Nobody said implementation of ObamaCare would be easy; Medicare and Social Security had a rough ride initially, but now? Try to mess with them negatively and watch the backlash explode. RWJF: Traditionally, individuals considering leaving their job to strike out on their own have worried that they may be denied health insurance coverage because they have preexisting conditions, fear losing access to a trusted physician, or are unable to afford the premiums without an employer sharing the costs. The result is that some U.S. workers feel âjob lock,â being tethered to their jobs and unable to leave, even if their skills and talents no longer match their position.
New research estimates that the number of self-employed Americans will be 1.5 million higher in 2014 because of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Beginning next year, access to high-quality, subsidized health insurance coverage will no longer be exclusively tied to employment, which could lead people to pursue their own businesses as self-employed entrepreneurs.

Denise Early: Around 900,000 people living in Arizona do not have health insurance. Over 90% of them will get help from Obamacare. 94% of uninsured people in Tucson will get help paying for their health insurance under Obamacare, according to Enroll America. Based on census data, 50% of the uninsured in Tucson would qualify for expanded Medicaid. In Arizona, Medicaid is run by AHCCCS, pronounced âaccessâ (Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System). 44% of uninsured Tucsonans would qualify for help with their health insurance premium.

The White House Blog: The Medicare Trustees reported some good news for seniors and taxpayers: The Medicare program will be solvent through 2026, nearly a decade longer than projected at the time of passage of the Affordable Care Act. This is 2 years longer than projected last year. Their annual report also shows that the long run actuarial deficit in the Hospital Insurance Trust Fund â a measure of its long-term fiscal health â has been cut by more than 70 percent since enactment of the health care law. The long-run Medicare deficit has fallen from 3.88 percent of taxable payroll in the 2009 Trustees Report to 1.11 percent in this report.
These long-run gains are matched by short-term relief: the Trustees also project that the Part B premium will not increase between 2013 and 2014, keeping out-of-pocket costs for beneficiaries down. Medicare cost growth has remained at historically low levels over the past three years even as new benefits for preventive care and prescription drugs have helped tens of millions of beneficiaries access care at lower cost. The law reduces prescription drug costs by closing the donut hole, a policy that has already saved more than 6 million seniors more than $700 each. And more than 32 million seniors have accessed a free preventive service under the law, helping them stay healthy and avoid future illness.

Ezra Klein and Evan Soltas: In 2009, the Congressional Budget Office predicted that a medium-level âsilverâ plan â which covers 70 percent of a beneficiaryâs expected health costs â on the California health exchange would cost $5,200 annually. More recently, a report from the consulting firm Milliman predicted it would carry a $450 monthly premium. Yesterday, we got the real numbers. And theyâre lower than anyone thought.
The way this competition can drive down rates is already evident in Oregon. There, one insurer came in with monthly premium costs in the $169 range, while other insurers asked to charge more than $400. But then, seeing  what their competitors were charging, two insurers came back to the stateâs regulators and asked if they could refile at lower rates. Otherwise, they wouldnât be competitive in the exchange. The Obama administration was ecstatic to see this: Itâs exactly what theyâre hoping will happen across the country.

They were far lower than anyone expected. âThis is a home run for consumers in every region of California,â crowed Peter Lee, director of the stateâs exchanges. The Affordable Care Actâs critics saw it differently. Avik Roy, a conservative health writer at Forbes, said Lee was being âmisleadingâ and that âObamacare, in fact, will increase individual-market premiums in California by as much as 146 percent.â Obamacare, he said, would trigger ârate shock,â the jolt people feel when they see higher rates.  Roy got his 146 percent by heading to eHealthInsurance.com, running a search for insurance plans in California and comparing the cost of the cheapest plans to the cost of the plans being offered in the exchanges. Thatâs not just comparing apples to oranges. Itâs comparing apples to oranges that the fruit guy may not even let you buy.
Click to buy the plan and eventually youâll have to answer pages and pages of questions about your health history. Ever had cancer? How about an ulcer? How about a headache? Do you feel sad when it rains?  Is there a history of cardiovascular disease in your family? Have you ever known anyone who had the flu? The actual cost of the plan will depend on how you answer those questions. According to HealthCare.gov, 14 percent of people who try to buy that plan are turned away outright. Another 12 percent are told theyâll have to pay more than $109.
Comparing the pre-underwriting price of this plan to those in Obamacareâs exchanges is ridiculous. The plans in Obamacareâs exchanges have to include those people. They canât turn anyone away or jack up rates because of a history of arthritis or heart disease. They also have to offer insurance that meets a certain minimum standard. Under Obamacare, for instance, the out-of-pocket limit for someone making 100 to 200 percent of the poverty line is $1,983. Under the Value 4500, you could spend up to $9,500 before the out-of-pocket limit kicked in. Obamacare also has subsidies for people making up to four times the poverty line. The poor pay next to nothing. The rich pay full freight.

