Business Insider: The Washington Post Has Now Hedged Its Stunning Claim About Google, Facebook, Etc, Giving The Government Direct Access

…. the Washington Post reported a shocking story about how the FBI and National Security Agency had partnered with Google, Facebook, and many other tech companies to spy on the tech companies’ hundreds of millions of users …. Not surprisingly, the Post’s story created an instant explosion of outrage. The ire was directed at both the government and the technology companies.

….. 24 hours later, after more denials and questions, the Post has made at least two important changes to its spying story.

Smartypants: Things you should read about the NSA surveillance program

There’s an awful lot of noise out there right now about this whole NSA story. In order to balance that out a bit, here are a few things I suggest that you take the time to read…..

But I saved the best for last. From a REAL investigative reporter who created the most amazing series ever known to television (so relevantly named The Wire) – the one and only David Simon – comes this…

More here

UT linked the David Simon post yesterday too, but it can never be read enough.

Once more….

Cracked up at this reply from Smartypants – Joan Walsh was giddy with excitement yesterday, busy RTing stuff about “Obama apologists” and sending love and hugs to the Koch Boy …. ie embarrassing herself again.

Oh good grief…..

Tommy Christopher: On Thursday night, Jay Leno took on the roiling NSA data collection story with the wit and sophistication his fans have come to expect. During his monologue, Leno joked that the saddest part of the story is that “it turns out 90% of phone calls Americans make are to order a a pizza,” and followed that bon mot with the observation that “When I was growing up, I was, we were afraid of Big Brother watching us. Now with Obama, we actually have a brother watching us!”

Get it? Because he’s black!

Wait, sorry, I screwed up the transcription. What Leno actually said was “Now with Obama, we actually have a brothahh watching us!”

The KochFeed crew really outdid themselves yesterday…..

And this is the video of a supposedly angry black man supposedly losing his cool:

Looks like KochFeed forgot people could actually watch the video for themselves. Oh well.

Tom Perriello: Longest Serving Congressperson Should Be Heard, Not Just Heralded

I will never forget having the honor of being a few feet away from Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) on the floor of the House as he cast the deciding 218th vote for healthcare reform. This great public servant had been fighting for universal healthcare for the length of two of my lifetimes, and showed no sign of slowing down….

This week, Dingell becomes the longest serving member of Congress in the history of our nation …. One could easily celebrate Dingell by looking backwards at his decades of accomplishments, but what amazes me is how much Dingell has to contribute to America’s direction going forward …. Too often we celebrate the Greatest Generation only with nostalgia instead of listening to what they can teach us about our future….

More here

President Obama’s statement:

“I want to congratulate Congressman John Dingell on becoming the longest-serving member of Congress in our country’s history.

“First elected in 1955 to the seat formerly held by his father, John Dingell Sr., John has always worked tirelessly for people of his beloved Michigan and for working families across America.

“He has helped pass some of the most important laws of the last half-century, from Medicare to the Civil Rights Act to the Clean Air Act to the Affordable Care Act, and he continues to fight for workers’ rights, access to affordable healthcare, and the preservation of our environment for future generations to enjoy.

“Michelle and I send our warmest wishes to John and his family, and I look forward to congratulating him in person at the White House next week.”

The Nation: John Lewis’s Long Fight for Voting Rights – Nearly five decades after Bloody Sunday in Selma, he’s in the fight of his life, as the Supreme Court threatens to overturn his signature achievement.

…. it’s shocking that the Supreme Court appears to be leaning toward overturning the centerpiece of the country’s most important civil rights law. Last year, Lewis found out that his great-great-grandfather had registered and voted after becoming an emancipated slave following the Civil War, during Reconstruction — something that Lewis could not do until 100 years later, after the passage of the VRA. He wept when he heard the news. It underscored how delicate the right to vote has been throughout American history. If the Court upholds Section 5, as it has in four prior opinions, Lewis’s legacy will be cemented. And if the Court eviscerates it, Lewis’s voice will be needed as never before.

National Journal: The Obscure County Election That Could Change the Planet – A little-watched race in Washington state will determine how America uses its coal—and the future of the global climate.

