The First Lady at EKU

Video of speech here and hereReaction of Graduates

Preview of the lead up to the First Lady’s visit:

The Fisrt Lady receives her honorary doctorate:

United States First Lady Michelle Obama came not with answers but with questions for the Eastern Kentucky University degree candidates she addressed at spring commencement today.

The first was “Who are you going to be?”

Explaining that it will be their response to adversity, their resilience and determination that defines them, the First Lady told the graduates, “If you’re willing to dig deep, if you’re willing to pick yourself up when you fall, if you’re willing to work and work until your weaknesses become your strengths, you’ll develop a set of skills that you can mold and apply to any situation you encounter, any job you might have, any crisis you may confront.”

First lady Michelle Obama urged Eastern Kentucky University graduates on Saturday night to reach out to people with different political beliefs, saying the country would benefit from the conversations.

“If you’re a Democrat, spend some time talking to a Republican,” Mrs. Obama told about 600 education, business and technology graduates at the third and final commencement ceremony of the day. “And if you’re a Republican, have a chat with a Democrat. Maybe you’ll find some common ground, maybe you won’t.”

The first lady suggested that they visit senior centers to benefit from the experiences of people with plenty of “life experience under their belts.” She also pointed them to religious congregations different than their own, saying they might hear something in a sermon “that stays with you.” And she predicted they would learn something if they reached out “with an open mind and an open heart.”

“And goodness knows, we need more of that,” she said. “Because we know what happens when we only talk to people who think like we do. We just get stuck in our ways.”

First lady Michelle Obama invoked the spirit of student veterans Saturday as she challenged graduates at Eastern Kentucky University’s spring commencement to seek out diverse experiences and find ways to serve the community.

“When you’ve worked hard and done well, as I’ve said, the least you can do is reach back and give a hand to somebody else who can use that help,” Obama told a cheering crowd of 6,200 who filled EKU’s Alumni Coliseum in the last of three commencement ceremonies.

In a 20-minute speech that touched on struggles with affordable education and post-college employment, she asked graduating seniors to contemplate the resilience of student veterans who are one day wearing a rucksack and carrying a firearm and the next day wearing a backpack and carrying a textbook.

“If you are willing to dig deep, if you are willing to pick yourself up when you fall, if you are willing to work and work until your weaknesses become your strengths, then you will develop the type of skills that you can mold and apply to any situation you might encounter,” she said.

thanks for the post LP, I watched her speech live last night. I just some times have a hard time to find the right words to describe this wonderful First Lady. She is a wonder and we are so lucky to have her and her husband, setting the bar pretty darn high for the next administration. 🙂

Also, I believe you guys will get a kick out of this. My doorbell rang STRIDENTLY this morning, and as per usual when I’m not expecting anyone I rarely rush to answer. Anyhow, I wandered to the window to spot who was so bold and noticed a car I didn’t recognize leaving the driveway. Opening the door, I was greeted by the clematis plant and no other means of identification. Of course the name of the plant was a clue.

I’m as happy for you as I will be for myself when I can say I’m finalizing. I have a new incentive though. Grandkids will be coming for the summer in two week. I hope that’ll light the fire I need to push it to the finish line.

            May 12, 2013 at 1:38 pm

Hon, that’s ‘finalizing’ in one other area only!!!! I’m choosing to countdown in stages so that I don’t get (any more) frustrated. 😉 I NEVER imagined this would take so long, and the basement isn’t factored into this!

Are you aiming to finish the first floor or just the kitchen before the grandkids arrive?

            • 33 cookemom
              May 12, 2013 at 1:56 pm

I’m going for just the kitchen now. Reality set in and i just have to face the fact that: 1. i shouldn’t have tried to do the floor myself, now it’s a matter of principle that I finish it. 2. i should realize by now that the basement may not get done before they leave. 3. the yard and deck area should probably factor in cause thinking that time will stand still for me is not true. 4. the wood floors will NOT be done this summer. 5. If my bedroom and upstairs bath gets done, I’ll probably be too old to remember that it was even done and what the rooms are used for. 6. Most importantly, i will, will, will, enjoy my grands even if we’re eating on boxes, floating around the basement, and sleeping on cowboy cots.

