Go Local! Must-Win 2013 Nationwide Elections

The off-year election calendar is already hurtling full steam ahead and we better get in the trenches.Julian Castro (D) already won re-election in San Antonio last month. Great, but we have got a lot of work to do NOW. Ed Markey  needs a helping hand for June 25 senate elections in MA, as does Steve Ortega in the El Paso mayoral election on June 16, 2013.

Bedwetters are gonna wet beds, GG-Grifters gonna grift, Code Pink & the Sturtzes are gonna heckle, but their tantrums don’t translate into political power. In fact, that’s their business model to parasite off Democrats in power. They thrive in the political sewer. For us 99%ers, Voting, Organizing and Long Term strategizing are the ONLY means to power. It is in our economic interest to STOP Republicans at every level from getting power and doing very bad things to us little people. Raining hellfire on the nuisance Greenwalds and Sturtzes or whatever is the GOP/corporate media fauxrage of the week, is cathartic fly-swatting every once in a while, but it doesn’t mean a hill of beans if we liberals do NOT hold power.

President Obama was handily reelected and we have an Agenda to enact for the American people at the national level. But state and Local elections are even more important in off-years. That’s where the most damage is done. Democrats fail to take these bread and butter races seriously, then watch American Taliban elected unopposed to statewide offices.

Koch brothers & ALEC are vampires destroying democratic (with a small ‘d’) governance in devastating ways at the local level. They’ve bought state legislatures at bargain basement prices who are dismantling our commonweal brick by brick as we speak. Democrats should NEVER cede any territory uncontested to Republicans. Not on schoolboards (that’s how we got the odious Texas curriculum change nightmare & Arizona ban of Hispanic Studies), or District Judges, or City Council, or Land/Agric Commissioner, or poisonous Ballot initiatives.

The last category lies at the core of GOP base mobilization tactics. Bush used anti-gay ballot initiatives to drive religious fundamentalists to the polls and won reelection in 2004. We have to be similarly savvy to rally against odious Initiatives and also craft some ourselves to advance our interests and mobilize our base.

So let’s get to it. Bookmark this post. Find a campaign or two to volunteer on THIS year. Heck, consider running for some local races yourself. Why Not? Have you heard the caliber of wingnuts who flood City Hall or school board? If we don’t challenge them, they make decisions that destroy our kids’ education, ruin our tax revenue projections, and sell off our towns and cities to the corporate cabal, democracy be damned (See Michigan and weep!)

Critical Ongoing Need

1) Voter Registration Very Important – Without new voters, our demographic advantage means squat

2)  Battleground Texas Project :

This is the big kahuna. Democrats weaponize our demographic potential in Texas, and Republicans will never win national elections again. Ever! We know it, they know it. GOP is pulling out their stops to stop us. Led by Obama for America guru Jeremy Byrd, we’ve already put brains, boots & $$$ on the ground. Get involved NOW here , and also Facebook, Twitter @BGTX . Bonus: They are even hiring folks if you need a job

Steve M. is asking the right questions about the timing of this week’s NSA “revelations”. Who benefits from this, and why now? The benefit part is easy: Republicans who are going after the President, not the policy they passed and renewed.

Result: Obama’s approval ratings go down; Democrats (and only Democrats) are associated in the public mind with highly intrusive “big government”; Republicans make significant gains in the 2014 midterms; this scandal and others hurt the Democrats’ 2016 presidential candidate the way Monicagate hurt Al Gore in 2000 … and yet the surveillance state remains in place, and is possibly even expanded in secret by President Christie or Rubio or Jeb (all of whom would be likely to stock their administrations with veterans of the Bush White House).

The right is working hard to make us forget that these policies were the work of two presidents from two different parties, endorsed in a bipartisan way in Congresses that have had several shifts in party control, and mostly OK’d by the courts. For the right, the real and faux scandals of the past few months are table-setters for this week’s revelations.

    Wow….Great Job, Zizi 😉

There’s a lawsuit now filed in NJ against Chris Christie on this Oct senatorial election……I hope it gets traction and this election gets folded into the Nov 2013 election already scheduled.

One tip….you see where your links are underlined in Red?

