DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. — The soldier bent to his work, careful as a diamond cutter. He carried no weapon or rucksack, just a small plastic ruler, which he used to align a name plate, just so, atop the breast pocket of an Army dress blue jacket, size 39R.

    “Blanchard,” the plate read.

Capt. Aaron R. Blanchard, a 32-year-old Army pilot, had been in Afghanistan for only a few days when an enemy rocket killed him and another soldier last month as they dashed toward their helicopter. Now he was heading home.

But before he left the mortuary here, he would need to be properly dressed. And so Staff Sgt. Miguel Deynes labored meticulously, almost lovingly, over every crease and fold, every ribbon and badge, of the dress uniform that would clothe Captain Blanchard in his final resting place.

This reminds of the quip by Eric Hoffer in his book, “The True Believer”: “We can be absolutely certain about things we do not know.” To his credit, Winston Churchill, unlike the modern American conservatives, who are indeed “True Believers,” did not presume that God would welcome him with open arms, simply because he was a Christian and a conservative.

I watched this video almost daily during campaign 2012 season. Haven’t watched this since the election. I’m absolutely jazzed every time I watch it and think it should be required viewing at least once a month until the end of PBO’s 2nd term. Well, at least it will be required viewing for me. 😀 Thank you for the reminder prettyfoot58.

Good evening my peoples my peoples!

Thanks to all who joined me in celebrating Towel Day. It’s cosmically unfair that a man like Douglas Adams gets taken from us while Dick Cheney is on his fifth heart.

I am now enjoying a black chai tea as I wind down for the evening. The program we had at the library today was a smashing success, but sucked all the energy out of me. Managed to come home and sort out the living room, but now I’m spent. Missus and I will finish cleaning tomorrow.

    Great tunes, UT.

    See everyone tomorrow.

Another selection from Sam. I am having a party up in here

    ‘don’t forget the mashed potatoes’

i remember teen club dances, in junior high, and we’d do the mashed potatoes to every song that played! we could not stop mashin’ those potatoes! slow song: mash potatoes! this beautiful piece by sam cooke reminds me of our happy innocence, dancing any way we want, with a boy, with a girl, with that gorgeous hawaiian guy and his rich brown eyes, and with sam on the record player!

thanks, mellesia, for bringing this to the obama diary. it’s another reminder of what our president stands for: the innocence of the human heart.
    aloha oe~

Alright folks, is the TOD party still swinging or has it wound down already? I noticed at the top that Utal is our DJ so here’s hoping I arrived before the ‘last dance’. Indeed there’s still a wee bit of life left in me (I think), so let’s see how long before *I* wind down completely. 😀

    • 69 vcprezofan2
      May 26, 2013 at 2:16 am

Geez. You guys all wrapped up the TOD party without me even though I told you all I would be back. . At least you left the lights on so I didn’t have to fumble with the keyhole in order to get in. 🙄

        May 26, 2013 at 2:48 am

Alrighty then, since all TODobots are snug in their beds, camping under the stars, out grocery shopping, changing/feeding the baby or simply deciding not to dialogue with me, I’ll take myself off to bed.. Bye!

  34. May 26, 2013 at 2:39 am

Rest well for those in appropriate time zones, welcome to a new day for others 🙂

Good Morning Ms Chips and TODvillage!

Has there been an emergency shut-down of the village and I didn’t get the memo or didn’t hear the sirens?

    • 79 vcprezofan2
      May 26, 2013 at 8:02 am

Okay, since we seem to be on lock-down I’m going to get a novel and sit quietly in a corner and read. Call me when the village is up and running again.

This long weekend may be the perfect (last) time to remind young family and friends of the May 31st deadline to apply for this year’s Shawn Carter Scholarship. It’s an online application so there’s really time. I wonder how many students who fit their criteria for qualification actually know about this? I only recently discovered this scholarship existed.

The Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation is unique in that it offers scholarships to single mothers, children who attend alternative schools, students who have earned a GED, students with grade point average of 2.0 and students who have been previously incarcerated, etc but desire a higher educational opportunity.
