Today has been a horrific day in news; with the plane crash in San Francisco and the train explosion in Canada. Layla lost three friends to the train explosion and there are others in San Francisco and Canada who are going through a lot right now. We here at TOD, keep you all and yes you Layla, in our thoughts and send comforting wishes your way.
What a relief that everyone’s been accounted for. I just heard the mayor say that too. [Why do I still have the news on?]
anyway, I remember this guy Dan Ashley as one of the local reporters who got a sit-down interview with the President last year. He was competent, thoughtful and respectful. I liked him.
Thank goodness. Someone here on the blog the other day mentioned maybe PBO should just bypass WHPC and rotate among local reporters when he has press events. I agree completely.
That’s something I applaud Rachel Maddow for. She brings local reporters to the national eye and their reports always seem journalistically professional without the egos and the soundbites. I wholeheartedly support your idea. That would be so good not only for citizens receiving sound information but also for the news profession in our country. Lets bring up the talented and professional and leave the pretty faces and compromised integrity problems behind.
Article says: “…She has made it clear that she wants to run for the Senate seat now held by Michael B. Enzi, a soft-spoken Republican and onetime fly-fishing partner of her father.”
and:”…Liz Cheney, who grew up in McLean and moved her family to the Jackson Hole area last year, is eager to establish her Cowboy State credentials, peppering social media sites with photos of her children’s horse-riding competitions and descriptions of Wyoming as “God’s Country…”
———–
I read this part with interest: “…But Ms. Cheney’s move threatens to start a civil war within the state’s Republican establishment, despite the reverence many hold for her family.
Mr. Enzi, 69, says he is not ready to retire, and many Republicans say he has done nothing to deserve being turned out.
It would bring about “the destruction of the Republican Party of Wyoming if she decides to run and he runs, too,” Alan K. Simpson, a former Republican senator from the state, said in an interview last week. “It’s a disaster — a divisive, ugly situation — and all it does is open the door for the Democrats for 20 years.”
Just like Bill Clinton seems to want to extend his power through Hillary and eventually Chelsea, Cheney seems to be trying to make his evil daughter a mouthpiece for his toxic plans. She is dangerous, empty-headed and vile. I hope the people of Wyoming have better sense. Senators have much more say in what happens in this country, since each state, regardless of population, gets two senators – why should the country suffer if the people of Wyoming are willing to throw away their own futures?
Needless to say, this tragedy at SFO has been just a terrible event. I’ve been glued to local reports and hoping for the best. Our PD and firefighters have been working hard to secure the safety of everyone. Our hospitals are dealing with the trauma. There is a very sad feeling in the air. Just a terrible day.
Meta, I am so sorry to hear about this tragedy in SF! I share the sadness most people in SF must be going through. I still vividly remember the day, 35 years ago, when a plane (PSA) crashed in San Diego, less than a mile from where I lived. Prayers for the people and their families on that plane.
”The locomotive portion of the 73-car train actually detached half a mile outside of the small town, he added, but the cars carrying the oil kept right on rolling. McGonigle said there are security mechanisms in place to prevent anyone from tampering with the train, and the proper checks were done by the conductor before he left the vehicle. No one except him or another employee of the company should have been able to set it in motion.
“That’s what confuses us. How did this happen?” McGonigle said. “There are many fail-safe modes. How this happened is just beyond us.”
Don’t know why I am reminded of this – perhaps “for want of common sense”
For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the message was lost.
For want of a message the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
But by mentioning the “conductor” is someone – the private company running the rail perhaps – blaming the smallest cog in the wheel for a truly major tragedy?
The Federal Election Commission is already in a state of wretched dysfunction, but it will only get worse if Republican members succeed in crippling the agency further when the commission meets on Thursday. The three Republicans on the commission appear ready to take advantage of a temporary vacancy on the three-member Democratic side to push through 3-to-2 votes for a wholesale retreat from existing regulations.
Under their proposals, agency workers would no longer be allowed to routinely forward information about potential criminal violations by campaigners to the Justice Department, and the commission’s staff investigators would be severely hobbled in conducting preliminary inquiries. This would provide further aid and comfort to politicians and operatives who run roughshod over campaign laws.
The proposed changes amount to naked subversion from within. The F.E.C.’s own general counsel, Anthony Herman, felt compelled to warn last month against ending regular information sharing with Justice Department officials, a procedure he stressed has “greatly benefited” enforcement of the law and is standard procedure for all regulatory agencies. The proposals are being pushed by Donald McGahn, the Republican vice chairman of the commission who has engineered repeated 3-to-3 standoff votes to stymie approval of staff recommendations for penalties against campaigners found in violation of the law… [more in the article]
Sabotage at the Election Commission http://t.co/sK5f89uC3r GOP try weakening election regulations once again.
Since the Congress is well and truly ‘out of session,’ is there any reason the president can’t appoint a Democrat–at least on a temporary basis? The R’s may howl, but who cares?
So sorry to hear about about Layla’s friends among the victims in Canada. Deepest condolences to the families and friends of those whose lives were lost. Such a horrible tragedy.
I left a little under 24 hours ago, happy and ‘on top of the world’ that Chips loved my quiz so much she made up another; yet in that time my world has shifted very unexpectedly and painfully. I can’t answer questions because I have no real answers, and also because when I get slapped on the side of the head I can’t talk without getting upset. I definitely got slapped and I don’t want to get upset here, however selfishly, I really could use a hug or two.
My phone rang at 2:14am this morning – the police asking if my 10yr old nephew was per chance with me. It rang again at around 4am – my sister to say my nephew’s body had been found in the pool of the home where he had attended a pool party. The parents holding the party didn’t know he was there. Huh? Two young party goers saw him. Two others (the children of the house) didn’t. Huh? H is shoes and shirt were found at the house (on the grounds?) Huh? So far nothing makes any sense, even the answers my sister and her husband have so far received from the police! Indeed, more doesn’t make sense to me, but as I said, there are no answers right now.
I’m not staying on line; selfishly I needed to feel your support as I try to get some sleep. Take care. VC
VC, I am so, so, sorry to hear about your loss. Loosing a child is one of the most devastating experience any one can go through! You and your sister and your entire family are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope you can summon all the strength to go on. Always remember you have friends to help out when the pain gets so unbearable. I know from experience that the pain can get unbearable, especially in search of answers of why the loss of a child. I also know that family members and friends are the ones who will always be there for you to ease some of that pain.
Dearest VC, no words can help ease the pain and loss that you are feeling right now. We surround you with love and prayers of comforting grace. {{{{{{{{{{ VC }}}}}}}}}}
Good Morning everyone and thank you for the hugs! It, surprisingly to me, really did help to lay the burden down for a while among friends and to be able to rest my head upon your shoulders! Thanks everyone! Really! I know no more than I did when I last spoke to you, but I needed to come for the sustaining hugs. They really helped! My mother woke me at 6am (I didn’t bother telling her that was the 3rd time I had awoken since going to bed) to find out what I knew, because she couldn’t sleep. She waited until then (to be reasonable). 🙄 She knows that phone calls are the worst way to wake me up, but I guess she forgot. My only uncle, her younger brother passed away unexpectedly only a year ago and she took it badly, so I don’t doubt she is having a rough time emotionally. Anyways, I don’t intend to burden the village with this unbelievable yet very real personal tragedy, so I’ll let you know what’s the final verdict when we know. Until then, know that I appreciate your support, AND it really helps. I’ll be in and out. I would say ‘please proceed’ except that the context in which it was first used doesn’t apply here. /gentle smile/ Love you guys!
Oh, VC, I can’t imagine the pain you and your family must feel. This is horrific and such a devastating and senseless loss, it’s beyond imagining. You have my prayers, hugs and deepest support.
vc, It’s a shocking sad news on top of other tragic news y’day. It’s always sad to lose the young in such an unexpected manner. My condolences to your sister and her family and to you. Wishing you all the strength to pull through this.

