USA Today: President Obama turns his attention back Friday to one of his signature issues, health care. A White House event this afternoon ties implementation of the massive 2010 health care law to Mother’s Day on Sunday.

Obama will discuss the benefits of the law for women, and also ask mothers to encourage young people to sign up when insurance exchanges go on line in October.

Sun Times: President Barack Obama returns to Berlin in June – the city where he staged a triumphic speech during the 2008 election – with First Lady Michelle, the White House announced on Friday.

The June 17-19 swing will start in Belfast and move to Lough Erne in Northern Ireland for the G-8 Summit. After that the First Couple head to Berlin.

Austin Bergstrom International Airport, Austin, May 9

Norm Ornstein (National Journal): ….. Bob Woodward has pushed the idea that Obama has failed in his fundamental leadership task – not building relationships with key congressional leaders the way Bill Clinton did….

…. No one schmoozed more or better with legislators in both parties than Clinton. How many Republican votes did it get him on his signature initial priority, an economic plan? Zero in both houses. And it took eight months to get enough Democrats to limp over the finish line. How did things work out on his health care plan? How about his impeachment in the House?

…. For Obama, we knew from the get-go that he had no Republicans willing to work with him ….. schmoozing was not going to change that.

…. it is past time to abandon selective history and wishful thinking, and realize the inherent limits of presidential power, and the very different tribal politics that Obama faces compared with his predecessors.

Joe Biden: The Rolling Stone Interview

The vice president on guns, global warming and why he’s “the last guy in the room” on every decision Obama makes……

“Remember, I got criticized for saying I support gay marriage …. I just decided I couldn’t be quiet about it anymore, and everybody was stunned that that’s where the public is. And I’m not stunned; it’s where the public’s been for a while. Talk to any of your kids, for God’s sake.”

Did you get blowback from the president or people in general?

“I got blowback from everybody but the president. I walked in that Monday, he had a big grin on his face, he put his arms around me and said, “Well, Joe, God love you, you say what you think.” I knew he agreed with me. It wasn’t like he was in a different place…..”

Mother Jones: At Least 71 Kids Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown …. None older than 12, several as young as five or six months, all of their lives ended by a bullet.

There was four-year-old Trinity Ross in Kansas City, who lasted about a week on life support after a playmate came across her father’s gun in the TV room. There was 10-year-old Alexandra Brown in Ohio, apparently murdered in the backseat of a car by her father just before he took his own life. There was three-year-old Jadarrius Speights, who got his little fingers on his uncle’s loaded 9 mm in an apartment in Tampa, just Tuesday night. His death came one week after a five-year-old boy inside a rural Kentucky home pointed a small rifle at his two-year-old sister, Caroline Sparks, and pulled the trigger.

The Fact Checker (Washington Post): “Remember, in 2010, everybody said you can’t dare let guns go into the national parks. And of course the rapes, murders, robberies and assaults are down about 85 percent since we did that.”

— Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), speaking on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” May 9, 2013

….. We always appreciate it when a politician admits error, and we certainly understand that misstatements happen on live television. We don’t try to play gotcha at The Fact Checker. So Coburn just narrowly avoids earning Four Pinocchios.

Hmm, Glenn Kessler is being very generous…. in this case, “misstatement” means ‘lie’.

Eugene Robinson: Those who are trying to make the Benghazi tragedy into a scandal for the Obama administration really ought to decide what story line they want to sell.

Actually, by “those” I mean Republicans, and by “the Obama administration” I mean Hillary Clinton. The only coherent purpose I can discern in all of this is to sully Clinton’s record as secretary of state in case she runs for president in 2016.

… House Republicans who voted to cut funding for State Department security should understand that their philosophy — small government is always better — has consequences. Bureaucrats have to make judgment calls. Sometimes they will be wrong.

…. I can only hope that Issa’s witch hunt leads to better security for our brave diplomats. Even the cheapest political stunt can have a silver lining.

ThinkProgress: Schumer Destroys Top GOP Talking Point Against Immigration Reform

On Thursday, as the Senate Judiciary Committee took up a comprehensive immigration reform bill that allows the nation’s 11 million undocumented immigrants to earn a path to citizenship, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) shot down Republican claims that the measure will allow 30 million new immigrants to enter the country and take away jobs from American workers.

