Rick Ungar (Forbes): Every now and again, a political pundit is required to stand up and admit to the world that he or she got it wrong.

For me, this would be one of those moments.

For quite some time, I have been predicting that Obamacare would likely mean higher insurance rates in the individual market for the “young immortals” and others under the age of 40….

It is increasingly clear that I had it wrong.

Can anyone explain why there is almost no questioning in the media today of McCain’s trip to Syria? Anyone??

Steve Benen: It’s been nearly a week since President Obama announced his vision for ending the nation’s post-9/11 war footing and rejecting the notion of perpetual war, and while the pushback from the right was immediate, Republican opposition to the shift appears to be hardening.

…. of particular interest were Republican complaints about the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay ….. Rep. Peter King: “…. The president had five years to end this if he really wanted to. He could’ve moved most of those prisoners out of the country.”

….. I couldn’t help but laugh …. Less than a month after President Obama’s 2009 inauguration, King’s Republican colleagues began throwing a major tantrum over the very idea of closing the detention facility….. Three months later, Congress blocked the president from transferring detainees. A year later, they Congress did it again. Does King not remember any of this? If not, why not?

VP Biden, Dr Jill Biden and Colombia’s Commander of the Armed Forces Alejandro Navas, stand for the Colombian national anthem during a ceremony to honor Air Force servicemen fallen on the line of duty in a chapel at the Air Force base in Bogota, May 27

VP Biden arrives at the Narino Presidential house before a meeting with Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos in Bogota, May 27

NYT: President Obama will soon accelerate his efforts to put a lasting imprint on the country’s judiciary by simultaneously nominating three judges to an important federal court, a move that is certain to unleash fierce Republican opposition and could rekindle a broader partisan struggle over Senate rules.

In trying to fill the three vacancies on the 11-member United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit at once, Mr. Obama will be adopting a more aggressive nomination strategy. He will effectively be daring Republicans to find specific ground to filibuster all the nominees.

Greg Sargent: I’m not sure folks appreciate just how epic a political battle we could be heading for this summer, when a number of current storylines could culminate in Dems opting for the nuclear option to revisit filibuster reform via a simple majority.

Charles Pierce: Oh, look, the New York Times has decided to remind us that all the yapping about the dumbassery at the IRS really involves delays in the paperwork that would enable people to get in on a very lucrative scam that was made possible by the insane way we finance elections in this country.

The Wetumpka Tea Party, from Alabama, sponsored training for a get-out-the-vote initiative dedicated to the “defeat of President Barack Obama” while the I.R.S. was weighing its application. And the head of the Ohio Liberty Coalition, whose application languished with the I.R.S. for more than two years, sent out e-mails to members about Mitt Romney campaign events and organized members to distribute Mr. Romney’s presidential campaign literature.

….a lot of what is being called a “scandal” is plainly an attempt to police a scam designed by people who are trained to game any campaign-finance system, and who have made their careers doing precisely that….

Full post here

Ken Stern: The IRS Had the Right Idea …. What’s so bad about the IRS investigating nonprofit applications? That’s their job. The real scandal is that the ensuing hubbub will discourage them from doing it again.

Over the last week, commentators have expressed great outrage over the handling by the IRS of applications by Tea Party groups and others for 501(c)(4) status. In the haste to trigger the next administration-crippling “gate,” these analyses have largely ignored one of the most surprising aspects of this entire episode—that the IRS was actually trying to do its job.

Frank Schaeffer: …. The economy is rebounding. The stock market is skyrocketing. We’re out of Iraq and the war in Afghanistan is winding down. Immigration reform is on the way. Gay rights and women’s rights have been advanced as never before. The health care system is slowly being reformed and millions of previously uninsured Americans have been or are about to be covered.

Our first African-American president has battled the most virulently obstructionist congress ever in modern times. Liberal and conservative Americans who predicted doom, again and again, from early in the Obama presidency to the present have been proved wrong – again and again.

…. President Obama is a great president, a gracious and good man and smarter than all his critics combined.

Alec MacGillis (New Republic): On April 17, the bill to expand background checks on gun buyers failed in the Senate, and the fatalistic shrugs in Washington were so numerous they were nearly audible … it seemed to confirm a Beltway article of faith: There’s no point messing with the NRA. And that, many assumed, was the last we’d be hearing about gun reform.

But then something unexpected happened. Some of the senators who’d voted “no” faced furious voters back home … In the Senate, the backlash had an effect … Senator Joe Manchin, the bill’s Democratic co-sponsor, is still actively courting support from his colleagues. “It’s not going away,” he told me.

Why did these developments take so many elected officials and pundits by surprise? As New York Times columnist Tom Edsall has pointed out, political science research shows that politicians consistently overestimate the conservatism of their constituents. But in this case, there was something more debilitating at work. The political class often lets old assumptions blind it to shifting realities. And the absolute power of the NRA is one of the oldest and least-tested assumptions in Washington.

Pre-trial hearing of George Zimmerman. Zimmerman’s lawyer is such a scuzzballl but so far the judge isn’t buying his BS. He’s been trying to say Trayvon Martin was drunk and violent the night Zimmerman killed him and also said the Martins and their attorneys were abusing media coverage. Oh really? Zimmerman’s brother was on Piers Morgan night after night and on Fox News etc. The Judge also shut that line of crap down from him.