Thank you UT for this thread and for your heartfelt condolences for the victims of the tragedies in SF and Montreal. May all the families who lost loved ones, as well as the survivors of the two tragedies and their families, find strength to cope with the unimaginable pain they are going through.
My heart breaks for Layla, vc and everyone affected in SF. ((((((((((((Layla and vc))))))))))). I am so sorry. The events are both tragic and senseless. My mother’s passing earlier this week was such a blessing. She is finally at peace and it whole again. There’s rejoicing in heaven and here on earth. But, these events are totally opposite. May God comfort everyone involved.
{{{TnMG}}} There you are! I heard the news earlier of your mom heading home but was awaiting your return to give you a personal hug. Continued blessings and good thoughts sent to you and your family!
Oh VC, I wasn’t able to be on the blog after yesterday morning and I only just saw your news from last night about your nephew. It’s just unspeakably heartbreaking, I am so sorry about what your family are going through, love and comfort to you all.
VC – I just read about your nephew, and I’m so sorry to hear of this terrible loss to you and your family. No one should have to deal with losing a child this young. My heartfelt condolences to you, and wishing you and family as much peace and comfort during this difficult time.
Yesterday was a tragic day indeed. Oh Layla and VC, words are just not enough to express my sympathy for what you are going through. I will continue to pray for you – I hope you can feel the love and best wishes coming your way from Connecticut.
Wow, such sad news to wake up to. Layla, so sad to hear of the loss of your three friends; just astonishing that such a freak accident ends in such tragedy for so many.
VC, my deepest condolences on the tragic loss of your little nephew. When it’s the right time please share with us a remembrance of him if you wish.
More shootings here in Chicago but I was trying to put it into perspective based upon a comparison of Chicago’s population compared to other cities. For 80% of the Chicago MSA population here these shootings are a world away; confined to a specific section of Chicago that sadly suffers from poor schools and no jobs. I saw this headline when I searched LA; 5 killed by a gunman. http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/06/07/18831196-five-dead-including-gunman-in-shooting-rampage-near-los-angeles?lite
I honestly think that the headline focus is on Chicago because the media wants to tie these tragedies to POTUS.
Good Morning…Would like to send thoughts and prayers to VC, Layla, and all those in pain…Know you are surrounded by many that you don’t even know sending positive energy your way…

