This and That (short-ish version)

Text of remarks here

****

It was pretty flippin’ delicious watching the Twitter meltdown after this:

Jeffrey Toobin: Edward Snowden Is No Hero

Edward Snowden, a twenty-nine-year-old former C.I.A. employee and current government contractor, has leaked news of National Security Agency programs that collect vast amounts of information about the telephone calls made by millions of Americans, as well as e-mails and other files of foreign targets and their American connections. For this, some, including my colleague John Cassidy, are hailing him as a hero and a whistle-blower. He is neither. He is, rather, a grandiose narcissist who deserves to be in prison.

…. he describes himself as appalled by the government he served … what, one wonders, did Snowden think the N.S.A. did? ….

…. he wasn’t blowing the whistle on anything illegal; he was exposing something that failed to meet his own standards of propriety. The question, of course, is whether the government can function when all of its employees (and contractors) can take it upon themselves to sabotage the programs they don’t like. That’s what Snowden has done.

Our President’s National Defense University presentation was certainly going to catalyze major gnashing of teeth among the MIC plutocrats whose cash flow is so dependent on an America perpetually at war ….

… and we are definitely witnessing manifestations of such ….

I missed the Lawrence interview, but someone on twitter said GG again tried to link MLK to Snowden. Can anyone tell me what exactly he said, if he actually did try to do it?

    • June 10, 2013 at 10:31 pm

Woah, would love to know too Lamh. Seriously, MLK and Snowden??

        June 10, 2013 at 10:46 pm

If GG said that, as an AA I am totally offended. That weasel is not fit to utter MLK’s name.

        • June 10, 2013 at 10:47 pm

COS, did you see today a Greenwald Groupie on Twitter comparing Snowden to Rosa Parks? I kid you not.

          • 44 COS
            June 10, 2013 at 10:54 pm

No Chips. That makes me even angrier. There is absolutely no comparison. I don’t recall MLK or Rosa Parks having a cushy job and betraying this country like these 2 bozos. I am appalled.

            • June 10, 2013 at 11:00 pm

No words, COS, no words. The only comfort is that pushback was enormous, as I said earlier it’s hard to know whether these people actually believe the comparison or are just making it out of spite – them being Greenwald/Ron Paul supporters. But, hard to know which is worse.

They’re equating him with Paul Revere in my local paper (SF Chronicle) and saying he’s a patriot. Freaking ridiculous.

    • 47 Nena20409
      June 10, 2013 at 10:33 pm

He referenced that MLK was tapped and was even encouraged to commit suicide when they accused him of having an affair with a woman that was not his wife. It made no sense. MLK was not breaking any laws. The Gov’t was the aggressor. MLK didn’t jet off to Timbuktu or any other place outside USA for he was Not breaking government secretes.

These tiny minded fools are always reaching back to the Civil Rights Era to tarnish and/or steal the Heroism of those Legends to conflate and distort with their twisted ideology.

Exactly Nena. Neither Rosa parks nor MLK were entitled brats making (the 1960’s equivalent of) $200K, looking for “hero worship” status. This arrogant attempt on the part of the GG and his friends in the MSM to link Snowden to these civil rights heroes is just offensive on so many levels.

“This arrogant attempt on the part of the GG and his friends in the MSM to link Snowden to these civil rights heroes is just offensive on so many levels.”

Thank you hopfruit! What you said needs to be said over and over again! I am sick of privileged and cowardly individuals, like Glenn Greenwald, who are trying to equate their unwarranted acts of treason with the heroic struggle for justice and equality led by courageous people who were OPENLY willing to pay the price to advance those causes. As you so appropriately wrote, what Greenwald said is “offensive on so many levels.”

Snowflake couldn’t shine MLK’s shoes. When did MLK shrink in the face of danger, go to a foreign country and chastise his government. He stood to faced death in the face in THIS country. The same as Rosa Parks…she did not go to Paris and protest wrongful treatment of blacks.

This character is telling a very fishy story. I’m staying out of it.

    • June 10, 2013 at 11:07 pm

He lied on his resume, or bluffed his way in with the CIA background, or invoked “sympathy: with his injury in service story, or he’s a well protected mole inside the NSA, has a powerful sugar-daddy, is a white affirmative action hire. Or worst of all Booz and Allen Hamilton hired him WITHOUT reading/checking out his resume

He’s someone’s son, nephew, or maybe his girl friends family got him into that job. It was purely nepotism working here and he is so ungrateful while so many men, soldiers would love to have a $200K job living in Hawaii….what a punk.

    • June 10, 2013 at 11:18 pm

I was listening to Randi Rhoads this afternoon and she was right on. There is more there and no one in the lazy media is asking the right questions. How the hell does a high school drop out with some computer classes, drop out of the service get a job with a Government Contractor making $200K, living in Hawaii and he has a beef with the Federal Government? How does someone with less than three months on the job get access to sensitive information that someone can sell to the highest bidder to China, Russia, or Al Qaeda? The media is too busy spreading lies rather than focus on the real story.

The Daily Show—-with John Oliver sitting in—-is acting all shocked that any of this snooping stuff was possible——phone calls, internet searches, etc. ——-I don’t get the pretense of shock here——where have people been? Now showing a clip of Chris Hayes to prove a point—–and now slamming President Obama for the usual stuff. Wonder how they would be if they were president and responsible for the safety of the country. Some previously held ideas may change quick as a bunny.

      June 10, 2013 at 11:37 pm

So the Obama bashing continues, I assume? What really irks me about this whole story is how they are trying to make it new and everyone is going down this slippery slope. I will be waiting for Chips to post her egg on face photo.

    • 94 theo67
      June 10, 2013 at 11:44 pm

They should save their shock for the poor kids and elderly citizens going hungry because of sequester cuts, and he many soldiers currently in harms’ way – and the fact that the media and many in Congress couldn’t care less.

    • June 11, 2013 at 12:15 am

When doctors are obviously needed – how sad that they do this sort of thing. The loss of a lab testing firm/president will have little impact on health care – but the loss of a number of doctors will – or do they just say sorry & than are allowed to continue raking in the millions?
