I am the cock-eyed optimist – Yes, the Texas story is encouragIng, and Wendy Davis is a heroine. Markey won in Massachusetts. Our President leads the way on climate change – I hope the American public is slowly realizing that President Obama knows what he’s doing – saving the auto industry, saving healthcare – he analyzes a situation and chooses how to handle it.

As for the Supreme Court and voting rights – in the last election I had the distinct impression that voters held out in those long lines partly to show they wouldn’t be cowed by the Republicans’ voter suppression tactics. This action by the Court could spur a whole new surge of voting.

    • June 26, 2013 at 7:59 am

“This action by the Court could spur a whole new surge of voting.”

…especially when you see republicans led state leaders almost breaking their necks to get their voter id laws (re: voter suppression laws) in place almost as soon as the SCOTUS decision came down. The GOP is providing the cause to action for Democrats to get out to vote in 2014.

    • 9 jackiegrumbacher
      June 26, 2013 at 9:14 am

Oh, you can bet on the voter surge, Elly. The best strategy for the GOP would have been to maintain as much of the status quo as possible to lull people into complacency. But they can’t help themselves from overplaying their hand. Now they will up the ante on voter suppression and women rights and the roar back will be deafening. The genius GOP strategists have so much contempt for women and minorities that they routinely underestimate our will. But we will not be cowered, nor will be dutifully shut up and sit down. I for one an fighting mad and ready for battle.

They never give up this nonsense, do they? Well let me just say that I collected my own little “poll” on voter attitudes from hundreds of doors I knocked on for Ed Markey in Massachusetts. Main reason people supported Ed: because he will work hard to help President Obama move his agenda forward. Sure, there will always be some differences of opinion, some wishful thinking and some lack of information, but overall voters of all kinds agree with the President. Yes there is passion, but mostly there is TRUST in this President.
And I saw the same thing in New Hampshire in 2012 – so it’s not just blue Massachusetts.

Hf, this is another example of wishing won’t make it so. Pollsters can show you anything you want if you pay them enough. I haven’t seen any passion fading among Dems I know. Have you?

This is another one of the narrative the media want to push. That’s why they will push the scandal B.S. like it’s real, then when it’s proven to be GOP B.S. the media like Washington Post will remain silent. Hay WP the IRS investigated groups on the left, so please tell me where was the scandal? Why aren’t the WP, NYT going Darrell Issa?

It’s a great, inspirational morning! Few things were more gratifying than “Standing with Wendy”. Between the Texas demonstrations and Moral Mondays in North Carolina, we have a roadmap for a winning strategy. Since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, we know the tricks and traps are coming…we must prepare. As Former Marine, Tim Thompson of Tennessee said, “People have got to get up off their asses and fight!

“The People’s Filibuster” succeeds in Texas, anti-women #SB5 legislation fails

  17. June 26, 2013 at 8:31 am

Be prepared folks – the media is on full swing “We-are-MAD-at-Barack-Obama” mode today, and will probably that way for the rest of the week or year. Their little hero “Snowden” is fading in the minds of many. #IStandWithWendy was a huge and successful effort -despite MSM attempts to help GOP cheat by not covering the filibuster and then immediately reporting that the bill had passed. Ed Markey is now the “New” Senator from MA, and it is ON!!!

So despite their stupid tiresome polling and crappy narratives, the American people continue to plod ahead…It’s STILL about HOPE…It’s STILL about CHANGE, and they can’t stop this movement. Not now, not EVER!!!

As CEB wrote on the previous post- what a day was yesterday… First the SCOTUS ruling, then POTUS’ speech- that is STILL being ignored by media… and then the amazing Texas Democrats… and the bs tactics of the senate repubs trying to keep women quiet and compliant. Real Life is awesome 🙂

What concerns me is how many Americans remain today- uninformed or poorly informed of all that happened yesterday.

I too want to thank UT – for bringing the Texas fight here to us- I am so glad I didn’t miss this.

