Attorney General Eric Holder: Champion Of The People

There are fools on the left, center, and right who have no clue what Attorney General Eric Holder does everyday. There are fools on the left, center, and right whose lives will never be affected by racism, sexism, injustice, poverty, discrimination and therefore do not understand or willfully choose not to understand why we need an Eric Holder. There are fools on the left, center, and right who call for this fighter of the downtrodden to be fired. Why are they fools? This is why.

Obama and Holder 522

Impartial Review: Eric Holder’s Justice Department has successfully brought a large number of discrimination cases against banks. In most of these cases, the banks were alleged to have charged Hispanics and African-Americans with the same financial credentials thousands more for the same loan. In addition, minorities were targeted for risky sub-prime loans.

Morgan Stanely settled a race discrimination charge against Hispanics last week. The settlement established a $16 million fund, of which $14 million will be divided among class members who submitted claims. Under the settlement, Morgan Stanley will spend approximately $7.5 million on diversity programs, including programs aimed at training and recruiting African-American and Hispanic financial advisors and trainees over the next five years.

Bank of America has been the hardest hit by Department of Justice lawsuits due to their purchase of Countrywide. Bank of America agreed to pay $335 million (see video above) to resolve allegations that it engaged in a widespread pattern of discrimination against qualified African-American and Hispanic borrowers. In addition, two race bias lawsuits were filed against the company in July.

Krebscycle: In Meridian Mississippi, where 4 of every 10 kids lives below the poverty line the public schools have been routinely jailing black children for offenses like: wrong color socks. In Meridian, when schools want to discipline children, they do much more than just send them to the principal’s office. They call the police, who show up to arrest children who are as young as 10 years old. Arrests, the Department of Justice says, happen automatically, regardless of whether the police officer knows exactly what kind of offense the child has committed or whether that offense is even worthy of an arrest. The police department’s policy is to arrest all children referred to the agency.

The Department of Justice sued the school district, the police, and the local courts. The schools caved first and in March signed a consent order. But the heavy handed Feds are not going to stop at little Meridian. They are going to prevent school districts from jailing 10 year olds all over the place as Colorines reports.

Justin Elliot: In a marked shift from the Bush administration, President Obama’s Justice Department is aggressively investigating several big urban police departments for systematic civil rights abuses such as harassment of racial minorities, false arrests, and excessive use of force.

In just the past few months, the Civil Rights Division has announced “pattern and practice” investigations in Newark, New Jersey and Seattle. It’s also conducting a preliminary investigation of the Denver Police Department, and all this is on top of a high-profile push to reform the notorious New Orleans Police Department — as well as criminal prosecutions of several New Orleans officers…

“The primary victims of police misconduct are African-Americans and Latinos. The Bush administration simply wasn’t interested in this,” Walker says. “The Obama-Holder DOJ puts a very high priority on this.”

Department Of Justice: Wal-Mart Stores Inc. pleaded guilty today in cases filed by federal prosecutors in Los Angeles and San Francisco to six counts of violating the Clean Water Act by illegally handling and disposing of hazardous materials at its retail stores across the United States. The Bentonville, Ark. based company also pleaded guilty today in Kansas City, Mo., to violating the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) by failing to properly handle pesticides that had been returned by customers at its stores across the country.

As a result of the three criminal cases brought by the Justice Department, as well as a related civil case filed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Wal-Mart will pay approximately $81.6 million for its unlawful conduct. Coupled with previous actions brought by the states of California and Missouri for the same conduct, Wal-Mart will pay a combined total of more than $110 million to resolve cases alleging violations of federal and state environmental laws.

Department Of Justice: The Justice Department today announced an agreement with the City of West Columbia, S.C., to improve access to all aspects of civic life for persons with disabilities.  The agreement was reached under Project Civic Access (PCA), the department’s wide-ranging initiative to ensure that cities, towns and counties throughout the country comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

“The ADA is a passport to our nation’s cities for people with disabilities. This agreement ensures that all people have access to West Columbia’s parks and other programs, services and activities,” said Eve L. Hill, Senior Counselor to the Assistant Attorney General of the Civil Rights Division. “Access to our cities is a basic civil right and the ADA is shaping the way our country and its people think inclusively about themselves and people with disabilities.”

SmartyPants: When people list the accomplishments of the Obama administration and the Democratic Congress of the last two years, you almost never hear about the passage of the Fair Sentencing Act. It reduced the 100:1 disparity in mandatory minimums for people convicted of offenses related to crack vs powder cocaine. One has to wonder whether the lack of attention to this bill is because the disparities primarily affected young black men.

Carrie Johnson: The Obama Justice Department has been taking a more aggressive approach against people who block access to abortion clinics, using a 1994 law to bring cases in greater numbers than its predecessor. The numbers are most stark when it comes to civil lawsuits, which seek to create buffer zones around clinic entrances for people who have blocked access in the past. Under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, or FACE Act, the Justice Department’s civil rights division has filed eight civil cases since the start of the Obama administration. That’s a big increase over the George W. Bush years, when one case was filed in eight years.

