20 Million Thanks!

Did I miss the 20 million moment? Well, yes-ish 😳

For the fun of it, our visitors in the last year – with apologies to Greenland who I slandered the other day for not visiting at all: two Greenlanders dropped by in the last 12 months 😎

But….. what is that Arctic-y country to the right of Greenland that has never come near here? Geography experts? Name and shame, please.

Love ya all, especially the awesome blog tyrants, back later with the cheesy puffs. Chat on!

Congratulations Chips on 20,000,000. It looks like the country to the right of Greenland is Svalbard. Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, constituting the northernmost part of Norway. Located north of mainland Europe, it is about midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole.

In 2012, Svalbard had a population of 2,642, of which 439 were Russian and Ukrainian, 10 were Polish and 322 were other non-Norwegians living in Norwegian settlements. The largest non-Norwegian groups in Longyearbyen in 2005 were from Thailand, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, and Germany.] Svalbard is among the safest places on Earth, with virtually no crime. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svalbard

    • July 4, 2013 at 2:57 pm

Yeah, it *soooo* safe (from the article):

“Polar bears are the iconic symbol of Svalbard, and one of the main tourist attractions.[99] While protected, anyone outside of settlements is required to carry a rifle to kill polar bears in self defense, as a last resort, should they attack;”

That 2013 line is true, but he might have been a bit generous in leaving out some of the women and all of the “Indians.” Used to be a saying, “two steps forward and one step back.” It seems it’s now one step forward and two steps back, unless you’re a white male who isn’t gay, poor, sick, uninsured, and/or a member of a union. And I may have forgotten some other “categories,” in that last part.

    Congratulation Ms. Chips!
I have been very down these days due to the SCOUTS rulings on Voters’ Rights. The only thing that kept me smiling was our First Family’s visit to Africa. Today, I can smile because of your, yet another milestone. Today this 4th of July feels like the eight years GWB was in office and previous Administrations who purposely and willfully excluded people of color.
I am so grateful as a child we celebrated the 4th of July as a family making sure that we never accept that we were a “minority”. We were taught to be proud and no one had a right to label us with their insecurities and words. There was a uncle who was shouting he back because he refused to answer to the N—word. Shot in the back, he refused to turn around. We celebrated because we had a right to, but it was also a time to instill pride and respect
It was a time where we were taught AA history at home. I do my best to pass it on at family gatherings.
Thank you, Ms. Chips for making me smile today.

This hurts my heart, LDS. I’m so sorry. Like I said before, we can never consider our country to be exceptional unless and until we are all respected, and free and equal in every way. We have work to do.

      July 4, 2013 at 4:58 pm

LDS, I’m deeply sorry for the hurt your family suffered when your uncle was shot in the family. No family, no person should have to endure this kind of tyranny and hatred. There are deep flaws in this country and racism is the ugly disease that continues to poison our nation’s core, as the Supreme Court so flagrantly demonstrated this week.

But please take heart from the fact that millions of people will be fighting back–from seniors like me to the young millennials and the generations behind them who have little tolerance for this kind of injustice. There are many ways that we can fight voter suppression–we register, we raise funds to help get voter IDs, we accompany people to the polls, we watch, we report, we protest and we keep on fighting. What we don’t do–ever–is give up because that’s exactly what the right wing SCOTUS members and the racists want us to do. If we become discouraged or resigned or passive in any way, they win. We have to treat every election as an epic battle that we fight to the end. I intend the take the SCOTUS decision as an impetus to try harder and do more. Let’s show them that they’re messing with the wrong people when they suppress the rights of Americans.

What we’ve been saying all along….they’re FINALLY connecting the dots?!

In March 2013, when Edward Snowden sought a job with Booz Allen Hamilton at a National Security Agency facility in Hawaii, he signed the requisite classified-information agreements and would have been made well aware of the law regarding communications intelligence.
In short, if Snowden knowingly broke the agreement he’d be guilty of a federal crime. But he always knew he was going to break it, says Epstein:

He took that position so he could arrange to have published classified communications intelligence, as he told the South China Morning Post earlier this month. The point of Mr Snowden’s penetration was to get classified data from the NSA …
My question would be, then: Was he alone in this enterprise to misappropriate communications intelligence?
Before taking the job in Hawaii, Mr Snowden was in contact with people who would later help arrange the publication of the material he purloined. Two of these individuals, filmmaker Laura Poitras and Guardian blogger Glenn Greenwald, were on the Board of the Freedom of the Press Foundation that, among other things, funds WikiLeaks.
In January 2013, according to the Washington Post, Mr Snowden requested that Ms. Poitras get an encryption key for Skype so that they could have a secure channel over which to communicate.
In February, he made a similar request to Mr Greenwald, providing him with a step-by-step video on how to set up encrypted communications.

      • July 4, 2013 at 4:18 pm

HAHAHA! One of the comments to this article made me LOL 🙂

// “Snowden was planted by Axelrod just like the woman at that IRS meeting who asked about the tea party targeting, and Obama’s code pink heckler. This little scene from the Obama minstrel show is a success. The media are now flooded with this story (which most of Wonder Boy’s enemies support him on) and NOT talking about IRS or Benghazi.

Watch for new shocking revelations from Snowden every time the IRS and Benghazi stories start getting embarrassing for Barry. These cheap, pathetic White House histrionics are quite effective on low-information voters and media buttkissers. Snowden will never be caught or prosecuted.” //

    http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2013/07/03/195767/obamas-new-guantanamo-envoy-begins.html#.UdXN7DvVDrB

WASHINGTON — The State Department’s new special envoy for the closure of the prison camp at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba began work this week with a one-day trip to the notorious site and said Wednesday that closing it was a national priority.

Clifford Sloan, a former publisher of Slate magazine and a Washington attorney who’s worked in all three branches of government, told McClatchy that he spent Tuesday touring the camp – learning about operations from its military commanders and talking with medical officials, presumably about the hunger strike that’s now spread to 106 of the 166 prisoners.

Sloan’s arrival this week rejuvenates diplomatic efforts that had been scaled back after his predecessor, Ambassador Daniel Fried, was moved to another department and the position vacated in January. Sloan said that he visited the prison camp on the second day of his new job because he considered it “essential” to have a feel for the place as he forges ties with Congress and foreign governments to move quickly toward the goal of repatriating detainees or finding countries willing to take prisoners in need of resettlement.

“President Obama has been very clear as he laid out the goal, and the objective is to close Guantanamo,” Sloan said in a 15-minute interview, the first since his appointment last month. “Our marching orders are clear.”

It would have been closed in the first months of his admin. if Republicans? squimish Dems hadn’t mucked it up. Needs to be DONE!
