The worst is yet to come.50 K unaccounted for and rescue efforts are being done by army since we have pathetic national disaster preparation teams. Most of them will pilgrims from other states. One part of India is under water and the other part is facing drought like conditions. Mother nature not being kind to us.

Oh,I don’t have family ior friends in that state. But it’s a big tragedy (rumors floating around 1000’s are dead, no one seems to know the actual no. including the govt) and most of the blame goes to greed since so many of those apartments were built in river banks illegally and permitted by corrupted officials and so many dams have been built with official blessings thereby damaging the ecosystem. It’s a wake-up call but we won’t care.

LP, the scenes are absolutely horrific! I hope all your family members are safe. I pray for all the people of India affected by these horrible floods. It’s situations like these that should make us pose and consider the effects of climate changes brought about by our material greed. It’s as if mother nature is angrily fighting back against the failure by us humans to stop abusing her. Tonight my thoughts and prayers are with the people of India.

The extra risk of dying for people with diabetes has fallen sharply since the mid 1990s, research suggests

It found in 2009 people with diabetes were 1.5 times more likely to die than those without it in a given period – down from two times as likely in 1996.

The study, in journal Diabetologia covering millions of Canadian and UK patients, concludes this may be due to better treatment and earlier diagnosis.

Diabetes UK says thousands of patients are still dying prematurely every year.

Kuwait’s government has said snap general elections will be held on 25 July, following the dissolution of the parliament by the country’s top court.

The decision was approved at an emergency meeting of the cabinet.

The Constitutional Court last week scrapped the parliament on procedural grounds and also threw out opposition challenges to the electoral system.

The opposition had boycotted general elections in December in protest at the rules decreed by the emir.

It was the second time in a year that the court has ordered the dissolution of parliament in the oil-rich Gulf state.

One thing I have noticed in the failure of the media….(Snowden contacted Greenwald in Feb.) that’s prior to the 3 months he was employed at BoozAllen……..why hasn’t there been a closer look at this obvious pre-orchestrated maleficence? Pathetic journalism on full display…

    • 26 nathkatun7
      June 21, 2013 at 12:23 am

Thanks LP for highlighting this glaring omission by the so called mainstream media. The question in my mind is: Did Edward Snowden purposely seek the job at BoozAllen at the request of Glenn Greenwald? This whole episode smells like a well planned collusion between Snowden, Greenwald and who ever made it possible for Snowden to get that sensitive job dealing with classified information.

      • June 21, 2013 at 12:41 am

We are on the same wavelength Nath! Explain to me why he was communicating w/ GG in Feb. prior to taking the Booz job? ……….also from your comment upthread…. I tried to cover the field in tunes that I enjoy for the TOD fam, but most older artists dont utilize soundcloud so it is hard to find HD quality embeds. Hope you enjoyed the selection. May I also suggest listen to the lyrics of the Macklamore song…one year ago he released this song/video on BET 106th & Park…….that’s when I knew the gay marriage fight was over….equality won.

        • 28 nathkatun7
          June 21, 2013 at 12:55 am

LP, the tunes were all marvelous! I totally enjoyed all the selections. Chipstick’s TOD was already great, but you guys (You, LL, UT and AMK) have added on some extra creative stuff – especially for some of us who are music lovers. By the way, I hope you are taking good care of yourself and getting plenty of rest. I hope you will be 100% well soon.

    • 29 jackiegrumbacher
      June 21, 2013 at 8:28 am

The media may not be covering it, but I’m certain the DOJ is on the job. “Placing” Snowden at Booz Allen is probably not within Greenwald’s scope. There’s a bigger presence behind this, one with great influence and big money. If they find that, they find the key to all of this. Snowden was just a manipulated little tool for a much bigger player.

I TOTALLY understand the “never mind” reaction. Give the harmonies a listen! Nothing will ever be EVERYONE’S cup O tea!!

A diamond necklace played the pawn
Hand in hand some drummed along, oh
    To a handsome mannered baton
    A blind class aristocracy
Back through the opera glass you see
The pit and the pendulum drawn
    Columnated ruins domino

Canvass the town and brush the backdrop
    Are you sleeping?

    Hung velvet overtaken me
    Dim chandelier awaken me
To a song dissolved in the dawn
The music hall a costly bow
The music all is lost for now
    To a muted trumpeter swan
    Columnated ruins domino

Canvass the town and brush the backdrop
    Are you sleeping, Brother John?

