Germany Welcomes The Obamas!

First Lady Michelle Obama, U.S. President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her husband Joachim Sauer attend the dinner given in honour of President Obama at the Orangerie of Schloss Charlottenburg palace on June 19, 2013 in Berlin, Germany.

Those who love motorcade videos – pretty much everyone on TOD!

Ulrich Grillo, president of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), toasts his glass next to U.S. President Barack Obama

Roland Nelles: In his speech at the Brandenburg Gate, Obama covered a broad gamut of issues — from the fall of the Berlin Wall to the Arab Spring. Freedom and the fight against poverty — those were the main topics the president used in Berlin to win over his listeners. Obama stands for a better America. In contrast to his predecessor George W. Bush, Obama doesn’t try to impose his terms on the world — he seeks cooperation. He tries to find common ground with other countries and people rather than seeking to emphasize differences. That alone is of particular value in a world in which ever more fanatics are spouting off about some “conflict of civilizations.”

Obama tries to promote his policies abroad. He doesn’t stray from his positions, but he does explain himself and he tries to address peoples’ concerns comprehensively — especially pertaining to something like the NSA’s Prism spying program. He noted in Germany that the electronic eavesdropping program has saved lives — in Germany, as well. He doesn’t arrogantly skate around criticism. Instead he fights for trust. By doing so, he deserves it.

That’s what you are missing folks, for not understanding German.

In the 6 minute video of the “greeting of the guard” ceremony, the German commentator (just about 10-15 seconds in) managed to enlighten us about Clinton’s visit (1994), who *spoke to about 50,000 people”.

    Yeah, right.

    MSNBC is bi-polar nuts.
On the good side, they are sponsoring Free Health Clinics again.
The bad—they’re giving airtime to idiotic RW Niall Fergusen.

And now Dopey Tweety asks if PBO’s relationship with Angela Merkel makes it easier for Hillary? WTF!!! Indira Ghandi, Golda Meir, Margaret thatcher, Dilma Roussef, Cristina Kirchener.

Tons of women past and present are/were leaders.
maybe we just don’t much like HRC.

Couldn’t believe the Merkel/Hillary leap either! What??????? That was just insane——Tweety was just desperate in that connection. What is with this whole entire news media constantly hyping Hillary? I have never seen anything like it. Do they all think they have a future in her administration? Are there bonuses paid by the corporate network owners for the daily Hillary accolades?

I doubt it, considering he was so anti-Hillary back in 2007-08. I think RIGHT NOW, the corporate backers have decided that Hillary is the best best for their financial interests – she will maintain the status quo of economic inequality, just as Bill did, and push back any regulation that PBO implemented. But just as the corporate backers wanted Romney and got a nice heaping spoonful of STFU from the public, it may not be the cakewalk for Hillary that many anticipate.

Actually…….brings back fond memories of Germany. When we visited our Army son in 1990, we were in Wurzburg, and Steve saw some German polizei just standing on a corner. He stopped dead still, and almost started shaking. He just said “Polizei! You don’t mess around with them!” I know American GIs were told not to get in trouble.

Reagan opened the doors to the mental hospitals, by taking away funding. Now we have insane people walking the streets when they should be institutionalized. Years about a psychiatrist by the name of Naeem Akbar wrote that he believed racism is a mental illness. I agree. Maybe it can be cured and maybe it can’t.

This reminded me of a comment a friend from northern VA said to another good friend there. This second friend mentioned told me what the other friend said about PO. Paraphrased, it was the exact same message this KKK guy said. This woman is highly educated, intelligent, calls herself a caring and compassionate Christian, but then makes that kind of comment about our President. Since I learned about this, I keep thinking that this is such proof and textbook case of so many people being totally consumed and blinded with hate and fear and intolerance of this AA President. So, so sad.

Afternoon. Home safely from my weekly visit with my mother. Was listening to Rev. Al and he finished his show today with a major rant about something we talk about all the time here–a different standard for this President as opposed to the previous Democratic presidents. He called some people out and laid everything on the line. He’s “sick and tired” of the goal posts being moved and the completely different standard for this first AA president. He invited “those people” (didn’t say the name, but listening with my third ear, I heard Clinton) to come on his show and talk with him/debate him. I was cheering loudly! 🙂

I have seen Angela Merkel smile more this weekend and today than at any other time. Pundits kept talking about how she and PBO didn’t have a “warm” relationship. Today, that meme has to be put out to pasture. I believe that they have over the past four years built their relationship in a step by step way……no looking into each others’ souls, as GWB did with Putin……that was silly. Here we have two adults working for their countries and trying to work together.

Every time ..the pundits say the PBO is aloof…that no one likes him…or that he does not get along well with others….is an attempt to paint him as the ‘OTHER” or say that he is out of his league…that his head is under water…that he does not belong…
racist undertones…spoken in code…but many of us hear it and feel it….

then they bring out the House Negros like Brazile….to try to knock him down and give credence to those racist voices…

    From HP

Former CIA agent Valerie Plame said Wednesday that she views NSA leaker Edward Snowden as neither a hero nor a traitor, but that Americans should be grateful that he brought the conversation about liberty and security to the national forefront.