Other than that, everything’s right on schedule LOL!!!

Will be ‘willing’ you on over the next two weeks! 😀 😀

Thank you all for the many kind comments in response to my narrative to my mother’s passing. I am now the oldest living generation. I am so touched that we have such wondrous role models of motherhood in the first family in the persons of Michele Obama and her mother, Mrs. Robinson. The medieval mystic Julian of Norwich (one of my role models) spoke of motherhood as being the essence of the nature of God, and even referred to Jesus as Mother.

Amen. As the Bringer of Light to the Heart Center, teaching us to Love, Christ surely is the perfect Balance of human female and male. That his message has been distorted for material and capital gain is sad, but not all of us buy into that – most embrace the Love and Light part! We are changing the world, we really are.

Happy Mom’s day all you O’s!!!! What another great getting up day at the whole TOD homestead!!! Plenty of XXX’s and OOO’s to all you mothers, including any dads who are filling that role as well. I have spent the entire day on Skype with #1, #2, and grandkids #3 and #4, who are spread out all across the universe. We were chatting it up and coming and going, grabbing our cereal, getting coffee, talking, laughing, listening to music and everything else imaginable. That’s hours and hours joining hands and hugs that spanned this country and the Atlantic. Skype is by far the best invention, like EVER….and it’s FREEEE!!!!!

I had to finally tell them I had to go, cause my rump was taking root in the chair. Maybe it’s because they’re not with me today, that today turned out to be way up there on the list of one of the best Mother’s Day for me like……EVER!

Just took a long walk on a lovely, sunny, breezy Mother’s Day morning. Big tents selling flowers were doing land office business and everybody was wishing Happy Mother’s Day to each other. Today is the day to put rabid Republican haters aside and fill our hearts with the good things. I’m thankful for our wonderful family in the White House–the best in history, in my opinion; I grateful for my beautiful, big-hearted family who bring me joy every day; I’m humbled by the company and support of good friends who seem to be always there when it counts. And I never stop marveling at the loving community Chips created on this site. We got our work cut out for us for 2014 with miles to go to the goal line. But for today, I’m letting the peace settle in.

Good morning all you wonderful TODer’s. A very special Happy Mother’s Day to all of us mother’s of all kinds. You don’t have to have birthed a child to be called a mother or to loved like a mother. I feel so blessed to have had a wonderful mother who passed away in ’97. The last 15 years of her life was filled with fighting alzheimers. At times it was hard to remember my beautiful mother. I think so much about her now because I am now of the age she was when we knew she had alzheimers. It is a horrid disease. But the memories now are so sweet. She was so special. I have 2 wonderful son’s in daughter-in-laws who let me know all the time how much they love me. I am blessed.

Have a beautiful day everyone. I love that we have such wonderful examples of what a compassionate, loving family is like in both our First and Second families.

    Happy Mother’s Day to ALL!

Have some more energy today even though another resltess night. Will ask if they can switch to me Ambien. One am on isn’t knocking me out sufficiently enough.

Color me skeptical about this IRS/Tea Party scandal.

    1. No one has sympathy for the Tea Party.
    2. We’ve watch them threaten the POTUS many times over the years
    3. GOP has cried wolf too many time and only certain liberals seem to want to care about this
    4. Media will help GOP flog but will bring out the worse characters to remind the American people why we hate the GOP – So be prepared to see more Dick Cheney, Sarah and or Karl Rove. Yep. These people will certainly turn the tide here.
    5. Did I mention that no one gives a shit about the T Party?
    6. These morons are going to muck up a perfectly good scandal by mixing in Trump, birth certificates, New Black Panther Party and comparing it to every major GOP scandal is history. THEN try to tie to it the 2014 elections. Good luck with that. MORANS!