Dove nested towers the hour was
    Strike the street quicksilver moon
    Carriage across the fog
Two-Step to lamp lights cellar tune
The laughs come hard in Auld Lang Syne

The glass was raised, the fired-roast
The fullness of the wine, the dim last toasting
While at port adieu or die

A choke of grief heart hardened I
Beyond belief a broken man too tough to cry

    Surf’s Up
    Aboard a tidal wave
    Come about hard and join
The young and often spring you gave
    I heard the word
    Wonderful thing
    A children’s song

    Child, child, child, child, child
A child is the father of the man
    Child, child, child, child, child
A child is the father of the man
    A children’s song
Have you listened as they played
    Their song is love
And the children know the way
That’s why the child is the father to the man
    Child, child, child, child, child
    Child, child, child, child, child
Na na na na na na na na
    Child, child, child, child, child
That’s why the child is the father to the man
    Child, child, child, child, child

Arapaho, because these are private contractors they are more easily “bought” by someone with deep pockets. It seems to me that that’s how the ill-qualified Snowden was slipped in. Lots of money changed hands and Snowden himself was given boatloads of spending money. No matter where he is now or where he goes, he needs something to live on. Who’s paying him?

        Lovely.

Ha! Although I was “just a baby” at the time, I actually remember watching Paul Whiteman and his orchestra. He lived in my part of the country (NJ/PA) and also did the precursor show for American Bandstand out of Philly, called TV Teen Club and had on stars like Bobby Rydell and Leslie Uggams (it seemed like she was on all the early TV variety shows “way back then,” as I’m sure you know). He gave Dick Clark his on-air start on ABC. #YesIAmOldAndProudOfIt

        • 96 nathkatun7
          June 21, 2013 at 2:05 am

One of the reasons I love Jazz so much is because it promotes both individual expression (improvisation) as well as communal collaboration. I am sure what made those “jam sessions” so exciting was the synchronizing of extremely talented individual musicians to produce exciting harmonious music.

Man it flowed. Dudes would come in the middle of a set and blend right in. Then one would leave to go to a paying gig. Yuohg dudes would come in to see if they could get their chops. It was a helluva thing.

Help me out! I was looking for the words to express the feeling you got from listening to these “Jam sessions” of some of the most talented musicians in the world. The best I could come up with were : ” spiritual, harmonious improvisations.” I am sure you could do better than that. I think this what W.E.B. DuBois had in mind when he wrote about the “Gifts of Black Folks” to America, which included “the gift of story and song” and “the gift of the spirit.”

What’s happening in Texas is insane and makes me proud. Not of the GOP legislatures but the women. Hundreds of women have poured in for over six hours and protested, testified against SB5 and HB60 that strips away women’s reproductive rights. People have to be vigilant because this is what happens when republicans take over state legislatures. State legislatures and Congress is where real progress and real destruction takes place.

These laws are spreading like wildfire in Wisconsin, Ohio, North Dakota, South Dakota, Virginia and many more states that voted blue in presidential elections but are controlled by republicans in state legislatures. People need to be on the look out and protest them heavily.

So beyond proud of Texas women. Old and young are testifying about the horrors before Roe v. Wade was enacted and the horror of not having enough women’s clinics and funding for healthcare. We don’t know if the bills will become law, we’re legislated and governed by republicans pretty much everywhere but at least we’re fighting and not backing down.

It will be heaven on earth when Texas becomes purple and then blue.

    • June 21, 2013 at 1:09 am

UT, I read somewhere today that the big Obama alum group, created to turn Texas blue, announced a big rollout coming soon. Are you familiar w/ them? http://www.270strategies.com/who-we-are/jeremy-bird1

        June 21, 2013 at 1:26 am

Thanks. Yes, I’m familiar with them. The off shoot is called Battleground Texas and we’ve had meetings and organizing sessions and are laying the groundwork. It is going to be a huge uphill battle but we will get there. What the GOP is doing to education funding, food funding, low income families, minorities, and women is beyond horrific. They are trying to shut down hundreds of women’s clinics and leave only five open. FIVE!!!! How is that even remotely pro-life? Rural communities will be devastated. People who live in the cities will be crushed. When I say horror, I mean horror. We’ve been fighting all day and now they’re trying to shut our voices down. #HB60 has been trending all over the U.S. on Twitter. People are aware and more news shows need to cover this because it is coming to state legislatures all over the country.

    • 103 nathkatun7
      June 21, 2013 at 1:38 am

Good for you UT! I know people of your generation will turn Texas blue. People who are quick to dismiss Texas forget that, for example, my California has not always been Blue state. Richard Nixon was a Senator from California before he became Vice President and later President. Ronald Reagan, the father of the modern Conservatives, was twice elected governor of California and won the state twice as President. Republican Pete Wilson, one of the most hateful governors, so far as immigrants are concerned, served both as California’s U.S. Senator and twice as governor. If California could become a blue state, I am absolutely convinced that so would Texas. The demographics changed in California just as they are changing in Texas.