Yes, I saw that and it made me very angry. Bloomberg is not anyone’s friend and we’ve got to work extra hard to let other Democrats know that. Reid needs to reintroduce gun bill–after the nuclear option is invoked–and pass the background check bill. Begich and Pryor need to wake up.

      May 28, 2013 at 10:16 am

Yeah…and this is just how ****ing braindead they are!

Tom Zawistowski, president of the Ohio Liberty Coalition, another Tea Party group that has complained about the scrutiny it received from the I.R.S., sent out regular e-mails to members about Romney campaign events and organized protests around the state to “demand the truth about Benghazi” when Mr. Obama visited before the 2012 election. The coalition also canvassed neighborhoods, handing out Romney campaign “door hangers,” Mr. Zawistowski said.

The I.R.S. usually considers such activities to be partisan. But when Mr. Zawistowski consulted his group’s lawyers, he said, he came away understanding that the I.R.S. was most concerned with radio or television advertising. He said he believed that other activities, like distributing literature for the Romney campaign, would not raise concerns.

“It’s not political activity,” he said.

REALLY???????? What planet is that NOT a political activity??

    • May 28, 2013 at 10:21 am

This is just so much baloney. Besides the fact that the organizations participated in political activities, only a third of those who were set aside for additional scrutiny were tea party anyway. Most important, the investigator agreed (in the report) that most of the organizations which had been targeted were predominantly political.

For them, it was brilliant, for us, a huge headache!!

        • May 28, 2013 at 10:33 am

Jovie, once I read the investigative report, it all became very clear. They simply didn’t know how to process the applications because the guidelines kept changing. They asked for clarity (more than once) which they never received, so they were on their own to figure out what criteria to use. I don’t think anybody should have been fired and the tax-exempt status of all those organizations should be reversed.

I even have them going (in a safe space) downstairs. Doing a little laundry with very little bleach, this time, so I will be going back and forth to check the fumes. I almost fainted up in here a few weeks back. I am heavy on the bleach when washing my linen. Grew up like that, but brother strongly suggested that I lighten up a little. Sense of smell is not as alert anymore.

Pray for me, please. But the music playing softly downstairs and the glow from the candles is just a pleasant and lovely gift.HZ

This is the worst position we’ve found McConnell in yet. Had led Grimes by 4, 7 points on our previous two polls:

The CNN chick just said we noticed the Dow going a little cooky, so we want to know what happened?
As she is so happy about it? No, she sounded disappointed and put off! 😦

Dow up over 215 points on great housing news…..as I recall, housing was one of the things that needed to really take off before a good economic rebound. There you go.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to review a lower court decision that prevents the state of Indiana from cutting Planned Parenthood out of its Medicaid program.

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels (R) signed a bill into law in 2011 that prevents Medicaid recipients from being reimbursed for health services at Planned Parenthood because some of its clinics offer abortions. Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union challenged that law in court, and in October 2012, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals permanently blocked it because federal law guarantees Medicaid enrollees the freedom to choose any qualified health care provider.

Indiana asked the U.S. Supreme Court in February to review the Seventh Circuit’s decision, but the Supreme Court denied that request on Tuesday.

May 27 (Reuters) – News Corp said on Monday it is still reviewing whether it has any record of a notification from the United States government involving a subpoena for a Fox News reporter’s phone records.

The media conglomerate was responding to the Justice Department, which said it told News Corp about the seizure of phone records for James Rosen, a reporter with Fox News, in August 2010.

“While we don’t take issue with the DOJ’s account that they sent a notice to News Corp, we do not have a record of ever having received it,” said News Corp spokesman Nathaniel Brown, who added the company is looking into the matter.

Fox News, which is owned by News Corp, has said it never received a notification from the government.

Lawrence Jacobs, the former worldwide general counsel at News Corp during 2010, told Reuters he had no recollection of ever receiving it nor had News Corp found any evidence when it combed through Jacobs’ emails.

“I have no memory of it,” he said.

OK so who do we believe ? The Justice Department, or Fox News ? Ha ha…

I just hope Fox sent back some kind of response to that letter and that DoJ has the proof of it. That would be fun…

Chris Christie waiting to greet PBO – I’m beginning to think he doesn’t want the 2016 nom!

    • May 28, 2013 at 11:23 am

Christie is thinking about 2014 first

And maybe just maybe, though Christie disagree with POTUS on alot of things, Christie still respect the office of the President, unlike those other right wing nuts. And what they do agree on he doesn’t mind trying to work with this President for the good of New Jersey citizens.

        • May 28, 2013 at 11:43 am

If you recall the week before Hurricane Sandy, Christie was making derogatory jokes about President Obama not having a clue about leadership – because Christie was entertaining tea naggers on the Romney campaign trail. He knows nothing about respecting the Office of the President. He’s an opportunist – pure and simple.

Saw PBO pat Christie on the back and then put hand on back to guide him first up the steps of Marine I. I had these simultaneous thoughts—-President Obama is so nice, I just love that man—-and —-he’s “a smooth operator”.