If you go to edit post….look for the two yellow infinity looking signs above the top left of the picture, highlight “Julian Castro” in blue

Click on the one on the left…You will get this option, uncheck the box…paste your link check the box and hit update

        [image deleted

after that if you look at the middle picture I posted to the right of the edit page you will see “Preview option” under Publish, hit that, it will open a separate tab….then you can check all your links and it should open separate tabs, and allow people to click on them and not have to leave the TOD(save/update your draft if you are satisfied…hope that helps!

I’m so sorry Zizi…..I am going to crawl back under the rock I was previously residing in…..give this a shot…Go to Dashboard, top left column you will see “Comments” if you click on that and select the comment I posted, you should be able to “move to trash” in the Bulk Actions box….hit apply. GREAT post, zizi! this is what it is all about. instead the constant worry and complaining about “chuck todd said this or that,” or “can you believe what jake tapper said today?!?,” with hundreds of comments following up on things like that, THIS is what our focus should be on, every day, and of course then the action AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER to succeed with each election.

    • 28 hopefruit2
      June 8, 2013 at 2:21 pm

4more, the two things are not mutually exclusive. We need to be aware of what’s being pushed in the media if we are to correct them. That’s how social media overcame traditional media in 2012 – faulty narratives were quickly debunked and not allowed to take traction. John Kerry, Al Gore, Howard Dean were all swiftboated partly because faulty narratives spread in the media were not nipped in the bud when they should have been.

Part of the “action” is dissemination of correct information about our candidates while correcting and debunking misinformation or false information, in addition to the very important activities of voter registration, phonebanking, canvassing, and most importantly VOTING in those elections.

Thanks zizi for an excellent action post!!

      • 29 4morefor44
        June 8, 2013 at 2:45 pm

i think the balance is way, way off though. correcting “faulty narratives” has some value, but i’d wager that over 90% of the time in liberal blogs, including here is now spent on responding to and getting upset about whatever anti-obama lies “the news” decides to focus on each day.

“what is working” and others will post some action-related thing here and there might be a couple supportive comments, yet her site sees little activity comparatively speaking and if glenn greenwald does his usual stupid stuff, my god, comments sections and twitter absolutely go berserk. sure some pushback is fine, but if it’s not balanced with equal or more time and energy on community action, then it is largely wasted energy. there’s a reason president obama changed the name of OFA to “organizing for ACTION.” all i’m ever suggesting is people consciously deciding to expend their energy more wisely on that action, instead of responding to lies in “the news” in excessive amounts.

        • 30 hopefruit2
          June 8, 2013 at 3:16 pm

I agree with you completely that these two activities need to be balanced. But I will also say that the nature of the two activities are very different and so by definition you would expect see more “activity” online pushing back against the media memes than you would for organizing, phonebanking or canvassing because the latter is not by definition an internet activity – even though the Internet is one of the many tools used by organizers/Phonebankers/Canvassers. Pushing back against MSM memes is often done mostly via the internet because that is the quickest and most effective way to do it.

It may not be apparent just by browsing websites but there is considerable OFA activity to compliment the online dissemination of info. I posted a series of pictures last weekend (which was the weekend of the OFA nation-wide summits), demonstrating just that.

            June 8, 2013 at 3:25 pm

fair points. i just like to keep people aware of this balance, since it’s so much easier to sit at a computer for hours each day and get lost in that online jousting, than it is to get out there and do the hard work that actually wins elections locally, so i try to make sure people think more about how they’re spending their precious time each day and make sure it’s valuable.

” it’s so much easier to sit at a computer for hours each day and get lost in that online jousting, than it is to get out there and do the hard work that actually wins elections locally”

I won’t argue with you on that. 🙂

            • June 8, 2013 at 3:46 pm

what i will say is that there is a role for all of us to play…in my young community organizing days there were physical things that i could do that i cannot do now…so as for those activities i pick and choose what to do…however…information is KING and i see my role as also providing folks with that info…just as TOD helps me to sift thru the noise i in turn help others to do the same…in addition to doing community things with my neighbors and friends and family….it is like the ripple in a pond…

    ON Point ZIZI…

For the folks here in PA….