Sy Mukherjee: Golden State small businesses and their employees got some great news: two of the stateâs largest insurers will have to give them over $36 million in insurance rebates because of an Obamacare consumer protection.
The health law forces insurers to spend at least 80 percent of the premiums they charge on paying for actual medical services, rather than administrative overhead or profits. That means more money for ordinary consumers â and less for profitable insurance companies.

Tara Culp-Ressler: A new study focusing on low-income women in St. Louis, MO concludes that expanding access to free contraception â just as the health care reform law does through its provision to provide birth control without a co-pay â leads to significantly lower rates of unintended teen pregnancy and abortion. Researchers found that when women werenât prohibited by cost, they chose more effective, long-lasting forms of birth control and experienced many fewer unintended pregnancies as a result.

ThinkProgress: Americans who bought individual health plans in 2012 saved $2.1 billion thanks to Obamacare consumer protections that limit how much insurers can profit off of Americansâ premiums, according to a new study by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF). The vast majority of those savings stem from individual health plan providers lowering the premiums they charge Americans in an effort to comply with the reform law.
The Kaiser study comes shortly after several major California insurers announced that they would have to pay back $36 million to small businesses and their employees after charging them too much. Obamacare mandates that insurers on the individual market spend at least 80 percent of the premiums they charge on actual medical services, or reimburse the amount they overspent to their customers.
But insurers can avoid writing those checks after-the-fact if they just lower their premiums to begin with â and KFFâs study concludes thatâs what many individual plan providers have been doing.

UT, I could truly hug you for this magnificent post. Educating massive numbers of people is a huge undertaking and it’s done one by one, person to person, one success story after another. This week the true impact of ObamaCare hit home. My son was laid off from his 9-year job and was without health insurance. On Sunday, he took himself to the emergency room because he suspected he might be having a heart attack. Thanks to heaven, it was just a bunch of stress that was causing him problems, but the bill he will be asked to pay for that one visit will be enormous, as well as another source of stress. Next year, when he is enrolled in ObamaCare that extra stress will be eliminated and, personally, I can’t wait. People across this country have no idea what peace of mind this health care law will bring. When it’s fully implemented people will be thanking President Obama for generations.

ohh I just learned today that my little granddaughter’s mother is going to become the executive manager implementing “ObamaCare” for the company she works for here in DC. Apparently her job was based on and solely set up to implement Obamacare. Anyway I will email this to her too.. and any news I get from her, I shall pass on here.

My best friend is a Human Resources V.P. for an American (yes, American) manufacturing company. She wants single payer like the rest of us, but she believes taking health care responsibility from employers is the best thing that can happen. She understands that the steps need to be gradual but making health care affordable and available for individuals and their families will actually free things up. But it must be affordable, it must be readily available and it has to be sufficiently regulated.
Businesses make our (very limited) health insurance choices based on all kinds of factors that have nothing to do with health care. She would love to see employers get out of the health care business. She always thought ACA, if allowed to be implemented properly, would be a step in that direction.
I agree. The way my son describes this company that my granddaughter’s mom works for – is that its a company that was created solely to implement Obamacare. when I find out more, I’ll share here.