In a tense and lengthy exchange with Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Schumer argued that most of the individuals and families who would attain legal status under the bill are already working in the U.S. economy illegally or are currently in the backlogs of the immigration system…..

TPM: Malcolm Shabazz, the grandson of the late civil rights leader Malcolm X, has died while in Mexico. The news first broke when a family friend named Terrie Williams announced his death on Facebook and Twitter. TPM has independently confirmed his death through another source with close knowledge of the situation. According to an associate, Shabazz was beaten during a robbery Wednesday night in Mexico City.

Like his namesake, Shabazz, who was 28, was actively engaged in politics. Juan Ruiz, a member of the California-based labor organization Rumec, told TPM Shabazz was in Mexico City with one of the group’s leaders, Miguel Suarez who had been deported from the United States last month.

The headline on this Steve Benen post truly is perfect: ‘Crazy from the Heat’:

Two of Arizona’s most powerful officials ran into some trouble this week, though one seems to be in far bigger trouble than the other.

Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett (R), for example, is perhaps best known for flirting with the “birther” conspiracy theory and publicly questioning whether President Obama would be on the state ballot in 2012. This week, however, Bennett faced a different kind of controversy, when we learned the Arizona Secretary of State is bankrolled by the Tea Party group Freedomworks, to the tune of $2,000 a month.

But as it turns out, that’s the less interesting story out of the Grand Canyon State this week…..

John Boehner sorry ass need to be thrown out of Congress.

    • May 10, 2013 at 10:52 am

So why don’t we hear more pushback and condemnation from the Democratic representatives about the wasted time spent on votes to repeal Obamacare and other insignificant legislation that is brought to the floor for votes? Why aren’t they being more critical — vocally and in writing — about the lack of effort on legislation that matters… like JOBS?!?!?!

Most of the pushback I see or hear about seems to come from people on twitter such as yourself, Japa and other TOD bloggers, and journalists like Pierce and Bennen.

People with guns really need to keep it locked up, safety on, and emptied. I don’t understand why people don’t do that if there are children in the house.

    • May 10, 2013 at 6:05 pm

Indeed – sane people keep sharp knives away from small children, even though knives have multiple purposes and can also be used to kill. With guns, there is only one purpose – to kill – and yet, we see parents thinking that they need to secure their guns far less than they secure their knives. It’s unbelievable.

    Great round-up Chiparoo.

    1. Fantastic interview with VP Biden. I didn’t think I could love VP Biden any deeper but Joey B just reaches down into one’s heart and makes one love him even more. Those who underestimate him are foolish beyond belief. It’s also wonderful to have a POTUS and VP who truly respect, admire, like, and love each other. Hot damn we got lucky!

    2. Really Glen Kessler, Tom Coburn’s comments were a “misstatement” — a kick in the balls is what Kessler deserves for that nonsense.

    3. Jake Tapper <—— living in a fool's paradise.

    4. Pete Souza is a mensch and just wonderful.

Madame Chips, another great Rise and Shine. 🙂 🙂

We continue to see the remarkable accomplishments of our President and his administration. What makes it more remarkable is what he is able to do despite the obstruction from so many sources.

Even better is seeing the GOP, MSM, etc. stumble over themselves as they try to undermine President Obama’s legacy. Wasted efforts that won’t succeed because they are based on lies and deceit.

TOD, you’ve totally got to watch Tobey Maguire’s appearance on last night’s Jimmy Kimmel. He talked at length about the basketball game that happened last year with him, George Clooney, Don Cheadle, and Pres. Obama after a fundraiser Clooney threw for Pres. Obama. It was great to hear the behind the scenes shenanigans, Maguire was beaming from ear to ear, and it just confirmed again what a wonderful human being Pres. Obama is.

Kerry Washington came on after Tobey Maguire and she was delightful. Plus, you get a sneak peek at the season finale of Scandal which left me breathless last night. It was that good.

Click on the third panel to fast forward to Tobey Maguire’s appearance.

