No, in the 2008 campaign, they were estimated to be worth close to a billion $$, so of course he is entitled to collect all that money, wouldn’t want them to fall through the cracks in the bottom, would we? Hey, he’s entitled! Mofo.

Nena, I am sooooo not a fan of John McCain, however, I defend his collecting of retirement/disability/SSA; those are all earned benefits.

SSA – is a retirement insurance program that he paid into. If SSA is changed to a means-tested program, that will be the end of SSA; rich folks are not going to sustain a “welfare” program.

Military retirement – he earned it based on 20+ years of service.

VA disability – he’s entitled to it based on service connected injuries. Little known fact is that up until 2004, military members who retired at 20 or more years that also had a sevice connected disability, had their military retirement reduced by the amount they received in disability pay. Beginning in 2004, the amount deducted was reduced by 10% per year; effective Jan 2014, disabled retirees will collect their full retirement pay.

Good afternoon. Only time for a quick note. It is O/T, but have to share. Few weeks ago my husband (R, remember) got his notice that his insurance premium (supplemental to Medicare) was going up. I asked him how much?**************$7.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just got home few minutes ago (from my weekly volunteer job at Dem Headquarters). He had gotten the mail and it was obvious he was so anxious to tell me my notice came of how much my Mutual of Omaha was going up……he said 10%. I asked how much is that? He said, “$8.00.” I said, “That’s
not bad at all. Didn’t you tell me few weeks ago yours went up $7.00?” I repeated that I didn’t think either one was bad……..quite reasonable, in fact. He said nothing after that and left the room. Gees almighty. I just don’t understand these Republicans, my husband included.

what a wonderful speech by FLOTUS – her love for the youth of the world will be remembered long… the thing republicans will never get about President Obama & First Lady Michelle- is how empowering others -as they consistently do- is why they are so well loved- they are so nurturing- they are truly what healthy leadership is all about.

Being a partisan player in the world of professional journalism has provided the right with considerable power to set the news agenda. Traditional journalists get their cues about what to cover from official sources and can dismiss some as ludicrous if they fail to meet an evidentiary standard and are opposed by other official sources. Fox and the conservative media, on the other hand, can reduce complex issues to one-word battle criesā€”ā€œACORN!ā€ ā€œSolyndra!ā€ ā€œBenghazi!ā€ā€”which Republican politicians gleefully echo. Then those same politicians and right-wing media ā€œwatchdogsā€ badger traditional media for having a ā€œliberal biasā€ if they do not cover the stories as well. By the time a hyperpartisan congressman like House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman Darrell Issa, a Republican from California, is gaveling hearings into session, the Washington press corps is not about to say, ā€œHold it! This is ridiculous.ā€ So it is that the nonstories that come to dominate news cycles invariably benefit the right.

Let’s remember that Bill Clinton was all for the Telecom Bill of 1996 that he gleefully signed, deregulating the news industry and creating this monster.

Just like the Gramm bill that deregulated the banks and led directly to the economic collapse in 2008. Bill Clinton worked on that in the afternoon while being impeached in the morning – no problem with that bill, either.

And the racist disrespect he and his wife waged against PBO is the single reason the Republicans get away with it now.

Instead of poking the President with a stick on what he ‘would have done brilliantly’ as CiC, Bill Clinton should STFU. I wish his wife would do the gracious thing and not run, but I have no hope that her ambition would be trumped by patriotism and decency.

Neither Fox News nor MSNBC has its own teams of reporters to send out to break news stories. Slogans like ā€œWe Report, You Decideā€ are rooted in fantasy. Cable channels have program hosts, producers, and guest bookers. They look at what others are reporting, and then they invite people to talk about the politics of the day. At their best, they invite interesting and diverse guests who might even disagree with one another—as happened on Ed Schultz’s MSNBC show during the debate about whether to include a public option in the Affordable Care Act. At their worst, they feature Sean Hannity and Karl Rove abandoning all the touchstones of realism and engaging in extended preelection discussions about how all the polls are wrong and Mitt Romney will win by a landslide.

