The latest state to publish insurance rates under Obamacare is Maryland. The results seem consistent with the pattern we’ve seen so far. When state officials want the law to work, it works pretty well. And Maryland officials want the law to work.
The governor is a prominent Democrat and among Obamacare’s most vocal boosters. The state political establishment supports him. The officials in agencies working on Obamacare — the state Department of Health, the Insurance Administration, and the newly created Health Benefits Exchange — feel the same way. None of this is surprising: Maryland is a strongly blue state. Obama is popular there and, one imagines, so is his health plan.

The face of the nation is changing fast, but the White House press corps remains the same.
A new report in The Washington Post details how the news media, and especially the White House press, is disproportionately whiter and less diverse than the country as a whole.
“When the first black president of the United States walked into the White House press room to talk about Trayvon Martin and the complexities of race in America last Friday, the people poised to convey his remarks to the world were overwhelmingly of one race — white….

David Firestone (NYT): North Carolina: First in Voter Suppression
Gov. Pat McCrory of North Carolina didn’t like our recent editorial that criticized the state for abandoning its traditions of racial equality, strong public schools, and economic fairness. He wrote a letter to the editor saying he was leading the state to a “powerful comeback.”
That’s demonstrably untrue when it comes to the economy and the schools. But as yesterday’s events in the state capital showed, one thing is making a comeback: an old habit of suppressing the votes of minorities, young people and the poor, all in the hopes of preserving Republican power.
Freed of federal election supervision by the Supreme Court, the North Carolina legislature passed a bill that combines every idea for suppressing voter turnout that Republicans have advanced in other states. Rick Hasen, an election-law expert at the University of California, Irvine, called it “the most sweeping anti-voter law in at least decades.”
…. None of this has anything to do with fraud. Out of 7 million ballots cast in the state in 2012, there were 121 allegations of voter fraud, a rate of .00174 percent….

NBC News: The United States intends to transfer two additional detainees from Guantanamo Bay to Algeria as part of its effort to close the military prison in Cuba, the White House said Friday in a statement.
“We are taking this step in consultation with the Congress, and in a responsible manner that protects our national security,” the statement from White House spokesman Jay Carney read. “We continue to call on Congress to join us in supporting these efforts by lifting the current restrictions that significantly limit our ability to transfer detainees out of Guantanamo, even those who have been approved for transfer.”

Sy Mukherjee: Starting next Thursday, Wisconsin’s Green Bay region will no longer have an abortion provider. That’s because Ob/Gyn Associates, the sole abortion clinic in the area, was recently sold to a health system which announced on Friday that it will stop offering abortion services on August 1st. And their decision, combined with an anti-abortion bill quietly signed into law by Gov. Scott Walker (R) earlier in July, will force Green Bay women who want or need an abortion to travel over 250 miles round trip to find the closest facility.
Practically speaking, the law would force two of the state’s five clinics — a private clinic in Milwaukee and a Planned Parenthood facility in Appleton — to close down entirely.

Josh Israel: Since Attorney General Eric Holder’s announcementThursday that the Department of Justice would “ask a federal court in Texas to subject the State of Texas to a preclearance regime similar to the one required by Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act,” the reaction from Texas Republicans has been furious. But Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI), who sponsored the 2006 Voting Rights Act re-authorization, backed the move as legally proper.
But Sensenbrenner told The Hill on Thursday that these critics were misrepresenting the facts. “The [Justice] department’s actions are consistent with the Voting Rights Act,” he said, noting that Voting Rights Act still allows challenges to changes that would suppress minority voters.

Isn’t it stunning——what’s going on with voting rights and womens’ rights in all these Repub controlled states? It seems to get worse by the day with new restrictions continuing unabated. Repubs are trying to change our country one state at a time, taking away much of what has been taken for granted for decades. The consequences of Dems not bothering to show up to vote in 2010 has been catastrophic. I’m hoping that 2014 can bring much of this to a screeching halt.

This just gets me so angry with people who were too lazy to vote, or too upset that the president and Democratic Congress didn’t get things done fast enough.
Dotster, we have to come out in record numbers in 2014 because most of our states can’t take four more years of the reactionaries in their state governments. There will come a reckoning for this destruction of our rights. This is the last gasp of a dying party and their effort to bring the world down with them has to be reversed. They have gone too far. They have shown their hand and people are recoiling in revulsion.

I am so happy that the President is going to the Korean War Memorial today to commemorate the truce. This means a lot to us, because my husband served in Korea. My family lived in San Francisco at the time which was the gateway for deployment to Korea. I was in junior high, and my whole family went to Land’s End to watch the fleet come home under the Golden Gate Bridge, which was a sight I’ll never forget as those big ships steamed in one at a time, in a seemingly endless row.
Three years ago we went to D.C. and visited the Korean Memorial, one of the major things on my bucket list. It is haunting. I took my husband’s picture standing beside one of those poncho clad soldier statues. I was so proud. A young man came up to me while I was snapping and asked why I was taking his picture beside the statue. I looked up, and said “Because he served there!”
After the picture, several people went up to him and thanked him for his service. He said that was the first time that had happened in over fifty years. That visit meant a lot to him, and to me, and this honoring of the Korean War and truce by the president today, means a great deal to him.
We’ve often laughed at life and its funny turns. Here I was a girl in junior high, as he was an Airman who shipped out from Treasure Island on a troop ship bound for Tokyo! To this day, he will not even consider a cruise!!!
Thank you for those wonderful memories Carolyn; and please tell your husband that we at TOD are so thankful and grateful for his service. 😀
Beautiful memory and heartwarming story Carolyn. My memory was of a soldier who boarded with us when he was on leave from the Army. On his final return from the war he brought my mother a beautiful Korean traditional dress which I still have to this day. We all have treasured memories which are made more powerful when they are honoured and valued through public recognition.
carolyn – I’ve been watching the commemoration, and President Obama – as he speaks so eloquently, now – with tears welling up in my eyes. I’d like to pass on my personal thanks to your husband and all of the others who served in Korea. We will not forget them. Please tell your husband, “Welcome home.”
Thank you for telling us about this, Carolyn. The Korean War veterans were never given the credit they were due because it wasn’t the “big war,” although many of them had served in both. Yet Korea war was just as traumatic and dangerous for our servicemen as any war fought. I’m glad that someone finally thanked your husband for his service. It’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference. And today, the President of the United States is saying ‘thank you” in a big way.