Morning! Happy Friday! Chips….Chipster….your Chipiness….you put that Crazy Heat Benen piece in here just for me, didn’t you? 🙂 Flipping hell:) I’ll tell you what. I’ve lived an awful lot of places in my lifetime, but NEVER, EVER have I lived in a place where there are so many crazies concentrated in state govt as here. Never. And since this is a REPUBLICAN state, every single solitary person in this state’s govt with an “R” behind their name is batcrap crazy. Every. Single. One. No exceptions. Brewer, Arpiao (and ALL his cronies) Bennet, Horne, and every state legislator in office here. It’s really amazing. Crooked and rotten to the core as they come.
Sometimes I just shake my head….and wonder WTF? I’ve attributed this awful phenomenon to the retirees that move here from somewhere else…scared, white old Republicans. I don’t think I’m generalizing. They move here for the weather….and then their brains fry even more and they loose any rational thought they might have had. Truly disgusting, actually. Pretty state on the outside, nasty on the inside.
Maybe global warming will have the desired effect of sending these guys back where they came from….too hot to handle the summers here. Getting worse and worse every year since I’ve been here. We shall see!
Anyway, what Steve described, is a typical day in AZ politics….nothing to see here, move along! Or as I like to say, ” Same shit, different person”

Correct, I agree with Don: there is nothing so vile in the animal kingdom as there is in twisted human nature. Animals do not separate themselves from nature, they remain true to their purpose, they know the part they play. Evil human intention has only evil as it’s purpose: to destroy and to discourage, to create discord and undermine good. It goes against all Truth.

This is such a simple and elegant statement – it defies all reason why it’s not understood.

Oh, it’s understood … but business owners are more interested in profits and their bottom line … and Republican politicians have a total lack of empathy for the dignity of “workers,” and are more interested in their own cash cows. They don’t care how or if or when anybody else earns a fair wage.

    The price of deregulation:

But Texas has also had the nation’s highest number of workplace fatalities — more than 400 annually — for much of the past decade. Fires and explosions at Texas’ more than 1,300 chemical and industrial plants have cost as much in property damage as those in all the other states combined for the five years ending in May 2012. Compared with Illinois, which has the nation’s second-largest number of high-risk sites, more than 950, but tighter fire and safety rules, Texas had more than three times the number of accidents, four times the number of injuries and deaths, and 300 times the property damage costs.

The New Hampshire Moms In Ad Defending Ayotte’s Background Check Vote Are Actually GOP Activists

and Josh Israel on May 10, 2013 at 10:06 am

As Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) battles public outcry over her vote to kill a bipartisan amendment expanding background checks for gun purchases, a national conservative group based in Iowa is running television ads featuring seemingly ordinary New Hampshire moms and law enforcement officials defending the one-term senator from out-of-state “partisan” attacks.

But the American Future Fund appeared unable to find voters who agree with Ayotte’s position, as a cursory search of individuals in the advertisement reveals that the supposedly typical New Hampshirites are actually long-time Republican party activists and officials. Polls show that 91 percent of New Hampshire adults support expanded screenings. Watch the ad:

Jayne Millerick is billed in the ad as a “New Hampshire mom” and says “Those attack commercials are partisan and deliberately misleading.” But Millerick is actually a Republican strategist who served as Chairman of the New Hampshire Republican State Committee, a New Hampshire Republican Delegate in 2008, and was a member of New Hampshire Women for Mitt coalition in 2012. She is now a professional political consultant.

Judy Brown, another “New Hampshire mom” from the ad, served alongside Millerick in the Romney campaign and volunteered for Ayotte’s campaign in 2010. In 2013, she was named as the Nashua City Republican of the Year.

Barbara Dutile, a “Law Enforcement official,” is the wife of a Republican Sheriff in Grafton County who was Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) New Hampshire delegate in 2008, campaigned for Romney, and served as an alternate delegate. In 2012 she received an award from the Republican Party of New Hampshire.

The other individuals featured in the ad Richard Crate, Russ Larry, and Christopher Connelly, are all part of a group of law enforcement officials who have backed Ayotte and are featured on her Facebook page.

Everything good in my life comes either directly or indirectly from my wife. We married 8 years ago today, but we’ve been together a total of 14 years. I still find my awe of her growing on a regular basis. I am still patting myself on the back for being smart enough to make it permanent.

Congrats to you and wifey. I’m sure she’ll say that she’s equally as lucky to have you. And imagine how smart she is to allow you to think it was your idea to make it permanent, so you’d end up patting yourself on the back.

Senator Inhoffe just said on a radio station that the President could get impeached over Benghazi.
He said people will start using the I word very shortly.
After all, that is their goal.
And we all know the President is not guilty, but if they capture the Senate, this whole country will be torn apart.
They are under so much pressure from the big wigs that wasted a billion dollars on the GOP ast election.
