Night Owl Chat – Laura Mvula Live

I discovered Ms. Mvula right here on TOD, and have since become enchanted with her. And as I read her Wikipedia entry, I grew even more impressed: she’s director of two choirs in Birmingham, England, as well as graduating with a degree in composition from the Birmingham Conservatoire. Not your typical pop star. So, to ease the stresses of the day, some Laura Mvula.

“Green Garden”

“Human Nature”

“Sing to the Moon”

And “Father, Father”

This is your Laura Mvula night owl open thread.

Have been waiting to catch you LL, held this article for you……..some interesting stuff parlaying w/ our previous chats about AJA

    • May 29, 2013 at 11:48 pm

Oh I have no doubt that AJA will inject all sorts of energy and journalistic competition into the US News Corpse.

The fact is that AJ and AJE didn’t have to be self-sustaining until just recently. The Qataris will spend as much as they need to establish AJA as THE news source on US cable. And even Time Warner is saying that it might add AJA onto its lineup when it’s up and running.

When cable news consumers—at least those who watch CNN and MSNBC, for the Foxers are a lost cause—see what real journalism is like, they will flock in droves to AJA. Then those other two networks will have to decide whether or not they want to stay in business.

I actually never wanted a “liberal Fox”; I wanted a straight ahead news organization exploring all the stories that this country and the world have to offer. And if the truth hurts, so be it. “Objective” news served us well for most of the 20th century; the 21st will require it even more.

        May 30, 2013 at 7:49 am

LL, I value AJE for its very strong international coverage, which the US media ignores or distorts. I hope that aspect of their coverage remains strong as they focus on the US.

LP, thank you for that AJAM article which I would have missed otherwise. If AJAM deliver on an objective presentation of the news as promised it might be just what is needed to provide a prod and a model for the jokers currently news mongering. I can hardly wait.

Oh, my. Haven’t been paying that much attention to McCain after that dastardly act, but hasn’t he been keeping a bit quiet after his crash landing in Syria? Maybe this is why. What a total jackass.

    • May 30, 2013 at 2:11 am

Thus, why I posted these two tweets on Monday ….

My loathing of John McCain is boundless ….

    • 31 jackiegrumbacher
      May 30, 2013 at 7:46 am

Meta, “McCain didn’t realize…” should be the start of every sentence about him. He doesn’t “realize” when he puts his flat foot in international affairs and makes a delicate situation worse. He “doesn’t realize” that he has no business undermining the president and SOS in the ME. He “doesn’t realize” that he acts like a horse’s ass on every project he undertakes that involves some intricate knowledge of a subject. If you “realize” so little, then stay home, or, better yet, retire.

      • 32 57andFemale
        May 30, 2013 at 8:22 am

Let me get this straight: it’s okay for McCain to use U.S. resources, the efforts of SoS Kerry and the President to go to Syria and then behave like a traitor, pose with terrorists – and get away with saying, “I didn’t realize” when he DEMANDS that PBO be some cartoon hero President and know everything that was happening in Benghazi instantly, mount a perfect rescue mission where no one dies and convey every name of our operatives and sources?

McCain gets to say, “I didn’t realize” but the POTUS who was also monitoring breakouts of violence throughout the Middle East that day was supposed to do everything perfectly, as seen in Grampy’s fevered, demented tiny brain.

        I loathe Republicans.

I watched Lawrence O’Donnell tonight. I usually enjoy his show. When it is over, the replay of Chris Hayes comes up. I heard him say something incredibly snarky about PBO and the DOD investigations involving reporters and turned it off in disgust. He reminds me of the kind of bright and very conceited boy in a class who always knew all of the answers and then smirk at the other students. Then I thought of “Nellie” in Little House on the Prairie. That’s who he reminds me of, a male version of Nellie, who always demonstrates his perceived superiority over others. Why MSNBC thought he would be appealing is beyond me.

What is this whole hoopla about the press not meeting with the PBO and Holder because it is off the record/

    • 61 Bill
      May 30, 2013 at 7:07 am

The MSM is completely self absorbed with Holder. Bill Press and Morning Joe can talk about little else. They have no one supporting AG Holder in their discussions.

Bill, I agree with you. As soon as I heard Press was going to do another bash Holder show, I turned and started watching an old “mission impossible” episode. Bill has never liked Holder for some reason. I have never heard him talk about the positive things done by Holder. He also love the Politico nuts.

Is this a sincere move or this just a strategy to win an election — i.e., will he be a DINO?

“RI Gov. Chafee poised to join Democrats”

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Independent Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is set to formally join the Democratic Party.

Chafee (CHAY’-fee) plans to switch his party affiliation to Democratic Thursday morning at his local election office in Warwick.

Chafee has long said he was considering joining the party to help raise money to win a second term next year. He spoke at the party’s national convention last year in support of President Barack Obama and has said he shares many positions with the Democrats.

    “Where Congress Manages to Excel”

By Steve Benen – Wed May 29, 2013

…there’s one thing our legislative branch is apparently able to do quite well…they name post offices like nobody’s business. A new report from the Congressional Research Service, the nonpartisan research division of Congress, found that about 20 percent of laws passed in recent years were for naming post offices.

That’s fine, I suppose, but the concern isn’t really that Congress spends too much time naming post offices, but rather, that Congress isn’t doing enough other legislating. I don’t think anyone would much care how many hours are spent on post offices if plenty of other worthwhile bills were becoming law.

Ironic that Congress spends so much time naming post offices, bu seems anxious for them to go into bankruptcy.

“House Republicans are using the USPS’s financial crisis as an excuse to try to privatize it — they forget to mention that the post office would be profitable if it weren’t for Congressional interference.”

HEADLINE: Foreign manufacturers bringing jobs to U.S

// The U.S. is no longer on the losing end of the offshoring trend in global manufacturing. In the past three years, dozens of foreign firms have created about 5,000 U.S. jobs in the USA.

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. — For decades, U.S. manufacturers fled the country for China to drive down labor costs, then shipped products halfway around the world to sell to Americans, costing the U.S. millions of jobs. Now, some foreign manufacturers are turning that offshoring trend on its head. In 2011, British-based Rolls-Royce began making engine parts here in Virginia and shipping them to Europe and Asia to be assembled in jet engine factories. That same year, Siemens, a German company, started making power-plant turbines in Charlotte, N.C., most of which it’s shipping to Saudi Arabia and Mexico.

Remarkably, the long-jilted USA is becoming a manufacturing hotbed for dozens of foreign companies in aerospace, energy, chemicals and other industries. Many want to be closer to customers in the world’s largest market. Others are taking advantage of U.S. assets that have grown more valued in the past few years, including low energy costs, a relatively healthy economy, highly productive workers and a cheap dollar. //

Good Morning…….I have a question…….I really don’t understand what all this “rights” brouhaha is about……Do you have the right to tell National Security secrets that will endanger lives?…..Do you have the right to publish that information even though you might endanger lives by doing so?……I’m sorry but if you have not done anything wrong why would you care what means are used to catch people who are endangering lives……Both are traitors…..and I hope their asses are put UNDER the jail…..with RIGHTS come RESPONSIBILITIES.

    • 81 hopefruit2

The real brouhaha is that Eric Holder is head of the DOJ and the GOP (and MSM) can’t stand it. Has nothing whatsoever to do with “rights.” It’s all about trying to bring down Holder and PBO with manufactured BS. Fortunately, Holder is the wrong person to mess with, and they will find that out soon, if they haven’t already.
