SCOTUS opinion: US v Windsor, 12-307

From civil rights to dismantling Glass-Steagall, Mr Clinton did major harm to Americans, but, far and away, by being a ‘Democrat’ and fostering the DNC, he did much to ensure #GOP success.  Period.

The founding of OFA will become to be seen as the re-birth of the Democratic Party and one of Barack Obama’s most important contributions to the resuscitation of our Democracy and Middle Class.  It is for each of us to ensure that OFA flourishes and we trounce the #GOP in 2014, 2016 and beyond. A valid opposition party will emerge, that is a prerequisite for sustainable democracy. I suspect it will arise from the Democratic Party itself as the Party shifts further left of center in the decades ahead.

Little doubt that the gravest threat to our democracy and humanity will be issues spawned by the now likely irreversible effects of failure to control CO2 levels.  A vibrant OFA-led Democratic Party is truly our only hope in facing that threat.

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals today (June 28th,3013) abruptly lifted its injunction that barred same-sex marriages while Proposition 8 finished its course through the legal system. Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, who were plaintiffs in the lawsuit to invalidate the voter-approved initiative, were married starting at 4:45 p.m. at San Francisco City Hall. Soon after, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa married Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, the other plaintiffs in the lawsuit against Proposition 8, in a ceremony at Los Angeles City Hall.

With the President’s Africa trip coming in the midst of the SCOTUS decision, I thought a refresher of that historic day was in order….

Reposting from the end of last thread:

Infuriately enough, the Pentagon has absolved Booz-Allen of any culpability in hiring the treasonous #Snowden (after GG’s manipulations) and will (no doubt) continue to offer them (very) lucrative government contracts:

Reposting my reply from the last thread

A young guy gives up the rest of his life so media pundits like gg can attack the black man in the white house – and the company that gave the information to said guy and GG will be rewarded for their stupid.

They probably know a lot of sensitive secrets, and there are probably 100 Snowden’s embedded there. Remember, this privatization of national security has been going on for decades. It’s naive to think that years of bad behavior can be overturned overnight – especially since many civil servants and other government workers can’t be replaced. There are limits.

Thank you, LP, that was a nice round-up, history, and refresher of a good day for all Americans. You always approach your subject through many different lenses.

I really wish these kind of incentives were in place during Jerry Brown’s first stint as Governor (“Spaceship Earth”) in the 1970s.

The costs for solar panels would have been driven down, incentives for storing energy would have been there to fuel development.

I am so glad that Californians had the good sense to elect him now, when he is really making a difference!

MUST READ: “To understand the depth of the damage that the Supreme Court’s June 25 decision, Shelby County v. Holder, has inflicted on the voting rights of African-Americans, you have to measure it against the backdrop of the takeover of state legislatures, primarily in the South, by the Republican Party……… Since the enactment of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, the number of blacks elected to Southern state legislatures has grown from fewer than five to 313, all but a handful as Democrats. While blacks rose in the once dominant Democratic Party, Southern whites defected. Now, in the former Confederacy, Republicans have gained control of all 11 state legislatures.”

“So, this guy who made a stink-pile of money in the car alarm business, and had some youthful trouble with the law over auto-related liberties, gets the break he’s been waiting for after Republicans win control of the House in 2010….. He’s got plans, lots of plans. He’s going to stage television-ready hearings and investigations of the White House. He will bring Barack Obama to his knees. “I want seven hearings a week, times 40 weeks,” he says. Don’t worry about substance, he says of one subject field, “it’ll be good theater.”

I wonder if they would think it funny of ….Ron Goldberging or Nicole Simpsoning? This is exactly what LL’s Post was about the insensitivity of our of the people in the world especially Americans who can not relate to the pain of others especially minorities due to our media.

So hard to believe that people find this amusing.

Those of us whose male cohorts had to register for the draft on their 18th birthday didn’t take death as a laughing matter (Vietnam War era).

We drove our parents crazy, but hey, we were for love, not war (and most certainly not for death; just about everyone knew someone who was in Vietnam at the time).

Mandatory national service sounds better and better (POTUS is a big supporter) now; our young people barely move these days, and getting them out in the fresh air would be a benefit to everyone.

One final repost from previous thread:

“The bill sponsored by Warren along Senators John McCain, an Arizona Republican, Maria Cantwell, a Washington Democrat, and Angus King, a Maine independent, would separate traditional banks that offer checking and savings accounts insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. from “riskier financial institutions.” The latter category includes companies involved in investment banking, insurance, swaps dealing, hedge funds and private equity, according to the lawmakers’ statement.”

The hubris of the WJC administration thinking that history didn’t matter (i.e., The Great Depression) is still galling to me.

Also, love that this bill is sponsored from coast-to-coast (Maria Cantwell, Washington state and Angus King, Maine).

I think this is the one bill that would really make a difference between now and 2014 elections (any bills passed by our reprehensible House will be garbage–not much chance of that happening, though).