    Our Michelle is just wonderful!

A young boy was rendered speechless when he met First Lady Michelle Obama in Dublin on Monday.

The boy, named only as Billy, was dumbstruck with shyness when he met her backstage at the Gaiety Theatre.

He was among scores of youngsters invited to the theatre for a special performance of Riverdance.

Earlier, Mrs Obama and her daughters Malia and Sasha had visited Trinity College in the Irish capital.

Rebecca Morgan, aged 11 and a pupil in Moneygall National School in County Offaly – US President Barack Obama’s ancestral homeland – revealed her classmate’s embarrassment.

“She is so beautiful and very tall,” the 11-year-old said.

“She looks even prettier in real life than on TV.

Layla was right…there was some SERIOUS body language happening there! One clue…Putin was NOT alpha. At the end of the whole thing, PBO gives a little nod as if to say, “Let’s blow this popsicle stand” When they stand to leave….PBO towers over Putin and, to my eyes, PBO is the one in total control. Did my eyes deceive me or did you guys see the same thing I did?

THREE STRIKES ON THE HOUSE GOP ON IMMIGRATION AND YOU’RE OUT

    ————————————————————–

According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

At this point, the hard right faction in the House GOP that opposes immigration reform is in the driver’s seat. The question is, when will House Republican leadership take the reins and find a way to enact common sense reform? There’s still time, but not much. House Republicans’ vote to deport DREAMers was strike one; the House Judiciary Committee’s vote for the SAFE Act will be strike two; and if they block the broad reform once the Senate acts, it will be strike three for the GOP. If they strike out, the Republican brand with Latino and immigrant voters will go from damaged to doomed.

O, my Heart.. Has anyone else just received a letter from The White House, thanking them for writing?? I have, today, (though I wrote ages ago) and I have reason to believe the signature of President Obama is genuine, not computer generated, as the ink is shiny, and looks as if it is hand written, with a little overlapping of the lines on the O. http://www.irishtimes.com/news/obama-s-irish-ancestry-highlighted-during-first-family-s-visit-to-trinity-1.1431607

Genealogists can say more about the Irish ancestry of US President Barack Obama than about former presidents such as John F Kennedy, according to the genealogist who showed the Obama family tree to Michelle Obama and her daughters at Trinity College Dublin today.

Fiona Fitzsimons and Helen Moss of Eneclann, a university spin-out company researched President Obama’s Irish ancestry from Falmouth Kearney, president Obama’s second great-grandfather to his seventh great-grandfather, Joseph Kearney. John Kearney, who was a distant cousin of the president, went on to become the Provost of Trinity College Dublin, and later Church of Ireland Bishop of Ossory.

Ms Fitzsimons showed the family tree to the Obamas. ā€œIt’s a family history that goes back a very, very long way,ā€ she said afterwards. ā€œWe can actually say more, with absolute certainty, about the Irish ancestry of the Obamas than we can for figures like JFK or Ronald Reagan or even Bill Clinton.ā€ She said the teenage girls were absolutely delightful. ā€œThe girls are obviously very close to their mum. They were asking loads of questions.ā€

    That’s pretty darn cool šŸ™‚

  25. June 17, 2013 at 5:25 pm

I finally got a chance to listen to the President’s speech at Waterfront Hall.

Man, I really had forgotten how we (in Europe) thought “The Troubles” basically would be with us (just an hour’s flight away) forever.

In 1994 I visited MetEirann in Dublin for the first time … while the “Good Friday accords” were still years away. Belfast was a city you didn’t go to anyway, unless you were an accredited journalist (yeah, those were the days) to cover the hostilities.

The young people in this Hall probably have no living memory of this; but they do have of the peace that *is*, and that probably isn’t perfect (as the President indicated) – they still have to *work* at it.

Fascinating speech; as many are used to express here: “I am glad I am watching history unfold under Obama’s Presidency”.
