Rise and Shine

Nate Cohn: After President Obama’s reelection, analysts and commentators wondered whether his young and diverse coalition would outlive his presidency. Many believe, based mainly on their intuition, that 2008 and 2012 were the anomalous results of a historic candidacy. On the other hand, the country is getting more and more diverse with each passing year. Recently, one prominent demographer at the Brookings Institute used the exit polls to argue that Obama would have lost if turnout rates returned to ’04 levels. But his effort was misguided and premature.

Today, the Census released the November 2012 Current Population Survey (CPS) Voting and Registration Supplement, which is based on interviews with hundreds of thousands of residents. Unsurprisingly, the CPS found that the 2012 electorate was more diverse than any in history.

The biggest mistake that Republicans made in 2012 was assuming that 2008 was a special, one-time product of a historic candidate. That was superficially appealing and maybe even “felt” right, but the CPS said that the 2008 turnout wasn’t as unique as the huge crowds and palpable enthusiasm made it seem. The GOP should not delude itself into believing that taking Obama off of the ballot will return them to the White House, even if black turnout rates should be expected to decline in 2016. Demographic change, not turnout, is the primary force driving the declining white share of the electorate, and the GOP will need to adapt.

ThinkProgress: Staff who served in Libya with Gregory Hicks, the GOP’s primary “whistleblower” in this week’s hearing on the Benghazi terror attacks, undercut his story that State Department officials demoted him as retribution for speaking out, instead telling ThinkProgress about a man who one described as “the worst manager I’ve ever seen in the Foreign Service.”

“He was removed from here because he was a disaster as a manager,” the second employee went on to say, expressing the belief that Hicks’ reassignment had “nothing to do with him being a whistleblower, it had everything to do with his management capacity or lack thereof.” This includes going to a meeting with the Libyan Prime Minister Mohammed Magarief in a t-shirt, cargo pants, and baseball cap. “I’m too upset to wear a suit,” Hicks allegedly told a staffer. “I want the Libyans to know how upset I am about this attack.”

Media Matters: ABC News is buying into right-wing scandal mongering over the tragic September 2012 attacks on a U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya, with an “exclusive” report that doesn’t stand up to minimal scrutiny, with flaws that are being used by the right to call for a major investigation.

The so-called “exclusive” report, posted at ABCNews.com, purports to uncover dramatic new developments in the right wing’s Benghazi witch hunt, but in reality it is little more than a rehash of previously covered debates over whose input was given to the early draft of intelligence talking points put together in the early days of the investigation into the attacks. None of this largely rehashed debate disproves what Gen. David Petraeus, former head of the Central Intelligence Agency, testified in November: that the intelligence community signed off on the final draft of the talking points, and that references to terrorist groups in Libya were removed in order to avoid tipping off those groups.

Karl’s report feeds into the right-wing conspiracy mongering over the Benghazi attacks and the desperate campaign to fabricate a cover-up. Friday morning, Fox News hosts cited the report as evidence that a major investigation was needed. Yet Karl’s speculation is easily disproved.

Sy Mukherjee: Looks like Obamacare is more “on track” than “train wreck.” In a striking illustration of the promise that the health law holds for consumers, two Oregon private insurers vying to sell coverage on the state’s Obamacare insurance marketplace this October are reevaluating their opening bids for the plans’ monthly premiums. The reason? A side-by-side regional comparison of all proposed 2014 premiums for Oregon marketplace plans became public on Oregon’s marketplace website Thursday, and showed that the two insurers’ planned monthly premiums were far higher than other proposals. That raised fears among the companies’ officials that their plans wouldn’t be competitive on the market later this year, leading them to proactively request a rate reduction — and as more of Obamacare is implemented, state insurance commissioners expect that trend to continue

Andrew Rosenthal: In a recent Pew Poll, 80 percent of respondents said the president and Republican leaders were not working together to address important issues — and, by a two-to-one margin, said the G.O.P. was more to blame for gridlock.

Despite their minority status in the Senate, the people on the right side of the aisle have managed to muck up the works. Their obstructionist repertoire is so extensive that you almost need a field guide to their delaying techniques.

Here’s a start on that guide.

Good morning all. Endless rain around here, all week and now all weekend. Still, it’s better to walk in the rain than watch ANY commenter on TV. It’s jaw dropping to realize that the whole Benghazi clown show revolves around freaking talking points, according to Media Matters and some buried story in our local newspaper. Has anyone tried writing talking points for any complex organization, let alone the Federal government? Do they have any idea how many times talking points are edited, re-edited, edited and re-edited again time and time and time again. I spent my whole working career in communications and it’s a joke of epic proportions to build anything on the back of talking points put together under deadline. Just a sick, pointless joke that anyone over ten would laugh at. Meanwhile we have an epically disastrous Republican led Congress that puts our economy, the nation’s health and our national security at risk daily with their shenanigans. And where is the one article in all the MSM and in all the hot air floating from pundits that talks about the denial of funds for embassy security by the REPUBLICAN led Congress. Benghazi, subject verb, object, just like Joe Biden said of 9/11 and Rudy Giuliani. On the positive side, a lot of the so-called Obama Coalition, aka the American people, and the pro-Hilary pumas are going to be itching to eliminate a lot of Republican congressmen in 2014. Just when complacency starts to set in, the fools pull find a way to rev everyone up again to get out the vote against them. So let’s start the backlash going, get the fires burning, line up and support challengers and get us a Congress that works.

Hey Jackie. Getting ready to rain in my parts, too. Per Benghazi — “It’s jaw dropping to realize that the whole Benghazi clown show revolves around freaking talking points” — And they know that Congress had that information for months. They want to make the most scandal-free administration into one. But they will fail, as they have for the last four years.