They get a little packet of material so they understand the history of the country,” Mrs. Obama says in response to a question from Bernadette in Des Moines, Iowa, about how the First Lady prepares her daughters for what they’ll encounter in impoverished countries. She doesn’t shelter them from harsh realities: “I want my girls to get the entire feel of what it means to be in countries that are not the United States.”
She adds, “I want my kids to be educated and have as much information as they can about the countries that they’re visiting.”

i was guessing republican, libertarian, emoprogs. i don’t really consider emoprogs “left” though. they’re more of a libertarian/liberal hybrid, which leans more on the libertarian side. any true leftist knows the value of what president obama is doing and the importance of actually accomplishing things in order to move things back to the left after all these decades of a rightward drift. just a matter of time as the white male stranglehold of power continues to be loosened anyway based on demographics and new media. what we can do though is make it happen faster and faster, which can reduce suffering for millions of people across the globe the faster we accomplish it.

I mean, I was watching the BBC last night before I went to bed, and they did a segment on how oil was at $102 a barrel SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE OF EGYPT. The traders are worried that the country will descend into chaos and civil war, and that the Suez Canal will be cut off. This is a big fucking deal, both for us and our allies. But it doesn’t sell Viagra.

Well, it’s not on TV. I have a Google TV device in both the living room and bedroom; I navigate to streamago.tv, and they have a stream of BBC World. A few cable companies carry BBC World in the states, but mine doesn’t.

LL, if it takes more than two brain cells to report a story, requires an ounce of energy and doesn’t involve the tea party, it’s not worth the bother of the American media. The billionaire media owners don’t want to tax the intelligence of American viewers, so they keep them ignorant and in the dark. Information is power, after all, so we can’t have the riffraff knowing things. I’s seen documentaries of WWII on the home front where families kept maps with pins on the wall, so they could locate the site of battles and follow the complex European, Pacific and African war theaters. That kind of attention to a world situation would be unthinkable in today’s America.
I truly hope AJ America will be a corrective to the sorry excuse for news we have in this country. But really, today, at this very moment, I’m just fed up.
Egyptian army suspends constitution
The head of the Egyptian army has appeared live on television, announcing the suspension of the constitution.
General Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi, flanked by religious and military leaders, said the chief justice of constitutional court would take the powers of the presidency.
His announcement means President Mohammed Morsi is no longer in power.
Anti-Morsi protesters in Cairo’s Tahrir Square gave out a huge cheer in response to the speech.

I’m always uneasy about throwing out democratic processes,. However, I have Coptic Christian friends with family in Egypt and the elections were rigged and virtually impossible for everyone to vote, or feel safe about voting. It’s been bad.
my question is about the military there.. is it trustworthy? Whats to stop them from just keeping power? Is this General going to be a good thing.. ?

I agree with you, Nena. When Israel was attacking the Gaza strip last year, Morsi negotiated that cease fire with an enormous amount of help from President Obama, who was currently on an international trip. And then President Obama praised Morsi’s level-headedness. Morsi could have taken that success and run with it, leveraged that popularity and support from President Obama to do good for his people. Instead, he immediately started his shenanigans with the Constitution, and started a swift decline that led to this day. He chose his path, unfortunately.

President Obama has no fingerprints on Morsi’s decline or the actions taken by the Egyptian military – so, it will be up to us to remind people of those facts when the GOP-led media starts their nonsense.

That’s not going to happen. People have to be patient with these new democracies. When the US gained independence, it had a President assassinated, a civil war and generations of racist policies to overcome – and dozens other issues. The road was not smooth. We have to let these fledgling democracies evolve at their own pace, and there will be bumps and mistakes. More advanced democracies need to help, not judge. I mean, just look at what kind of perversion of democracy is happening right now in US state legislatures – 200 years after independence!

I agree that people need to be patient. They also need to know what they want…….Not just what they do not want. Election has consequences. For next yrs, if a Muslim Brotherhood is not elected…..what is it to stop them from mobilizing and using these same methods and outst that person.
I wish Egypt well. I just want them to know that before they outst a duly elected leader, that could come back and hunt them in the future.
I think that in these modern times, people do not have patience and there is the Greed/Religious factor. America was formed by well educated people and our populations were small compared to today. It is my opinion that there are too many young people who are unemployed and have been ruled under a dictorship that they just did not want another one to take hold in hopes they can vote them out when these power hungry folks get into power they don’t give it up (see the GOP). I applaud them that they will not tolerate a President that promises one thing then does the opposite. Americans always felt politicians lie, that’s normal and we can vote them out. This new breed of GOP lie to get into office, does the opposite, then make sure you can’t vote them out.
Lack of patience is ultimately one of the major downfalls of mankind.