“There’s been a substantial difference between this administration and the one immediately prior,” says Ellen Gertzog, director of security for Planned Parenthood. “From where we sit, there’s currently much greater willingness to carefully assess incidents when they occur and to proceed with legal action when appropriate.”

Krebscycle: The Justice Department announced today that it will monitor municipal elections on May 11, 2013, in the cities of Corrigan, Farmers Branch, Irving and Orange, Texas, to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965.   The Voting Rights Act prohibits discrimination in the election process on the basis of race, color or membership in a minority language group.

Department Of Justice: Today, the Justice Department issued a findings letter detailing the results of its investigation into the use of solitary confinement on prisoners with serious mental illness at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution at Cresson in Cambria County, Pa.  The department found that Cresson’s use of long-term and extreme forms of solitary confinement on prisoners with serious mental illness, many of whom also have intellectual disabilities, violates their rights under the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Good morning Chips, UT and everyone. Thanks soooooooo much for posting this thread UT. I am appalled at the way AG Holder is being maligned; especially on the so called left, with Bill Press leading the charge. I turned to his show this morning to see if he was still calling for Holder to be fired and lo and behold, he is still doing the same.

Thank you UT – THIS is the kind of advocacy we should be reinforcing. FayPax, this thread is a great example of what I meant in my comments to you on the previous thread. We should help to disseminate info like this far and wide letting people (including the MSM) know that we KNOW who Eric Holder is and we know WHY the GOP/MSM are after him. And we HAVE his back.

  7. June 3, 2013 at 11:58 am

Great post UT. All those people screaming about this administration not going after the banks are full of it. I know they have also gone after some indidviduals. But most important of all, almost everything the big banks did that resulted in the Great Recession were actually legal thanks to the GOP with an assist from Bill Clinton.

I think part of the reason many on the left are joining in the attacks on Holder now is that they are upset that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, et. al. were not prosecuted for war crimes. This is their way of getting even. It won’t work, though.

    • 14 proudofobama
      June 3, 2013 at 12:03 pm

These people refuse to listen when POTUS and AG Holder explain that what the banks did then was not illegal. No “crimes” were committed. They have gone after the banks where they could within the law. But this is why we needed Dodd-Frank to make what the banks were doing illegal. These people who keep yelling about jailing the bankers just want sometime to be mad about. They are not interested in the truth.

I remember reading a story sometime last year. Clinton would go to his impeachment trial in the morning, Newt Gingrich would be screaming OUTRAGE and removal from office for acts he himself was guilty of, and then in the afternoon they’d get together to work on Phil Gramm’s gutting of our financial safety net that had been in place since the 1930’s. Bill Clinton was fine with deregulation and did nothing to fight for the inclusion of credit default swap regulation. Bill Clinton is only progressive when he and his wife are campaigning and both are dangerously comfortable with RW financial beliefs when they are governing.

Almost all of the global economic collapse was caused by Bill Clinton palling around with Phil Gramm and Newt Gingrich during the impeachment charade. Despicable.

The concept of a free press and its direct relationship to a free people has been a foundational underpinning of American democracy since the nation’s founding, and for 227 years that simple premise held true. Founding Father Thomas Jefferson famously said “The only security of all is in a free press. It is necessary, to keep the waters pure,” and that “our liberty cannot be guarded but by the freedom of the press, nor that be limited without danger of losing it.” The Constitution’s framers agreed with Jefferson and included the edict that “Congress shall make no law respecting abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press” in the 1st Amendment that Republicans violated in 2003 when in their drive to destroy democracy and sell it to corporate America, they deregulated the Federal Communications Commission in what former FCC chairman described as a “right-wing power grab” that gave complete control of all media to a few un-American corporations. Adlai Stevenson once said that “The free press is the mother of all our liberties and of our progress under liberty,” but with one act of a Republican Congress the mother of Americans’ liberty was unceremoniously murdered and what remains is the rotting corpse of a free press and free people.

Teabaggers weren’t screaming about “Liberty” then, were they?

These people should NEVER occupy the halls of govt!

The new bill, it seems, will not involve moving funds from Obamacare implementation into the federally-run high-risk pool designed as a temporary stopgap for people denied individual insurance for having pre-existing conditions—a practice that the Affordable Care Act will flatly ban at the end of this year. Instead, as TPM’s Sahil Kapur reports:

The altered version wipes out Obamacare’s prevention fund entirely and uses the money to fund state-based high-risk pools which have nothing to do with the Affordable Care Act.
“To address the concerns raised several weeks ago, an amended version of the bill has been drafted,” Cantor wrote Friday afternoon in a memo to House Republicans, which was provided to TPM. “The amendment does not utilize or fund the existing [Obamacare high-risk pool] program, which will expire at the end of the year. Instead, the amendment provides funding for state based high risk pools, the framework that represents the conservative policy answer to helping Americans with preexisting conditions.”