I like Dan Ashley too, Duddette. He isn’t into sensationalism. We need real journalists like Dan Ashley, especially on tragic days like today.

Great UT! You keep knocking it out of the park!

Look who wants to be a Senator from Wyoming — Liz Cheney [Ugh!]
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/07/us/politics/a-cheney-on-the-wyoming-ballot-if-so-a-problem-for-the-gop.html?_r=1&
Silver lining: Apparently some in the WY GOP think she’ll fracture the party in that State. If that’s the case, I say, Run Liz Run! Now do we have anybody good on the Dem side to run against Satan’s Daughter and incumbent Mike Enzi?
I didn’t know she lived here and whose seat she after, Barrasso? Ugh!

Enzi is from Gillette. He has never voted against party that I know of. She hasn’t been around our town.
The true spawn of satan!
I know, I can’t stand the thought. She thinks we’re just stepping stone tho presidency. I can’t imagine her kids going to public school.
You mean she has kids? Who the hell would marry her? That would be like sleepin’ with a cobra!
From what I gathered, her husband is a grifter, too, and had a cushie, no-work, no-talent-required job in the State Dept during the Bush-Cheney years.
One snake to another I guess, eh?
Thanks UT. Both crashes have left a mark on those affected. We have to pray for all. Our hearts are with you Layla.
My heart goes out to you Layla, saying a prayer for you.
Prayers for all those who are bereft of loved ones tonight.
Keeping you in my thoughts Layla.

Hang in there. You have a great city, with great people living there – I’m guessing you’ll all help each other get through.

A tragic day to wake up to. Who the hell allowed a train fully loaded with explosive materials to park on a slope for a crew change ?
The runaway train…there’s a lot of questions!……
”The locomotive portion of the 73-car train actually detached half a mile outside of the small town, he added, but the cars carrying the oil kept right on rolling. McGonigle said there are security mechanisms in place to prevent anyone from tampering with the train, and the proper checks were done by the conductor before he left the vehicle. many fail-safe modes, my ass. Common sense says don’t park a train on a slope.

I saw this headline when I searched LA; 5 killed by a gunman. http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/06/07/18831196-five-dead-including-gunman-in-shooting-rampage-near-los-angeles?lite
I honestly think that the headline focus is on Chicago because the media wants to tie these tragedies to POTUS.
