Chicago Tribune: During a trip to her hometown today, first lady Michelle Obama applauded the work of a South Loop non-profit group that is helping high school students get job experience and advice about attending college.

Obama joined Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his wife, Amy Rule, for a visit this morning to Urban Alliance Chicago, the career training program.

…  “To you all students, for having the courage to step outside your comfort zone and do something that was probably initially pretty scary,” Obama told about 50 teens gathered to see her. “I know that feeling. I was you guys. I say that all the time. Living on the South Side, looking at these buildings, wondering what goes on in those offices.”

All of these crappy folks like Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and the other dregs think that running for and being president is easy because PBO makes it look so easy. PBO has set a high bar and no one will ever be able to fill his shoes.

      • July 18, 2013 at 6:25 pm

COS, you hit the nail on the head. People who have no breadth of vision, no knowledge of the complexities of the world, both globally and region by region, who have no clue about how to cultivate and nurture the economy, no notion of the promise and peril of technology in all its various application, no sense of what ordinary Americans experience every day and what service really means – they are a MESS.

She believe Zimmerman was innocent, and it wouldn’t have made any difference what the D.A. said. B-37 had her mind made up, her Gerogie was innocent.

I think a couple people in the previous thread had asked about costs of repealing ACA/Health Care Reform.

I did a little research, and found this:

House of Representatives going on their 38th attempt! In addition the SENATE has had attempts to repeal Health care too!

    http://miami.cbslocal.com/2013/05/16/obamacare-repeal-votes-costs-tens-of-millions/

What could we have done with $100 Million? How many schools could we have funded? Lunch programs for kids?

I seriously hope the GOP burn in hell for this.

You’ll meet American scientists and innovators working on materials and technologies with amazing capabilities—seemingly ripped straight from the pages of a comic book or film script—including invisibility cloaks, impenetrable liquid armor, self-healing, touch-sensitive synthetic skin, and more. You’ll also hear how the Obama Administration’s Materials Genome Initiative – which just celebrated its second birthday – is helping to enable and accelerate these breakthroughs with the goal of making them happen faster and cheaper than ever before.

    Dear Friend,

In June 2011, gun lobby extremists pushed to enact an outrageous law in Florida that could strip doctors of their medical licenses if they give patients accurate, potentially life-saving information about the risks of guns. So the Brady Center took action.

We sued on behalf of Florida doctors to end this ridiculous gag rule. Last year, we won and the law was struck down in federal district court. But Governor Rick Scott and his gun lobby allies appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals — the highest level below the U.S. Supreme Court.

Today in Miami, we’ll face down the gun lobby extremists once again before three appeals judges. The stakes could not be higher.

Unless we win today in Miami, Florida doctors won’t be allowed to advise patients and their families about the inherent risks of guns. If you want to keep gun lobby extremists out of your doctor’s office, then please stand with the Brady Center’s Legal Action Project.

Just heard that 95% of the h.s. kids who have participated in Urban Alliance in Chicago are heading to college. This is the program run by Mayor Emanuel’s wife Amy and got the spotlight today thanks to Michelle Obama’s appearance and promotion. I agree with the First Lady. These kind of programs are needed everywhere. They combat urban violence and put these kids on a path to success.

We can add this to the list of wasteful RWNJ expenses!

    http://www.businessinsider.com/house-blag-money-doma-paul-clement-2013-3

Originally, the funding for this legal defense was capped at $500,000. The House GOP paid former Solicitor General and conservative Supreme Court rockstar Paul Clement to defend DOMA.

That cap has been repeatedly raised as the costs of defending the 1996 law have continued to spiral upwards. By October 2012, the GOP defense had burned through almost the entire new cap of $1.5 million.

Then, as of January, House Republicans authorized up to $3 million in government spending for Clement to defend the law.

All told, the House legal defense of the Defense of Marriage Act cost six times as much as the House GOP leadership originally anticipated.

Wonderful article about VP Joe Biden, his life, his politics, how he’s worked with President Obama and how he thinks. it’s a tribute really because, yes, Joe really is that good.

Have You Heard the One About President Joe Biden?

    http://www.gq.com/news-politics/newsmakers/201308/joe-biden-presidential-campaign-2016-2013?printable=true

“And I said, ‘Why do you want me to be vice president?’ ” he told me, explaining that he never wanted the VP job, really he didn’t, but Obama convinced him. “He said, ‘Help me govern. Joe, you do Iraq. Defense, State—talk to Joe, get it done. Recovery Act, almost a trillion dollars, do it, Joe!’….

Co-captains, that’s how he described his working relationship with Obama…..

“Biden didn’t have any interest in that. That was not the model he wanted. He put his political capital on helping Obama succeed. He wanted projects. Beginning, middle, and end projects.”

The deal has worked for Biden, and the deal has also worked for Obama. They round each other out. Biden can say malarkey. Biden can hug, literally, Republicans. “Joe Biden doesn’t have a mean bone in his body,” says John McCain. “He’s unique from the day he was elected before he was 30 years old. He’s unique in that he’s had some role in every major national-security crisis that his nation has faced in the last thirty-five years. I don’t know anyone like him in the U.S. Senate. Look at the number of times he’s been able to conclude agreements. I would say he’s been the most impactful vice president that I’ve known—certainly in modern times.”

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20130718/us-gang-rape-austin/?utm_hp_ref=homepage&ir=homepageAUSTIN, Texas —
As many as 10 men allegedly took turns sexually assaulting a 13-year-old runaway Texas girl in an apartment where some cheered and filmed the attacks with their cellphone cameras, according to court records released Thursday.
Authorities have charged two men in the alleged June 29 attacks, which began after the girl ran away from an Austin group home for children and got into a car with three unknown men, according to an arrest affidavit.
Juan Lozano Ortega, 25, and Edgar Gerardo Guzman Perez, 26, were charged Wednesday with aggravated sexual assault of a felony. They were being held Thursday in the Travis County Jail on $30,000 bond each. Court and jail records did not indicate whether the men had attorneys.
Austin police did not immediately return a phone message Thursday about the investigation or other possible suspects.
“All of the other males took turns having sex with victim against her will, which lasted through the early morning hours,” the affidavit states.