So if you have a preexisting condition and live in one of the 35 states running a high-risk pool offering access to individual insurance policies with astronomical premiums for really, really bad insurance, here’s the great news from House Republicans: “conservative policy” holds that propping up these pools is a better option for you than being guaranteed access to affordable and adequate
health insurance! We haven’t seen the exact language of Cantor’s new bill, but it may aim at spreading the blessings of expensive, crappy insurance to all 50 states!

for those who still suggest “the news” about “ratings” and not pure propaganda…just using MSNBC as an example, why do the people who have strong rises in ratings for the network almost always get fired within a year or so, yet the people with piddly or losing ratings are kept, in some cases for decades now as in chris matthews? phil donahue…keith olberman…ed schultz and so on all resulted in a rise in overall ratings for the network, yet they quickly get canned or demoted, yet nothing ever happens to matthews or joe scar?

HEADLINE: VA mental health summits aim to improve care

// The Veterans Affairs Department will host mental health summits at all 151 VA medical centers from July to mid-September in an effort to improve coordination between VA and community behavioral health providers, President Obama announced today. The meetings will bring together mental health specialists, government officials and veterans service organizations to facilitate cooperation, with a goal to improve mental health outreach and treatment for veterans. The summits will build on lessons learned from a VA pilot program available in nine states where veterans have access to community mental health providers.

“We lose 22 veterans a day to suicide, and we have to do a better job than that of preventing these all-too-often silent tragedies,” Obama said during opening remarks at the National Conference on Mental Health at the White House.

In the past year, VA has redoubled efforts to improve patient access to mental health care. It has hired nearly 1,600 additional mental health professionals and filled 2,036 vacancies. It also has doubled the capacity of its Veterans Crisis Line and introduced programs such as education initiatives and mobile apps to assist veterans seeking behavioral health treatment. //

Of course, I have my laptop, but can’t promise I’ll be able to finish, so if someone wants to take up the task, I will be pleased as I feel it should be done asap…the vultures are circling.

    Would add:

Success with health care fraud investigations and enforcement efforts have recovered and returned $14.9 billion to the Medicare Trust Fund through 2012. (strengthening Medicare)

Committed to cracking down on unlawful conduct by pharmaceutical companies. Won largest settlement in history for mislabeling and overcharging by pharmaceutical companies. (looking out for the sick, and Seniors)

Won a $1.4 billion settlement for mismanagement of Native American lands and trusts. (seeks justice for all)

THank you Kasai…who cares about AP bullshyte moaning and groaning about Holder when you are now able to refinance your mortgage without having to foreclose? Who cares about Bengasi when when your college graduates under 27 can now remain on your insurance until they find work? Who cares about IRS when their retirement portfolio has more than doubled/tripled in $$$ since 2009?

Corporatist shills? I’m surprised she didn’t use the word plutocrat. And since when have self described libertarians cared about helping poor people? Her telling you to read the Black Agenda Report was laughable. If she wants to support Greenwald that’s fine. Nothing wrong with that. But she should not be shocked when people refute her arguments with things like facts and reality.

Wow – the racism shines – seems to be a “corporate shrill” you have to have “white skin”. Lots of places in the world @monahol has never visited! Quite a few in the US – also, too

Reporters in 1944, even in 2008 knew better.

Today, it is not about doing what are best for American. 98% of Journos today, do Not see pres Obama as a president whose need and desire for wanting the Nation’s national security secrecy be classified. They see him as someone they must undermine at every cost. Fox declared itself The Opposition to this POTUS in 2009 and 2010. One Fox VP’s name was Clemente….the fluffy guy sitting close to the POTUS at this year’s WHCD event. The double, triple and quadruple standard used for and against this POTUS is unbelievable.

Thank you so much, UT, for this wonderful post highlighting the accomplishments of AG Eric Holder’s DOJ. It’s a shame that the so called champions of Civil Rights are no where to be found speaking up in defense of AG Holder.

WASHINGTON — Rebuffing President Barack Obama’s latest plea, House Republicans on Monday proposed keeping open the military-run prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, by barring the administration from transferring its terror suspects to the United States or a foreign country such as Yemen.

The provisions dealing with the fate of the remaining 166 prisoners are part of a defense policy bill drafted by Armed Services Committee Chairman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon, R-Calif. The chairman released the bill Monday, two days before Republicans and Democrats on the committee will vote on it.

They specifically name Yemen because 46 Yemeni’s have been cleared for transfer to their country.

So now “librul” Daily Beast decides to go after Rev Al (bring up his past)? Funny how Daily Beast doesn’t care about Joe Scarborough’s unexplained Dead intern found in his office…among other things….
