This is your consciousness raising night owl thread.
1st? 🙂
Winner!
Thank you LL! (Takes a bow)
Congrats hopefruit!
Thanks sabreen! 🙂
Hey-o!
Thanks LL. Those songs bring back many memories for me.
Chris Hayes should take a listen to them. He might learn something.
I think you are asking alot. I don’t think people like him and GG think they can learn anything from anyone else. They have the biggest egos and small brains.
Sorry Chris Hayes won’t learn anything, there is no hope for anyone who think that Edward Snowden belong in the same breath as MLK, Rosa Park, Nelson Mandela.
Thank you LL for this memoriam. Revives many many memories.
LL, these old cherished songs are a wonderful thing to post for us. Feel like crying. But I shall not cry … I will just remember. Thank you.
guys like chris hayes will fall on their sword. most people are too smart to fall for propaganda. the people that believe this type of crap already have their own agenda and are just looking for confirmation.
remember cornell west and tavis smiley and their anti obama tour spreading lies…well its just a matter so time.
“@ritaag: @JeffersonObama And Greenwald should keep his mouth shup about MLK considering that he defended a KKK member”
Oh LL, I have never heard that particular recording of Mahalia Jackson. That was so moving.
This is what I like about liberals. We can always, eventually, get to the bright side. Ha!
I learned a fun fact about our imaginary friend today — NSA runs the National Cryptology Museum. It has a gift shop. Upcoming exhibit: Middle school and high school kids’ projects on the Navajo Code Talkers of World War II.
Well, Kat, darlin’ friend, this wouldn’t be the first time you put a smile on me face! When I hit your “It has a gift shop,” I nearly fell over laughing. Our imaginary friend the NSA has a gift shop (albeit its Nat’l Cryptology Museum). Plus, I am wild about the Navajo Code Talkers! Thank you very much. 🙂
I’m sketching out tomorrow’s essay. Let’s just say I’m pissed.
Looking forward to reading it. We are pissed too, LL!
Yes we are, hf2 !!
Thank you, LL.
I am in sync now after listening to all of my favorite songs. Once again music has calmed the beast as I now wait for sweet sleep.
Lisa, staying strong as your encouraging words suggested on the previous post.
At the end of the day, POB is still in the WH. That keeps me smiling.. Waking up to Rise and Shine here keeps me going…
PEACE
LL, you touched my soul tonight – thank you!!! These bring back sooooo many memories of me coming of age and of my parents struggle. The fight is NOT over.
I look forward to your essay tomorrow.
Thank you Chipsticks and TOD family for keeping us sane!
God bless President Obama and his Administration.
FORWARD!
Wonderful and meaningful songs!
Ok good people, I’m off to bed. See everyone tomorrow.
night liblib. thanks for the uplifting music to see us through the evening.
Keep on Pushing
Love this song and play it often.
Me too!

I’m glad I live in a country with people who are vigilant in defending civil liberties. But as I listen to the debate about the disclosure of two government programs designed to track suspected phone and e-mail contacts of terrorists, I do wonder if some of those who unequivocally defend this disclosure are behaving as if 9/11 never happened — that the only thing we have to fear is government intrusion in our lives, not the intrusion of those who gather in secret cells in Yemen, Afghanistan and Pakistan and plot how to topple our tallest buildings or bring down U.S. airliners with bombs planted inside underwear, tennis shoes or computer printers.
Yes, I worry about potential government abuse of privacy from a program designed to prevent another 9/11 — abuse that, so far, does not appear to have happened. But I worry even more about another 9/11. That is, I worry about something that’s already happened once — that was staggeringly costly — and that terrorists aspire to repeat.
I worry about that even more, not because I don’t care about civil liberties, but because what I cherish most about America is our open society, and I believe that if there is one more 9/11 — or worse, an attack involving nuclear material — it could lead to the end of the open society as we know it. If there were another 9/11, I fear that 99 percent of Americans would tell their members of Congress: “Do whatever you need to do to, privacy be damned, just make sure this does not happen again.” That is what I fear most.
Df, I read this friedman column and I have to say it’s the first time in a long time that I’ve actually agreed with everything the guy says. The current band of emos are naive, petulant children who have no idea of the mess they’re causing. I’m sick of them.
Wonderful post, wonderful music, great artists who evoke awareness of great courage.
This was burned in my heart before I was potty trained.
So very powerful. Makes ya breathless.
Yeah. He was an idol to the “old folks” when I was a shorty. 🙂
🙂
http://immasmartypants.blogspot.com/2013/06/all-true-vows.html I hope she won’t mind just this once….