    • 60 jackiegrumbacher
      May 12, 2013 at 3:08 pm

I so agree with you GOB and am glad you’re feeling more energy today. You really are one tough cookie. The right will overplay its hand again because they approach every situation with the subtlety of a meat cleaver. Having the hated Dick Cheney weight in on Benghazi is like hearing a voice from the crypt—major, big turnoff and epic fail for anyone but the extremist right. What they will end up doing is unifying the Dems and turning off Independents. Right now, they are practically shilling for Hillary and shoveling votes toward her. Nobody involved with Benghazi is running for office in 2014. We are focusing on governors and individual congressmen and senators. These are LOCAL races in people’s minds. So if this is in aid of 2014, it won’t work. And if they think they’re bringing Hillary down with this, well, as you said, “good luck with that, Morans,”

All good wishes for getting better and better – the IRS discussion is a laugh – the guy/gal doing the checking should get promoted – the TP is nothing but a political organization.

A few days ago I was getting so annoyed about Benghazi! and the IRS and the filibuster and whatever – so I went to U Tube and watched the media covering election nights 2008, 2012 – thy all ranted about polls being wrong, the GOP being close etc etc etc – until they had to admit they got it WRONG. So these other issues will pass – the GOP and the media have been WRONG since they imagined those weapons of mass destruction.

They want to get rid of him by any means necessary, even if it’s based on nothing but lies, even if it’s nothing but made up lies. They tried but couldn’t stop us from voting him in office, now they are trying to act as if our vote didn’t count and these racists ass white men are trying to take him out of office .

If they even try, AB, the blowback from PBO’s supporters will make a tsunami look like a mild tide. Even Bill Clinton soared in popularity when the R’s pulled the impeachment trick and he made an not insignificant contribution to that fiasco himself. Republicans have never understood what they’re dealing with when it comes to PBO and his supporters. They haven’t the smallest clue of the depth of the feeling we have for him and level of support we give him. If they pull anything against him, they will learn to regret that move for a generation or more.

There is no reason on the face of the earth for impeachment – what is it about the GOP? Those weapons of mass destruction were grounds for annihilating the Bush White house – yet the democrats did what is done in a democracy – they voted the GOP out of power. The American right wing seems to be unable to accept that their way is the wrong way – per the voters of America.

My son is taking the family out for Mother’s Day brunch at the lovely restaurant where he works:) I am so blessed to have 2 amazing children. I’ll probably need a nap or something when I get through with brunch…didn’t eat breakfast this morning…was saving myself for all the goodies:)

Sandy Hook mother’s words on this day. We will not forget.

There have been nearly four thousand gun related deaths since Newtown. Too many mothers are spending too much time talking to their children in heaven instead of across the kitchen table….It is time, as six-year-old Ana Marquez-Greene once said, to “let love win.” There are 150 million parents in this country and it’s our goal to unite them in a place of common ground. This is the Sandy Hook Promise.
This Mother’s Day, we encourage you to make the Sandy Hook Promise with us. Today is not about guns, laws or politics; it is about mothers and love. As “Sandy Hook Moms,” we often hear the phrase “I can’t imagine what you are going through.” Well, please imagine it. Imagine what it’s like to lose a son or daughter to gun violence and encourage your elected officials to do the same. We never thought our school, our community or these innocent children would ever face the unspeakable. The more we as parents expand the boundaries of our love beyond our family and to all children, the more likely a tragedy like the one that broke our hearts will never happen again.

based on his comments, former DOD Sec Bob Gates is trying to warn republicans not to be so stupid in their handling of Benghazi. however, a majority of gop are so full of hate that they will not listen and instead try to go the way they did WJC.

I can only say, Please Proceed, GOP

I am in PA at UPENN for my daughter’s graduation and to help here move to the big apple. And if that isn’t special enough, Uncle Joe ‘the Magnificent’ Biden is commencement speaker.

Needless to say a lovely mons day for me.

