As I recall, the early 1980s were quite newsworthy (first space launched in 1981), and this was just an amazing eruption.

I’d heard of most of the big volcanoes in the Cascade range before, but Mt. St. Helens was a new one for me.

      Thanks for posting!

    did you folks see this?

‘ When Marine Sgt. Ross Gundlach served as a dog handler in Afghanistan, he told the yellow lab who was his constant companion that he’d look her up when he returned home.

“I promised her if we made it out of alive, I’d do whatever it took to find her,” Gundlach said.

On Friday, he made good on that vow with help from some sentimental state officials in Iowa who know how to pull off a surprise. ‘

Bringing this over from the tail end of the last thread…

Can someone help me here? I’d like to post that letter or blog post from the Marine saying that of course he would hold a President’s umbrella. I know I read it but I can’t find it and my search terms are just pulling up a bunch of extreme right-wing baloney that I wouldn’t have believed existed had I not seen it with my own (now bleached) eyes.

Susanne (and other west coasters), here’s information from last week’s Woods Hole discussion of the impact to the Pacific of the 2011 Fukushima disaster:

And in the category of not good news:

    http://www.climatecentral.org/news/as-seas-warm-fish-need-new-zip-codes-15992

I’ve lived on the west coast my entire life, and have visited the east coast only for brief stints; I’ve been told by people who have sampled both Atlantic and Pacific fish that fish from the same species taste distinctly different, depending on whether they’re Pacific (cold water) vs. Atlantic (warm water); most people seem to prefer cold water fish (think salmon).

    • 73 susanne
      May 18, 2013 at 7:08 pm

thanks, arapaho! even in hawaii, the preferred fish come from deep, colder water. by the time we have an active majority of americans working to combat climate change, i’m afraid it will be too late. fish losing habitat, drinking water sources drying up, oceanside communities displaced by rising water, etc etc. hard not to visualize a dystopian future.

    • 74 yardarm756
      May 18, 2013 at 7:25 pm

You got that reversed mate. Atlantic fish are cold water while Pacific is warm. Vis-a-vis, true lobster are found in cold water and have pinchers. Anything else is nothing but a large shrimp.

      • May 18, 2013 at 8:27 pm

        Ahoy, Cap’t! (saluting now)

I think you’ve mentioned being stationed in San Diego for awhile (Desertflower talks about North Island), and that’s where I grew up.

My statement was misleading; I was thinking of Florida fish, and of course you should have known that (LOL).

I think all salmon live in cold waters, with the best known coming from Alaskan and Norwegian waters.

I was thinking of the west coast longshore current that originates in Alaska which makes the water pretty cold; even in San Diego it’s usually too cold to swim without a wet suit until August. The east coast current flows the other way, so their seawater at the same latitude is warmer.

        • 76 yardarm756
          May 18, 2013 at 8:58 pm

Yeah. Is that why it rarely snows in Vancouver? The Japanese current runs through those waters and often the weather on that part of BC and southern AL is better than Chicago in winter.

My Chgo daughter—tweet not important—-just noting xmas decorations at some bar they went to after Cubs game today. Smart, funny, a great gal, if I do say so myself. She just had me laughing so hard on the phone I actually fell off the couch. Knows everything about everything sports—-almost on Barack Obama level. We used to catch her when she was a little girl in her bedroom, in the dark, post bed time, calling sports radio—–to opine about the Chgo Bears. A gem.

Illinois passes a medical marijuana bill for Gov’s signature. I would like to know how it works as a weight loss aid. Seriously!! That’s one of the reasons a person would qualify. So, now I might just start eating that ice cream every night…

Probably works as an alternative to food – I never had weight problems when I was a smoker (nicotine type) – but my weight doubled when I stopped – a cigarette was the food alternative – or vice versa.