All the True Vows
are secret vows,
the ones we speak out loud
are the ones we break.
There is only one life
you can call your own
and a thousand others
you can call by any name you want.
Hold to the truth you make
every day with your own body,
don’t turn your face away.
Hold to the truth
at the center of the image
you were born with,
don’t turn your face away.
…Remember,
in this place
no one can hear you
and out of the silence
you can make a new promise
it will kill you to break,
that way you’ll find out
what it is real and what is not.
– David Whyte
This is truly a night for the poets and the songbirds!
Oh, I love that one so much. And, to start off, I’m lookin’ up at the wall above my desk and there’s the same copy of Abraham’s portrait I’m lookin’ at. And we’ve got John and Martin and Bobby in all of our (old) hearts. It’s like we knew all of them, isn’t it? They shed their blood, and they’re like our blood.
One of the most heartbreaking songs ever, Yardarm. I always weep when I hear it–so much hope gone because of hate.
I know jackie, believe me I know.
Nina Simone: Freedom
Don’t know what’s wrong tonight. I most be in a zone?
I heard this for the first time in the late 60’s.
Strange Fruit
Well, that was fun. Just checked my Twitter interactions and so far tonight I’ve been called a “fool,” a “troll,” and “no threat intellectually.”
It’s a banner day when ya can piss off a bunch of ’em! Ah, the taste of RWNJ zeal on my plate, stuck with my fork. Yummy.
Thank you, LL.
Since I was fully aware of the American situation in 1963, and literally sat less than 20 ft from Peter, Paul & Mary the day after their performance on an athletic field in Alabama during the Salem to Montgomery March in March, 1965 it seems appropriate to contribute the following to your fine thread:
Rest well (or Good Day) everyone!
#TrustBarack He’s Earned It
Bob, that is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Thanks for the tweet and rest well!
Thank you Jacqueline.
I’ve been struggling with how to condense an essential message and am grateful to Twitter for enforcing the 140 character constraint. As I was preparing for a few moments of rest, the message finally crystallized ….
We have a President who, without ANY doubt, gets it. We likely won’t ever have another unless we spend the next 3.5 years maximizing his ability to lead America to a much more ethical, empathetic and sustainable form of community and governance.
Yes We Can
Bob – I’m just reading this. May I say, as your little cheerleader, that you are the MASTER of “maximizing his ability.” And isn’t it funny about the 140 characters? Who knew that’s all ya needed to come up with little gems like THIS. Bravo Zulu!
Thank you Jacqueline! Hope you are having a fine day 🙂
I am, thank you. Trying not to get as deeply entrenched as I got yesterday! Need time to smell the flowers and all that. Ha!
Okay, TODville, I’m packing it in.
President Obama, we know you are watching (out for) us tonight, with Bo at your side, and we deeply appreciate it!
I’m continuing to hammer away at these idiots claiming that Greenwald is some sort of hero. It’s annoying.
Hello, Hello, Hello, Is anybody out there…… 😉
I am having a sleepless night….
Pink Floyd:
It bothers me when people conflate history for their own inept or twisted ideological fatuous wicked beliefs as they willfully trash, tarnish and decimate The Civil Rights Icons.
In 2010, Beck was doing that with MLK.
In To Sir With Love, one of the characters, perhaps, Peg said: You are, but you ain’t…….
These people who do a disservice to history are in my book, to a certain extent worse than those who were hindering progress then. Yes, it is harsh, but that is the Only way to jolt them to reality.
In what green earth is this Edward Snowden like MLK, Rosa Parks, etc?
What has ES achieved in life? Not a high school graduate. Left the National guard after 4 months. Left the CIA. In the Booz job for less than 3 months and now is running, hiding, a Fugitive…..he is.
I am suggesting to use facts nothing else to impeach these people. They are doing a serious disservice to the Civil Rights era, people and struggles.
To idiots like Chris Hayes, GG, etc
Pink Floyd: We Don’t Need No Education…..on Civil Rights
They don’t Know much about History….

A Change is Gonna Come
righteous musical essay, nena!
Morning, Nena! Couldn’t sleep?
.
.
Yes, Ma’am, change is in THE House even though some are still trying to bar the doors.
Yes, VC…..I have been up since 1:00 AM CT.
Just read a few of your comments while you were by yourself – {{Nena}}. It is ‘hard’ to see people who don’t get it pontificating from their paid podiums, knowing they are (unwittingly or otherwise) muddying the waters. The encouraging piece fro me is that people are pushing back as much as they are able.
Hello Susanne, I see that I am no longer alone 🙂
Happy to be sharing the page with You and VC this early AM 😉
almost bedtime here, but that’s one of the beauties of tod: always somebody up!
