Eyes on Prize: We have to win in 2014

WE. HAVE. TO. WIN. IN. 2014!!!

Nothing. Else. Matters.

That is the North star we must follow no matter what fake scandals are strewn in our path. Apathy and Complacency taught us a huge lesson in 2010, whose ramifications stall our progress now. Many of us failed to appreciate how recalcitrant entrenched plutocratic power is. So we have to defeat the GOP and their brand of UNAMERICAN callousness toward the 99% of this country’s population. When someone shows you who they are, believe them. Republicans do NOT care about this country’s welfare, only to grab for their monied friends. Period.

As President Obama said on election night 2008 the road will be long, our climb will be steep, but America, we will get there.” Every one of those predictions has been borne out. Good news is we conquered them in 2012. But we have more fight on our hands. Today’s 37th repeal Obamacare vote should remind us that Republicans never give up on eroding our rights. They keep gnawing and gnawing and gnawing at our rights until they can wear us down and chip away till we have only empty shells left.

We all know the following cases in point: Reproductive Rights of women, Section 5 of Voting Rights Act, Personhood Amendment bills, Separation of Church and state, Workers Rights, Consumer Protection, Environmental protection…and on and on..! Also, what everyone including corporate media thought initially was the 3rd rail of politics – Not touching Social Security & Medicare – is now shrugged at, thanks to Paul Ryan’s thrice-voted on budget . That is what they do, move the Overton Window ever rightward!

The charade we’ve been seeing from Republicans since President Obama’s reelection that reached an absurd climax this past weekend is ALL ABOUT mobilizing their base for 2014. Actually, the ramped up hatefest is a sign of panic. They have aborted their own plan to “reach out” to constituencies they lost, even before they implemented it. The entire Priebus review was a sham intended to massage the centrism fetish of corporate media lackeys and Independents. Republicans know that they CANNOT change.

So with backs against the wall they are returning to the Southern Strategy that failed to win them 2012, this time on steroids. Insane. Yes. But it is the insanity they know best. They will double down on kamikaze tactics because their base is in nihilist mode. Burn down the darn house! The Conservative puppetmasters are desperate to weaponize that nihilism for their greedy benefit, since they don’t have to give their base anything tangible in return, save the adrenaline rush from heightened Obama-hate. Our side’s resolve to govern will be tested even more.

The narratives will get worse. Why? That’s because the Republican base is not interested in the veracity of any of their fake “scandals.” In fact whether the Republican leaders or moneybags themselves believe them is beside the point. The “scandals” are simply trigger points in a larger scheme to prime their base psychologically for peak wingnuttiness at election time. For this phase, the real ploy is to generate noise warfare. The narrative is simply a soundtrack doubling as a cattle call. The Republicans KNOW their base well. And that base is only motivated by one thing and one thing ONLY: Grievance. And by golly the power hungry Conservative puppetmasters are going to stroke every darn erogenous zone of their base to grab power using every trick in their Atwater book taken to the nth degree.

Actually the more the basis for their outrage is proven to be WRONG, the more consolidated their feelings of being besieged. It is a well-choreographed and calibrated strategy to prime grievance to the point where it is automated and actionable even without anything to launch it, just like cyber worms. We saw it in the run up to the hellish summer of “Death Panels” in 2009. What we saw the teabagger caucus led by Ted Cruz, Louie Gohmert, Michele Bachman, plus Mitch McConnell do yesterday outside Congress is intended to launch death panels 2.0.

The Good News, we’ve seen that movie before. The hate may be ultra-rabid, but there’s something stale about it. So what do we do practically and pragmatically to defeat them?

My next series of Posts will be ACTION DIARIES: Here’s how we start:

Rule # 1: Don’t waste energy & bandwidth on the Professional Left (me included). In spite of their dangerous fecklessness, the Professional Left is not our target. The GOP is. The corporate media too deserves our unrestrained scorn. The PL has media bark, The GOP has legislative and electoral bite. Focus on the GOP.

Rule # 2: FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS. We have limited time and resources in the fight to kick GOP House out and safeguard Senate in 2014. Go full bore on the few House Wingnuts in swing districts. Attack ALL GOP senate candidates like we did Romney. No mercy.

Our task:

1. We have to defend 20 Democratic Senate seats like our lives depend on it. They do. Even the most conservative Democrats have a modicum of integrity and sanity to govern in our interest (e.g. Manchin, Landrieu, Kay Hagan).

2. We must win 17 House seats to gain majorities

3. We must take back as many of 30 GOP controlled governorships as possible. 2010 electoral lapse cost us Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Iowa, Maine, Florida. 2012 cost us North Carolina.

4. Reverse GOP supermajorities in State legislatures that have eroded women’s rights and voting rights
SCOTUS SCOTUS SCOTUS: This should be the subtext and overtext to everything we do. If this SCOTUS is gonna be giving us CU and venal corporate-siding rulings every single time, then we just have to get Democrats especially in the Senate confirmation process to get us the SCOTUS we want.

