Night Owl Chat – Classic Hip Hop Edition

So, I grew up in NYC in the late 70s / early 80s, when rap was roaring out of the hood to take the US by storm. And this is the music I grew up on. So, a bit of old school to carry you through the night.

The one and only Afrika Bambaataa – “Planet Rock”

Run-DMC – “It’s Like That”

Grandmaster Flash – “The Message”

Kurtis Blow – “The Breaks”

Grand Master Melle Mel – “White Lines”

And just to break the male dominance, Roxanne Shante – “Roxanne’s Revenge”

This is your old school night owl open thread.

I can’t tell you all how much I loved putting this post together. It brings back such memories of basement parties in NY. And “It’s Like That” was the first record I bought, a 12 inch.

So, On the Bill maher show, we found out that Glen Greenwald loves guns and hates government intrusion, he loves Freedom, hates the Military, blames the US for the problems in the Middke east, even though those problems were there 1700 years before America created, he blames The government for Benghazi not the Terrorists.

This is pretty substantive evidence that he is a Tea Bagger.

And that ain’t all he said, it was jaw dropping.

    Hello everyone,

Chips, a β€œgazillion” (I love it when you use this word) thanks to you for this wonderful place where all things are positive about our beloved President. A trillion thanks to LL, UT, LP, Amk, and a billion thanks to your regulars for all that you contribute every day! Chips, what a close-knit cyber family you have. I am truly honored to lurk here every day. Although, lately I’ve been behind and don’t like it when work gets in the way of my lurking.

LL, you took me way back – Party over here! Like you, I also grew up in NY (Brooklyn) during the 70s and 80s. Wow, this old school edition certainly brought back lots of memories of the disco days. Partying hardy in mid-town Manhattan at Leviticus, Justine’s, and LeJordan (to name a few). What a carefree time that was. Thank you very much.

P.S. Have to say, I loved me some Houdini β€œThe Freaks Come Out At Night”

Just a thought, but a serious question. Can the Exec Branch sue the Legislative Branch for dereliction of duty? Congress has held up so much plus appointments to crucial jobs, plus, plus. If they can be sued, to what court? Can We The People sue them for same? If not, why not? Surely We The People can’t be left with just the 2-4 year voting cycle.

    • 139 Alycee (@jazziz2)
      May 11, 2013 at 2:16 am

Great minds… I’ve been trying to figure out how to sue the rethugs for being in ontempt of the Constitution…

    • 140 theo67
      May 11, 2013 at 2:38 am

I was wondering the same thing. Surely, if a law is the law of the land, then Congress is obligated to enable the law, isn’t it? Since Boehner and friends have dipped into public funds to support DOMA because they say they must uphold the laws, despite the discriminatory nature, then what is their argument for not supporting ACA with tax dollars? There must be a case here.

      • 141 nathkatun7
        May 11, 2013 at 3:41 am

“Since Boehner and friends have dipped into public funds to support DOMA because they say they must uphold the laws, despite the discriminatory nature, then what is their argument for not supporting ACA with tax dollars? There must be a case here.”

Unfortunately, under Article I (and especially Section 8) of the U.S. Constitution, Congress has the sole power over the purse. In other words, Congress decides how to raise revenues and and how to spend those revenues. Given this Constitutional reality, I don’t know who would have legal standing to bring a case against Congress for not funding the implementation of ACA. That’s not to say that a bright and creative lawyer can’t find a way to sue Congress on behalf of a citizen who may have been denied medical care in violation of ACA.

        • 142 theo67
          May 12, 2013 at 12:27 am

Thanks for the explanation. Since Congress is supposed to work for the people, there must be some recourse?

    • 143 nathkatun7
      May 11, 2013 at 3:23 am

Gazelle, now I am not a lawyer so take what I say with a grain of salt. I am, however a student of history. Sadly, the “Executive Branch” (meaning the President) cannot sue the “Legislative Branch” (Congress) for obstructing legislations and for holding up Presidential appointments. The only recourse to make Congress behave is if “We The People” rise up and demand action through mass demonstrations. Failing that, our recourse is to mobilize to vote the obstructionist rascals out of office in 2014 and 2016. This is why it’s absolutely important to realize that all elections have consequences.