It would seem the reason for all the state abortion legislation is to force an appeal to the SCOTUS – while it still has a conservative majority. The aim being to overturn ROE V WADE

Wealthy women – including the wives of RWNJ republicans will ALWAYS be able to get a safe abortion – those who cannot afford to pay – as in the 1950s & 60s will die or be charged with a crime if they survive an illegal abortion.

UT, you and the women of Texas are fighting a heroic battle and deserve all of our support. As one who lost a family member, almost fifty years ago, because of the unsafe, back alley, abortion, I strongly support what you and the women of Texas are doing. It will really be a shame if in the United States, which is supposedly one of the most technologically advanced country, women, with unwanted pregnancies, have to go back to the back alley abortions of the pre Roe v. Wade period that took so many women’s lives.

As a man and a father, I just don’t understand why men law makers think that they know what’s best for women when it comes to reproduction. I was present when two of my daughters were born, but I never personally experienced the obvious excruciating pain their mother was going through. The little experience I had in the delivery room taught me a lesson: when it comes to reproductive issues I must defer to women because I know absolutely nothing about what it takes to carry a baby for nine months and what it takes to deliver that baby under such excruciating pain. Even more important for me, I hate the hypocrisy that stigmatizes women who have children out of wedlock thus forcing them to have unsafe abortions. In such situations we end up losing both the mother and the Conservative’s precious fetus. I wish these “holier than thou” Pro-lifers would explain to me how losing both the mother and the fetus is pro-life. The reality, whether the “holier than thou” pro-life hypocrites chose to admit, is that women with unwanted pregnancies will do what ever it takes to terminate those pregnancies. If the legal and safe options are foreclosed, they will find illegal and very risky and unsafe options. Just as they were doing before Roe v. Wade. The life threatening risk of unsafe abortions will primarily fall on the poor women because women with means will always be able to use their money to obtain safe abortions.

Men, women of all stripes and political affiliations are protesting these draconian bills. Conservative women who personally don’t believe in abortion for themselves are fighting so that women have a CHOICE in controlling their reproductive health.

Good Morning Early Birds…Extended Night Owls!!!

I am impressed by the women in Texas who are demanding to have their voices heard about the right to choose. 4:00AM!!! That’s really sending a message and making sure that this issue gets the national attention it deserves.

Also thanks LP for the Night Owl post and to Yardarm for taking the later night DJ shift.

“Some disabled workers paid just pennies an hour – and it’s legal”

    http://openchannel.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/06/20/19062348-some-disabled-workers-paid-just-pennies-an-hour-and-its-legal?lite

    —–

One of the nation’s best-known charities is paying disabled workers as little as 22 cents an hour, thanks to a 75-year-old legal loophole that critics say needs to be closed.

Goodwill Industries, a multibillion-dollar company whose executives make six-figure salaries, is among the nonprofit groups permitted to pay thousands of disabled workers far less than minimum wage because of a federal law known as Section 14 (c). Labor Department records show that some Goodwill workers in Pennsylvania earned wages as low as 22, 38 and 41 cents per hour in 2011.

Section 14 (c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which was passed in 1938, allows employers to obtain special minimum wage certificates from the Department of Labor. The certificates give employers the right to pay disabled workers according to their abilities, with no bottom limit to the wage.

Most, but not all, special wage certificates are held by nonprofit organizations like Goodwill that then set up their own so-called “sheltered workshops” for disabled employees, where employees typically perform manual tasks like hanging clothes.

The non-profit certificate holders can also place employees in outside, for-profit workplaces including restaurants, retail stores, hospitals and even Internal Revenue Service centers. Between the sheltered workshops and the outside businesses, more than 216,000 workers are eligible to earn less than minimum wage because of Section 14 (c)…

I am in tears; so any emotions going through me. Horror at this latest battle in the War on Women; pride that so many women stood up and demanded that they be heard; so thankful that the hateful bills have been pushed back until later; pumped up to know that woman and the men who love and support them are not done. THIS is community activism at its best. The mofos thought that they could pull a fast one during a time when people would not be aware or unable to participate, but Perry and the others over-reached and pissed off Texas women and now the world knows about their evil-doing.
UT, thank you so much for letting us know about this through all of the tweets and thank you for being such a warrior. It is sad that we have to re-fight battles that we thought we had won, but this shows that we must be ever-vigilant to preserve our rights. I live in a state where the Repub. Gov. is tring to break unions, privatize public institutions, and other hateful things that are against the public good. The actions of the Texas women and their supporters show when can be done when citizens become active.
I am so full. Cannot write any more.

    Happy First Day it is!
Thank you UT for all the tweets…..so damn proud of Texas women.
I cry for all the young women who died or were maimed due to coat hangers. The horror of it all, no man can ever understand this pain.

When it comes to women’s rights, many of congressMEN have antiquated — almost pre-historic — views.
