Night Owl Chat – Musical Cities

I’ve had this song stuck in my head for a couple of days, and I thought, “Hey, what a great theme for a musical chat.” So, songs about the cities we love.

The song in question: Dionne Warwick – “Do You Know The Way To San Jose”

She Wants Revenge – “…And A Song for Los Angeles”

Scott McKenzie – “San Francisco” (Yes, three CA songs in a row. Sue me.)

Alicia Keys – “New York”

10cc – “One Night in Paris”

The Clash, Dave Grohl, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, and Little Steven – “London Calling”

Bryan Ferry – “Tokyo Joe”

What cities do you love? Let us know.

This is your urban paradise early evening chat.

This Dionne Warwick song really confused me when I was little. I just couldn’t understand what she was singing about. I think I suffered some degree of trauma over it…

Cape Town, South Africa is one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever visited. I can’t wait to see the First Family there.

Nooooooooo….I call foul. You can’t have “New York” as just Alicia Keys. That’s Jay-Z’s song. New York is Jay-Z. The song was a hit and became an anthem for New York because of the lyrics, beats, and pure New York vibe Jay-Z gave it. Musical error 101.

Absolutely must include Chicago…..two great songs for that wonderful city.

THIS is the real New York. Might not be named “New York” but this is what New York is about.

And for those who missed this; THIS is what Texas is about.

Charleston, S.C. is a beautiful place. Unfortunately the state is run by knuckle-draggers.

Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown used to play a song where he said: “I was born in Louisiana and raised on the Texas side.” In this song New Orleans’ flavor really asserts itself. It’s definitely blues, but that New Orleans jazz sound can’t be missed.

Bono was on Irish teevee last night and gave the most pitiful set of excuses for U2 avoiding paying taxes in Ireland …. he referred to U2 as a “business”. I spent my entire youth defending him against detractors, oh my.

Sometimes I and music lovers all over the world have to ignore the artists and concentrate on the songs or else it’d be hellish indeed. 😀

      • June 26, 2013 at 11:45 pm

Ah, true! Problem is, Bono preaches to the planet about poverty and the like …. and then avoids paying taxes. I’ve no worries with monster rich megastars who don’t preach, but I do with hypocrites!

      conflicted emotions for me.

I am very excited about PBO’s visit to the African Continent but so wound-up and anxious about Prez Mandela’s health. I am overwhelmed by the juxtaposition of the two lives I revere & treasure so deeply