Whatcom County sits at the northwest tip of the continental United States, a pine-fringed strip of 2,100 square miles in Washington state near where Canada meets the Pacific Ocean. Whatcom’s biggest claim to fame until now was as the nation’s top raspberry producer. But this year, a local election — the race for four seats on the Whatcom County Council — is shaping up to have a profound national, even global, impact. The outcome could affect the U.S. coal industry, trade relations with China, and the planet’s changing climate.

Already, the county race is on the radar of the coal industry, which campaigned against President Obama in 2012 on the charge that he’s waged a “war on coal,” and of national advocacy groups such as the League of Conservation Voters, which spent $14 million nationally to influence the 2012 elections.

Well I don’t watch Jay Leno, unless POTUS or FLOTUS is on the show. I don’t think it was funny, because I don’t think we have a “brother” watching us. By the way, Thursday should be interesting, the President speak at the WH in honor of LGBT pride month. You think a heckler will show up.

The Washington Post published an op-ed, “Why I confronted the first lady”, by her this morning. It made her look even more pathetic, and many of the comments let her have it. I have no idea what the WP was thinking.

Maher mentioned this last night —-amusingly I thought—-along the lines of ‘Michelle don’t take no guff’. Media fascinated with this incident, as they are all things Obama, pres and first lady.

      • June 8, 2013 at 10:07 am

I doubt it. She was too taken aback because FLOTUS confronted her. She probably hasn’t recovered from that.

    1. John Dingell and Jon Lewis are right up there on my freaking awesome bar. I remember Jon Dingell fighting hard for healthcare reform aka the wonderful OBAMACARE! and was so happy to see him at the signing. It made me feel that Teddy Kennedy was also present.

    2. I hear the BuzzFeed Benny Johnson guy used to work for Glenn Beck at The Blaze. That would explain his ZOMG….ANGRY BLACK MAN!!! fetish. Pres. Obama was smiling and chuckling in the clip and that’s anger? 🙄

    3. Pete Souza was posting pictures on Twitter at 1AM ET or so. The man is a genius photographer and the hardest working man out there. Appreciate him so much.

    4. I laugh at the WashingtonPost, Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes, and other dumb media outlets/people who fell for Greenwald’s latest scheme. It’s exactly what happens when one jumps on the Greenwald bandwagon. He’s a grifter and will always be a grifter.

    5. Fantastic round-up Chiparoo; glad I was able to help you out yesterday to complete or slack off from work?! 😆 As usual, anytime. 😀

    Good Saturday morning, TODville!!

Did I miss a press statement or availability from PBO and Xi? Or did they not have a Q & A? PBO mentioned in San Jose that the press would have an opportunity to ask more questions at the summit.

  8. 30 jackiegrumbacher

The president has a brutal weekend working schedule involving delicate negotiations with China and exasperating questions from a petulant press and then dives right into a grueling week. I don’t know how he keeps his preternatural calm, let alone his energy.

I wish I could believe that WaPo and other media would learn the lesson of checking facts first before taking professional incendiaries like GG at face value and then finding they were played. And the NYT should look straight in the mirror the next time it talks about credibility.

Leno proved himself once again to be a stereotypical rich old white man. Mercifully I never watched him and never will.

Oh and BuzzfeedBenny can go to hell.

Thanks for a great morning roundup, Chips.

msnbc is too busy featuring ACLU peeps who are going wild on this story. Had Alex Wagner’s show on for a few minutes after PBO spoke yesterday. Noticed she only let smartest of all Joy Reid speak once——making too much sense, telling truths???——and called on the ACLU spokesperson and some Bloomberg bsns. guy, who said his brain was “reeling” after hearing Obama speak???—–multiple times. It looked like an agenda to me.

        • June 8, 2013 at 10:57 am

I usually try to tune in or find video for shows where I know that Joy Reid will be a guest contributor. I’m starting to pay attention to her facial expression and body language. There are times when she seems to just be enduring her time on a program. Those also seem to be times where she is given little opportunity to speak while having to suffer through the craziness of other guests and the host. Then there are times that she seems relaxed and happy to be a contributor on a show; such as earlier this week on LOD’s show. Of course, she was allowed to make her points and treated as more than just the token liberal that’s needed to pass 🙄 the “fair and balanced” test.

