    The kenyan muslin’s ‘parting gift’.

President Barack Obama has chosen a high-powered Washington lawyer with extensive experience in all three branches of the government to be the State Department’s special envoy for closing down the military-run prison at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.

Clifford Sloan is the pick to reopen the State Department’s Office of Guantanamo Closure, shuttered since January and folded into the department’s legal adviser’s office when the administration, in the face of congressional obstacles, effectively gave up its attempt to close the prison.

A formal announcement of Sloan’s appointment was expected Monday, according to officials briefed on the matter. They spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the appointment publicly before the formal announcement.

A rare Sunday afternoon statement by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence responds to news reports that Jerry Nadler (D-NY) was told in a Congressional briefing that the NSA could listen to Americans’ phone calls without a warrant:

The statement that a single analyst can eavesdrop on domestic communications without proper legal authorization is incorrect and was not briefed to Congress. Members have been briefed on the implementation of Section 702, that it targets foreigners located overseas for a valid foreign intelligence purpose, and that it cannot be used to target Americans anywhere in the world.

Here’s what confused Nadler. While it is true that an American communication can be accidentally intercepted after an analyst makes a decision to intercept a foreign communication, it would be just plain illegal for an analyst who believes that his or her target is an American to begin the interception process, the content interception process, without a FISA warrant.

OT. As I look at the President and his family I thought how sad that FLOTUS and the girls will not be able to do that girly shopping thingy for a long time. No more cayching a sale at Target or Kohl’s, checking out shoes or dresses in the mall or a quick snack at a food court to do some people watching. – smh –

      June 16, 2013 at 11:20 pm

Maybe I’m misreading the article but although the headline is encouraging there is a timeline and by late this evening zdnet is backing away from their earlier backing off. I’m more confused than ever.

ZDNET confused me. I KNOW everyone spies on everyone else. That’s why they call them SPIES. For God’s sake, we wouldn’t have won the Revolutionary War without spies. What concerned me about the zdnet article (and I read it several times) was whether they were agreeing or debunking the claim that we listen to phone calls without a warrant. These are the kinds of issues that give the LWNJ’s a chance to live to fight another day.

Jefferson Obama can’t stop tweeting about war with Syria. I understand his position, but this is a setup from Russia.
Today, Iran sent over 4k Revolutionary Guard to fight with Assad and his Forces.
Russia also has Spetsnaz special ops team there.
I don’t think Jefferson Obama understands the gravity if the situation.

I don’t think America getting deeply involved will Ameliorate the situation.
That’s what Russia wants, us to become committed to a ground war.
Then, Iran gets involved, suddenly we are fighting Iran and Syria.
I am sorry for Syrias losses, but so far the President is right, this may just have to play itself out, as painful as that is to watch.
This is a trap, and it’s being sprung by Putin.

(JAMISON CITY, Pa.) β€” Four central Pennsylvania residents said they used only a rope and a flashlight during a wild chase to rescue a young bear whose head had been stuck in a plastic jar for at least 11 days.

The frightened but powerful bruin fell into a swimming pool at least twice during the ordeal, according to a report Saturday in the Press Enterprise of Bloomsburg . But the group eventually yanked off the jar and set the animal free.

β€œI thought, β€˜No one is going to believe us,’” said Morgan Laskowski, 22, the bartender at the Jamison City Hotel and a member of the impromptu bear-wrangling team.

Area residents first spotted the 100-pound bruin with its head in a red jar on June 3, but it eluded game wardens. The animal was attracted to the container because it appeared to have once contained cooking oil.

β€œHe put his head in, and had a problem,” said Mike Jurbala, 68, another rescuer.

Jurbala saw the bear Thursday night as he was leaving the bar (me: ahhhh the bear was drunk!) at the Jamison City Hotel. He called Jeff Hubler, a local employee of the state Game Commission who had been among those trying to capture it for days with a lasso.

The two teamed up with Laskowski and her mother, bar owner Jody Boyle, to follow the bear through the darkness.

Here is where I started cracking up!!!!!
β€œYou knew where he was because you could hear him banging into things,” Jurbala said