Dear TODobots, sadly the anticipated M-D sun never did arrive in my locale, but if anyone is feeling nostalgic about snow I will gladly share the snow flurries (sorry you missed the hail earlier) that are playing joyfully outside. What do you say? Sharing what you have is a sign of good friendship, no?

      May 12, 2013 at 5:37 pm

Ai yai yai! {{{{VC}}}} you just send those snow flurries right on out here to Seattle – I’m sure no one would mind a bit! We can have snow any month of the year, so maybe no one would even notice!

        May 12, 2013 at 5:47 pm

I’m sending them right now before you change your mind.
Can’t decide if an ‘Abracadabra’ or just ‘Go!’ or ‘Go to Seattle, please’ is what’s needed. Maybe I should try all three, just in case. I’ll give it an hour or two to see if it worked, and thanks. 😛

Unbelievable phenomenon—-overflow of ice overtakes resort (and homes) at Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota–like a slow moving frozen tsunami–I’m very familiar with that lake—-many family fishing trips there as a kid. (pronounced Mill–Lack). Yesterday I read about homes 100 miles north of San Francisco breaking apart and sinking into the hillside and now this—–I think we’re in troubs. Lots of strange weather-related happenings.

Back from brunch…..and that nap I was talking about:) Nice day today!

Here is more bs thrown against the wall to see if anything sticks from the GOP….in regards to Obamacare and Sebelius that we talked about yesterday.

A top Republican senator is comparing Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’ ongoing effort to implement the Affordable Care Act in partnership with the health care industry and nonprofit organizations to the Iran-Contra scandal, during which officials secretly sold arms to Iran to fund a resistance movement in Nicaragua.
Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) made the comments on Saturday, after the Washington Post reported that Sebelius is asking industry groups and other community organizations to support efforts encouraging people to enroll in the new health care exchanges established under the health care law.

Administration officials insist, however, that Sebelius was following authority laid out in the Public Health Service Act and “has made no fundraising requests to entities regulated by HHS.” “For the last several months the Secretary has been working with a full range of stakeholders who share in the mission of getting Americans the help they need and deserve,” Jason Young, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, told ThinkProgress.
He explained that Sebelius is operating under a special section of the Public Health Service Act that allows the secretary to “support by grant or contract (and to encourage others to support) private nonprofit entities working in health information and health promotion, preventive health services, and education in the appropriate use of health care.”
Indeed, officials from Republican administrations appear to have relied on similar authority to promote health initiatives, suggesting that the GOP’s attacks may be motivated by politics rather than preventing wrongdoing.

    Iran/Contra, Watergate…..are they kidding???

Happy Mother’s Day, desertflower! I am glad you had a nice day. These Republicans are truly a piece of work. First they deny HHS the funds to implement ACA, then when the Secretary of HHS finds a creative way to raise money to implement a law passed by Congress and re-affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court, they are now foaming at the mouth and comparing HHS’ actions to the illegal Iran-Contra and Watergate? Lamar Alexander and Orrin Hatch, who are supposedly respectable Republicans, should be ashamed for peddling lies!

Hi there, nathkatun:) There ARE no “respectable” Republicans left….the wingnut wing of the party kicked all of them out! Simply put, they do not want govt to be efficient or work for the people. They want to do everything in their power to stop efficiency in its tracks so they can all say. “See, I TOLD you govt doesn’t work!” These people are flat out evil as far as I’m concerned….and the biggest hypocrites on the planet. One part of me wants them to keep talking so more people get a clue, the other part of me just wants all of them gone.
I have grown so tired of their faux outrage over every little thing…screaming about god knows what, while collecting a paycheck and doing zero work. Talk about takers! They should be the poster children. Really….it’s getting old.

Great story on 60 Minutes about the rescue of Jessica Buchanan, an aid worker in Somalia, kidnapped and being held for ransom by pirates ( of some sort)—-again President (poker face) Obama ordered Seal Team 6 to the rescue just hours before the SOTU.