Lindy Boggs took over the House seat of Rep. Hale Boggs who was missing and presumed dead in a plane crash in Alaska back in the 60s. She is the mother of Cokie Roberts of NPR.
She also had a son, and was the mother of the late Barbara Boggs Sigmund (who was once Mayor of Princeton, New Jersey – I’m from Central NJ originally and remember that local connection well).

Okay maybe I heard wrong, but I will check it out.
I just learned about another tragic story that involves a gun, that has touched my church community deeply.
The husband of an old friend of mine from church was shot twice in the back of the head and killed yesterday, by a colleague over disputed land. The shooter (89 years old) said that “he snapped” during an argument with my friend’s husband (58 years old with two teenage boys) and pulled the gun out from his pocket and shot him. I note that the shots were IN THE BACK of his head.
The deceased man’s wife has struggled with breast cancer over the last 6-8 years, and I’m just devastated for her.
Please pray for Jodi and her family as she starts this morning realizing yesterday wasn’t just a nightmare, but that her husband is gone.
Lord help us.

The irony, of course, is that 89 year old may well have had his driver’s license revoked or at least requires regular testing to get it renewed, yet has to do nothing to keep a gun.

The photo of the young man from the American Legion boy’s group clutching and hanging on to PBO brings tears to my eyes because someone who hugs like that has been through something. It somewhat reminds me of the poignant photo of Sasha holding onto her dad when they visited Mandela’s cell on Robben island.
The faces and responses of all the other boys is just priceless, it feels as if all their lives will be touched and changed for the better from being in this scenario, so vast is the Love and Compassion our President shares with all.
I bet the he raised his hand and said, “Mr. President, I just want to hug you!”.

Awwww—-people are nice. It’s my daughter’s moving day today, and everyone has been sad and hosting “last events” in their Chgo neighborhood. Last night they stopped at their neighborhood cleaners they have frequented for one last pick up, and when they told the Turkish owner they were moving today. his eyes actually welled up and he went in the back and brought out a beaded bracelet for my daughter “to remember him by”. Isn’t that so sweet?
I think it says a lot about your daughter and family, as well as their neighborhood!
(On an unrelated note, the one thing I definitely don’t miss about working in an office is all of the dry cleaning bills. Seemed like I spent one-third of my damn profit handing over my whole closet to those folks!)

Welcome to Texas, where Republican leadership hasn’t lowered our electric bill, our insurance rates, our college tuition, or our taxes, but they have done one helluva job lowering our standard of living.
Citing a funding shortfall and the impact of a historic oil drilling boom, Texas Department of Transportation officials on Thursday announced plans to move forward with converting some roads in West and South Texas to gravel.
Approximately 83 miles of asphalt roads will be torn up and converted to “unpaved” roads, TxDOT Deputy Executive Director John Barton said. The speed limits on those roads will probably be reduced to 30 mph.
???? how ’bout that INFRASTRUCTURE SPENDING, RICK!!! Bet that Texans will just LOVE this! Rip up the pavement and put gravel on the road instead. Yup. I’m sure they will….
Yikes, DF, in addition to the reduced speed, those roads are murder on tires and on the undersides of cars. My sister lives at the end of a very long gravel road and we never get to her house with scarring the bottom of our car. I IMMEDIATELY thought the very same thing! Stupid, for sure…they have such short term thought processes….always, in every case. This is a prime example.
Soon, we will be riding horse and buggy and Liberals will blame this President for not consulting Harry Potter!
And if this doesn’t prove to the area residents they are considered unimportant and irrelevant, as well as moving backwards in time, what will? Hopefully they will become very very pissed off. It takes a long time to get anywhere driving that slow on those surfaces, which requires a whole new outlook and planning. If there are any kind of tourist attractions there, no one will bother to drive across gravel roads to see them.
Thanks, DF for this. I fought my city council for two years when they a R-Rep. would not allow any monies from the Recovery Act to come to our city. When you looked at where the money was not be asked for, it broke my heart. I finally called the Rep., and gave him some thoughts. He was not interested because he did not want to give any credit to POB and VP Biden. I went off on him, they clicked the call.
He has retired. A very ugly spirit.
Everytime I drive down some of the roads, I do not pray, if you know what I mean. However, when I reach home, I do confess and try to clear my space. It is awful , but we will get the House back. I will give my all to help us do that. The Rep. was David Drier. Remember him. Sorry behind.HZ

There is Congressional Oversight re: all this classified info…but Congress as a body is dysfunctional…ex: the House is entertaining making food stamp recipients work for their food stamps….
When I think about how WE THE PEOPLE should be engaged in our government…it gives me pause at how much WE THE PEOPLE are not….
