            No RN. Neonates are my specialty. Congrats on your daughter though. Medicine is richer for the contribution of women.

              My goddaughter is a surgeon, with a year left on her residency. We’ve had very interesting discussions of the state of American health care. She says that most of the developed nations (and some Third World) pay for all medical training. It varies from country to country of course, but there is always a component of a period of time you ‘serve’ where you’re needed.

              Her point: if young American doctors weren’t saddled with crippling debt, many more talented young people would choose to become doctors, particularly women. And if the crippling costs of a medical education were effectively eliminated, doctors would choose what the LOVE to do, rather than what they have to do to pay off their loans and make their ‘investment’ worthwhile. Read: less dermatologists and more doctors in rural areas and better general practitioners.

              Her assertions were confirmed. I remember reading about a study about 5 years ago about the choices women make in the medical field. It was not about apples-to-apples: a female cardiac surgeon compared to a male cardiac surgeon, for example. The study said yes – women doctors make less than male doctors. But it was because, if given the opportunity to make a choice, women chose to work in low income clinics, charity medical work like Doctors Without Borders, family medicine. They were willing to serve their community through medicine, rather than just make money. That is, if they could afford to make those choices.

                There used to be a program where the government would reduce your debt for every year you spent serving in an underserved community. It’s one way they got doctors onto Indian reservations. I don’t know how many took advantage of it, though.

                  The scholarship program was renewed in the ACA bill. For four years service in an undeserved community you get tuition and a stipend for four years of medical school. I had a National Health Service scholarship and served 4 years at a Bureau of Prisons facility. Indian Health Service also counts.

                  • June 17, 2013 at 1:11 am

                    Thanks, I thought so. One of my favorite shows, Northern Exposure, was based on it. I wonder how many eligible people take advantage of it.

              • June 16, 2013 at 8:28 pm

                Very thoughtful commentary. I do agree that medicine should be available for those with the aptitude and desire and the training should not be crippling. Over the years I have seen committed MD’s in both genders, but I am not in the US system so I don’t know what motivates. I believe many, male and female start out with the desire to serve but overwhelming debt does drive a different agenda. Congrats for your daughter. You must be filled with pride for her achievements.

      Later on, Edison worked with JP Morgan and was hell bent on DC power only.

      June 16, 2013 at 9:38 am

      My research for work has led me to a little background on Edison. He was a son of a bitch when it came to business, screwing a lot of inventors including Tesla. He made a verbal agreement with Tesla for some important invention (I admit I forget which) to pay him $50,000 when it was finished. When Tesla tried to collect Edison told him, “You don’t understand American humor”. He did this sort of thing throughout his career.

      This does not detract from his obvious genius and one of the great quotes of all time: “Invention is 10% iinspiration and 90% perspiration”.

      But a ruthless son of a bitch nonetheless.

        Gawd, they’re vile people.

        “Given that we come from Kansas, it’s much easier to say, ‘Call your former governor,'” said Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R), referring to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. “You say, ‘She’s the one. She’s responsible. She was your governor, elected twice, and now you reelected the president, but he picked her.'” Huelskamp said.

            The Repubs can feed this BS to their low information voters. I wish that the Administration would have a booklet printed and sent to every household explaining the benefits of Obamacare,. But, will low information voters read it? No, they won’t because they like to cut of their nose to spite their face….pathetic.

          • June 16, 2013 at 12:37 pm

            The only way some will wake up to the facts is when they see friends, family, and neighbors reaping the benefits. They won’t believe anything except their own poisoned sources of information.

        Hopefully the Dems will be on the ball enough to campaign on the fact that the #GOPs in question didn’t have answers and couldn’t be bothered to get them so people should vote for those (Dems) who knew how to answer credibly. ๐Ÿ™„

        Ooooooh, I’m coming VERY close to doing just that! But! I think everything is saved now on to a couple external drives, was trying to treble-save a few things to be sure, to be sure, but the burp suggests that might not be possible.

              Supporting evidence, CC? ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰

              COMPUTERS – A SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.

              ‘House’ for instance, is feminine: ‘la casa.’
              ‘Pencil,’ however, is masculine: ‘el lapiz.’

              A student asked, ‘What gender is ‘computer’?’

              Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether they thought ‘computer’ should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

              The men’s group decided that ‘computer’ should definitely be of the feminine gender (‘la computadora’), because:

              1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;

              2 The native language they use to communicate with other computers is (THIS GETS BETTER!) incomprehensible to everyone else;

              3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and

              4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

              The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine (‘el computador’), because:

              1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;

              2. They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves;

              3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and

              4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

              THE WOMEN WON!

    Good news- Rubio says that this President has bungled the Syria situation and then was asked what would he do.
    He says, he would identify the rebels on the ground, make sure they’re not Al Qaeda, support them. Then he says, in so doing hopefully This will lead to Assad being over thrown. Then he says, that the friendly forces can then take over.
    It’s that easy!
    And most if not all, is what this President is already doing.
    Lol!

    Wonderful NYTimes editorial on Obamacare. Timothy Egan—titled:Million Anecdote Baby.
    Except for the requisite schadenfreude swipe at POTUS——passive presidency—— this article tells the truth about 30 Million+ happy new Americans.
    This article is directly below bitter hag’s latest screed and huge photo of The Clintons.
    NYTimes is no better than Fox news. Polite propaganda .

    Still, the Egan piece gets it exactly right and I hope someone at TOD with skills can list it for all of us to savor.