      • 43 Lovepolitics2008
        June 8, 2013 at 11:25 am

They see everything true the prism of their dislike for the President. Buzzfeed guy may really believe that President Obama was angry, behind his smile. It’s silly of course. Everybody who follows President Obama knows that he loves his team of young staffers and likes poking fun at them. But most of all, we know that remarks not being ready is not the kind of thing President Obama gets angry about. He’s a very cool customer. He only gets angry at the serious stuff.

Right wingers lie a lot and play cheap politics. However, in many instances what we see is people caught up in their own bubble. They really believe the stupidity they’re putting out there.

I was happy to hear someone—-Maher here—-tell the truth about Reagan. So much fake myth created around him, making him into someone he was not. First of all, he was out of it for half of his presidency. But Maher and others completely misunderstood President Obama when he referenced Reagan—–he wasn’t saying he agreed with the Reagan trajectory—–he was saying a trajectory could be created by a determined movement—-in the opposite direction.

Grenwald and others are saying the “spying” is to gain political information to benefit Democrats.

      • 53 debz
        June 8, 2013 at 9:59 am

This is disturbing It’s bad enough that someone is leaking classified info, but after reading an AP story trying to tie this into “scandalmania” (they said this will erode trust in the President) and seeing Greenwald say spying is meant to gain political info, the idea that someone is leaking this classified info to take down the President is beyond disturbing. That bothers me more than if the government was listening into my phone call or reading emails. I hope they find out who is behind this soon.

        • 54 dotster3
          June 8, 2013 at 10:30 am

I see this is the planned talking point——-I keep seeing reports of various Repubs across the country saying “this erodes trust in government.” I just read another one—–Porter Goss, Repub former head of CIA, gave a speech in Fl. yesterday where he used those exact same words. This is all creepy to me——it looks like Koch forces at work, all coordinated in attack.

          June 8, 2013 at 11:05 am

Did Greenwald really say that there is “spying meant to gain political info” ???? If so, he’s not only blinded by ideology. He’s absolutely nuts. I’m not sure he’s a right wing mole. He was pretty damning of the Bush administration in the end. I vote for “nuts”, or having psychological issues. Or he has begun to read the conspiracy crap of the Paulites, and he’s lost it. He’s always been a libertarian at heart, hasn’t he?

I don’t get the same “vibe” from Greenwald that I get from Ariana Huffington. Someone would prove Huffington has been a right wing mole all along I wouldn’t be surprised. She’s friends with Issa and Gingrich. Or at least, she’s a cynical opportunist who wants to gravitate around power, and tries to cover all her bases. During the Obamamania of 2008 she wanted to be seen as a supporter. When things got more difficult she abandoned any pretense. These days she’s trying to get in the good graces of Chris Christie. He was her guest at the White House Correspondent Dinner.

Nelson Mandela is back in the Hospital. He is now breaking on his own. Than goodness. I pray for his speedy recovery. However. we must all be prepared.
Unfortunately, speaking from experience, Madiba, will not get better. I wish he would. People who care for him should pray for him, and wish him well for his next journey. This great man was put on earth for a reason. Thank You Lord for the years you gave him to Us. He has been an example of humility. He suffered and has endured. I appreciate him. I am also asking that he is allowed to be with Us a lot long. But please let him not suffer.

Please, please, Nelson Mandela. Truly the Papa of the World we see today. I Love the man.

Morning everyone! Congrats to Layla and alice this morning:) Thought I would share this Republican bit of selective memory

    1. The Republican Party exploited a fraud video made by scam artist James O’Keefe as a pretext for de-funding the left-leaning group ACORN — abusing government power for political payback.

    2. James O’Keefe’s organization was granted 501(c)4 status by the IRS in 2010.

    3. The Republicans, insisting the Obama IRS abused government power for political payback, are outraged by news that conservative groups applying for 501(c)4 status were scrutinized by the IRS (even though twice as many right-wing groups were approved over left-wing groups).