{Look) To the right. To the right. To the right. ~~~ 😕 ~~~ (Look) To the left. To the left. To the left.
Aw! I notice Nena’s been on the job real early today. Have to go say ‘hi’!
Hey, Sweet VC……I am Looking up at You…..up there in the North Thundra 😉
😀 I’m actually really not awake yet (I’m telling my body), Nena & Susanne. I’m in one of my wake up periods which occur every 2/3 hours. If I keep really quiet and turn the light off again and try not to think,I am hopeful that I MAY fall asleep for another 1/2 to 1 hour.
James Carville Educating Bill O’Reilly
I was surprised.
Reposting this because today is the 12th.
Nena, after all these hours awake, what happens now? Do you go to work without having slept or can you sleep for a couple of hours despite the sunlight? Sleeping and daylight don’t mesh for me unless I’m having a migraine, then I haz no choice.
I will be all messed up and no doubt a tad jittery. It is one of those things. I will go in and if it gets too much, well, then, I will just say:OK guys, today is a tough patch…..must be heading home.
See you later…..I am going to try and take a few downtime before 6:30 am.
I am wrapping my Arms around and throwing in my CD of Solomon Burke and see If I can get 45 minutes to hour sleep.
So In Good Vibes…..I am sending Solomon Burke to Wrap His Arms Around TODers…….Lovingly.
See You all Later, TODville Villagers 😉
See you later, Nena, and I really hope you get a little sleep. I’ll speak softly so as not to disturb you. In fact I might even follow your example and shut my eyes since it’s not bright here yet. Rest well, even though it’ll be short.
sweet dreams nena and vc!
and goodnight tods everywhere!
Sweet dreams, Susanne! Catch you much later.
LL, you are likely still sleeping, but big THANKS for compiling this thread. Thanks too to the other participants who shared meaningful music, poetry, thoughts etc. There is quite a bit here that I hadn’t seen or heard before. I admit it found it powerful that at the end of the Mahalia Jackson vid there is recording of her basically asking ‘what have you done for others today?’. It was ‘powerful’ to me because it reminded me that PBO/Michelle repeatedly affirm this same message, as do pols (ex. VP Joe) who really care. IOW for those who are sincere it is more than just ‘me, me & mine’. To be reminded that there is more to moving #FORWARD than Chris Hayes and Snowden is … is … is….meaningful. To be reminded that this change thing is not a ‘game’, not a comparison, not an intellectual exercise, it’s about freedom and sacrifice and courage, it’s visceral. Thanks again.
Good morning all, good morning Chips.
Anyone remember our MSM going bat crazy about this story in 2006?
Hey FayPax, I came in to see if you were up but you were apparently still in Nod. 😉 I rendez-vous-ed with Nena and Susanne instead., and that was good too. Now I’m going to sign out and read a chapter or two in the book beside my pillow, as it’s pretty certain I won’t fall back to sleep.
Haven’t signed off yet …. The clip above talking about freedom reminded me of this ‘Freedom never dies’
Glad to see that Capehart is not succumbing to the MSNBC/WaPo crappy hype…but then again, Capehart probably understands the difference between a real civil rights hero and a wannabe ZERO, and is honest enough to acknowledge it.
Ever since **I** fixed it my laptop has been doing the crazy dance so who knows how long it’ll go before it conks out! If I’m missing for a long time it’ll probably be the reason. Since I thought it was something I did on my Firefox browser I deleted that along with lots of bookmarked stuff 😥 but I’m still having difficulties. Right now I can’t even get a full screen when I use Microsoft Word – the top ‘bar’ fades in and out. There are other little annoyances too. Sigh! Maybe I’ll go buy one of those back up thingies, back up what’s here, then TRY to wipe the whole thing. Don’t want to give it out for cleaning because they always take DAYS and I can’t go DAYS without TOD. Of course if the system dies BEFORE I do anything I’ll be forced to wait DAYS! Such a conundrum, but since I haven’t been called to work and don’t feel like going anywhere at the moment, I guess I’ll wait and watch laptop events unfold. 😕
Morning VC!
Have you tried restoring your system to an earlier date? Maybe to a date when you remember your computer was last working…sometimes that works for me when by computer starts acting wonky.
Rise and Shine!!!
http://theobamadiary.com/2013/06/12/rise-and-shine-526/
Whenever we hear that a planned terrorist attack was thwarted, how do they think the CIA/NSA was able to do that? The MSM represents their “journalists” as being knowledgeable…more knowledgeable than we are. If this is how they show it, someone is being overpaid…much like those private contractors.
