Rise and Shine

Alex Sietz-Wald: This week, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough joined the chorus of those decrying the IRS for targeting Tea Party groups for extra scrutiny in applying for nonprofit status. “You can’t allow the government to tread on political speech,” Scarborough said. “The Internal Revenue Service — the taxman — to go after their political beliefs. … I can’t imagine much worse than this,” he added.

Targeting nonprofit groups because of their political beliefs is wrong — pretty much everyone agrees on that. So today’s Scarborough must be outraged by his 2003 self, which gave this monologue on his show “Scarborough Country” on July 13, 2003:

The leader of the NAACP bashes President Bush and the Republican Party. Why is this clearly partisan group still being funded by your tax dollars? […]

[T]he NAACP continues to get a free ride off of taxpayers because of the tax-exempt status that’s conferred to them by our federal government, now, this despite the fact the NAACP produced and ran the most vicious campaign attack ad in the history of televised presidential campaign. […]

Rick Ungar: Over the first four years of the Obama presidency, the deficit shrunk by a total of $300 billion dollars. That is not the national debt- it is the amount of money we spend each year relative to the amount we take in. According to the latest CBO report,

“Compared to the size of the economy, the deficit in 2013 is much lower than in 2009, when Obama took office. The deficit will be 5.3 percent of gross domestic product this year, nearly half the 10.1 percent of GDP in 2009.”

The improvement in the deficit as measured against GDP is the direct result of the deficit falling to $845 billion for fiscal year 2013—a $300 billion improvement over the previous year. And the positive trend is projected to continue though the next fiscal year where the the annual budgetary deficit will fall again to $430 billion.

Five Takeaways From The CBO’s Analysis Of Obama’s Budget

Dylan Matthews: For the most part, the description of President Obama’s budget found in the Congressional Budget Office’s analysis of it jibes with the description included in the initial budget release. But the CBO analysis does highlight some interesting features of the proposal. Here are a few.

Interesting Interview With Sheila Bair – Former Director of Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) – About The Strength Of The Dodd-Frank Law.

Mike Konczal: Sheila Bair: The FDIC will take control of a holding company and put creditors and shareholders into a receivership where they, not taxpayers, will absorb any losses. This will allow the subsidiaries to remain operational, avoiding systemic disruptions, as the overall entity is unwound over time.

We worked hard to make sure taxpayer bailouts are completely prohibited. I think the language is very tight on that. One of the things that frustrates me with critics of Title II is that they perpetuate the myth of Too Big To Fail by insisting that the government is still going to do bailouts, notwithstanding clear language in Dodd-Frank to the contrary. And that just continues the moral hazard by reinforcing market perceptions that the big institutions won’t be allowed to fail.

There is no way Jonathan Karl would not have been fired on the spot if the president were Republican and he had used a Democratic “source.” That would have been the only headline story and it would have been used to taint all Democrats. JOB, I have a different take on this. I think Jon Karl knew exactly what he was doing. Just as CBS hired an independent investigator in the Bush military records ABC should the same in this situation, which in my judgement is even worse than what CBS did.

You are probably right, nathk. I’m also wondering whether or not Congress should be calling a hearing about this. I have tried to forget “the Bush years,” but wasn’t some reporter put in jail back then for failing to reveal her sources to Congress? Not sure who decides – but if it’s Boehner or McConnell, it won’t happen, of course. Sick-e-ning.

it is very important to continue to aggressively demand that Dems & media type keep digging to determine WHO forged the Benghazi email.

I know DC has all kinds of people but this attempt to create a record aimed at publicly destroying the credibility of PBO has me in place of deep anger – so much evil.

if the person who did the forgery and distributed the emails is left unchallenged, they will just keep getting more bold. they need to be stopped now.

I think that Team Obama is indicating that they want this inquiry pushed to its ultimate conclusion.

    NBC is reporting that:

‘Pfeiffer hits GOP for providing “doctored” Benghazi emails to press. “…You know they’re getting desperate here.”

Media Observers on ABC’s Jonathan Karl Benghazi Talking Points Story: “Sloppy” And “Inaccurate”

ABC’s Jonathan Karl is drawing criticism from journalism veterans and media ethicists who say his recent reporting on talking points related to the September attacks on diplomatic facilities in Benghazi, Libya has been “sloppy” and “highly problematic ethically.”

This is too soft a condemnation. This was deliberate on Karl’s part. He is utterly biased and leaped on the chance to damage the president. He has no business being in “news.” He’s a pr person for the Republican party.

    • 95 nathkatun7
      May 19, 2013 at 4:21 pm

      “…“sloppy” and “highly problematic ethically.”

These are weasel words! Jonathan Karl published falsified e-mails given to him by his source. He magnified that blunder by claiming to have read the actual e-mails. That means that Karl was not only lied to by his source (s) but he himself compounded that by lying. Jonathan Karl and ABC must be held accountable not only for publishing falsified information but also for amplifying that blunder by Karl’s lies.

If it was proven he was the “source”, it would raise my suspicions that his “reaching out” to Barack Obama when the young senator arrived in Washington was a cynical ploy. Maybe he sensed that Barack Obama would become very important within the democratic party and he cultivated the friendship in order to “spy” on the man, to know how he reacts, to know his vulnerabilities, etc…

I have read so many links about Benghazi! that I’m lost in what came from where – but from one of my forgotten links – it seems John Karl was the GOP link to get Benghazi from cable to the MSM – cause Issa was incensed that no-one out in the real world much cared about his great investigation.

If ever something backfired – this was it – so if the dems can get the much needed GOTV up and running for 2014 – the GOP has a problem – and it is to be hoped ISSA is part of the problem. What Californian votes for such a person? Just weird.

Susan Page tweets the ‘surprising’ good news about the poll after a week of manufactured controversies sparked by GOP witch hunts and unethical reporting by Jonathan Karl. Then she tries neutralize the 53% poll by making sure we know THERE IS A BUT COMING (cue the scary music) – there are “RED FLAGS”. Oh no, not that. there are red flags? You’re lovely UT, thank you so much. I wouldn’t worry about ‘Miranda’, methinks she’s an old ‘friend’ of the blog…..

Who is this Miranda? How dare she cast such aspersions on our Chipsticks? Let her start her own blog and find out how much work goes into it, and how long it takes to build what Chipsticks has built! She’s just plain nasty and jealous.

She is a dipstick, a troll, an idiot and a fool – she came here to make trouble – but discovered this sure isn’t the place for making trouble. She tried to stir resentment against Jay Carney just a day or so ago – lots of folks wondered why she was so obsessed about same – now we know.

Rep. Issa blows up GOP talking point on IRS

    By Smartypants

In needing to brag about all this, Issa told Bloomberg Businessweek:

“I knew what was approximately in it when we made the allegations about a year ago. This is one of those things where it’s been, in a sense, an open secret, but you don’t accuse the IRS until you’ve had a nonpartisan, deep look. That’s what the IG has done.

Ahhhh…so “you don’t accuse the IRS until you’ve had a nonpartisan, deep look.” And that’s EXACTLY what President Obama did. Once he’d seen the final report, he spoke out against the practice of political profiling and took action. And now AG Eric Holder is investigating whether any laws were broken.

Yet another “scandal” you can put a fork in.

And the crowd cheer – I don’t believe the polls – his approval is 73% – only the 27% who hate anything and everything would disapprove of PBO – and they make be reassessing

Katrina van den Swiveling twit just threw Holder under the bus on this Week.
Saying that the real scandal is the AP story and that this administration is just like Bush.

My 2 cents, the real scandal is the emo pricks and T Baggers in DC with their so called expert opinions.