ACTION #1:  Get signed up in your state (or any state) to work our butts off for these Senate Seats that we are defending to maintain our majorities:

Seats to Retain:

Mark Begich (D-AK)

Mark Pryor (D-AR)

Mark Udall (D-CO)

Chris Coons (D-DE)

Brian Schatz (D-HI)

Richard Durbin (D-IL)

Mary Landrieu (D-LA)

Mo Cowan (D-MA pending Markey/Gomez election)

Al Franken (D-MN)

Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH)

Tom Udall (D-NM)

Kay Hagan (D-NC)

Jeff Merkley (D-OR)

Jack Reed (D-RI)

Mark Warner (D-VA)

6 Democratic Open seats: Iowa, Michigan (Dem Gary Peters contesting), Montana, New Jersey (Dem Cory Booker contesting), South Dakota, West Virginia

GOP seats to fight for: Susan Collins (R-ME) We should fight for this

Rule # 3: Remember to KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) when talking to voters about electing democrats to support our President to govern

What has Obama done for you? Here’s a start:

Read more here on health reform

Preventative Care (see here)

b) Tell the Independents and moderates this: “In September 2008 did you look at your 401k/403b statement? And the next one in December 2008? Good. Who was in power at that time? Have you looked at your recent statement? Yep. PBO saved your 401k.

c) Republican family member or acquaintance who is worried about “debt” and “gover-nnnnnn-ment spending”. Show them the CBO report released on Tuesday May 14th. For kicks ask them whether putting 2 wars and billionaires’ tax breaks on the nation’s credit card was the moral thing to do.

d) To an Emoprog whiner: “So you are disappointed with this President after 4.5 years in office and you will sit out the 2014 elections like you did in 2010? Great. How did that work out for the liberal agenda from 2011 till now? You know how long the wingnuts have been unhappy? Since FDR. They have never stopped fighting to turn the clock back. Talk about intestinal fortitude!!!

e) And the one who says all Dems are corporatist schmucks “I’m not prepared to vote for the lesser of two evils….yada, yada yada…”, you say “Sure, Not voting for the lesser of two evils gets us the worse of two evils. How’s that for a batting average?

As an addition to the roll of blog tyrants, I welcome more suggestions for future ACTION Diaries. We have to prime our pump.

The Lutz rule of how to make a ‘pub point, regardless of the topic:

Filibuster, use plenty of run on sentences, never let the other person talk, raise your voice, over talk, hyperbole is your friend, use strawman arguments, breathe, then raise your arms in the air…..wave ‘em like you just don’t care.

    Good points.

Suggestion: For those who don’t live in the states where seats are being contested, you can either donate to the DCCC or DSCC or DNC or pick any Democratic candidate you want and donate to them. Money in the American electoral system is power.

Also, if your district is represented by Democrats in the House, find who your congressperson is and think about donating or volunteering for them.

p.s. Also find out if you are represented by Democratic state legislators so you can donate or volunteer because most of where the extreme rightwing laws come from are state legislatures.

Excellent post zizi!!! This is a call to action, this is how we stay focused, this is what is important, this is what I’m talking about! Use our energy to get stuff done. There’s real work to do. We know who our real opponents are, and those are the people who should get our attention. We can not afford another 2010. It will be more than difficult, next to impossible, to unseat ‘pubs in gerrymandered districts. It will be hard, but possible to change some state governorships, that came about due to our 2010 voting apathy. Coincidentally, 2010 was a also a census year and those elections had consequences that reached further than they would have in a non-census year, redistricting among them.

    Thank you for this.zizi.

I concur with what cookermom said!!

I have been so fed up and angry over the ridciulous circus caused by the GOP on these non-issues, and the Media’s complicity in keeping it alive and circulating mis-information!

As they say “Don’t get mad, get even”, that’s where I’m going to focus my energies. I want the GOP to suffer and suffer HUGE LOSSES come November 2014!

      Enough is Enough!!!!

Great post zizi – tons of good information and concisely presented. I’m going to bookmark it to refer back to frequently.

I will be very involved – just as much as I did for POTUS in “08 and “12 as it really is about him in 2014. We need to preserve all his legislation; not have it constantly challenged or have to have him veto things that a GOP Senate and House have passed.

It’s only a tough road if we don’t get people to the polls. The Dems hugely outnumber Republicans so it’s just about turnout – it’s not really about debatable issues or fence-sitters or the economy. It’s just getting people to the polls who usually only come out in a presidential election.

I wish that there was some fantastic message that the DCCC or DSCC or OFA would put together that captures that it REALLY is President Barack Obama on their local/state ticket.