“I don’t think [Snowden’s] a hero, I don’t condone what he did. At the same time he’s certainly not a traitor as he was called by Dick Cheney,” Plame told HuffPost Live host Mike Sacks. “In a way, we as U.S. citizens owe Edward Snowden a thank you for having brought this issue to the forefront and so that we can begin to have a serious and genuine conversation about these issues.”

Plame also rolled her eyes at Cheney labeling Snowden a traitor, given the Bush administration’s involvement in leaking her identity to columnist Robert Novak.

“The irony of people like Dick Cheney or Karl Rove whining and bemoaning the fact of the leak of intelligence — given my history and certainly Dick Cheney’s intimate involvement with the betrayal of my CIA identity — is really something,” she said.

Plame called for the resignation of Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, saying that “as a former intelligence officer” she finds it “astounding” that upwards of 60 to 70 percent of the United States’ intelligence budget is spent on private contractors.

“One question might be, ‘Why hasn’t the Director of National Intelligence Clapper resigned?’ He is ultimately responsible for the safeguarding of these secrets,” she said. “How do you propose to keep secrets if you have that high a contracting force? Where is their loyalty? It’s not necessarily going to be to their country, to the United States, it’s going to be to the person writing their paycheck.”

Plame said she has “great respect” for journalist Glenn Greenwald, who broke the Snowden story, saying “he has written eloquently for years on these issues in a very serious, sustained manner.”

She added that she believes the conversation should focus less on Snowden and more on the questions he raised, since “his fate is already foregone.”

“He will be abused, he will be punished,” Plame said of Snowden. “Perhaps he could have done it in a different way, but that’s not the conversation we should be having.”

I’m becoming a broken record, but again—-I cannot stand Chuck Todd. I think he’s the worst. Every single report he does on NBC is always always negative slanted re. President Obama. He just did a report on Berlin——all photos and vids were selected to present Obama in an unflattering light—-showing him sweating and wiping his brow, constantly showing the bulletproof glass in a glaring manner as he aired Reagan saying “Tear down this wall”, showing the audience fanning and sweating, saying it was a scant crowd compared to Obama’s last appearance there (without explanation), said no chants this time, saying he got hostile questions from German press etc. etc. And then wraps it up by saying that the Obamas leave for another trip—to Africa—in about a week. And he smirks through it all. I think he’s the most disgusting, disingenuous reporter. How he got that position at NBC, political director, setting the tone for all their political reports, no college degree, no journalism degree—–I have no idea.

are you being rhetorical in asking why chuck toad has that job? if you believe that all the major “news” is now owned by a small group of billionaires and using the news to keep people voting against their self interest and in the interests of the billionaires, as i believe, then chuck toad’s continued employment and promotion makes perfect sense. he’s not paid to provide journalism. he’s there to be a propagandist for the billionaire agendas, and at that, he’s doing an excellent job, wouldn’t you say?

Todd started at The Hotline which was founded by Doug Bailey. Bailey was a Republican consultant who died about a week ago. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) gave a tearful speech on the floor of the Senate a day or two ago praising Bailey saying he would have had no career in politics without Bailey. Bailey was Todd’s mentor until Russert hired him at NBC. Todd must know how to play the corporate game. We all know people such as Todd.

Dotster you are asking: “How he got that position at NBC, political director, setting the tone for all their political reports”

Well, isn’t that the point? 4morefor44 is 100% right on this issue. These corporate networks WANT people like Chuck Todd working for them. They hire propaganda tools, not journalists. So a journalism degree in the age of Obama’s Presidency is not needed, or in fact, probably not even welcomed in these circles.

Haven’t you heard? The Clintons are going to fix everything.

Bill already did: Telecom bill gave the media to the RW and profit takers; deregulation of the banks and no regulation on credit default swaps led directly to the financial meltdown of 2008; NAFTA sent jobs away from America in droves.

Oh, and Clinton and Gore can take credit for Snowden – they put privatization on steroids, Bush put it on mega steroids but it’s all PBO’s fault.

But she’s a progressive lion. Yeah right. Only when they campaign (if you count racist fearmongering ‘progressive’), and they govern happily and comfortably from a mega business-friendly RW position.

I want the Hillary supporters to understand, that we have seen POTUS take to much B.S. from the rightwing nuts, we won’t accept it from Hillary supporters, give this President the respect due him and that goes to Bill Clinton too, Al Gore, Donna Brazile, if Hillary runs she will need us. So they better treat POTUS like gold.

My 2 cents, Mrs Clinton may not run. If she does, it will not be with as many supporters as many thinks she has; think PBO’s massive network. V.p. Biden now, that’s a different story. Remember during the convention how some were saying Bill really stepped up for PBO, well I thought he was just doing it in self-interest, not for the good of PBO. Piggy back on PBO’s network when time comes for his wife who I am suspect he is pushing to run, then he’ll be back in a position of power. I freely admit to cynicism. Can’t warm to him..