Thank you ut for your wonderful reporting! I went to bed last night before it was all over, but got up this morning and read through all the threads in chronological order. Just reading your info, I cried with joy and exhilaration. During this battle I thought of my precious daughter-in-law, another strong Texas woman, who used Planned parenthood for her medical needs before she married my son. She has said she would have been lost without them. I emailed her to tell her about what was going on. She got involved in watching the stream on KFAA……was thrilled.
I believe the sleeping have been awakened. Too long women and others have languished under the hegemony of the white male good old boys club. These guys think they can hide, and have for years, but now with social media, everything they do is out in the open.
UT, you are a treasure. You have my utmost respect and thanks……….

Exactly. That was incredible. I watched up around 12:30 after the whole vote debacle but didn’t know we would have a decisive win before I woke up. Amazing! I still cannot believe those creeps even attempted a vote after Senator Davis did 11 hours of filibuster. They could have made a “show” of attempting to stop it for their women hating supporters but allowed debate on the rule of order until time ran out and saved face that way. What a despicable, despicable group of people. And fucking stupid by doing it late and then falsifying government records.

      • June 26, 2013 at 9:36 am

I notice they didn’t start coming up with warnings until after she was into the 7th or 8th hour. Did it finally dawn on those chauvinists that Senator Davis would be able to filibuster for the full 13 hours? The other democratic senators did a good job in backing up Senator Davis with the inquiries and points of order and giving her some much needed breaks. The citizens took it on home with the People’s Filibuster in the last minutes. It was really something to watch!

When Scott Brown won the special election in MA in 2010 it was the Biggest News!!! Covered extensively, who can forget Scott’s awkward announcement that his daughters were “available?”

Last night the election was barely mentioned on Rachel—-Rachel who generally makes a big deal about elections, even claiming that the bit of music heralding results gives her chills.
Well, the new corporate Rachel, who, by the way is a resident of Markey’s state, Mass, hardly mentioned that Ed Markey is her new Senator.

If there is anyone here at TOD that has the slightest doubt about the combination of suppression of all things Obama and Democratic and the corresponding Noise about trash that promotes GOP/MSM/TP/Corporations, surely by now we are all getting it that we are under attack, right?

Point being is that it was a huge national story that none of them covered and it actually worked out 100% better with just using non-profit live stream and Twitter and social media than listening to their misreporting and pundit “analysis”.

I kind of felt the same way about PBO’s climate speech. Only the Weather Channel covered it extensively. Turns out they have more daily viewers then CNN and MSNBC so it worked out in the President’s favor.

ha! that really was amazing seeing how some alert people on twitter seemed to catch the switcheroo, and seemed our own utaustin was one of the ones involved in that. you can see without all this new media, how easy it would’ve been for republicans to simply make the switch without anyone noticing. sure, some democrats and their aides would’ve realized it, but “the news” would simply let republicans spew their talking points about it, let maybe one democrat yell about, then end their story with a hearty, “ho hum. that’s just the way it. moving on now to kardashian news…”

last night really was a great example of the changing landscape for politicians. we know the republicans and governor goodhair will simply do the same thing again and eventually get what they want with this bill, but i say it was “mission accomplished” for us last night. it’s also great how the letter “w” has been attached to texas for so long with the nepotistic george bush, but now “w” and texas for me means WENDY!

You are so right. Without Twitter and smart phones with cameras the AP story— that was PREWRITTEN!!!!– that came out at 12:05 saying the filibuster was defeated and the bill passed would have been the end of the story. OFA did an amazing job. I also saw how Senator ? (the one who used to be the Austin Mayor who did such a fantastic job in the last 45 minutes) in the rotunda used the same words that our President used for his GOTV telling the crowed to register voters, get engaged, etc. No one used to talk about registering voters and citizen action until The Age of Obama.

right on!! in my entire adult life of working on campaigns, we never had anything even remotely close to o.f.a. all set up as a well-oiled machine now. democratic party offices did some, but not nearly to the extent o.f.a. does, and the party work was on a steady decline after years of the clinton d.l.c. dominance of the party and their 12-state strategy (remember that mess?!?).

there are now thousands of people fanned out across the country who have been trained in this stuff, and beyond the 2 big obama elections, i think we’re about to see all that investment in time and people about to pay off in the 2014 midterms.