Way to go, great post. And I have to say, I think the GOP is giving us a big assist with all their overreach on these “scandals”. Their true believers will continue to follow like lemmings, but moderates and independents are getting fed up with the GOP and Dems are getting more fired up to see them go down.
The fact is, the GOP base is shrinking whereas the Dem base is growing and the GOP is firing up that Dem base at the same time they try not to lose their own.

Zizi…excellent piece. Clear analysis and direction. I’m so glad you used the word “nihilism” that exactly describes what these people are acting on. I haven’t heard anyone use this word before, but I have thought this so many times. These people remind me of the nihilists of the early 20th century in Russia…..no idea of what to do, just BRING IT DOWN! Let’s promote this word with regard to these people.

I will act on your idea of financially adopting Senators and Reps outside my state…..since I am in the red state of the red states…..Oklahoma. I did that in 2012, adopted Debbie Stabenow and Sherrod Brown, because I was born in Ohio and lived in Michigan. So, I will find two Senators to adopt and two representatives to adopt. Thank you so much for the list.

Anastasia Adair, a 22-year-old Colorado woman, died after she was accidentally shot with an assault rifle she had recently purchased, TV station KMGH reported on Thursday.

Adair’s husband, Shane, and other witnesses told police she was drinking with friends in her garage Tuesday night and wanted to show off the weapon. It fired twice, hitting her once in the head as she brought it to the room and passed it to Shane.

Lt. Gary Toldness, of the Federal Heights, Colo., police department, told KMGH initial analysis appeared to be consistent with the reports of an accidental shooting, though the investigation was continuing. He also said Adair purchased the weapon at a gun show in March and described it as an AK-47-type rifle

President Obama on Friday will announce a new executive order designed to streamline the permitting process for federal infrastructure projects during a visit to Baltimore, the latest stop in a campaign-style jobs tour designed to drive the White House’s second-term economic policy agenda.

The executive order will mandate federal agencies implement so-called “best practices” to streamline the process for obtaining federal permits to work on infrastructure projects. The White House says the move will help jumpstart construction on vital transportation systems in need of urgent repair.
“Those practices range from expanding information technology (IT) tools to strategies for improving collaboration, such as having multiple agencies review a project at the same time, instead of one after the other,” said a White House aide.

So, I just found out that during the time a 501C4 applicant is under review by the IRS, the applicant can act as if it was approved. If, for some reason the application is denied tax exempt status, then the denial becomes effective 30 days after it is issued, it does not work retroactively. All of this poutrage is so inconsequential, even if the process took 3…..gasp…..3 years!

Once again, this over reach will not sit well with anyone who doesn’t wear tinfoil or see black helicopters swarming overhead.

Zizi 2, this is a brilliant and important message and we have to treat 2014 with the level of dedication and turnout that we did in 2012. I would add that, if we can, we should try to help identify and then encourage candidates to run for office, especially the ones for state governments. If you think someone would make a good state rep and they haven’t stepped forward yet, give them a call and encourage them to run. We have Republican state reps in our area who are rarely challenged because the Dems think their odds are too great. But you cannot win if you don’t run, so please help draw out those who need a little nudging. That’s why no election is too small, even the local ones this year. When people in a purplish area see that Democrats can win, they’re embolden to step forward and then we have a chance.

Aside from our numbers, we have one big advantage on our side. The Republican governors that were elected in 2010 have been universally awful. People have now witnessed what happens when you put that much power into Republican hands and many are turned off. We need good candidates to run for, but we have a whole lot of badness to run against.

DETROIT — Shares of General Motors reached an important milestone on Friday, topping their initial public offering price of $33 for the first time in more than two years.

The automaker’s stock, which has been on a tear since January, reached $33.58 Friday morning before slipping back to $33.52, up 3.5 percent, around midday. The auto giant sold shares to the public for $33 in a November 2010 IPO, but they hadn’t traded above that price since May 4, 2011.

The rally is good news for the U.S. Treasury, which has been selling off its GM holdings. Taxpayers still own 241.7 million shares, as a result of the government’s $49.5 billion bailout of the company in 2008 and 2009.

GM two weeks ago reported strong first-quarter earnings on sales in North America and China. The shares have gained almost 14 percent this year.

Friday’s increase was likely due to general market gains and better prospects in Europe, where GM has lost money for more than a dozen years. The European automakers association said Friday that registrations rose last month for the first time in 18 months. European Union sales were up 1.7 percent, but GM sales fell 4.5 percent.

It’s still in progress, and it’s not going well for the ‘pubs who insist on trying to get Acting Commissioner Steve Miller to tie this whole thing into a WH issue. Mr. Miller remains unflappable and refuses to take the bait, no matter how red in the face they get. They use inflammatory words, and the Lutz school of out shout, out talk, and flame throw tactics. The IG Mr. George is also very concise, precise, and has remained unfazed with all of the nonsense. For both of them to be Bush appointees, I’m pleased with their testimony and demeanor.
