One of my patrons told me that I was a “softie”, and I needed to get used to the pain and misery of life.
Oh, I’m quite used to life’s pain and misery. One of the reasons I write, to lay them bare. But when I become “hard”, I may as well put a bullet in my head, because I’ve stopped being human.
I truly envy anyone who feels little or no pain in the face of the stuff life throws at us, but it just means they’re most probably incapable of experiencing the joy it throws at us too. So, together, we’ll try to get through the first, and cherish the second.
Once again, teachers showing their courage and love of their students; neighbors running toward the rubble to try to help others …. and a President who only inspires more of us to be just as courageous and always honors those who are.
We know America’s gravest enemy – the plutocrats and those that serve them and their greed.
Poor Oklahoma. My heart goes out to the victims of this storm. My girlfrind’s family lives there. She has heard from everyone and they are safe. He friend’s home is totally reduced to sticks.
I’ve had the same thought, amk. The teachers are selfless, and many have put their lives on the line to protect the children – in crisis after crisis. Thank heavens for the teachers. And shame on the GOP.

I think our dear LL was just making the point that the thread needed to be focused on reaching out to those in need of our help and honoring the brave folk who, once again, placed their lives on the line to save children, something the GOP has ZERO capacity.

I grew up in the ’50s watching Mahalia Jackson on my grandmother’s first black and white TV. Can still see my Mother in her rocking chair, listening to this music, hushing us, when we walked to my grandmother’s house to watch. Mahalia’s voice was a comfort, even to me at a very young age. She and Kate Smith (When the Moon Comes over the Mountain) were two of the only women singers on TV back then, at least that I recall. So, thanks for the memories.
It was written by a man whose wife and 2 daughters were lost in a shipwreck coming back from England. He made the crossing from the U.S, to England (possibly for a memorial service) and wrote this hymn as he approached the spot where the ship sank.
Just got back from celebrating my sweet nephew’s elementary school promotion ceremony this evening. It was so exhilarating to see those beautiful kids, their families and teachers sharing in such a joyous occasion.
Then to come home and see the devastation in Oklahoma of an elementary school with 51 lost, including some little ones confirmed gone and dozens missing. I feel guilty for being so happy today while that was going on in that little town. My heart goes out to the families and I pray the remaining children are found. Thank goodness we have such tremendous leadership in our President and Vice President, who have moved with the appropriate sense of urgency to get assistance to those in need. Good bless the people of Moore, OK.
That photo of the teacher hugging his rescued student goes beyond all ideology, all red state/blue state crap and gets to the heart of what PBO said in 2004–when we are at our best, we are all in this together, united as a people and as a country. Those who are sick and twisted enough to turn tragedies of human devastation into political theater (I’m looking at you, Sen. Coburn and you, Eric Cantor) are not only unfit to govern, they are not worthy enough to tie the shoes of that teacher and his student.
In times of despair, people pull together. If only Washington could reach a point of despair. Then, maybe then they will see the need to pull together as these amazing people have done.

Prayers to the people in the path of tornados tonight and to the men, women and children of Moore, OK. Thank God that PBO is President and that with so many natural disasters since his presidency the American people are in good hands. Their Government will help them because he cares about ALL Americans. Lord please give the teachers, fire fighters, police and all first responders the strength, calm, and your protection as they risk their lives for the people in their community.

Teachers are First responders just like Fire Fighters, Police, Doctors, Nurses, EMT, etc…..whenever there are crisis in Schools. How many times over the years that Teachers Stand tall and go beyond what are expected of them? Blessed are the Teachers who are unflappable for they are our unsung heros.

Jeff – I had food poisoning several years ago. I feel for you. Really painful. I hope you feel better, since you said it happened a few days ago. I’m careful about eating Chinese food from new places to this day!
so miserable, and really serious! my husband had food poisoning from eating raw salad (in a restaurant) that apparently hadn’t been washed…the convulsive vomiting caused a stroke! fortunately, it was a small stroke, and he’s fine now, but he had to be airlifted to a major city hospital, and had a long convalescence. so many nasty bugs lurking in food; washing and cooking are serious business! glad you’re better, and alive to tell the story, jeff!

Got food poisoning the other day. It was the worst feeling I had in a long time. It was my fault though for under cooking sausage.
Jeff – I had food poisoning several years ago. I feel for you. Really painful. I hope you feel better, since you said it happened a few days ago. I’m careful about eating Chinese food from new places to this day!

so miserable, and really serious! my husband had food poisoning from eating raw salad (in a restaurant) that apparently hadn’t been washed…the convulsive vomiting caused a stroke! fortunately, it was a small stroke, and he’s fine now, but he had to be airlifted to a major city hospital, and had a long convalescence. so many nasty bugs lurking in food; washing and cooking are serious business! glad you’re better, and alive to tell the story, jeff!
Yikes – so terrible! Glad he’s doing better. It’s scary that you can pretty much get food poisoning from anything.
isn’t it? i don’t remember this being such a problem in years past, but maybe i was just lucky.