    • May 11, 2013 at 11:57 am

The most telling aspect of the Benghazi “non-story” is the national media’s mindless feeding frenzy; don’t what they do best, non-questioning laziness and congratulating themselves.

I know that Zeke Miller is a persona nongrata here (he’s with TIME magazine! they used to have some credibility), but check out this nauseating tweet from yesterday:

and this from the equally nauseating Politico (re Jon Karl’s abominable “juice” question at PBO’s last press conference):

I’ll try my best to never post tweets from these people/entities again.

Gooooood Morningggggg TODville….Goodddddd Morning MsChipsssss….and Goood Morningggg to the special blogstersss

Rand Paul…Ann Romney…along with some of the Hillary supporters have this all wrong…there is no one who is entitled to the White House…a candidate must earn the privilege to occupy the WH,…

On the DEM side it will be a serious mistake to disregard the so-called “Obama Coalition”…because they cannot win the WH without them…from now to 2016…we have to continue to work …to be the Change we seek…

I listen to the so-called progressive/liberal shows and I try to figure out what their purpose is…often.. their programs sometimes serve to confuse and distort what is really happening…

I have to come to understand this…and I am reminded of what the President has said many times…WE ARE THE CHANGE WE SEEK!…

Take the health care law…just as BWD put out her tweets and I think it was HF who suggested making some kind of chart from her tweets…and LP gave us links to the application process…and of course there is WiWs website which is chock full of info….and one more thing…the WHs website…and the list can go on and on…

so the info is out there…so for me…I take the info and talk to my neighbors…co workers…family about their health insurance…write letters to the editor in our neighborhood paper…etc…

here in PA…we have a Gov that will not set up the exchanges so the FED gov will be setting it up…Ooooo weeeeeeee….so much will be happening…

I plan to do my small part to be a part of that pebble that causes the ripple in the pond….

PF, you are so right on. Anyone who wants to be president has to earn it and everything going on right now about 2016 is just so much noise and nonsense. No one gives a damn. If people are engaged at all, it’s about local politics or maybe 2014. The presidency is a long way away. Right now, we have to be our own truth telling brigade. Find the surest way to communicate with a lot of people you know–through a newsletter, neighborhood coffee, public events like street fairs and country fairs and start getting the word out about the issues that matter to people lives. If we do our jobs right, even the dimmest of Americans (who are not blinded by ideology) will see that their lives have been made better because Barack Obama was their president. It’s in our hands.

One thing that I hear from the so called liberal pundits..about getting the message out there…being critical of PBO….last time I looked it was the role of the Press to do this…..however what we get from the Press are distortions and GOP talking points…

talk about conspiracy…what about the GOP obstruction conspiracy from blocking the POBs nominees to the FED Courts and his cabinet…to the Senate Filibuster abuse…to the GOP obstructing laws…like not funding parts of the ACA and Dodd Frank…these are the scandals that the MSM should be talking about…..

perhaps the true conspiracy that exists is the collusion between the GOP and the MSM……

So, this unsubtle idiot of a politician reveals the whole enchilada. Says right in the open it’s all about Hillary and 2016. Every time they pull these blindingly stupid stunts they undermine their own efforts and energize Dems. Get enough of us mad and you’ve ginned up bigger than ever support for Hillary, given the Clinton folks a major opportunity for mega fundraising and rallied the troops. The stunning lack of sophistication and political savvy in Paul’s statement is comical. Keep it up, genius. I’m sure the Clintons appreciate the support.

    Good Morning TOD’ers

O/T Please sign Randi Rhodes petition to fire General Mark Welsh for his disgusting comments about women that are raped in the military are already damaged goods. This treatment of rape and allowing the rapist to stay in the military while the men and women they victimize are shoved out the door. Thanks.

I viewing the video of Tweety and Goldie, I am glad Chris Matthews did not say something more stupid….he was speechless after Goldie spoke of her now deceased nephew’s rape in the Navy.

I was thinking this morning how our Government has never wanted to do what was right for minorities unless they were forced into it. The Jeff Sessions video of requiring undocumented folks to earn $45K is meant to leave a large portion of them unable to meet this requirement. On a position note maybe it will raise the minimum wage for these workers who cut lawns, take care of their children, Janitors, maids, dish washers.

  25. May 11, 2013 at 9:56 am

It’s scary when I read about the false accusations and stories that are spread by our legislators, so-called leaders, and the MSM. I feel frustrated when I see the double standards [Benghazi] that they have no qualms applying, especially as it relates to President Obama and his agenda. Their insensitivity concerning the needs [ACA] and desires [gun reform] of average citizens is offensive. But it goes beyond the things that they do and say. It is also about the fact they are so comfortable saying it and doing it.

It’s scary because, in their minds, the common decency and selflessness and compassion of Americans that the President talks about do not seem to apply to them. These people seem to live in an alternate universe. Unfortunately, they have the resources to wreak havoc for the rest of us. I know it sounds “Fringe-like”, but how often do we wonder what world they’re living in?

One thing that brings me comfort is that people no longer have to solely rely on the traditional MSM as the source of information. The internet has opened up other avenues such as The Obama Diary. [Another opportunity to say THANK YOU to Chipsticks, the associate blog tyrants, contributors, and twitterers! 🙂 🙂 🙂 ]

I also try to remind myself that even though the empty wagons are getting the attention, it does not mean that everyone is suckered in by their ranting. The wack-jobs are a small portion of the US citizenry…at least I’d like to believe that. And these wackos tend to underestimate what the average citizen will do and the impact we can have.

And I have to trust that people are continuing to pay attention to the obstruction and disrespect of the GOP congresspersons and will show their displeasure at the polls in the next election.

Sw, the best antidote to fear or rage is to do something positive. Be your own media source, make sure you’ve know the facts and spread them every day. Attack, attack, attack…….they know nothing else.