      • 116 forus50
        May 18, 2013 at 8:48 pm

Agree on the cigarette but pot? That’s contrary to all conventional and non-conventional wisdom and evidence; as tested in trial tests by millions, young and old. Including our POTUS evidently. 🙂

        • 117 99ts
          May 18, 2013 at 8:56 pm

I never tried it – got hooked on nicotine at such a young age I was petrified about trying any other drug – being a teenager of the 60s – my family will never believe me! Consequently, I’ve never looked at any trials/evidence or anything else.

I’m just assuming that anyone that is inclined to adding weight (me!) looks for an alternative to eating. No evidence of any sort – I just know nicotine was my food alternative.

Another one of those waiting for the grandbabe days – I probably have to declare – grand babe has the No 1 spot in my heart – I will no doubt disappear at short notice 🙂 🙂

  34. May 18, 2013 at 8:12 pm

    For context:

    (40,000, 000 words/365 d)/3 yr x 10h per day = ~ 3653 words per day

If you think that’s a lot of words, I can type easily type 60 words per min and typing is way slower than speaking. At 60 wpm, it would take only ~ 1 hour (not 10) to type 3653 words.

And, if you’d like to learn more about the fact that folk have been paying attention to this issue:
    http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/04/10/the-power-of-talking-to-your-baby/

The real scandal in America is that we allow a few plutocrats and their political and #NEWSTAINER servants to have any influence whatsoever on our society.

BTW, I can imagine President Obama issuing a challenge to app developers to craft all kinds of cool ways to help mom’s and dad’s track the number of words they are speaking to their children and you could imagine the contests and prizes that could be offered to those exceeding various levels as well as way more innovative ways to have speaking and reading to infants become a national objective and source of pride for every parent.

    Yes We Can

    • 129 susanne
      May 18, 2013 at 8:27 pm

i’m so glad it is now considered good parenting to talk talk talk to your baby! i used to get a lot of looks, wheeling my infant around in the grocery store, commenting on the various products. ‘now we’re making a biiiiig left turn into the frozen aisle. feel the cool air in this aisle?’ and also, ‘look at the pretty colors of the vegetables! here’s a green one, and a yellow one, and a red one….’
      🙂

      • May 18, 2013 at 8:38 pm

Susanne, from all that we are learning about the formation of the brain, post birth, by age of 3 children who have not heard a large number and large variety of words – and the speaking of words in a way that associates them with ‘things’ (images, objects, etc) – are severely disadvantaged.

The amazing thing is that it costs nothing to speak to infants, young children. In fact, one of the likely least costly ways to break the cycle of intellectual disadvantage is to have the moms and dads just speak to their infants. Very savvy folk have suggested instituting programs for teenage moms to teach them how to speak and read to their infants and challenging dads of those children to do the same – irrespective of whether mom and dad are married. You get the point. All we need to do is make this incredibly simple and yet totally profound message widely known – from the day your child is born, speak and read to them, all the time about all kinds of things (not just instructing them to ‘stop’ or ‘don’t’ or …. ).

        Yes We Can

      • 131 99ts
        May 18, 2013 at 8:50 pm

Susanne – I used to do that – At times I felt like a complete fool – discussing the color of the soap powder packages – “Do you think we should buy the blue packet or the green packet” – but from birth to 3 children go through such a massive learning period – nothing else ever equates – they use all input – it is so important.

    • May 19, 2013 at 2:29 pm

Errors above – should have been “3653 words per HOUR in a 10h day” Comfortable rate of listening – e.g., to an audio book is 150-160 words per minute. So, 3653 words per hour is a very modest rate of speech or a mom or dad (grandma, sister, etc) reading to an infant.

Please add your name to get this piece of crap fired. Jon Karl not only did not validate the information given to him by some GOP congressperson or aide but then lied — stating that he had “obtained” the emails. For his big breaking news Diane Sawyer introduced him with (paraphrasing) “our own Jonathan Karl who has some disturbing news that seems to contradict what the White House has previously stated…”

If Jake Tapper hadn’t called him out on this, this would have catapulted into crazy land for POTUS.
