Another great thread, UT, thank you.

Alycee presented all of us with a very important reminder of 1 June 1921 in the previous thread – yet another example of why TOD is the place for substantial learning as well as fun and passionate support of our President and the American Promise.

Hopefully, he and members of his staff will read it.

Carolyn, indeed. I love Sinatra. Another great musician who left us with great music. He was a very good writer and director of some of the orchestras that played with him. Great to have seen him conduct.

I was just sitting off of my front bedroom yesterday while trying to relax and allow the pain to leave me alone, so I clicked on my phone and listened to Sinatra Duet album. Great time in my creative space. Enjoyed every song and artist on the album.

I do believe POB could have been on that album as well. Lovely.HZ

UT – you have had some amazing posts today – and generated some great discussions (leaving football aside πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ ) The tweets were a delight – I just love God on twitter – a dose of reality.

I’m always amazed at the links folks find that are just so interesting to read – and so different to the continual whinge whinge from the MSM

“In recent years, the Bush administration has recast the federal government’s role in civil rights by aggressively pursuing religion-oriented cases while significantly diminishing its involvement in the traditional area of race.”

Awwwww, poor nutty hothead goofball tea party darlin’ Joe Walsh. He thought he was going to be the next Illinois GOP Chairman, and even his fellow Repubs rejected him and chose some lobbyist instead, unsurprisingly. He was too crazy for the voters, even too crazy for the Repub Party—–and that’s crazy. There are lots of things so called historians have not documented about blacks in this country. Hell, we were here before the Pilgrams came.

      • June 2, 2013 at 9:40 am

I’m just finishing up a book called 1493 about the human/animal/plant exchanges that went on after Columbus. It talks about this and also how we are taught that Native Americans and African slaves were powerless against the European but that is not so. Many of the first African slaves were actually warriors captured in battle and so led very strong resistance actions. The author also posits that the spread of malaria may have had something to do with turning people away from using indentured servant and toward owning slaves. (Indentured servants were far less trouble and cheaper than slaves at first). Lots of fascinating information on so many diverse subjects.

Now if only the truth was taught in the schools, eh?

          • June 2, 2013 at 2:23 pm

Yes, we really need to broaden the scope and inclusiveness of our history programs. I attended a series of Social Justice workshops through my intermediate school district during which we read an article about a high school class where the teacher taught about the Civil Rights movement including much information and original sources, far beyond the little chapter in the textbook and including ALL points of view.. He found that black students were affirmed and many of the white students were appalled and ashamed, neither group knowing to much about the era before. It broke down a lot of barriers and created a lot of new understandings. The truth shall set you free.

I know a number people are already doing so but I believe that we need to be relentless, loud and persistent in defending AG Holder from the press, the extremist on the right and left who are attacking him for doing his job as AG.

The White House, Team Obama, DOJ, the Democratic delegation need to hear the voices of AG’s supporters because the detractors are now the loudest.

the media hosts that offer support (like Bashir & Rev Al) need to hear us say thank you for the support.

I know that the β€œblog tyrants” are busy but it would a good thing to do one of those extensive blog entries with a focus on AG, what he has achieved at DOJ, and a number of news articles that are supporting him & the DOJ. Such a blog focus could then be available for people to cross-post & tweet to those shouting that AG be fired

some people who are echoing the nonsense of extremes don’t have a clue as to WHY the gop is intent on undermining the DOJ & the work its doing in areas of civil rights.

I also wonder WHY there has been little attention paid to the fact that AG thought the leak investigation is so damaging enough that he voluntarily turned in his OWN telephone records to the investigators.

    • 86 globalcitizenlinda
      June 2, 2013 at 7:57 am

I also happen to believe that by attacking AG Holder, the rightwingers are hoping to interrupt the efforts that DOJ & PBO are making to bring the terror investigations back to the regular justice system and stop this notion of enemy combatants and special jails like GITMO

      • 87 hopefruit2
        June 2, 2013 at 8:13 am

Linda I echo your excellent points Re AG Holder. In fact, I posted a series of tweets (pts 1-8) about what I believe all this anti-Holder MSM/GOP narratives are about. In addition to the GITMO issue that you mentioned, I also believe that the MSM/GOP do NOT want Dems to regain the House and keep the Senate in 2014. Holder has been very effective in combating voter suppression (as we saw with 2012), and will probably do the same in 2014. Thus they are trying to distract him and derail his progress on that front.

In addition to the other injustices (affecting mostly poor & minority groups) that he has been addressing, some of these folks just cannot come to grips with a Black person heading the justice department. I think it genuinely instills FEAR/resentment among some who know very well that Blacks have been on the receiving end of many blatant and subtle injustices, to which past DOJ’s turned a blind eye. This routine ignoring benefited many of those who now make up our GOP, MSM, as well as the PL contingent.

        • 88 globalcitizenlinda
          June 2, 2013 at 9:44 am

the primary reason for the attacks on AG Holder is the work he is doing on civil rights & you are very correct. If they can hinder this work then they are free to go forward with voter supression

    • 89 Bill
      June 2, 2013 at 8:13 am

I agree completely. Any time I hear someone on teevee going after AG Holder I email them if there is an email available. It seems many MSNBC shows no longer have email access. Bill Press went apoplectic the other day when I emailed him that he was no better than Morning Joe and Fox & Friends.

It is extremely disappointing that the DNC and elected Democrats are not showing AG Holder more support.

I hope everyone is watching Up With Steve Kornaki this morning. This is an excellent and long overdue discussion about the unprecedented Republican Party obstruction against President Obama’s administration. Norm Ornstein (AEI) is on the panel (see his article below). They are talking about the nuclear option and unprecedented filibuster abuse. It’s time to shine a light on this obstruction that has created gridlock in the congress. The American people voted to give President Obama a second term to implement his agenda and the Republicans are thumbing their noses at the electorate. Just think about the number of times you have used the term UNPRECEDENTED over the last five years when talking about Republican Party shenanigans. This has to stop. The American people have to get engaged because this obstruction is directly impacting their lives.

Parties prepare to reverse rhetoric on ‘nuclear option’ for judicial nominees

    By Norm Ornstein

    • 102 Don
      June 2, 2013 at 8:45 am

Ornstein is now talking about how President Obama should have nominated more judges to the bench when he first got into office, Ornstein must have been asleep, President Obama had bigger fish to fry namely focusing on the economy which was in the tank. Perhaps Ornstein thinks that the obstruction that President Obama faced didn’t exist. These fucking guys act like Mitch McConnell didn’t say that his number one job was to make President Obama a one term President.

AHuff has HPost and HP Live TV and she is still being booked why? The idea that AH is always booked as a person representing the Left is offensive to me. ABC doesn’t have two GOPers one supporting and another not supporting the TBGOPers. They always book stauch TBGOPers and then add lukewarm Dems.

I wish I could be a boss that ex-employees love, respect and admire!