I wrote earlier in the week that in Philadelphia there remains that Old Party Boss system of politics…in my neighborhood PBO had to bring in outside forces to man some of the offices and door to door networking… in the recent primary held a few weeks ago…turnout was dismal…if we have learned anything is that turnout is key for the DEMs to win….

and the onerous VOTER ID will be argued in court on JULY 15..

    I so agree with Zizi…politics are local…

but I also know that we must organize…and register folks to vote…get them out to the polls and keep them engaged!!!…as PBO has said…we must be about the work of citizenship…

Thank you Prettyfoot for remembering and for sharing this beautiful video. In just one term alone, President Obama accomplished so much more than many other Presidents had done in two terms. The media know it and the Republicans know it. And all they are trying to do now, with all these manufactured scandals, is to throw sand in the eyes of Americans to stop them from seeing the accomplishments of this great man.

Zizi2, thanks for this timely reminder. The Koch/Republicans are banking on us getting discouraged and feeling afraid and demoralized. That’s why the best way to fight the attacks is to work harder than ever on the local level. We have some good Latino candidates running for school board and city council and our very big challenge is to motivate turnout, especially among Latinos. Democrats in our area are expected to act like abused victims and Republican candidates expect to romp to victory each November. The turnout for both presidential elections was a surprise that local Republicans did not like–they actually lost the city both times, although they always win the county. They are desperate to put Democrats back in the bottle and we’re working hard to deliver a surprise.

excellent post zizi, and a big mahalo for all the info! good morning todville!

saw this article about the shootings in santa monica and was gobsmacked by this sentence from an eyewitness:

‘ “He’s just standing there, like he’s modeling for some ammo magazine,” Orcutt said, “seeing who he could shoot, one bullet at a time, like target practice.” ‘

    http://www.salon.com/2013/06/08/five_dead_in_santa_monica_shooting/

doesn’t that just say it all? modeling for an ammo magazine, target practice–this is the culture all around our young men. it’s not benign, and it’s not sustainable. but it is making some weapons manufacturers very wealthy, at a time when our military is slowing down on weapons purchases.

Thanks, zizi2, for all the research and work you’re doing for Dems everywhere!

For some inexplicable reason, the MSM have a love affair with Chris Christie. They act like he’s running unopposed.

All in the interest of “fairness” and offering “both sides.” Yeah right.

This was Barbara Buono’s introduction on @Lawrence back in March.

She has such a compelling story that the MSM could run with, but for whatever reason (mafia? joke), they choose not to.

Thank you so much Zizi for this important call to action. Even as we aggressively respond to all these manufactured scandals by the GOP and the media, we must diligently stay focused on making sure that we defeat Republicans on all levels of government. Thank you also for emphasizing the importance of local, state and Congressional elections. People often forget the crucial role played by local, state, and congressional elections when it comes to government. You really did thorough research!

OMG, Joy is amazing. She is interviewing Michael Steele and totally calling him on his BS about Chris Christie and exactly why he is spending so much money on a special election. He is afraid of Corey Booker. Period,. Full Stop. This is just awesome to watch.

At the end of the segment, Joy told Michael Steele he was a great advocate for a party who wasn’t an advocate for him. Hilarious….

Christie’s having that special election to dampen the Dem vote…that is his form of voter suppression….it is hard to get folks out to vote….try getting them out twice…it will be a herculean task….but not impossible….

I’m hoping that this will wake up the people in my state to see what a liar Christi is. He’s always been for the 1%. I hope what Christie did backfires, and causes him to lose the election. If all the dems come out, we could win this. I’ve been giving a small amount monthly to Barbara Buono’s campaign.

Joy Reid is killing it. She walked through a timeline that revealed the NSA type surveillance has been going on since 1978!!! Now Greenwald feigns outrage about it because he wants people to funnel money to his blog and stupid media types including Chris Hayes and Rachel Maddow fall for it. Not Joy though. Nope. She shut that BS down.

Then Michael Steele came on trying to pretend Chris Christie is a wonderful forward thinking republican and Joy shut that nonsense down. Michael thought this was Morning Joe where he could spin BS and not get push back. Joy gave him examples of the cowardly person Christie is.

    So far so good.
