VP Biden in India….

US Vice President Joe Biden in India, will focus on trade, security

New DelhiUS Vice President Joe Biden arrived in India on Monday on a trip that will focus on boosting trade and regional security ties and strengthening a strategic partnership that has languished in recent years.

Biden’s four-day visit, which will include a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, is viewed as a major step in promoting President Barack Obama’s focus on forging strong partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region aimed at counterbalancing China’s power.

NEW DELHI — Secretary of State John Kerry called Monday for a bilateral investment treaty with India, and said he would like to see the two countries fully embrace a nuclear energy deal that has so far frustrated U.S. companies.

Kerry, in India for the fourth round of the India-U.S. Strategic Dialogue, a mechanism started in 2009 to strengthen ties, also said that New Delhi could play a greater role in negotiations with Afghanistan and Iran, adding that Washington would protect India’s back in Afghan developments.

“The secretary has said he will ensure that none of the concerns of India are overlooked or undermined,” Indian Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid said at a joint news conference after the talks.

NEW DELHI — US Vice President Joe Biden arrived in India on Monday for a four-day visit designed to revive flagging diplomatic ties and fire up bilateral trade.

Biden, the first US vice president to visit India in three decades, will meet senior leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday before heading to the financial hub Mumbai to deliver a keynote speech on the economy.

Biden, accompanied by his wife Jill, landed in New Delhi shortly after 5 pm (1130 GMT), and immediately visited a museum in the capital dedicated to independence hero Mahatma Gandhi.

“What a high honor and great privilege to be here in this sacred spot — memorializing one man who changed the world,” he wrote in the visitors’ book at Gandhi Smriti, the revered place where Gandhi’s life ended on January 30, 1948.

Oh Zimmerman emerges from hiding to help overturned vehicle. Now the media of course is turning him into some kind of hero, it still doesn’t change the fact that he’s a murderer.

I wonder what Trayvon might have done for his Fellow Man had he not been stalked and murdered for the crime of walking home while black.

They must really think some people are as stupid as Zimmerman fans. Nothing will change the fact that he profiled, stalked and murdered an unarmed black teenager.

Why would anyone think that it is funny to disparage and ridicule the birth of a healthy child? Why would anyone not be able to find in their heart any joy for someone who has suffered tragedy and loss in their life? Reminds me of Teabaggers…full of anger and hate for those that are not like them. My Mama always told me, “If you can’t say anything nice, then it’s best to keep your mouth closed”

Anyone who ridicules and disparages the birth of a child as a form of humor…..it seems that shows a cold heart full of anger and hate which reminds me of Teabaggers….twitter is full of it.

          July 22, 2013 at 5:34 pm

Okay, you need to be more specific about what prompted you to say this. Because I don’t see any one disparaging the birth of the child. Sounds to me like you mistakenly assumed that some folks who were mocking the media’s coverage were ridiculing the birth of the baby.

    • July 22, 2013 at 5:12 pm

I don’t see anyone disparaging the baby, Kathryn, just the media nonsense that surrounds the non-story and the unelected parasites that are the Royal family. If 1% of the coverage was given to issues that actually matter, that would be great.

    • 47 57andfemale
      July 22, 2013 at 5:15 pm

I think a lot off these tweets are meant to mock the press coverage, NOT the birth itself. The wall-to-wall coverage is absurd, when there is barely a mention of the fact that Biden is in India, Kerry is setting up ME peace talks, and PBO made one of the best speeches ever on race showing extraordinary personal experience together with meaningful policy.

And my twitter feed has moved on to actual news.

      • 48 Mellesia Barnett
        July 22, 2013 at 5:26 pm

What makes the coverage ridiculous is that there is no additional details to report and they keep reporting the same information over and over I think its time to move on to other news

    • 51 kathryn kivett
      July 22, 2013 at 5:51 pm

The media is only doing what the media always does…..after a week of coverages of the tragedy of Trayvon Martin trial(yes I meant that the way you read it for they put that young man on trial) and people being murdered, and fires and violence in Egypt and taking away voting rights from African Americans and women’s health rights and Cornel West, Tavis Smiley, Hannity, and all the others bashing PBO every time he sneezes, actually I find it refreshing to have a break even if it is over the top and becoming boring….at least it’s happy news for a change.

    • July 23, 2013 at 12:33 am

I have a FB friend I keep only because she’s family. Don’t let anyone else see her posts though. She posted that the only way she could be interested iin Royal Baby is if it had two heads. She posts a lot of teabaggers stuff and hatred for Pres. Obama and support for Zimmerman and Snowjob. But this was so tasteless. I had all I could do to keep my hands from typing about abortion and if she would have preferred that for Kate. She seems full of hatred for anyone who doesn’t think her exact thoughts. She has no kids of her own. She does seem to love her hubby and dog. SMH. I’m happy for the couple. Every baby should be welcomed into the world and sent good thoughts.