The twisted meta-world of Republican politics.

This has been True Facts of History.

Nelson Mandela admitted to hospital in ‘serious condition’

Former President Nelson Mandela has been admitted to hospital in South Africa with a lung infection.

A presidential spokesman said he is in a “serious but stable condition”, although he was able to breathe on his own – a “positive sign”.

G’day kids! I didn’t see it here this week, but maybe I missed it. If there is video of the POTUS welcoming the Ravens to the WH last Wed. it is worth watching. The POTUS is his fun loving, always good spirited, funny and very entertaining self. It’s a great distraction from the bs that has been the focus of the all too stupid media. Hmmmmm…. http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2013/06/08/18828082-theres-a-map-for-that-marinetrafficcom-again?lite

The Koch Brothers own a giant pile of high-sulfur, high-carbon petroleum waste called petroleum coke, sitting on the bank of the Detroit River. By “giant pile” I mean three stories high and a block long. There is a refinery across the river that processes tar sands from Canada. The coke is a waste byproduct of that refining process.

Naturally, the locals are not too keen on it.

But one man’s waste is another man’s low-cost, high pollution power plant fuel, so that’s where the Koch Brothers have a business angle. That raises the next question of concern to environmentalists (and people with lungs and… earthlings): if the Koch brothers are selling piles of their black mountain to be burned, who’s doing the burning?

Enter our hero, MarineTraffic.com. The International Maritime Organization requires all ships over a certain size to carry something called an AIS transponder. The AIS transponder transmits basic data like position, speed, course, and the ship’s name. MarineTraffic.com maps that data.

So when observers see a ship called the Atlantic Huron being loaded up with the Koch’s coke, they enter the name and track it. One of the options in the vessel’s search result is “Show Vessel’s Track” and clicking that gives you a green line that shows roughly a day’s worth of travel. When I looked yesterday, the green like started at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River and when down to Quebec City. Right now it looks like it’s docked in Montreal.

    More there….

Hi all – just catching up on all the news of the week – it does seem that these leaks are very co-ordinated and relentless. And the media got extra snippy with PBO after he called them out at the WHC dinner. They’re piling on with such glee. GG sounds like a bitter ex – it’s all very weird. Notice nobody is focussing on jobs, immigration, repub obstruction and intransigence. Aside from hurting PBO it seems calculated to enthuse rethugs and depress Dems. It also seems calculated to fill up the slow summer news slot. Curiouser and curiouser …

The new show for Karen Finney is called Disrupt? If only the show would live up to it’s name? Time will Tell? Hmm?

Krystal Ball had a baby boy on 6-7-13, named Lowell, weighed 8 lb and 4 ounces. She never looked that big.

In what world would this heckler not be taken aback if she heckled someone? “Taken aback” speaks to privilege as in “how dare she.” If not for President Obama our gay brothers and sisters in the military would still be getting kicked out of the armed forces. You want to know why this whole episode is bullshit? Because Bill Clinton, who didn’t do shit for the gay community didn’t get heckled when GLAAD presented him with its highest award.

Privilege is also the fact that the WaPo gave a heckler an opportunity to write an article. It’s insane. They published an article called something like why I interrupted the first lady. UNBELIEVABLE!

You know Don, come to think of it you are right. Why would they even give Bill Clinton any kind of award. And then for them to think that it is okay to go disrespect FLOTUS, as that woman did. Someone who is on their side. Still today I don’t like it one bit. And some tries to say that FLOTUS shouldn’t have acted that way. I found no fault in how FLOTUS handle the protester. FLOTUS is not the President, she is married to the President.

I think she will give it good coverage. She went to Wake Forest and Duke and knows how the Republicans and Art Pope are trying to take the state backwards. As the VP would say, “This is a big f…ing deal.”

“It’s 16 Grand Slam titles for Serena Williams now, and she can comfortably get to 20. The sky’s the limit, especially considering the domination she has over her nearest rivals.

“Bear in mind that this is the world number two she has just played, and she has beaten her 13 times in a row. Where can she get to – 25 titles?”
