Steve Benen: Economic growth exceeds expectations
Going into this morning, expectations for economic growth in the second quarter — April, May, and June of this year — were quite poor, making the actual GDP report a little more encouraging.
The U.S. economy grew at a 1.7% annual rate in the second quarter, buoyed by a solid gain in consumer spending and a sharp increase in business investment, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected growth to total 1.0%.
To be sure, 1.7% GDP growth is not, by any fair measure, good news. It tells us the economy is growing, but the recovery is at best sluggish. But given the news we were expecting, 1.7% is a relatively pleasant surprise, especially since the previous quarter’s growth was revised down to 1.1%.

Bloomberg: Economy in U.S. Expands More Than Forecast on Inventories
The economy in the U.S. grew more than projected in the second quarter, reflecting an unexpected pickup in inventory building as consumer spending cooled. Growth in the previous three months was revised down.
Gross domestic product, the value of all goods and services produced, rose at a 1.7 percent annualized rate, after a 1.1 percent gain the prior quarter, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. The median forecast of 85 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a 1 percent advance for last quarter. Consumer spending, the biggest part of the economy, climbed 1.8 percent after increasing 2.3 percent.
Job gains and rising home prices are shoring up Americans’ confidence and lifting automobile sales and production, making it likely the U.S. will pick up once government spending cuts and tax increases pose less of a restraint. The report also showed inflation is falling further below the Federal Reserve’s goal….

Steve Benen: ATF finally poised to move forward with real leadership
Ask conservative opponents of gun reforms what they’d like to see from law enforcement, and you’ll probably get a predictable answer: we should enforce the gun laws we already have, not approve new ones. For the last several years, however, that’s been easier said than done.
Enforcement of existing gun laws generally falls under the purview of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which has lacked a permanent, Senate-confirmed leader for the last seven years, thanks to opposition from Republicans and the National Rifle Association, both of which have reflexively balked at the very idea of an ATF chief.
With this in mind, we may be poised for a breakthrough this week….

ThinkProgress: Texas Lawmakers Are Too Busy Focusing On Abortion Restrictions To Get Anything Else Done
Just over an hour after Texas legislators concluded their second special session — an extra lawmaking session they used to enact sweeping abortion restrictions — Gov. Rick Perry (R) called them back for a third one. An outstanding highway funding bill is the only item on the agenda. “When it comes to transportation, the stakes facing our state could not be higher,” the governor noted in a statement.
Perry cited that same transportation measure as one of the reasons he believed it was necessary to call the first special legislative session at the beginning of June. But instead of focusing on getting that done, the governor demonstrated a different set of priorities — adding a slew of anti-abortion provisions that were unable to advance during the state’s regular session to the docket.

Reality is an inconvenient thing when you’re constructing a radical, histrionic agenda that paints Obama as an enemy of the free peoples of the United States. Sorry, Mr. Greenwald, there is no “war on whistleblowers.” There’s only the rule of law.
To that point, Manning and Snowden aren’t considered enemies of the state because Obama wants to institute martial law or to seize unaccountable executive power or to form a new American Stasi. Manning and Snowden violated a stack of laws. Snowden fled the country and has threatened to release documents that could “cause [more] harm to the U.S. government in a single minute than any other person has ever had.” These are actionable trespasses, and they don’t deserve to be pardoned just because a debate was ignited or because Greenwald thinks these men are the victims of an unjust war.

It should also be noted, that the charges actually related to real whistle-blowing, such as the release of the helicopter video, were charges for which Manning was acquitted because they were, well, actual whistleblowing. The rest wasn’t.

Ron Fournier is a GOP partisan. He is not fair and balanced in his coverage of political issues. In 2008, while still the AP bureau chief, he was in the running to be John McCain’s campaign manager. There is no mystery as to why he places all blame on PBO and gives the GOP a pass. Greg Sargent should have provided this background to his readers instead of pretending Fournier is impartial in his analysis. In short, it is foolish to expect any fair coverage of PBO from Fournier and Sargent should let his readers know why.

Phone-banking and whatever else they need done. We have pretty good candidates here in NJ to take over Lautenberg’s seat, Rush Holt being another one of them. So there is absolutely no reason to lose this seat to the GOP thugs. However as Scott Brown taught us, we can
never take anything for granted. So I will continue to do what I can..(.even though sometimes it feels like a drop in the large ocean) to get PBO the Congress he needs to get his vision realized.
Am also volunteering to get the word out about Obamacare. It’s stunning to realize that so many people do not have any idea about the new
Health Care law and its benefits. But as PBO says …each one tells one and the word will spread.

2) Saudi Arabia and UAE just gave Egypt 35 Billion in aid.

I listen to POTUS speech yesterday, and the ones last week and I am glad to hear him go after the Republicans. I say it’s about time, because their is one thing I have known from the start that these Republicans do not want to work with him, that there are some Republicans who hate him and as Limbaugh said want to see him fail, even if the country suffers, they don’t give a dam, it’s all about stopping that black Obama. And by the way, if the Senate and House is having a month off, why the hell is President Obama only taking eight days off for vacation.
I hope FLOTUS and the girls stay in Martha Vineyard alittle longer. They probably won’t though cause school will be opening back up some time in August. I think.

I don’t think anyone was trying to give Plouffe a hard time. I know I wasn’t. If you read our posts we talked about how misspelled words affected us. It was mentioned specifically because Plouffe is our guy and we know it. I don’t tweet, so I wouldn’t know anything about it being retweeted. Do you honestly think he cares about people saying anything about what we know was an honest mistake? He’s drama free and a little dust up over spelling probably doesn’t even cause a blip on his radar.

When the housing bubble popped, dragging down the global economy with it, it was clear that much was lost. But figuring out just how much in dollar terms is a difficult task. A new report from the Federal Reserve of Dallas attempts to do just that and estimates that the country lost 40 to 90 percent of one year’s economic output was lost, depending on assumptions about what growth would have been without a crisis, which comes to somewhere between $6 trillion and $14 trillion in 2012 dollars lost thanks to the 2007-2009 recession. That means about $50,000 to $120,000 per household.
The report gets to this figure by assuming that the crisis is to blame for an enormous loss of economic output, a big decline in people’s wealth, negative effects of unemployment such as skills atrophying, an increase in government spending to stem the crash, and other costs.
The authors note, however, that this is a conservative figure that leaves out many factors. The psychological consequences were very negative but hard to quantify, and other less tangible consequences mean that the cost is likely higher than just one year’s economic output.
How ironic that those supporting less regulation, less govt and oversight…actually enabled this and caused the very response that they deride.

The establishment is nipping Paul in the bud, before the RWNJs really start to idolize him and join forces with the Libertarians. I’d suggest Cruz start laying low too, he’s next.

MSNBC host Thomas Roberts stopped himself on air Wednesday after calling Sydney Leathers, the woman who traded sexts with New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, “batshit.”
Roberts played a clip of Leather’s interview with Howard Stern’s radio show, in which she explained how Weiner “lured her in” to the sexting situation.
“This chick is so batshit you know –” Roberts said before stopping himself. “Excuse me. But Leathers is reportedly considering a porn deal now. So that’s why I say that this whole thing is such a big mess.”