Al Qaeda prison break: Hundreds of militants flee Iraq’s notorious Abu Ghraib jail

The deadly raid on the high-security jail happened as Sunni Muslim militants are re-gaining momentum in their insurgency against the Shiite-led government that came to power after the U.S. invasion to oust Saddam Hussein.

Suicide bombers drove cars packed with explosives to the gates of the prison on the outskirts of Baghdad on Sunday night and blasted their way into the compound, while gunmen attacked guards with mortars and rocket-propelled grenades.

Other militants took up positions near the main road, fighting off security reinforcements sent from Baghdad as several militants wearing suicide vests entered the prison on foot to help free the inmates.

Ten policemen and four militants were killed in the ensuing clashes, which continued until Monday morning, when military helicopters arrived, helping to regain control.

By that time, hundreds of inmates had succeeded in fleeing Abu Ghraib, the prison made notorious a decade ago by photographs showing abuse of prisoners by U.S. soldiers.

“The number of escaped inmates has reached 500, most of them were convicted senior members of al Qaeda and had received death sentences,” Hakim Al-Zamili, a senior member of the security and defense committee in parliament, told Reuters

My comment was not meant as an attack on you. It’s a word of caution regarding these stories – particularly as they are reported by the US media. AP and Reuters have posted false stories before so this won’t be the first time. TPM even is worse.

          • July 22, 2013 at 5:58 pm

I didn’t take it that way HF….. and I am just as cynical as you are (BTW TPM is just posting of AP report)….. if you read the AP report they have Iraqi officials on record saying they killed some of the men that escaped…. which is why I gave it credence…. I think we all take caution here at TOD when it comes to media reports of anything, and rightly so….

This country has allowed a virulent sliver of the American electorate to make all of their decisions. The only reason the RWNJ’s have crawled out of their fringe to become the voice of the Republican party is because Dem’s and Dem-leaning voters would rather whine than vote.

Republicans vote. All the time. That’s all we need to do.

They can even manage to muck up a perfectly normal birth…

But on CNN, one contributor — CNN Royal Contributor Victoria Arbiter — took the celebration a bit too far, offering her own insights into the relative merits of the baby’s sex:
My first thought, I have to say, was this is how brilliant a royal Kate is. There are women throughout British royal family history that have panicked not being able to deliver a boy, and here we are, Kate did it first time. So it does mean, of course, the change in the next succession conversation is over for another 30 years or so, but we’re celebrating and thrilled that Kate has had a healthy, bouncing baby boy.
In fact, the line of succession “conversation,” as Arbiter calls it, was decided earlier this year, when the 2013 Succession to the Crown Act made it so that the first child born — boy or girl — has a right to the throne. Though lawmakers are still working on implementing the law, it’s expected to go through.

Like they could pick the gender….smh

Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli has less than half as much cash as Democratic opponent Terry McAuliffe, with a prominent list of Republican donors sitting out this year’s most competitive U.S. political contest — and in some cases switching sides.

The financial disadvantage four months before the election illustrates the difficulties confronting an attorney general who is campaigning on an economic growth plan yet is best known for his opposition to gay marriage and abortion.

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli waves to the crowd with his wife, Tiero, after his acceptance speech as the Republican candidate for governor of Virginia at the Virginia Republican convention in Richmond on May 18, 2013. Photographer: Steve Helber/AP Photo
“Mr. Cuccinelli’s very hard stance on some of the social issues is a concern for me,” said Virginia Beach developer Bruce L. Thompson, chief executive officer of Gold Key/PHR Hotels and Resorts, a financial backer of current Republican Governor Bob McDonnell who in May gave McAuliffe $25,000.

“I believe personally in a woman’s right to choose, but I also think from an economic development standpoint, we’re trying to attract businesses from other areas of the country, and we’re telling women that we’re going to regulate the way that they run their life? I just don’t think we can be exclusionary when it comes to women” and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals, Thompson said.

    Keep talking, Kenny!

The most efficient means to suppress and control a segment of the population is to eliminate their ability to achieve economic independence, and to keep women out of the workforce and dependent on men for their subsistence, Republicans are creating a scenario that either a woman is celibate, or stays in a perpetual state of pregnancy. The attacks on women’s reproductive health choices in Republican-controlled states have no justification that is not founded in patriarchal belief that men are born to control women, and regardless the arguments proffered to regulate women’s reproductive health, it all boils down to keeping them in subjection to men.

  36. July 22, 2013 at 6:11 pm

“[T]he law creates an incentive for employers to keep employees’ work hours below 30 hours a week,” the letter explains. “Numerous employers have begun to cut workers’ hours to avoid this obligation, and many of them are doing so openly. The impact is two-fold: fewer hours means less pay while also losing our current health benefits.”

This is a real issue, and was a big part of the reason the Obama administration has delayed implementation of the law’s employer mandate for one year. Ideally, Congress would simply tweak the offending provision, but the GOP has committed to never tinkering with the law to make it better, and so the provision in question does threaten worker compensation and benefits.
Until the GOP moves off its position, there’s nothing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi can do to fix it.
