial meltdown of 2007…. and the effects on business, the public, trust in govt…etc.
Click to access staff1301.pdf
That report was linked from this story about the costs of the financial crisis: http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2013/07/31/2387161/cost-of-financial-crisis/
When the housing bubble popped, dragging down the global economy with it, it was clear that much was lost. But figuring out just how much in dollar terms is a difficult task. A new report from the Federal Reserve of Dallas attempts to do just that and estimates that the country lost 40 to 90 percent of one year’s economic output was lost, depending on assumptions about what growth would have been without a crisis, which comes to somewhere between $6 trillion and $14 trillion in 2012 dollars lost thanks to the 2007-2009 recession. That means about $50,000 to $120,000 per household.
The report gets to this figure by assuming that the crisis is to blame for an enormous loss of economic output, a big decline in people’s wealth, negative effects of unemployment such as skills atrophying, an increase in government spending to stem the crash, and other costs.
The authors note, however, that this is a conservative figure that leaves out many factors. The psychological consequences were very negative but hard to quantify, and other less tangible consequences mean that the cost is likely higher than just one year’s economic output.
How ironic that those supporting less regulation, less govt and oversight…actually enabled this and caused the very response that they deride.
Was this posted already?? Still waking up. Rough night with snorer in chief
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-07-31/companies-in-u-s-added-more-workers-in-july-than-forecast-1-.html
Companies in the U.S. boosted payrolls in July by the most this year as employers grew more optimistic demand will pick up in the second half of the year.
The 200,000 increase in employment was more than projected and followed a revised 198,000 gain in June that was higher than initially estimated, according to data today from the ADP Research Institute in Roseland, New Jersey. The median forecast of 40 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a July advance of 180,000.
Job gains, higher stock prices and rising home values are shoring up Americans’ confidence, helping counter the effects of this year’s government spending cuts and giving a boost to U.S. growth. Federal Reserve policy makers, wrapping up a two-day meeting today, are evaluating progress on growth and employment as they consider whether to trim their record monetary stimulus.
“The job market has admirably weathered the fiscal headwinds, tax increases and government spending cuts,” Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics Inc., in West Chester, Pennsylvania, said in a statement. Moody’s produces the figures with ADP. “This bodes well for the next year when those headwinds are set to fade.”

For no reason——semi interesting to read biographies—–the Hill’s 50 Most Beautiful in D.C., “beautiful” being relative. After a horrible #1, Jeff Flake—-ewwwww——I did note that most were Democrats. Of course.
http://thehill.com/50-most-beautiful-2013/?n=1
Sen. Durbin said that those House Republicans are taking another vote on repealing Obamacare. Can you believe them?
JEFF FLAKE????????????? WHAT A CREEPER! OMG.
I am sorry to say but how the hell did Jeff Flake get to be number 1. And shouldn’t we stop judging people on what they look like so much. How about judging them on the content of their character. Some times we get all hot and heavy when we see a nice looking person, I’m guilty of that myself, but I should say to myself yes they look fine, but what kind of person are they, what do they stand for? If Anthony Weiner and that Mayor of San Deigo have showed us that a person character matters too. It really does. By the way Sam Kass looks better than Sen. Flake.
Forgive me for just doing alittle preaching and then sinning too.

HP is crying foul about PBO’s remarks about his support of Summers and how he dares to bash HP.
Sen. Reid just said he has no problem with Larry Summers, some of the caucus might, but the decision is up to the President and who ever the President choose they will support him or her.
So forget Huff Puff.
never mind I guess HP was relying on pure conjecture and not from his own lips.

Ever since Ms. Huff Puff sold out to AOheLl, the site has gone downhill. When she announced the takeover, a lot of long time posters quit and left, they knew it would be bad.
Too bad, because it was a really great place to go for one-stop-shopping.
GOP establishment going after Paul on more fronts. Today, McMyLegacyNeedsAttention went after him for his comments on the Middle East. Christie and Paul have the ‘great bacon feud’ going. The establishment is nipping Paul in the bud, before the RWNJs really start to idolize him and join forces with the Libertarians. I’d suggest Cruz start laying low too, he’s next.
Cookemom, I love your description of McCain. I am ROTFL.

http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/msnbcs-roberts-calls-weiner-sexting-companion-sydney-leathers?ref=fpblg
MSNBC host Thomas Roberts stopped himself on air Wednesday after calling Sydney Leathers, the woman who traded sexts with New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, “batshit.”
Roberts played a clip of Leather’s interview with Howard Stern’s radio show, in which she explained how Weiner “lured her in” to the sexting situation.
“This chick is so batshit you know –” Roberts said before stopping himself. “Excuse me. But Leathers is reportedly considering a porn deal now. So that’s why I say that this whole thing is such a big mess.”
Watch:
Weiner overload, my ears bleed. If the MSM would please stop covering it, some actual reporting my accidentally come about. Tying it to SOSH is probably even more the dumb.
Cookemom, I know what you mean. Not that he was my favorite person but fellow Dems are joining the bashing. Wouldn’t it be ironic if he won after all of this, but I am sure he won’t win. This is borderline Rev. Wright stuff, the way it is being covered.
Actions planned in support of immigration reform for the month of August:
STRONG MOMENTUM AS PRO-IMMIGRATION FORCES SWEEP INTO AUGUST RECESS
While Anti-Immigrant Forces Will Make Some Noise, In-District Action to be Driven by Pro-Reform Majority
Ahead of the impending August recess, pro-immigration forces are on the move with hundreds of grassroots events planned from coast to coast. A number of media outlets today highlight the momentum, unprecedented organization, and breadth of support on behalf of immigration reform with a path to citizenship. From business and tech groups to labor and faith organizations; Republican donors and conservative strategists to immigration advocates and the labor movement, it is clear that key House targets will feel the urgency behind scheduling a vote on a path to citizenship for aspiring Americans this fall.
